In 1498, the Pope gave half the world to Spain and half the world to Portugal. The other Christians were not amused as were many of the non-Iberian Catholic monarchs as well.
The big deal with Blackthorne taking Magellan's Pass is that it was supposed to be a navigational secret held by the Spanish and Portuguese. Those books that Rodriguez took from Blackthorne's ship were two: One was Blackthorne's journals of all the raiding they did on Spanish and Portuguese posts; the other was a stolen navigation book with all the shipping secrets that had been kept from the English and Dutch.
Japanese are predominantly Buddhist/Shinto. I don't mean one or the other but practicing customs of both. Buddhism in Japan is often associated with death ceremonies, funerals, and ancestor worship. Shintoism is more closely tied to life events such as birth, marriage, and festivals. Shinto is a traditional Japanese religion focused on the veneration of kami (spirits or deities) and the reverence of nature. It emphasises purity, ritual and connection to a spiritual world. There are several versions of Buddhism practiced in Japan, with one of the most common being Pure Land Buddhism. It emphasises devotion to Amida Buddha and the belief in rebirth in the Pure Land. Based on the Taiko's conversation at the beginning of the episode he was an observer of this.
9:10 England in 1600 was ruled by Elizabeth I who was Protestant in the manner started by her father Henry VIII. But in between those two, Henry's first daughter Mary ruled England as a Catholic and killed a lot of Protestants. Henry and Elizabeth weren't guiltless either, but Mary really dialed it to 11. So Protestants weren't too keen on Catholic rule at the time
Also, Mary was married to Philip the king of Spain (and Portugal and Holland), and there was the fear of England getting subsumed into Spain. So when Mary died childless and passed the kingdom to Elizabeth, Philip didn't want to let go of it, so war. England allied with Holland who was protestant and rebelling against Spanish rule
There are many sects of Buddhism. At this time they were rivals in Japan and some were prepared to kill each other. So violence within a religion was not unknown.

I think the kids mentioned the fingernails and the eyelashes specifically because the Taiko's were so distinct. I don't think it's any deeper than that.
The biggest City in the World in 1600 was Beijing, China ; Double the size of either Osaka or Kyoto who were the 4th and 5th largest Cities , respectively, after Istanbul and Agra .
Small point (from the book) At 8:43 when Ishido calls blackthorn "the Freak from the West" this is also a insult aimed at Toranaga, as he rules the Kanto this is the area on the western side of japan and to the west of Osaka.
The city of Edo was not yet large at the time. It was only expanded after 1600 and became the new capital of Japan.
At that time, Osaka was still the capital.
Technically, Kyoto was the capital the whole time. But the real power was in Osaka and then Edo.
For those that don't know, the character John Blackthorn is based on real english pilot named William Adams, known in Japan as Miura Anjin (1564-1620). Look for wikipage on him for full story. And for the lovely couple, i urge you to watch the 1980 tv miniseries adaptation of the book Shogun starring Richard Chamberlain. I personally think it's better than the new one. But i'm biased as i watched it as a 7 year old kid when it came out.
the NHK drama on Mura Anjin was also good.

Hi guys, I really wouldn't use population size of a city as a metric on how civilised or advanced a country was. I'd say Japan and Europe were roughly equal in that respect and both lagged a fair way behind places like China & India...also I think the largest city on Earth circa 1600 AD was probably Beijing not Edo.
Treaty of Tordesillas. noun. (1494) agreement between Spain and Portugal dividing the rights to colonize all lands outside of Europe.
And the way it was split is why Brazil speaks Portuguese while the rest of South and Central America speak Spanish.
tokyo is still currently the largest city in the world as well .
11:11 Yeah, no, the show is a little confusing on who's who and what happened when. Most things get more clear as the show goes on, though. They kinda throw you into the deep end in these early episodes.

Spain had South America. Except Brazil. Portugal had Brazil and everything east. The challenge for the Dutch ship is it has to sail past Spain and Portugal. Plus sail past the Portuguese forts in Africa. By sailing west and then south, they could avoid most the Spanish forces, which were focused in the Caribbean, Central America, Florida and the north parts of South America.

I'm not an expert but i don't think samurai used they'r swords that much. It was forbidden to show a naked blade publicly and in combat they used spears, bows and naginatas as the Katana was more of a personal defense weapon. So not a lot of sword fights in a samurai movie is historically accurate i guess as personal defense weapons are rarely used by soldiers against enemy, they are used by officers that don't carry a main weapon with them and by enforcers. I have not seen the series yet but i remember loving the original show when i was a kid, and i feel like a little kid now watching this as it's great so far. If we see a samurai running to battle with katanas it will be a kin to seeing US marines charging into a jungle with m1911s loaded with 5 bullets leaving they'r m4s and m60s in the foxhole.

You should watch it a second time when you don't have to react, it's a lot of information to digest.
The non-Christian Japanese Lords don't like how the Portuguese are controlling the international trade and how the Catholic religion is controlling more and more of the Japanese population. So the non-Christian Japanese Lords would like to learn about the rest of world and learn about any other countries to counter Portugal/Spain.
Shoguns super good
It's kind of silly, but because, Ieyasu Tokugawa's (whom the character Toranaga in "Shogun" is based on) forces killed off a lot of my family who fought on the side the Toyotomi loyalists at the Battle of Sekigahara in real life, I always get a little pissed off reading or watching "Shogun" and will go off mission when playing games like Kessen and Samurai Warriors to kick the ass of a particular general who was traitor who pretended to stay loyal until the middle of the battle and had secretly convinced other clans to switch sides with him. A friend said "It's been four centuries, and you're still holding a grudge" which was pretty funny.
If you want action and samurai fights this ain't the show..just too much yapping after ep 3
