    Great video. I use to do quite a bit of chainsaw milling myself. The bottom floor of the cabin I'm building is sixteen feet by twenty four feet. With the Lords help I did seven of the fifteen layers of logs with a chainsaw mill. The Lord helped me to later on purchase a cheap Hudson Sawyer band saw mill. The Lord also helped me do a little welding in order to put a larger motor on it which works much better. The mill I bought is probably the cheapest one available, but it sure was worth it. It worked well with the 7 hp. motor, however the housing cracked on it. I was cutting a huge heavy twenty- four foot oak log when the housing cracked on the small motor. I had been cutting huge oak logs like that the whole summer ( their had been a terrible thunder storm that brought those oaks down, so I utilized them for the back gable of the cabin). It was surprising how well that small motor cut, but for what ever reason, the housing finally cracked. Maybe I mounted it to tight to the frame when assembling it. The new thirteen horse power motor does work much better. My Hudson Sawyer band mill has a thirty six foot track which the Lord helped me to make for about two hundred dollars. It is amazing what one can do with a small band mill, some angle iron, and some beams to mount the angle iron on. With this set up the Lord has helped me have a cabin with six thirty six foot purlins and a thirty six foot ridge pole ( it sure was a challenge getting those monsters up on the gables with just ramps, ropes, an 8n tractor, and pulleys. But by the Lords mercy and help, those logs are in place Praise the Lord Jesus forever more!! My dad is helping me plain live edge boards for the first covering on the roof which will be seen from underneath. I'm leaving about a four inch gap between the boards and putting another board on top of the two to cover the gaps. I really like how it is looking. Your set up sure looks great for your chainsaw milling. You are a real carpenter. Whoever gets a cabin built by you has a real treasure. Blessings to you in Jesus blessed holy name, amen.

    That is a great way to get set up!! I enjoy using the Alaskan mill I've only ran it on oak ,ash and walnut, I am looking forward to sawing some pine and poplar with ,I'm sure it will go a little easier,I got near a 60 logs to square up ,I'm just going to cut them to the straightest longest length I can get,not sure what I'm going to do with them yet,but we are clearing for a pond and don't want to just doze them into a pile ,so I thought I'd slick them off and stack them up cover em and let wait

    Have you ever tried snapping your lines and then just doing your rip cut free hand as the log lays on the ground? I bought an Alaskan mill a few yrs ago and only used it several times before I figured I could make cuts almost as good in a fraction of the time by just running my saw down a log making vertical cuts instead of horizontal.
    There are a couple reasons why I believe it's actually better than using a mill. First reason being is that you don't need a high powered saw, because you're only using the "action" part of your chain bar, which means it's much less demanding on the engine. Second reason is the time you save from having to set everything up and get it dialed in. You'd be surprised how accurate you can actually get your cuts just freehanding it with your snapped lines. You can also set up a level on your bar during your cuts to make it even more accurate.
    I have found that my results from using a mill was only minimally better, and both require a good planing to get a nice finished board or timber...
    Regardless, thanks again for all the great content. Looking at buying property in the near future and using your videos as a guide during my cabin build.

      Howdy Joshua- I have snapped lines and ripped up to them for sill logs and plate logs and was able to get a pretty fair job. A log builder buddy shared the way I’ve been doing it and it has worked fairly well for me. But I realize there are other ways to do things that work well also. I’ve watched videos of some guys in another country and they were doing what you do and it was amazing how well they did. I noticed you made another pass over the log after the initial slab removal. I also noticed while cutting the initial slab off, you made several back tracking movement to the saw and it created a step in the slab being removed. Did the pull back and re-initiating the cut movement of the saw as you cut create steps in the log's "good / wanted" surface and if so is that why you made another thin cut after removing the slab? It appeared that the saw's bar rocks on the logs surface across its width as you cut (seen @ 6:35 ish when re-gripping the saw - left hand, palm up hence, lifting the saw just a little bit). Is this causing any curving of the cut surface of the wanted log? (JF)

    • @1kbs11
      @1kbs11 2 роки тому

      P.S. Last question: When extending the "Rack's" the final length of the 21' log, have you ever had any change to the over all level of the length in the log's surface? I imagine not with the "Levelers" secured as the are.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  2 роки тому +1

      Howdy KS- good catch. I must have bumped when I started the cut and pushed the saw up a little. That movement doesn’t affect the log I’m milling because the Alaskan mill is still riding on the rack and only leaves the slab which is not being used with the steps of the saw. After the initial cut is made I’m just milling the log that will be used for the top plate. Moving the rack down doesn’t have any affect on the cut. Merry Christmas to y’all and God’s blessings to you

    Do you use an Alaska mill to cut all the logs you use in the cabins you build, for some reason I thought the logs you use are cut by a sawmill?

      Howdy- I only cut the top plates because they are longer than what the sawmill can saw. I get everything else sawed at the mill. Take care and God bless
