EMDR Therapy Demonstration (overcoming trauma & anxiety)

  • Trauma can cause anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, relationship issues, and performance problems. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidenced based therapy for treating trauma. EMDR therapy specifically targets memories of trauma such as neglect, abuse, and/or violence and reduce emotional distress such as anxiety, depression, anger, and fear.
    Disclaimer- This is Clinical EMDR Therapy Demonstration. EMDR therapy should only be conducted by a properly trained EMDR therapist.
    Preparation Phase:
    Butterfly Hug Technique: Interlock your thumbs to make the butterfly’s body and place your both hands gently on the center of your chest. Then we’re going to tap at the speed of my tapping sounds. It is important to alternate the movement of your hands (left and right-back and forth).
    This is EMDR Therapy Demonstration. EMDR therapy should only be conducted by a properly trained EMDR therapist.
    Assessment Phase:
    What’s the worst part of that stressful situation?
    When thinking about the worst part, what picture do you see?
    For example, when I was stuck in traffic, I see myself in the car and making a frowny face and my wife was looking at me.
    As you look at the pick on your mind’s eye or think about that situation, What emotions do you notice?
    Where do you notice those emotions in your body?
    For example, I can notice my face gets tensed up and neck is stiff.
    On a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being neutral and 10 being the most intense you can feel physically and emotionally), how much does that memory bother you? Or how intense do you feel physically and emotionally?
    When you think about the memory or see the picture, what negative words go with that memory about you using I-statements?
    For example, you can say “I was not in control, I was not good enough, I was helpless, or I was weak.”
    Lastly, what positive words do you want to believe about yourself using I-statements?
    For example, you can say I’m good enough, I’m worthy, I’m stronger, so on and so forth.
    When you think of your stressful situation, how true do those positive words feel to you on a scale of 0 to 7 (0 being completely false and 10 being completely true)?
    Desensitization phase:
    Partially or fully close yourself and visualize a screen in your mind’s eye. Bring up the picture of your stressful situation, physical sensations, emotions, and the negative words.
    Please make your butterfly and place it on the center of your chest.
    Let whatever happens happen. You can start tapping at the speed of my tapping sounds.
    Make sure you stay with the tapping and the screen.
    Go back to that memory and bring up the picture. How much does the memory bother you? In other words, how intense do you feel about the memory now on a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being neutral and 10 being the most intense you can feel physically and emotionally).
    Let’s try it again. Make your butterfly and place it on the center of your chest. You can visual a screen in your mind’s eye and bring up the picture, physical sensations, emotions, and words associated with the memory.
    You can start tapping at the speed of my tapping sounds. Again, let whatever happens happen. You are in control of the whole process.
    Go back to that memory and bring up the picture. How much does the memory bother you? In other words, how intense do you feel about the memory now on a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being neutral and 10 being the most intense you can feel physically and emotionally).
    How are you feeling now?
    Did your number decrease or increase?
    Can you tell me what was helpful and unhelpful?
    What prevents your number from going down?
    Installation Phase:
    Let’s check in with your positive words. Please repeat your positive words to yourself. How true do those positive words feel to you now on a scale of 0 to 7 (0 being completely false and 7 being completely false)?
    What has helped you believe in your positive words?
    What prevents you from believing your positive words completely?
    Closure:
    We will stop here and you have done some very good work. Your brain will continue processing and you decide what’s worth keeping and letting go. I’d encourage you to practice your relaxation techniques after our session.

    I received EMDR for medication phobia back in the 90’s. The phobia was caused by an allergic reaction. The EMDR worked. I have no problem taking needed medications.

    I was in an ocean of paper work. Lot of fear. 😰. As I tapped the ocean started to recede. Where the ocean water was only around my ankles. I was able to tiptoe out of the ankle deep ocean to dry land. To no longer in fear of paperwork😊. 🦋🙏🦋KCMary. The butterfly method works so fast. Many thanks. 🙏

    Today was my first try ever. I stoped at 13.47 because my hands were hurting and Icouldn't keep up with the rhythm. I'll try again later. So much rage! Update. I did it with my third try.     This was an amazing introduction to EMDR! I found I couldn't see the 'screen' when I started tapping. My brain focused on the sound of your tapping. I also started worrying that I would go out of sync with your tapping. I always had a problem with rhythm/beats in music lessons. I wonder if I would do better with visually following the hand movements since I wouldn't have to worry about maintaining the beat.
    With that being said, I still brought my number down from 7 to a 3. It encourages me that when I find a therapist this might actually work for me.

    I just subscribed in you chanel is amazing😊! I had a question? When I close my eyes, I remember several episodes from the past, they come to me one after another. And when I remember, I feel sadness and despair inside me, especially when I was in school and when someone I knew teased me and had a lot of anger. every time I think about it now I regret why I didn't react, I feel disappointed and sad why it happened?

    The butterfly method is very soothing, much nicer than eye movement. For someone with Vertigo, side-to-side eye movement is a source of stress in itself, but I noticed when trying this guided session for the first time, my closed eyes started to move rapidly at times, similar to REM sleep. I cry easily, and there were a lot of tears as I tried this technique. Are tears okay if I don't feel too overwhelmed? I feel better after crying but not sure if it's okay during session.

      Yes, it can be confusing at times. I'd encourage you to practice it with a mildly stressful event. So you can slowly build tolerance and self-awareness with this approach. Thank you for your feedback.

      @@SelfHealingnow Thank you for your help! & this video, I guess the situation was more stressful than I thought hehe! I'm back to try again on a different situation! :)
      update: this second less stressful situation was WAY more helpful I went from 5/10 stress to 6/10 to 4/10 to 1/10. I felt it in various parts of my body where I've normally had pain in the past. the pain moved from one body part to the next during the video. The only thing standing in my way is to try again with this situation. Fabulous job! Thank you so much for facilitating Hong Jeong!

    I’ve had two events I think were tempting suicide. One I was driving home from work, dark, rainy. I saw the van behind me was getting closer until it hit me. I don’t remember accelerating to avoid getting hit. I was entranced watching it.
    Another time, going to work at night. I get to railroad tracks. The light came on and I stopped. The bar came down on the top of my small hatchback. The train blew its whistle more than usual. I noticed the cars were bigger than usual.
    I told a co-worker about it. He looked serious. I didn’t get it but the next day he brought me a CD of gospel music that resonated with me.
    As I thought about it I suspected it was near to suicide. It wasn’t until much later I saw it in terms of dissociation, the destructive, protective parts.

    What can I do if I'm unable to feel the physical sensations/emotions when picturing the traumatic event? I'm able to imagine the scene in my head in all details, but I don't feel anything/no anxiety which I would immediately feel if I get into the situation today in real life. So I'm not able to give a score from 0-10 since I always feel 0 when only imagining it. What should I do? Is EMDR useless then if I cant bring up those feelings during the session?

      I appreciate you sharing this with me. It's important to notice and feel the whole range of our feelings on a scale of 0 to 10. I suggest you find the spots in the body where you feel your feelings. For example, I can notice slower breathing when I feel calm whereas I can feel faster breathing when I get excited or nervous. It's important to expand our bodily awareness from certain spots in the body. EMDR is designed to help you become more self-aware. So let's start somewhere and increase your self-awareness gradually.       Tapping left and right is another bilateral stimulation. You want to try different bilateral stimulation methods and see which one you prefer.

      @@SelfHealingnow thank you but do we need to move eyes while they are open? Then a small screen would be enough or we need to be in person? Also as I asked earlier do we need to imagine opposite better scenarios to lie and feel better? How are we supposed to feel in the end to know that we have done the excercuse correctly? I also want to know how to forgive someone who isn't sorry and has hurt us both emotionally and physically? Please help in releasing trauma and guide in the matter of possible- Thankyou very much Dr

      You're welcome. If you have a small screen, you can perhaps choose two points on a wall or in a safe place and move your eyes left and right from one point to another. There is no right or wrong to feel in the end. It's about noticing your internal world as opposed to "achieving something." I believe healing should be natural, not forced. The first step is noticing your internal worlds (feelings, thoughts, bodily sensations, etc.) Then, we can explore ways to release old trauma/feelings/patterns/beliefs.     Exactly *why* does the tapping have to be so fast?
    Is it proven that this speed is more effective than a slower speed?

      The speed of tapping or bilateral stimulations is to help move past the disturbance of trauma. With slow tapping or bilateral stimulation, individuals can get stuck in their trauma. However, when I notice positive changes in my clients, I often slow down the speed of tapping. I hope you find it helpful.

    This is not emdr. Isn't emdr done with fingers in front of eye's. What is this technique specifically called please reply.

      Yes, EMDR can be done with eyes (Bilateral Stimulation). Bilateral stimulation is stimuli (visual, auditory, or tactile) that occur in a rhythmic left-right pattern. Tapping is another way to stimulate the brain bilaterally.

    Hello thanks for this amazing video..but jus wanna ask how to go about when the person at present is not bothered about the past events atleast he believes so but when he faces similar situations again it triggers him so bad and it is so intense and exhausting like 9/10 and he nearly loses complete control of body and behaviour and the behaviour become abnormal like similing without reason although he knows it is making people around think he is mad or something and he feels like crying from inside but he can't control and even have trembling hands and legs and he knows people think he is uncomfortable which makes it more intense all this occur in social situations. BTW he sometimes smiles uncontrollably alone too due to mentally racing thoughts or stuff all this he believes is due to childhood trauma from an abusive gaurdian who was emotionally abusive for a long time and judgemental about his looks but today when he looks normal and handsome his behaviour is not normal..what do you suggest is best for such a person emdr or something else?

      Hello, I appreciate your feedback. EMDR sometimes takes a lot of preparation work. This is an EMDR demonstration video. If that person is interested in self-healing and processing unresolved feelings, it'd be more effective to speak with a therapist. Therefore, he can set goals for his healing process and devise a concrete plan by using EMDR or other approaches. In the preparation phase, he will be able to find tools for self-regulation and self-awareness. Thank you and Happy New Year!

      @@SelfHealingnow can emdr help him let go being hyper vigilant around people and thinking about how they are judging him and his behaviour and the cycle which triggers abnormal behaviours? Is emdr best option or something else ?

      @tanyawieczorek6603 no he has no history of autism he used to be extremely confident about himself until age 16-17 almost over confident before this emotional abuse by a guardian about his appearance started and lasted a decade and made him so traumatised that he had extreme social anxiety and now when he looks good and knows it he still fears being judged for his behaviour and this fear triggers abnormal behaviours he thinks he is similing without reason and in the quest to control it he feels he either has a frowny face or a non serious laughing face all the time and people judge him for this and it triggers body tremors for fear of being judged...

      Picture yourself listening to the sound whereever you heard it. What was your reacting when you heard it? Make a photo in your head of that exact moment

      It's important to find your own ways to embrace both positive and negative feelings. Our nervous system is always active in detecting possible danger and safety. Tapping can help regulate or moderate intense feelings so that we can restore safety and regulation in the body and mind.

      That I do not know. According to the EMDR protocol, they measure a positive statement on a scale of 0 to 7. I appreciate your curiosity

    1/2 a 👍 I like your video, except for the tapping technique, I don’t think you took women who have considerable sized breast into consideration. Otherwise, I thought it was good.😊
