For a 2024 release, I’d recommend The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. I loved it!
That seems like a good one! Thanks for the recommendation!
If I was going to get someone into fantasy who likes romance, I would start with Nora Roberts. She has several genres she writes in so your wife may not have read her fantasy, but has read her contemporary romance books. If your wife wanted to try out her contemporary just to see if she likes the writing, she could try the Inn of Boonesboro trilogy. Her Isle of the Three Sisters trilogy has witches and magic fantasy while The Circle trilogy brings in portal magic and other things. Nora Roberts has been writing for a while and publishes quickly which is good if you get into one of her ongoing series. She tends to write in trilogies though she has a few standalones.
For Eldritch Creatures: I read The Ninth Rain by Jenn Williams. It's the first of a trilogy, but is complete. If you don't like bugs, maybe don't get it.
Thanks Sara! I think that is a fantastic recommendation.
I recently put The Ninth Rain on my tbr, I may HAVE to get it now lol
Great list! So many good choices. I also want to read Malice this year. I'd recommend Divine Rivals if you are looking for suggestions for your wife. It felt like historical romance with fantasy elements to me (and it's fantastic!)
Thank you! Thanks for the recommendation, I'll add it to my list for her.
2024 releases I'm excited about that you might like:
- The mercy of gods (James SA Corey)
- Mistress of lies (KM Enright)
- The silverblood promise (James Logan)
I've seen a lot of hype for Silverblood Promise recently. The Mercy of Gods is interesting, could be a great spot to try Corey without committing to The Expanse.
The books going around for the bard prompt are A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross, and Bloody Rose which is the 2nd book in the Kings of the Wyld series by Nicholas Eames. I also think The Bard’s Blade by Brian D Anderson would work.
These are all read recommendations Erin! You're amazing!
Goblins/Orcs: The Hobbit, LotR, The Goblin Emperor, Orconomics.
Oooo all solid choices!
Recommend to your wife The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston - it’ll dip her toes into a speculative romance, while being less extreme than ACOTAR. Bonus: it’s an AMAZING book! I’ve seen it on SO MANY best of 2023 lists, and it is my top book of the year so far. Maybe this will help her dip her toes in a little more gently? 🤷🏻♀️
That is a great suggestion!
My wife agreed to try The Seven Year Slip! I requested it from the library so I might get back to you on how/if she likes it
Eldritch creatures: I have not read these since I used a horror for this one but i've heard the tainted cup counts, herald by rob j hayes, along the razor's edge from him as well. I'm also reading cage of souls by adrian tchaikovsky atm and it would also count and am really enjoying it.
Honestly they all seem like really interesting books
If you find smth else for multi pov, Glokta would def qualify for the disability square. Thr poor guy💀. Godkiller, ascendant, black sun, gallant, kings of paradise, etc. It doesn't have to be a physical disability either but they're easier to realise haha
Bards: hm would work for the first binding i've heard. I'm reading dark water daughter for normal mode.
Oh no! Now I have to read First Law lol
I had originally slotted Malice into the first square, but after reading it, I ended up putting into the 5+ POV square. Lots of characters in that one :D Great book. Also, not intending to be the participation police, if you are interested, the rules of the challenge allows for only one reread.
Project Hail Mary definitely fits Survival - hard mode.
That is great to know! No, participation police away. Someone else also kindly reminded me of that little rule that I clearly glazed over and forgot when filming this video lol So we'll see what my one reread actually ends up.
Epic! That makes me happy to hear.
I'll be reading flames of mira for underground. For dreams I've heard the spear cuts through water or the helm.of midnight qualify that interest me.
Blood over bright haven migh be one you'd enjoy for dark academia. Not sure of wizard of earthsea would count. Haven't read it but seems pretty classic wizard school? Blade itself should count for multi pov.
Flames of Mira seems really interesting. I've heard that about Spear from a couple of different people now, so I think that'll be a great choice.
Blood Over Bright Haven seems excellent as well
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine hits hard mode for space opera. Bonus: it’s only a dualogy.
Always love a good duology
Here’s my planned reads for the bingo card:
First in a series: Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb (I read the entire Farseer trilogy in April)
Alliterative Title: Books of Blood by Clive Barker
Under the Surface: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Criminals: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Dreams: The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez
Entitled Animals: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan
Bards: Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay (also got the idea from Brandon and Dan on Intentionally Blank)
Prologues and Epilogues: Jade City by Fonda Lee
Self published/indie: Portrait of a Nuclear Family by JP Behrens
Romantasy: The Songbird and the Heart of Stone by Carissa Broadbent
Dark Academia: The Will of the Many by James Islington
multi-pov: A Storm of Swords by George RR Martin
Published in 2024: The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne
Character with a Disability: Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
Published in the 90s: The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon
Orcs, Trolls and Goblins: Thud! By Terry Pratchett
Space Opera: Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey (I am also about to start Tarkin which would also count lol)
Author of color: Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
Survival: Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kane Adjei-Brenyah
Judge a book by its cover: Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson (Dragonsteel edition)
Set in a small town: Sword of Kaifen by M. L. Wang
Five Short Stories: Never Whistle at Night
Eldritch Creatures: What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher
Reference Materials: The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien (my one reread)
Book Club: Ink Blood Sister Scribe by Emma Torzs
Wow Jessica great list! This is going to help me fill some of my holes for sure! Like The Spear Cuts Through Water, I've heard good things about but didn't know it had dreams.
@@DiggerdanReads I actually got the recommendation from r/fantasy! I wouldn’t have known either 😂 I would have moved Assassin’s Apprentice to dreams if I had to. Lots of dreaming in those books.
@@Jess_Reads Ooo that’s good to know! That one has been on my TBR for a while too
@@DiggerdanReads highly highly recommend reading the Farseer trilogy. I am stoked to keep going in the realm of elderlings!
ninth house for dark academia
That's a great choice!
It's for younger readers but, the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon features bards and actually uses the word, so it hits hard mode.
Thanks for the recommendation! YA books don’t really put me off so I may get around to it
I see Malice and my little heart is happy
I’m hoping it makes my heart happy when I read it lol
My daughter is not a fantasy reading like your wife. I had her read Shadow & Bones by Leigh Barudugo and she loves it. It's world building isn't overwhelming and the magic is easy to understand also has a romance. If you haven't read it I suggest you read it so you can help with the first couple of chapter but once you get over the first couple chapter and getting all the information that the beginning chapter thought at you. She be good. May cover your Eldritch Creature sqaure.
That seems like a great suggestion. Thank you! I’ll have to try and convince her to read it
I’ve been told Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer works for Eldridge creatures 🤷🏻♀️
That would be fantastic if it does. Annihilation has been on my TBR for awhile
@@DiggerdanReads It definitely counts, Hard mode too.
@@BenjaminsBookclub good to know!
For 2024- I am super excited for The Failures by Benjamin Liar (out in July). Or one that just came out is The Silverblood Promise by James Logan. I believe these are both debuts and would work for hard mode.
For disability- Ascendant by Michael Miller has a blind dragon that I believe would be considered a main character for hard mode
Oooo both The Failures and The Silverblood Promise are interesting.
Ascendant I think would totally count! Thanks for the suggestions!
Heck Yeah Mate! Bingo! Love it! Great video!
Cant wait to see your reviews on so many of these ones!
Alliterative Title: One I was considering re-reading, but if you haven't read yet, might be a great choice for a spooky horror read. The Haunting of Hill House, It's quite short as well.
Under the Surface: Not sure about Secret Realms, first I'd heard of it! Caving and Underwater books have always been my Jam though, so a few great ones, The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling, The Descent by Jeff Long, Sphere by Michael Chriton, The Maw by Taylor Zajonc.
Dreams: I feel like this is a square we are likely to get by accident, I have a few maybes but I think I'm going to just see what happens, if we reach like January and we haven't filled the square I'll go hunting for specific recommendation's.
Bards: It was just pointed out to me by Pauline over at @Thataltmomvlogs in her own Bingo video that Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames has a character called a bard, so that's my new choice for the square, I am still not sure I can bring myself to start a series with Name of the Wind that seems to have almost no chance of finishing.
Multi POV: I have been led to believe that The Blade Itself does have 5 POV characters!
Published 2024: A good list I was looking at is Goodreads list of 2024 Debuts - www.goodreads.com/list/show/176397.2024_Debuts
Disability: One that is on my radar as a possible for this square is The Spear Cuts Through Water - Simon Jimenez which seems really interesting.
Space Opera - I think Star Wars is basically the dictionary definition of space opera yeah.
Survival - Oh! I cant wait to see what you think about Project Hail Mary! I would absolutely count it for Survival.
Judge by the Cover: I checked for you, it looks like its a Duology and both books are stitched together in the copy you have, so I think you're safe. Also I lost it at "The Cover of the Side" :D
Eldritch: I'm gonna suggest you check out Tales of the Gas Station on Audible, It's kind of an Urban Fantasy/Horror/Comedy book series that I have adored in Audio form. I think you might end up quite liking it as well.
Reference Materials: Ohhhh I was going to read Blacktounge Thief this year anyway, free Bingo Square!
Thanks so much for the shoutout mate! Cant wait to bounce Bingo videos back and forth!
Sorry I'm just responding now Benjamin, YT held your comment for review and never notified me that you commented lol.
Anyway, thank you! Thanks again for the video idea, it was fun to put together!
Normally I stray away from horror but Haunting of Hill House seems interesting.
The Luminous Dead seems good. Woah, the The Descent seems really cool I'll have to check both of them out!
Bloody Rose isn't a bad choice, my only hesitation is that it's the second in an unfinished trilogy. But that doesn't scare me too much. Yeah I can't blame you about Name of the Wind. I feel that is a lot of people's opinion currently.
That's great to hear about The Blade Itself! I felt I was half guessing when I made the selection.
Oooo that is a good link to check out (Now that I think about it, I think YT flags comments with links lol)
I'm hoping to read Project Hail Mary maybe in May. I want to read a stand alone soon and I think that may be it.
Thanks for doing my research on The Fall of Atlantis for me! That makes me more confident in my choice. Haha I'm glad you liked that
Tales seems interesting, I'll have to give it a try.
No problem my friend! Again, thanks for the idea. I'm looking forward to it! :D
For Dreams: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor...? Nightmare by Piers Anthony (Xanth series)...?
Both of those choices are great! Thanks for the recommendations!
Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo hits hard mode for dark academia. Also, FYI, you’re limited to one re-read for the entire bingo card.
Ooo Ninth House seems interesting. That is a great point that I seemed to have glossed over lol
Under the Surface: The Luminous Dead - Caitlin Starling (hard mode)
Dark Academia: Ninth House - Leigh Bardugo (hard mode), Bunny - Mona Awad (hard mode), Atlas Six - Olivie Blake (not hard mode)
Published in 2024: A Sweet Sting of Salt - Rose Sutherland (hard mode, also hard mode for alliteration, dreams, romantasy)
Character With a Disability: Desert Creatures - Kay Chronister (hard mode)
Author of Color: Chain-Gang All-Stars - Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (hard mode)
Eldritch Creatures: Annihilation - Jeff VanderMeer (hard mode), also just things by Jeff VanderMeer in general (hard mode), Three Parts Dead - Max Gladstone (hard mode), Our Wives Under the Sea - Julia Armfield (hard mode, also hard mode for Under the Surface)
The Luminous Dead seems really interesting! Normally I shy away from horror but I would be excited to try this one.
Ninth House is the one that sounds the most intriguing out of your recs for Dark Academia, so I'll probably end up going that route.
Desert Creatures seems really interesting, and its a standalone! That's always a good bonus.
Chain-Gang All-Stars is a great pick! It seems very interesting. I might have to read that very soon.
Someone else mentioned Annihilation, which is good since its been on my TBR for awhile now.
Thank you for all of the recommendations!
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison might be a good choice to get from your library. I’ve heard good things.
Oooo that one does seem really interesting
For POC hard mode - check out Legendborn by Tracy Deonn - I LOVED this book!
That is a great recommendation! And its YA, I feel like a lot of YA gets glossed over just because its "easier to read" or just for a little younger of an audience.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros and Half a King by Joe Abercrombie, or Godkiller by Hannah Kaner all feature a main character with a disability.
I haven't heard of Godkiller, maybe I'll have to pick that one up
I’m planning to do The Adventures of Amina Al-Sarafi for the alliterative prompt. If you haven’t read it already, it could be a good option for hard mode. 🤷🏻♀️
That is a great suggestion! I haven’t even hear of it but it seems interesting. Thanks for the recommendation Erin!
Project Hail Mary works for survival hard mode
Epic! Thanks for clarifying this for me
