For the Goblin promt, you should maybe check out The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
These should all hit hard mode.
Alliterative square -
* The Dead Don’t Drink at Lafitte’s by Seana Kelly - it's book 2 in the Sam Quinn series, an UF series i love.
Under The Surface -
* The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
* The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling
* Somewhere in the Deep by Tanvi Berwah
* Monsters Born and Made by Tanvi Berwah
Criminals -
* A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faizal - They are criminals, they do a heist.
* The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson - The Mistborn series as a whole is a series of heisting.
Bards -
* The First Binding by R.R. Virdi - i'm almost positive they call the MC Bard and Storyteller interchangeably, repeatedly, throughout the book.
Dark Academia -
* A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee
* A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid
* An Education in Malice by S.T. Gibson
POV -
* Sunbringer by Hannah Kaner - this has 5 PoVs, it is the second book in the Godkiller series.
Disability rep -
* Godkiller by Hannah Kaner (Yes she has a prosthetic leg :) )
* The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White
* A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow
90's -
* Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar Universe started publishing in 1987 and is still publishing today. Publication order starting point is Arrows of the Queen, chronological starting point is The Black Gryphon (which was published in 1994). :)
Orcs -
* The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
Space Opera -
* Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
* Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
* Victories Greater Than Death by Charlie Jane Anders
Small Town -
* Godly Heathens by H.E. Edgmon
* The Forest Demands Its Due by Kosoko Jackson
* Monstrous by Jessica Lewis (Also fits Eldritch)
Eldritch -
* I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me by Jamison Shea
* Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury
* What Stalks Among Us by Sarah Hollowell
* Perdido Street Station by China Miéville
* Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo (might also fit Small Town)
* Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle (might also fit Small Town)
What a list! Thank you!!
Mercedes Lackey also has a book with a bard as MC too
Troll prompt Look into "Switched" by Amanda Hocking it is a first in a cozy fantasy series. But the main character is a Troll.
For the orc prompt, Forged by Magic by Jenna Wolfhart. The main character is a half orc.
Thanks!
For the bard prompt, Rebecca Ross's A River Enchanted duology has a bard main character. For Dark Academia, Ninth House series is set at Yale ( I see them on your bookshelf, but don't know if you've read them yet), or also the Legendborn series is set at UNC.
I’ve read ninth house!
Yes! Came here to suggest A River Enchanted as well! It was so good too! =)
Bard: A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross, the MMC is called a bard
Multi-POV: if you find a better HM option for Dark Academia, then The Atlas Complex would fit here
Trolls/Goblins/Orcs: The Malediction Trilogy by Danielle Jensen features trolls. The FMC is human, but the love interest is a troll, and I think he gets a good amount of POV as well, so it should work for HM
Thanks!
Glad I found you via this challenge! So many I had not heard of 😊
Welcome! I’m glad you were able to find some!
I said the same thing yesterday but I'll say it again, you look absolutely radiant 🔥
I'll be reading Bard City Blues for the bard square (hard mode obvi) It also works for the self-published square!
Kushiel's dart is queer, Main character is bi although I believe its never said on page. In the world its very queernorm as their saying is "love as thou wilt" Its also borderline bdsm I think as the main character experiences pleasure and pain at the same time. I kind of want this one for that prompt but then I also have A Taste of gold and Iron.
Here are some recs I have!
Bard: A River Enchanted, or The Stray Spirit
Dark Academia: Bunny is the only one I know of besides Ninth House for hard mode 😅
Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins: Orconomics or Paladin Unbound
Small Town: Any Simone St. James! I'd recommend Broken Girls over her newest one.
Book club: It looks like for one of the bookclubs, they already have the May (Godkiller) and June (A Study in Drowning) announced! So I'm hoping that info is correct because I'm planning on reading Godkiller in May.
Don't mind me hunting for recs in the comments hehehe.
For queer romantasy, there is a queer POV romance in Lady of Darkness series from book 4 onwards, idk if that counts? Otherwise, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows or Breeze Spells and Bridegrooms by Sarah Wallace & SO Callahan.
And for bard, I think The Stray Spirit by RK Ashwick should count!
Good luck with filling out the board!! 🤩
Ohhh I think that would count!
Kushiel's Dart! It is full of intrigue and sensuality. Highly recommend!!
I’ve heard good things!
You should give it a try you will like it
its so funny I subscribed like yesterday because of your 2023 r/fantasy bingo videos and you're posting again. I've got a card planned out for hard mode using books I already own / had on my radar apparent from the dreams prompt, that one is kicking my ass.
AHHHH Welcome! Perfect timing. And the dreams is so hard. I'm hoping I'll just happen upon one haha
For the multiple POV book, I really really liked A Plague of Giants by Kevin Hearn. If I remember correctly it has 11 povs and Kevin Hearn went into the trilogy to tell a story without having a "Main Character."
CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD. It has some really heavy ones.
I don't typically have any triggers but this is good for others to know! And whoa that's a lot of POVs. I'll check it out!!
@@MelLenoreReads I just know that SA of a child on page is a harder one than most people want to read. I personally can read them and it's one of my all time favorite series, but I wouldn't want anyone to go into that blind if it would bother them.
Also, if you stick with reading that you'll see just how influenced by those books Sarah J Maas was with her writing of ACOTAR.
I love Kevin Hearne, especially The Iron Druid Chronicles series. Love it
I adore watching these bingo TBR videos!!! I didn’t realize Kushiel’s Dart was LGBTQIA+ so that’s definitely slotting into that prompt for me 😍 trolls/orcs/goblins is gonna be a tough one for me as well
I didn’t either! I hope Redding didn’t like to me haha. Hanging city is one but I found it a little boring. Slice of life
@@MelLenoreReads I checked on goodreads just after commenting and saw that it was on an LGBTQ fantasy list so I think it’s a safe bet!!
Hi! The First Binding's main character is a bard but it is a tome!!
Good to know! Thank you!
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance for the LGBTQ+ romantasy prompt! Read this a couple months ago, still thinking about it - the main relationship is so complex and beautiful. Check trigger warnings though!
I definitely second this recommendation I completely loved that book!
My wife loves the Kushiel series but hear they are SUPER smutty, which is why I haven't read Kushiel's Dart yet. I'm also not big on heavy smut book
For the Lovecraft themed book, you 100% should check out Red Equinox by Douglas Wynne. I know him and he's super nice and the book is also great
Interesting. I hadn’t heard super smutty. And sadly I need non lovecraft. But this may work for easy mode!
I’ll check it out!
15:05 she does indeed miss part of her leg. Personally I also really enjoyed godkiller.
A Crown of Oaths & Curses had a goblin king and goblin lands. The second one The Throne of Blood & Honor by J Bree is coming out this month also.
I’ve read this! Sadly the goblin needs to be a main character so I’m hoping he makes more of an appearance
The Atlas Complex has 5+ POV’s
If you haven’t read it yet the main protagonist in Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames is a Bard.
I'll look into it! I have not read those they scare me hahaha
@@MelLenoreReads they are intimidating at first. The humor, adventure and found family elements were perfectly up my alley and I flew through them. Nicholas Eames writing style is definitely not for everyone but personally it made the books feel shorter than they actually are (mainly cause I couldn’t put them down). I hope you enjoy the series if you decide to read! 😁
I’m starting to read fantasy 😊
I hope you have fun!
I am excited to try doing this and also nervous because being ultra competitive I want to do blackout and hero and hard mode haha
A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross has a bard MC so that will be what I read for that one, the orc one is hard for me also. I haven’t read Legends & Lattes so I always could do that, I’m just not big on cozy fantasy…
Can’t wait to go hunting for books for all these!
It’s so much fun to try! I feel you on competitive haha
i am really going to try to do this this year and in river enchanted and the sequel the main character is bard and it is called that
Thanks for sharing!
For the Bards prompt I’m going to be reading Til Death Do Us Bard!
Super fun idea for a TBR prompt!!!
Rec for Dreams: Dreams lie beneath by Rebecca Ross
If your looking for a good, no smut rec for orcs troles and goblins might I suggest the hanging city by Charlie N. Holmberg.
I’ve read this!
I recommended the same to Cassidy lol but for lgbtq romantasy I recommend the night and its moon by piper cj! It's slow burn and doesn't really get spicy until book three and it's still not super super smutty.
Thank you! I'll look into this for sure
The Bard's Tale Series by Mercedes Lackey can work for Bard
or Bedlam Bard Series or Bardic Voices both by Mercedes Lackey
Thanks for the recs!
I just want to point out that Translation State is a standalone set in the same universe as her first trilogy! I've heard people say you can read it without having read any of the books in the Imperial Radch series, and it actually might give you some background information you can take into the first three books to understand them better. (Personally since Translation State and the whole Imperial Radch series are both up for Hugos, I'm going to read all of them.)
Ohhhh i did not know this!!
Someone told me the hanging city has a troll as the main character so that could work?
It does but I read it for the Goodreads’s choice awards
@@MelLenoreReads oh- I almost didn't put it, cause I wasn't sure if you had read it already- at least there's other recs!
@@rainybluereads This will be good for others so I'm glad you did!
For multiple POV, try The City of Stardust?
Oh does it have 5 or more povs? I didn’t know this
@@MelLenoreReads 5 characters and an omni-present narrator.
I really want to get to The Warded Man and The Demon Awakens this year. Sooner rather than later.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks for introducing Jacqueline Carey.
I am loving this year's bingo. Orcs was very mean
Agreed
A 6 book short story collection I know of is The End and Other Beginnings by Veronica Roth. It is a bit strange but I quite liked the stories she had in there.
Good to know!
Would the sequel to Radiance count? He's not a goblin or troll persay, but he is troll/goblin like. Stretch the prompt?
Hmmm maybe?
A strange and stubborn endurance
A taste of iron and gold
Prince of the sorrow.
All mm fantasy romance with strong plots and not just sex
Flames of mira is amazing !!!! Book 2 is out this year
Good to know!
honestly for some reason I still think the prompts this year are easier than last years, but I have not finished my tbr yet, so I might be very wrong in my assumption xD
however, trying to do it again, after failing the last two years...
This year is the year
My fiancé highly recommends R.A. Salvatore. He loves his books.
Oh good to know!
I think Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothuss has a bard as the main character (Kvothe). Not sure if he is explicitly called a bard in the book though.
Hmm I'll check into it
More than three pov stresses me out lol
Yeah it’s a lot
Feels like a cheat isnt the sam as *being* a cheat lol
Hahahaha truth
