    It's really coming together quickly now. I notice that that narrow barred chain saw comes in handy when setting the logs!

      Howdy Scott- I sure appreciate the vote of confidence but there are people who are much better than I am. I was very fortunate to have worked with who I consider to be among the top log builders in the country. Thank you so much for your kindness. God bless you

    Absolutely incredible!.......you are truly a Master Craftsman. I've seen many old cabins here in Southwest Missouri with the dovetail method but never thought of the building techniques involved. Looks FANTASTIC!

      Howdy John- thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I probably go to a little bit more work, but the old timers were working hard to get a shelter for their families and didn’t have the time to get everything perfect, but what they were able to do with limited tools is incredible. Thank you so much for watching our video. God bless you

    Just watching this video again - that hoist is brilliant! Really like your tractor too. This will look so nice. I like how your logs are cut so that the tops and bottoms have some natural curves in them, that will look nice. I will be interested to see how you do the chinking too. I am starting to think more about that task. Really happy we have connected!

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 роки тому

      Penniac Wilderness Howdy- glad you came by and watched again. That old tractor is a 1970 model but still gets the job done. I work by myself and have to have a way to move logs around. I got the idea for the hoist from my buddies who are log builders. I changed a couple things on it but basically it is their idea. It’s sure an easy way for me to get logs up on the wall. I appreciate the fact you could handle your logs like you did, but, I ‘m a wee bit older than you lol. I love what you have accomplished with your cabin. God’s blessings on y’all

    I like how big the logs are and gos small the chinking gaps, I've seen a lot of pictures where the chinking gap is almost as big as the logs and I like the smaller gaps look much better. I hope my cabin will turn out as nice.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 роки тому

      Matthew Waters Howdy Matthew- since l’m using the natural shape of the logs some of the gaps will be different sizes. I use one inch as a base when I figure out the notch dimension. But sometimes ( according to the shape of the log) the gaps vary somewhat. I do not like a real wide gap. God bless and keep y’all safe

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  2 роки тому +1

      Howdy Lowell- thank you so much for watching our videos. I sure appreciate it. I don’t have any problem with things moving much because everything is coming straight down. Sometimes a small gap will open at the shoulders because of shrinkage on the thickness of the logs but the notches stay tight. That can be taken care of by tapping the log in and making a handsaw pass to tighten it up. I will do that occasionally. Take care and God bless

    So excited to see the roof system go on this that I can barely handle it. Are you planning on building trusses/purlins etc or will you buy and engineered truss or hand frame rafters? Id love to see you build the trusses out of timbers and curious how you make the face/angle of the purlins on the same plain for the roof sheeting. Keep up the good work! Love watching, thanks

      Camaro 68 Howdy- I wouldn’t put engineered trusses on a log cabin. I will cut out the roof system out of timbers kind of keeping with tradition. We’ll get there one of these days. God bless y’all

I also explain how l come up with the notch dimension. Having to work out audio problems on that video. Please bear with us till we get it fixed. God bless and keep y’all

    Did you have any problems with shrinkage or did you air dry your logs before using. Also did you pin the corners and with what, rebar, log screws. spikes? I got my logs last week and I have to let them dry some before using. Anxious to get started.

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  3 роки тому

      Howdy HG- there will be some shrinkage as the logs season out. I like to use the logs green and allow for the settling that will take place. I use angle iron in the openings and the logs can slide down without any problems. I know some people pin the corners but I don’t because the half dovetail keeps the logs in place. I did use 1/2” lag bolts on a historical restoration on the corners because the notch was a flat notch and there was no holding power. There’s nothing wrong with letting the logs season out at all. In fact, the log builders in the European countries would cut their timber and let them season for three years or so. I’m sure you are anxious to get started on your cabin. Building a log cabin is very satisfying. I wish you the very best with your build. God bless you

    Sir, do you put wood dowels or anything to hold the logs in place or do you rely on the over all weight of the structure to hold them in place?

    • @TheBeardedCarpenter
      @TheBeardedCarpenter  4 роки тому

      Linda NWFirefighter Howdy Linda- the half- dovetail holds really well. I use angle iron in the openings to keep them straight and allow for settling to take place. I use a long all-thread bolt to tie the top four rounds together. I feel that if dowels aren’t put in so the upper log can settle can cause some hang up problems. I have never had any problems with how l do things. Thank you for watching and God bless you

    Just one question ‘ at 7-40 u chiseled a flat on the log to give a level seating for the next log ‘ do u think rain water could flow in on that flat if hit by rain and strong winds ‘ what type of chinking are u going to use ‘ silicone based or mortar ‘ by the way excellent workmanship ‘ love that gig chisel ‘ greetings from Ireland

      Martin Byrne Howdy Martin- after l put the flat spots for the blocking to hold up the shorter logs l put Anchorseal on it. Anchorseal is a water based parroting that seal and protects during construction. I use a mortar ( sand, Portland, masonry cement and mortar tint for color. I used to use sifted red clay for the color but the dye is so much easier. Digging and sifting clay can be work, especially if it’s a little damp We have a video ( smoke house) where l show how l do the chinking. God bless y’all

    Paul, I was asked to look at a log home a local lady started last summer because a number of her logs started splitting. For whatever reason she is using white pine square cut logs. There are no notches anywhere and not even pins to keep everything in place from shifting. I've never seen or heard of such construction method. The logs are square cut about 12"x12" and some of the splits are better than a 1/3 the length of the log and several are nearly 2" wide. I would like your insight on this very much. The house is being built on an open mesa (high flat desert) and it's not at all unusual to see 60 mph winds. She is an older woman with no knowledge about construction and I'm a bit concerned about her safety living in the place when it's done.

      I've been studying you videos all winter and now digging piers and footings for the cabin I'll build this summer. Did you say somewhere your tall hoist boom is 13 ft long and is the base the same as your small one as far as length of 2x6s? How much counter weight do you load on the back? Thanks for all you share!

I really appreciate what they took the time to show me. The way I do things is what Peter taught them and many others. I have over the years picked up on a few things of my own. After working with someone like those guys you can do some figuring out on your own. I sure appreciate what they did for me. I ‘m glad you picked up on how l do things, that’s really cool.
