This episode beautifully showed Mariko's journey through the six stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance and Pillowing A Stranger.

17:15 Very close! It's actually fermented soy beans. I believe they typically smell worse than they taste, but for those new to it, it's certainly an acquired taste.

And on this month's Live, they discuss those two words and bless Mrs.' heart....Mr. Movies had to look up a definition of bukakke and show it to her. (It's towards the end of the live. It's hilarious!)

This is such a good show, the acting, set design, manorisms, all perfect. John and his insults are the best as well

Natto is fermented Soy Beans, and is very much an acquired taste. So I believe they are just giggling at the fact that he's trying so hard to enjoy it.

It's also a textural thing. It's quite slimy, and I'm sure most contemporary westerners would have a problem with that. Not sure about 17th century Europeans though. They ate stuff modern westerners would be completely grossed out by

The Emperor is not like a King, and the little boy is not the heir of the Emperor, he is the heir of the Taiko (who was dying in the flashback in Ep2). Taiko was a title given to retired regents of a child Emperor, this was related to the Taiko being the ruler of the country but Taiko was just the highest title they had (because they were common born) and they happened to be the ruler of the country. The Emperor of Japan at this time was mostly a symbolic figure and spiritual leader. They would essentially "bless" the actual ruler of the country, the Shogun. The Taiko was not a noble, and therefore could not have been Shogun even though he was the ruler of the country. Had the Taiko been a noble, he probably would have been granted the title of Shogun by the Emperor. Don't worry I'm sure I got something wrong in here too :P

Fuji, as consort, is not marrying Blackthorne.... its more like.. the role of a steward, is responsible for the household and ALL of its needs, as well as the peace of the household and particularly the needs of the lord of the house....all the needs....
So yeah basically the wife in all but name, but the lady of the house in feudal Japan was a boss-b---h in her own right.
In the case of Ochiba as consort to the late Taiko (who was already married to Daiyoin), that particular consort's duty was to bear the Taiko an heir.

-sama does not mean Lord. Sama (様, さま) is a more respectful version for individuals of a higher rank than oneself, it is an honorific. When they are addressing/referring to a lord, they use -tono (殿 との) / -dono (どの). But sama is a higher level of respect than tono/dono.

It’s actually amazing attention to detail. A samurai sword is a very personal thing. For somebody who doesn’t own the sword to put their hands on it is disrespectful. So women who have to get their husband sword for them would use their kimono and such a way that their bare hands and not actually touch the sword. It’s an amazing little detail and shows you how Historically accurate this show is trying to be to Japanese culture
