    I'm strongly opposed to fake battle vests but I understand their existence. Unfortunately metal fashion has become trendy in recent years; celebrities wear metal band shirts, pop and rap artists have made metal style merch and lots of people wear shirts from bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden without listening to them. It seems that fake battle vests are just a by-product of this trend. Although these people still don't like the music and won't associate themselves with it, they adopt the fashion as an edgy accessory.

    • @omegaXXIV
      @omegaXXIV 6 років тому +11

      I agree. Sometimes I'm not too thrilled with this trend but other times I like how they think the metal style is cool so they imitate it. Maybe they don't like the music, but there's at least something about the scene that they like.
      BTW, I like your screen name and your avatar.

    • @Hellboy-ge6po
      @Hellboy-ge6po 6 років тому +19

      +omegaXXIV I personally have a more negative view of this trend because it's really just the mainstream adopting certain aspects of the style while there is still a stigma against the music itself. I especially dislike it when people wear shirts of bands they don't listen to because band merch is supposed to show people that you're a fan of a band but now they're being worn by people who would never associate themselves with the bands whose merch they're wearing. Thanks for the compliment about my screen name and avatar BTW, I honestly expected a negative reaction to it when I picked it but thankfully that hasn't happened lol.

    What annoys me is when stores like Forever 21 take jackets and stuff and sew random patches on them with metal font in an effort to look trendy. I was in the mall a while ago and I stopped in there and saw this jacket with a bunch of patches that looked like they were of bands and that sort of thing- but when I looked closer, it was just cities and shit- San Francisco was written in Metallica's stylization, New York was written like AC/DC, and a bunch of other stuff like that.

    One thing that will always piss me off is fake battlejackets/vests and pre made battlejackets/vests. Annoys me beyond belief, my battlejacket has been something I have worked on for four, nearly five years now. Talking like £300/£400 worth of patches, badges etc and me being blind in one eye and visually impaired in the other and suffering from arthritis I literally had to teach myself how to sew despite struggling to see and feel what I was doing. A lot of time and blood went into it and then you get bellends buying pre made ones and shitty companies who shit on metal making fake ones for a quick cash grab?

    On one of my vests I have more than just metal patches. I have some hip hop pins and patches mixed amongst some punk patches, even movie, or pop culture references. I find myself choosing to wear it more often than my full metal jackets because I feel like it expresses a lot more of my personality and my interests. I’ve gotten a strange look or two from other metal heads tho. I think they are debating if it’s a fake vest or what. I get it though. Seeing Ghost or behemoth patches next to suicidal tendencies, brand new, Kanye, mf doom, or parkway drive patches isn’t something you see everyday. Typically most of the bands are from the same genre or at least similar. But I wanted a jacket that truly showed what I care about and I think it’s pretty sick.

    Well a "battle vest" isn't just associated with metal or bands, only the ones covered in heavy metal patches are. Bikers could easily go and say that metal battle vests are copied from biker's vests covered in patches to support their favourite motorcycle companies, and/or affiliations, which is the exact idea of a metal battle vest, supporting your favourite bands and what parts of metal you affiliate with, whether it's death metal, black metal, etc. Punk fans have also been wearing "battle vests" for a long time.
    "Battle Vests" are about making a statement, whether it's metal, motorcycles, etc. Showing pride to be a part of something that is larger than yourself, but at the same time demonized by mundane society, that's why the term "battle" is there, fighting back, saying "this is who I am, don't like it, well, fuck you, keep walking."
    A lot of this type of thing is what has pushed me farther from wearing my metal battle vest out. But for me, I also have a "battle vest" (or "Witchy Vest" as I call it) that is my path of witchcraft, that vest is filled to the brim with patches solely associating with Witchcraft and Witches, a statement of "Yes I am a Witch, don't like it? fine, fuck off then, I've been walking alone on this path for 20 years just fine." Just like my metal vest is for metal, the only difference between the two for me is that I've been a die hard metal fan for just under 25 years and a Witch of 20 years.
    My "Witchy vest" isn't "fake", because it's as much a part of me as metal and my metal vest, just like other metalhead's vest isn't fake because it's who they are, and so on. I do of course agree that someone having one to "look cool" or as a fashion statement is fake, because metalheads and bikers, and myself wear them pretty much well religiously.
    Overall, there is no "law" to battle vests, anyone can put patches on a vest and wear it, and it doesn't mean they're trying to copy or imitate metalheads, or that they "stole the idea from a metal battle vest", and possibly never even seen a battle vest, but the only one saying that, is the asshole that confronts them or takes pictures that provide hearsay evidence.

      Good comment! I know my partner wears a more punk battle jacket rather than a metal one and my concert friend´s battle jacket is a mix between punk and metal. Mine is going to mostly focus on metal but I might throw in some patches of my favourite games or some lgbt related patches, I am also heavily considering putting safety pins on the battle jacket when I make one to show that I support my partner and my friend.

    ... and i think your assumptions of my answers to those questions are very accurate. There is absolutely no defense to sell or own a "fake patched vest". And to ask someone else to sew on the patches for you is absurd, and i believe that is for the same reasosn that you explained (part of the journey, part of what makes it unique and "yours" etc.).
    I had absolutely no idea how to sew when i started mine, but i looked it up and then kind of improvised as i went along. As frustrating it was at the points when i messed up, i don't regret any of that today since that really added to the experience and to the accomplishmet to when i finally got it right. I could also add that i refuse to re-sew the first patches even if i messed up alittle. The reason is because those mistakes are a part of the journey. I can look at those mistakes and say, "hey here's the first i ever sew" and then look at the other patches and really see how my vest and skill has improved over time.
    To wear a vest like this is a very meaningful thing and a sign of a deep passion, therefore i believe that you need to "earn the right" to wear it. In my book, you earn the right by spending the time, energy, dedication and maybe even sweat and blood to actually make it.
    ok this quickly became a long ass comment, so i'll stop here i guess.

    I've spent a decent amount of my own money on getting a good amount of patches of bands/albums I enjoy (somewhat specific but ones I could easily find patches for) to have a good start to my vest, aswell as the specific areas in which to put them.
    I'm currently having my mom sew them on but I'm learning in the process of how to sew while she does them so I can learn to do it on my own for possibly future patches.
    But all in all, I've had this vest stuff planned out for awhile already and took my time before going forward, I made switches & sacrifices when I chose them because I didnt have enough money to get a ton at once. But yea, I'm still proud of the effort I've put into it thus far.
    I'm so glad I found this video!!

    • @fatmetalheadnerd4376
      @fatmetalheadnerd4376 Рік тому

      I know this comment is five years old but I just want to say that the whole "You have to seen the band live to put their patch on your vest" thing is complete horse shit. Metal bands aren't always super popular and a lot of metalheads live in places where metal bands never come through. So it would take a lot of money and enough free time to travel to go see every band that you want to put a patch on your vest.
      So in other words you have to have quite a bit of money to throw around in order to have seen every band live that you have a patch of. And battle vests should not be a contest of how much money you have. There's nothing metal at all about that. Not to even mention the fact that a lot of the older bands can't even be seen live anymore because they're not even together anymore or their main members have passed away.
      The only thing that matters when putting a patch on your vest is that you love their music or that you're a fan of them. That's it.
      Fuck that "you need to have seen them live" elitist bullshit. It's stupid as hell and anyone who believes that is the real poser.

    I saw you built yours, so I decided I would build my own! I put patches, studs, 3 inch spikes on it, part from old built belts on it, and redid the buttons. It's got lots of wear on it from fake blood from my bands shows but my thoughts on a fake one. Very similar to what you said, is that I feel as if it's people who like the metal look but they don't want to commit. For some people, they just don't know where to go looking for metal patches or which ones to get. I want to look cool and edgy but just don't know how to. Or it's a thing out of laziness. They don't understand the feeling of having your own battle vest that you built, and they are too lazy to make one but want to look cool and edgy. So they just buy one instead of making one. I feel as if the people who would wear a fake battle vest are the same people who go to a hot topic and buy any metal band shirt and claim to be a huge metal head. Love your vids! Stay metal!! 🤘

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 6 років тому +4

      I think that in my time among both metal and punk fans, I've only seen one completely DIY battlevest - the poor fellow who made it had copied the cover from Voivod's "War and Pain" album, and, though I'd definitely give him an 'A' for Effort, he was no Away....
      I'm like the guy in the video: I could sympathize if you physically couldn't sew your own commercial patches onto your own commercial jacket, and I can equally sympathize when most folks really couldn't sew up their own totally home-made copies of elaborate band logos and cover art.
      At least with the commercial, official merchandise patches, you're paying your favorite bands a little extra money... I'm sure no realist ever joined a punk or metal band seriously expecting to make a lot of money doing it, but I'm sure both punk and metal musicians would appreciate a little extra income to pay the bills with, especially in a world where even well-known punk and metal musicians have to keep their day jobs to make ends meet.
      With these $400+ "fake" battle-jackets with fake patches, I'd guess the only folks getting paid are Hot Topic and a couple sweat shops somewhere in Honduras or the Philippines....

    One thing I will say about battle vests as I think we need to keep gatekeeping to a minimal, I’ve seen a lot of of people bash other people for washing their vest. But that’s their best so they could do whatever they want with it.
    Metalhead have a lot in common, but it’s not like we’re all clones of one person .. I personally do not live up to the metalhead stereotype of being Unclean… I’m actually kind of a clean freak, so yeah, I wash my vest because I’m very sensitive to smell, and I get really bothered by continuous stench…… I also have my room in order, I can’t even stand it if there’s like a T-shirt on my floor. It’s just how I am. But I still love the scene, and I have two battle vest that I have made and it’s really awesome to see how they are coming along
    I’m a Christian metalhead, Christian group called sanctuary international and I know the guy that does all the artwork for their merch. So I took a couple T-shirts and I cut them up and I sewed his artwork onto the back of one of my jackets, and it looks really cool. And he really appreciated it.
