Hello Carpenter, i was on holiday in the South of England and while walking in a forest i came across a clearing and working in that clearing was a Bodger, bodgers were highly skilled workers, originating in the Chilton’s in Buckinghamshire. Bodgers were pole lathe turners who worked in temporary workshops out in the woods; producing rungs, stretchers and legs for the local Windsor chair industry based in High Wycombe, I talked to the guy and on display close by him were all the tools that you use.
Howdy Patrick- I’m a little bit jealous of you getting to witness that. It would be very special to have an encounter like that. People here are so much interested in keeping certain crafts alive. I am a dovetail guy and I would love to see more about your 3 to 1 template or where you bought it. I have always used a speed square for my angles. This template looks way easier.

There is something about seeing a cabin being designed and built by hand with no modern computer technology that words just cannot describe. The attention to detail here is amazing, even down to the hand felt levels... you just dont get that in today's market sadly as time is money and rough fit seems to be ok.. I wish the world still had workers with the level of detail you do

I have my great (x3) grandfather's, and his partners timber gaming tools, and carpentry plains. The only think I feel that's missing... the slick! I'll be using this tools soon. Probably start my shop next month after the property goes through the closing process.

Howdy Lance- the saw I was using is a 16 5/16” Bigfoot Skil. I have a few worm drive framing saws. I have my Daddy’s old Porter Cable SpeedoMatic that is a 10” saw. It still cuts good but I don’t use it anymore. I watched your video this morning of you building the trailer and saw you using your worm drive. Would love for you and Cinda to come up and see us. Howdy Dave- I’ve worked with different size logs. The smallest I live to use is a 10” tip. I remember doing one wall log that was 30” and 7” thick. Some of the logs we used when I worked out on the road was 8” thick and up to about 26”-28” in width. Those were really heavy to work with. I like working with logs that are about 12”-15” at the midpoint. Take care and God bless you

Howdy Richard- I like to hew the sawmill marks off the logs. Leaving the sawmill marks on the logs has an unfinished look in my opinion, plus, I like the look of a hewn log. God bless you
Howdy Timothy- I am “scoring” the log with the axe. If you see old hewn log buildings you will see the score marks still on the logs. The old timers did that to sever the wood fibers so they could finish hewing with a broad axe. I hew the saw marks off and with the scoring it still makes it easier to hew with my broad axe and it gives the logs the old time look. Thank you for the comment. God bless you
Howdy Carol- I do the score marks to give the log a look of the way old cabins were hewed using logs that were round. They would score the fibers of the wood to make it easier to hew with a broad axe. God bless you
Howdy JB- these are southern yellow pine. That’s what we have in abundance where we live. Poplar doesn’t grow here unless someone has planted it. I wish we had some growing here. I would like to be able to use it. God bless you
I'd never heard of Keen Kutter axes, I wanted to know why you would have one and not want to use it, so I just spent a half-hour reading about them. Keen Kutter axes sold for between $30-$45 in 1930, adjusted for inflation that's $500 to $700, that's amazing. Howdy- I found my Keen Kutter axe in Pennsylvania years ago. It still has the original handle and had never been sharpened. Since it’s in mint condition I kinda hate to use it. is the axe and broad axe work just for aesthetics or does serve a function?? why not leave the logs smooth?
Howdy Richard- I like to hew the sawmill marks off the logs. Leaving the sawmill marks on the logs has an unfinished look in my opinion, plus, I like the look of a hewn log. God bless you

Howdy Timothy- I am “scoring” the log with the axe. If you see old hewn log buildings you will see the score marks still on the logs. The old timers did that to sever the wood fibers so they could finish hewing with a broad axe. I hew the saw marks off and with the scoring it still makes it easier to hew with my broad axe and it gives the logs the old time look. Thank you for the comment. God bless you

Howdy Carol- I do the score marks to give the log a look of the way old cabins were hewed using logs that were round. They would score the fibers of the wood to make it easier to hew with a broad axe. God bless you

Howdy JB- these are southern yellow pine. That’s what we have in abundance where we live. Poplar doesn’t grow here unless someone has planted it. I wish we had some growing here. I would like to be able to use it. God bless you

I'd never heard of Keen Kutter axes, I wanted to know why you would have one and not want to use it, so I just spent a half-hour reading about them.
Keen Kutter axes sold for between $30-$45 in 1930, adjusted for inflation that's $500 to $700, that's amazing.
This is a thread about Keen Kutter in a Blade forum, it has some pages from a 1930 catalog, that's where I found the prices.

Howdy- I found my Keen Kutter axe in Pennsylvania years ago. It still has the original handle and had never been sharpened. Since it’s in mint condition I kinda hate to use it.
