I'm 53 and being a metalhead growing up I wasn't able to actually express myself at home. No posters, battle jackets or piercings. However, after years and years I'm finally putting my first one together. The first patch is a back patch of Motorhead. Long Live Lemmy!

I was one of a small handful of girls who wore battle vests to school in the 80s. I leaned how to sew from my Dad, who learned in the Marines. I made some good money sewing on patches for all the Metal guys then.
I made my vest out of Dad's old denim jacket from the 60s and I passed it on to my daughter in the early aughts. Now it'll go to my grandson whenever he wants it- and I'll teach him how to sew for sure.
Damn, this vest is 4 generations old now..

I always found it rather stupid that some people would think you can only get patches at concerts. A battle vest exists to show the bands you love, not to show off how many you saw live (although you could definitely make one specifically for those, I guess...).
I live in an area where live shows are a rarity, I can't travel for multiple days and being in a crowd means instant panic attacks, so no concerts for me. And you can bet all my patches where bought online.

    • @cookiesontoast9981

Yeah I find that idea stupid too.
Especially since I have to travel 2-4 hours to see any shows.
And a lot of my favourite bands just do not do live shows or are split up.

I thik it's super cool and unique and very much my style. I've gotten many compliments at festivals and won patch giveaways. @@thelastdaybreathinginetern1385 I almost forgot about my original comment lol. Anyway, no I don't think it'd be weird to put Goth patches on a Metal vest - I've seen a lot of vests that look great with mixed-genre patches.
But, and this is just my opinion, I'd try to kind of make them even in number because having 20 Metal patches and 1 or 2 Goth patches, and vice versa, looks a little weird to me but purely for aesthetic reasons lol.
It's YOUR vest project though so I say go wild and do what you want! No one can tell you what's wrong or right on your vest except you!

I like some Coldwave, Lebanon Hanover is probably my favorite but I've heard tracks from other artists that were good.

I was inspired to make a vest of my own in 2016 when I started to go to more death and black metal shows and saw a lot of metalheads at the shows wearing them. I was studying abroad in Copenhagen at the time, as well as doing a lot of travel within Europe, and was able to find at least one store in every city I visited that had patches. I bought my vest in Prague and bought 20-something patches from various stores and sewed them on the vest. I started another one 3 years ago, which has been a very slow work in progress. It's almost full now, but I have a few more patches I got for Christmas I still need to sew on.

I've tinkered with putting patches on a leather jacket I own, but I'm finally going through the rite of passage of making a proper vest.
I'm ordering all my patches online because I've had to move to a super remote rural town. I think elitism in metal is healthy, but when it gets in the way of practicality then it doesn't make a lot of sense.
Been into metal my whole life, and it's time. I had a brief stint where I finally got to go to 2-3 shows a month for roughly a year and it was life changing. This vest will be an ode to all the amazing bands I saw, and super cool dudes that I met. Shout-out to the CA bay area thrash scene, still going super strong, you're all legends and I miss you dearly.

I wish I made a battle vest back in 2010.. I couldn't at the time due to my parents beliefs, but my mother has gotten over it.. I just wore metal shirts back then, and then in 2018, I decided it was time to make a metal vest of mine own.. I grabbed the needle, and thread, and begun sowing.. to this day I've been wearing it everywhere I go. It feels incomplete without it.. except at job interviews or "important places" of course..
Edit: Todd and the pure book of evil.. man i watched the real life TV series back in my Baby Metalhead days.. miss that show..one of the reasons why I love Metal to this day including watching Metalocalypse.. Great memories and great times.

But in those days, they were just called denim jackets with the sleeves cut off.

As far as buying patches online, I think it's great as long as you buy them directly thru the band and so the money supports the band.
I selectively wear mine but have lots of satanic patches and don't wanna have that backlash on my son's at school. They don't need that. It's unfortunate but I just would hate them to get treated some type of way because of me and my music and personal interests.

You do know that your kids will be treated a weird way not because of your actions but because of their behavior. Learning to protect ones self is apart of growing up. Also metal heads in general are treated like they are immature. Where I feel that the only thing we are guilty of is standing out. Also children get into fights because of their own chemical imbalances like testosterone. While the excuses is often something else.
I agree that buying patches directly from the bands online is the best way to go about that.
Well learn to sew. It is a skill I would expect a grown woman to have.
I am a 44 year old man who has been into metal since I was 3 years old. It feels difficult for me to blend in while showing off that I am into metal. So I would like it to know that there are other adults who love metal. I honestly like having a huge beard, with braids in it.

@@thejusticeization The most important questions you asked I am going to answer first.
      1. Your statement "the patches were probably made by some old lady in china, so is it not cool anymore because an old lady made it?"
It is not cool to have a slave make something in China. You might not know or care about chinese made goods. But I do.
1.a Everything made in china has a portion of its money spent on it. Given to support the CCP, and its military. As in every product you get from there supports the take over in Taiwan. The mass Genocide of the Uyghurs people. The persecution of the Falun Dafa.
1.b These people middle class earn less than 7.25 the federal minimum wage. That is slave wages.
How dare you talk like it is ok to have something made in china!
      2. what if the bands do not sell patches at their shows?
I thought I stated online sales. You want to talk about shows. What does it matter if it is sold at a show or sold online?
Which is more confusing than anything else.
      3. I actually do care where the patch comes from. See number 1.
3.a You do know that JJmetalhead makes her own patches. She is a youtuber who teaches you how to do stuff. Maybe you should go watch her video on the topic. You know really cut out that chinese blood money.
      4. It is not masculine to sew. As in my wife sews for me. Are you telling me that I have to become more feminine to fit your needs? Well with that statement. Begs the question of who are you to me? My wife likes the fact that I can repair her car. She likes the idea that I am able to carry Heavy objects, and do the plumbing. You do know I can build a pc.
      So can you.
Maybe you should go to a gun range sometime. Take some firearms training course. Really put down the tofu. Eat a steak for dinner.
      Learn to sew.....

I've been putting off making a battle vest for too many years! For some reason I just can't see myself wearing a vest in general, it looks amazing on others but for myself not so sure. I'm thinking of using a zip hoodie in place of a vest, but for now I'm turning my work bag into a battle backpack.
Man I really like the back of your new vest, using just the cutout logos give it such a different look. I'm going to steal that for whenever I do start my battle vest/jacket/hoodie whatever I decide lol.

I'm building my first Battle Vest right now! I'm really excited. I bought myself a black denim jacket, and I got some patches here and there. I got Pantera, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Death, Ozzy Osbourne, Iron Maiden, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I also just thought myself how to sew the patches, they're a little crooked but that's alright. I ordered a Sabbath Bloody Sabbath back patch and I can't wait to get more.

I think I did something no one had ever done before... I made a pair of battleshorts. I had a pair of cutoff bdus. And I started putting patches on em. It started with my doggie drinking a beer patch and somehow it evolved over time. I kinda wish I still had em. You should see my old leather jacket. I still have it, but I can't fit into it anymore. It's pretty badass. Weighs eight pounds with all the shit that's on it. Spikes and chains and patches all kinds of bullshit.

At the rip old age of 34 I'm starting my Battle Vest. Yeah its not gonna be just metal. I'm gonna do a bit of a sacrilege, and put some alt country stuff on there (Colter Wall, the Dead South [As a son of Kentucky The Dead South is Peak Blue grass and I'll fight anyone who disagrees], Willie Nelson and what not). But its going to be 90% Metal. Because Metal is Peak Music, and it binds us all together. Rep yourself, rep the stuff you like. Raise Hell, Praise Dale, and FUCKIN SLAYER.

I had a battle vest. We use to call them "patch vests". Mine had two patches above the breast pockets - Slayer on the right (Show no mercy) and Iron Maiden on the left (A real ive one - with bassist Eddie). On the back first I had Piece of Mind, but then I replaced it with Motörhead - Bastards.
I wore mine over this awful 80s leather jacket to emulate the biker style. I wanted a double rider, but back then it was hard and expensive to get one in Eastern Europe. I also wore my pants over the combat boots, biker style, because I had just seen "Fixing the shadow",whileeveryone else were stuffing their pants legs in the boots metal style. I quite liked the biker esthetique so the Bastards patch was awesome not only because of how great that album is, by one of my most favorite bands, but also because it reminded me of a biker club patch. This was probably 20-25 years ago.
I saw a young fellow at the bus stop recently , who was wearing a battle vest. He had a Mercyful Fate's Melissa back patch. Pretty awesome. He was also carrying a casstte deck. Total 80/90s nostalgia. I was in my commuter clothes LOL, jogging pants, wind jacket... I was pissed, like "Damn he can't recognize that I am a brother of metal in these clothes".

First off I Love your battle jacket man! Especially the Horror one. That's very very cool. I made my first battle jacket back in 2018. I did have one before that one. But I'll admit I'm one of the uncool ones and had my mum do it for me. I know it's fuckin shit 😂 but I have learnt from that and when I actually made my 1st jacket I felt a instant connection to it. And I take great pride in it. I have made another jacket since and currently making my 3rd. It's turned to a little hobbie of mine. I generally love making them and seeing other people's jackets is pretty cool.

I think I got a pretty cool story about my vest
One time I was at LAX wearing my battle vest with pride I was sitting with my girlfriend at the time waiting for our flight and this guy comes up to me with a laptop and a camera. The guy sees my vest and it just baffled about all the patches asking me if I really do listen to every band on my vest and obviously I do. The guy then tells me he's a DJ and also makes his own music taking small samples from other bands and songs turning them into his own creation and he wanted to try working with metal. So he takes a picture of my vest front to back and ask me for more band recommendations and I was happy to help. I'm glad I was able to do that for him

Can’t believe it took me this long to see this video. I remember seeing a couple of my friends were putting together battle vests at the time and I was like “damn, that looks so rad and clean”, so naturally, I wanted one too. My mom (thanks mom) took me to Hot Topic and found a blank one for $40. Because we were pretty poor and I was going through middle school and didn’t have a job yet, I was trying to get my mom to order all the patches I wanted and stick them on my vest. She ordered what she could afford at that time. My first ever patch was a Slipknot patch, because they were what got me into metal and because I loved them so much at the time, they were my go to. At the time I was so unwilling to learn how to sew because I was just so lazy. So I get a few more, stick them on, and I sported it for a while, but I just stopped wearing it out a lot, my friends at the time stopped wearing theirs too. I eventually just gave up and stopped getting my mom to do it all for me, so I took the patches off and got rid of it. Fast forward a few years and I get together with my girlfriend. Fast forward a few more years and she starts getting more and more into metal, and she decides she wants to start her own battle vest. Originally I didn’t want to start another one., I also thought my opinion changed because one of my buddies said something I thought I agreed with, but in hindsight, I thought it was pretty stupid, so I was lying to myself. But after talking with her some more and because my old one didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to, I just bought another off Amazon and started putting it together. Many finger pricks later, I’m contemplating on adding more because I have a little bit more room, but not a lot. Battle vests are probably one of the more unique ways you can show off your love for something, or multiple things.

Ok so, it's not the first time I've attended a metal concert before, but recently I've attended my first metal fest, this was my first time experiencing mosh pit(and it was absolutely great), as I usually stood on the side just enjoying the music and the band, and seing many people wearing battle vests really made me to get one as well, thus I came here for more educational purposes on howto's, and I have to say this helped a lot.
In regards to buying patches online, I get one point of view - you're collecting your experiences, it's like a badge of honor like "I've been there/seen them", this is what I do with buying shirts depicting specific tour when I attend a concert, however, I might just missed it, but I have trouble recalling many selling patches at their merch store. Also what about bands that do not perform anymore? Kinda shame if it would be shunned upon to have bands that you love, but broke up long time ago or dont make any apperances anymore.
Anyway, again, thx for the video!

I haven't worn a band "battle vest" since the 90s, but currently rock a nice blue denim jacket covered in horror patches (Zombie/Evil Dead/Fright Night/ the masks from Halloween 3 and plenty of other nice patches) - I've lost count of the amount of times I've been approached by women at my local metal pubs who are really interested in it.
