You should watch The Angels - Am I ever gonna see your face again? Another song Every Aussie knows and sings along to.😁. Has a bit of swearing in it😁
Love the blues harp
@@julzhunt7790 the Angels are the best Australian live act ever there more than , am I ever gonna see .go listen to an album ,no exit
This song is embedded in the Australian DNA.
Travel to anywhere in the world you will get Aussies singing along to it.
And Kiwis!!
Not me.
No Way.. 😉 🇦🇺 ✌️

Truth
As an Aussie I’m so rapt you did this one! The guys name is Jimmy Barnes, and he’s a powerhouse. Back when this was recorded, he was a terrifyingly huge drinker and this shows the raw talent he still had. He’s cleaned up now, but still a national legend!
Not to mention, he was about 50% amphetamines...but yeah, Barnsey is 100% Aussie rock god (despite actually being Scottish).
.
Btw guys, I am so glad you did this one. Reactions to Cold Chisel are *extremely* few and far between.
Which is amazing. I'm sure you've heard of the "big 4" of thrash? Well, Chisel was one of the big 3 of Oz Rock, along with The Angels and AC/DC. I know you know Akka Dakka, but check out "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again?" by The Angels (preferably something recorded live in Australia - you'll see why 😏).
@@uncle_thulhu haha can't wait to see that!!!
He lived in Elizabeth Downs South Australia before he became huge
Ex-pat from Adelaide, now in Canada. Nothing takes me home quicker than my very old copy of East.
He used to drink a bottle of Vodka in the morning, then another bottle on stage …
Nam vet here, this song by chisel and "I was only 19" (AKA "A walk in the light green") by Red Gum pretty well sum up a lot of our feelings about our experiences.
Those are 2 of the greatest ever Australian rock songs, cheers for mentioning 'I was only 19' to anytime I hear that song I get shivers down my spine,Thanks for your service mate 🍻✌
I wanted to take the time to thank you for your service. If it wasn't for men like you, the world would be a far different place. The youth of today, just do not understand the sacrifices you all made so we can enjoy the freedoms we do today. I cannot imagine what it was like for those who fought in Vietnam, I thank you for your courage and service.
Not about Vietnam but I can’t listen to waltzing Matilda by the pogues without it being overwhelming and I’m only 35
James my respect for your service , always makes me so thankful I was to young to be there but old enough to loose some good friends, there but for the grace go I.
There is a cover of only 19 by the herd which I have a lot of love for, the original is iconic but appreciate that they brought an important song to the modern day
I 100% guarantee most Aussies know these lyrics better than those of our National Anthem. So much so that it's kind of become an unofficial anthem itself.
Source: Aussie.
Fact
I thought this was our national anthem? Isn't it?
Although I would say 'You're The Voice' by John Farnham is our national anthem.
Yes.
True story: I was on a train back to Strathfield station in Sydney after the Foo Fighters concert in 2018. Our carriage sang a snippets of a couple Foo Fighters songs before we broke into a rousing rendition of Khe Sahn. I helped the drunk guy next to me get the words in the right order. Good times.
This and Farnsy's The Voice, the other Aussie anthem
It’s such an upbeat song… until you listen to the lyrics.
To a veteran and their families it’s incredibly heartbreaking.
Exactly, you see yobbo's half pissed trying to sing it, and the meaning has gone a mile over their heads. As my vet Uncle said, it dosent mean the same to them as me.
Sadly most people get them WRONG! I have heard some flagrant bastardisations of this song lyrically! LOL!
Personally I love when the war is over. Bow river is great as well. As is flame trees and star hotel... and wild thing... and ...
Ur choice their in my favourite songs playlist ..oh how I would've loved to see him live...Aussie on fire
Exactly
@@malcolmcurthoys5273 I saw him at The Ferntree Gully Hotel once. He had the whisky bottle in hand whilst belting out the songs. He staggered to the edge of the low stage and kind of flunked off rather than full on falling. He didn't seem to even be aware he had done it, he just kept singing. The crowd loved it of course. He's managed to keep the bottle in his hand the whole time.
@@triarb5790 classic that would've been GOLD yeah he's from Elizabeth here in Adelaide he used to do shows for the bikies in his early days so ur comment doesn't suprise me..cheers mate for ur comment
Agreed.
Cold Chisel is one of the biggest ever bands to play in the genre of "Pub Rock". in the 70s and 80s you could go to almost any pub in Australia and party to this sort of music Live. a couple of other bands worth checking out are the Angels and Screaming Jets. they are both awesome.
70s and 80s pub rock in Oz was the best time of my life. I saw the Angels, Cold Chisel, Aussie Crawl, Split Enz, Mother Goose, The Sports, Swannee, Midnight Oil, Paul Kelly, Screaming Jets, AC/DC (yes in a pub), Billy Thorpe - and the list goes on...
@@aussierhino471 mate if I was 10 years older I would have been the same.
Really "pub rock" was only an Aussie thing until we exported AC/DC
@@aussierhino471 sneaking into the playroom or jet club at 15 to see those bands
@@jeffreyflynn2805 Whatever it took mate!
Welcome to the world of Cold Chisel.
This is only the tip of the iceberg! Jimmy and Cold Chisel are one of the best live bands ever.
You really should do a live version of Bow River and When the War is Over.
Flame Trees.
Live version amazing
+1 for Bow River... had to be a live version.
I can't name a bad Chisel number. Some I like better than others but not a bad one in the bunch.
Btw in a stadium hearing that harmonica solo is awesome.
"There legs were often open but there minds were always closed", is the line that got this song banned on Australian commercial radio when it was released.
I think this is the only song that went to number 1 without ever being played on radio. Now thats the sign of a truly great song.
Really? It was played a lot on NZ radio. Interesting.
Wow a cold chisel reaction. This is a great Aussie rock band led by the great Jimmy Barnes and this song is an Australian classic that everybody knows the words to. Love it.
I've loved your requests, Them G. Happy to here you've enjoyed this one from me. Can't go wrong with Chisel.
@@TrojBlu Thanks for the kind words. Love Cold Chisel.
You guys might enjoy THE ANGELS. I suggest 'Take a Long Line' as a start point.
And if they do Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, it HAS to be a live version!
Oh, and they need to do Shadow Boxer too.
Totally agree, Take a Long Line, Shadow Boxer, No Secrets, Am I ever gonna see your face again.
Dogs are Talking- Let the night roll on ..
Pretty sure that was Sydney entrainment centre on the Last Stand tour.
I saw them on that same tour and we had won the America's Cup at 5am that morning.
The venue (The old Newcastle Workers Club) released 1500 more mezzanine tickets in honour of the win.
It was epic...and that would be an understatement.
Mossey and Barnsey are Australian rock royalty !!!
One of my favourite rock bands. You should listen to "Bow River" live which features the lead guitarist (Ian Moss), who has a great voice, singing with the lead singer, Jimmy Barnes. Jimmy Barnes is a legend in Australia. These blokes were brilliant live and they cover so many different genres of rock. Another good Cold Chisel song is "Flame Trees". I subscribed because you often listen to Metallica and now you've added a Cold Chisel song. Great stuff!
You don't know what's it's like to be an Aussie who's been in the US for nine years now (tis me), all those years away from home, and then hear Khe Sanh.
Thankyou for this reaction. Love you guys. Jimmy is a living legend here in Oz. Absolutely prolific performer with Cold chisel, and as a solo artist. check out "Big Enough" by Kirin J. Callinan, as a giggle. He released an autobiography, Working Class Boy a few years ago. He speaks out about child abuse now following his own experiences. But for a harmonica artist like no other…Chris Wilson, RIP, would have to be one of the best. And his blues music and soulful voice make him a must for you to hear, Julia
OMG so thrilled to see this! This song is so iconic here in Australia! Cold Chisel are iconic! Dead set legends, all of them. Every Australian knows this song and if they don't we have them deported 😁 You should know it was written by the pianist, Don Walker. Please do Bow River 🙏🙏
Cold chisel suck.
@@pauljarvis446 oh, well, thanks for your input 😂
Dei here. Fantastic reaction, as always, and it was probably the right choice as a substitute after Powderfinger's Like a Dog got blocked. Really enjoyed this considering it was a very last minute thing. This song never gets old. Jimmy and the boys slayed it. Sadly, the last plane out of Sydney left a long time ago, and with the lockdown, ..."it's really got me worried, I'm going nowhere and I'm in hurry". Didn't realise how appropriate those words were! lol.
One of Australia's wildest bands, thanks for reviewing
Dave Blight is the guy on harmonica, was part of their touring band. He had his own band in Adelaide called The Flyers which included the brother of Phil Small the bass player for Cold Chisel they were a great pup band.
Yeah we have so many Unofficial Anthems in Australia as we had the best rock band and artist in the 60, 70 & 80s etc Jimmy Barnes is a rock Legend he’s had a great career with Cold Chisel and he own solo career which you should check out especially he’s duo with John Farnham- Something is wrong with my baby.. it’s just Amazing 2 of the the worlds best doing what they do best singing their souls out.. do yourself a favour and listen too it you won’t be sorry !🇦🇺
chisel is one of the most iconic Aussie bands, they their "last stand" concert, they were so good live.
To have been at a Chisel gig in the 70s/early 80s was amazing, you never left sober or straight but it was electric.
Never left straight?
Legendary singer, song is an anthem. Thanks for reacting to it
What’s amazing about Chisel is the variety in their music. Truly an amazing mix of a musicians band but with great sensibilities on song craft and arrangement, making it all super accessible, without watering down the quality of the musicianship. They should have been really big around the world.
Glad you guys have found our Cold Chisel or should say mates they are the greatest live band equal to Queen on their day so sorry so many missed them.
I have been to one of their concerts. Jimmy Barnes is one of a kind and a legend in Oz. Their performances are electric.
As an Aussie child of the 80s I don’t remember ever not knowing this song. Cold Chisel really are one of a kind.
A band called game over did a crazy punk cover of this song. Highly influential Aussie band worth checking out for any song, game over, to reiterate :)
"what would it be like being in a stadium" etc.
Even just being in a PUB when that song came on the jukebox was crazy, back in the day
Iconic. Thanks guys.
Grew up going to the Highwycombe, Nookenburra and Raffles pub seeing Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes. IT goes OFF like nothing else
My generation grew up with the Cold Chisel and Barnsey.
But it wasn’t until decades later that most of us actually understood what that song was about.
Jimmy Barnes is still going strong. He's fantastic!😃 He can still bang out a brilliant performance at 66!! Thanks😊🌏🪐🌕🙏🐦🇦🇺🌸🦋⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🏡🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
You have to react to Jimmmy Barnes and John Farnham “when something is wrong with my baby”
The live version
MIchelle Arbery yes when it comes to John and Jimmy always the live version
Has to be the live version!
This is an Iconic Australian "Anthem".... It is a tribute to Australian Military Service Personnel. Those that served in the Vietnam War and then came home to an un-caring Nation. Many struggled with PTSD and re-integrating back to civilian live. Many felt forgotten an unappreciated. A similar story faces our current Veterans from Afghanistan and Iraq. They deserve better.
You should hear him sing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Chills.
Cold Chisel are rock royalty in Australia and Jimmy Barnes is a rock God. Try Flame Trees and When the War is Over.
Khe Sanh is so well known by so many Aussies that we're honestly surprised that its iconic lyrics are not yet on the naturalisation exam for people who wish to reside in Australia.
Cold Chisel with Jimmy Barnes produced many, epic hits & many of us here are surprised that they aren't as well recognised globally as are AC/DC, INXS, Men at Work, John Paul Young, The Easybeats & others
The legend that is Jimmy Barnes, here in OZ he is rock royalty, anything he does either on his own or with Cold Chisel is brilliant.
One of the greatest. Unfortunately the live version distorts the lyrics a bit for stage appeal. Brilliant song and everyone knows the lyrics anyway so it doesn't really matter, but if you have never heard them before you probably miss the absolutely brilliant poetry and story telling. Great reaction though.
Agreed. He is brilliant live for his performance and energy, but to really appreciate the the power of his lyrics you need to hear a good quality recording.
Agree, I was disappointed a better version wasn't used, but still awesome.
Seeing this live in concert with another 20,000 Aussies is beyond words, the stage lights up, the piano kicks in and Jimmy starts to belt it out......everyone instantly loses their shit and goes nuts, if you dont know the words to this song your not Australian, hearing and singing along with 20,000 people is one of the greatest experiences of my life......i miss the 80's
Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham a two legends of the Australian music scene and a good friends. React to jimmy barnes and john farnham "something is wrong with my baby"
The live version though. It is the best version by far!
Another great Aussie band where the whole pub sings along is The Screaming Jets. They had 2 great songs - Better and Helping Hand. Both are great pub songs and I now you will love them.
I can remember nights at the Observer Hotel (pub under the Sydney Harbour Bridge) where there were about 20 people and this band came on and tried out some new material - it was the Barking Spiders - who are Cold Chisel... Amazing nights with Jimmy and boys trying out new material... Incredible...
Jimmy Barnes is awesome! Seen him live heaps. Love him to bits!
Would be great to see a live version of Bow River.
I must admit, I came very close to requesting Bow River, that and/or the in the round live version of When the War is Over. I think Bow River is definitely worth doing.
OK, Bow River is locked and loaded... It's in the queue!
@@TrojBlu Awesome!
@@TrojBlu ugh. i just requested it as well. from the 'ringside' tour - then i see this comment
@@kane29842 Maybe one of us can switch to When the War is Over. Which version of Bow River do you think is best? I really do like the energy of the 80's version. Will check the ringside version, though. I'd also like to do a Hunters & Collectors at some point.
Saw them live 9 years ago at a winery in Margaret River, Western Australia... Fantastic concert!🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Cold Chisel Forever! I saw them in concert so many times and it was always epic.
Same with The Angels!
A Don Walker / Cold Chisel classic. Written by Don in Sweetheart's Cafe, Kingscross, Sydney. As in Breakfast at Sweetheart's. The coffee's hot and the toast is brown, hey street sweeper??
Watched him many times, absolute legend!
First album I ever bought as a teen in the 80's was Cold Chisel 'Barking spiders live' - I then became obsessed and followed Cold Chisel everywhere I could. I'm still obsessed with Jimmy - he's now a phenomenal soul singer.
If you wanna check out another banger by Cold Chisel try “Bow River” and “Forever Now”.
In his drinking day’s sculling a bottle of vodka was nothing to the legend Jimmy Barnes. Best place beside Steve(RIP)He was a crisp drummer just driving the beat. All the bands partied hard. Everyone sang along.
Hey guys.. great reaction to something very special for Aussies 🇦🇺
You mentioned a crowd singing along, well that’s why is the unofficial national anthem.. it got the title because it’s said Australians know the lyrics more than the do the national anthem 👍
James Witt...... THANK YOU, and all that served..... truely honoured to see that your still surviving........thank god i have never had to serve.... not that i would rule it out...age would restrict me now 56yrs young....i love Australia....but at times we forget who the real hero's are that continue to suffer to this day....i owe you and all service people for OUR freedom's....i tear up when i hear redgum DIGGER....HOPE you have support from my taxes......have friends that served....
Love this song

The boys who were running the Aussie pavilion at the Shanghai expo in 2010 used to close the pavilion at 6pm then do a live show round the back until midnight. All the other countries used to just close down. So the Aussie live show drew big crowds. I got them to play this one night and then remembered there might be a problem with a particular line - they improvised with ‘there ain’t nothing like the kisses of a beautiful Chinese princess, I’m gonna hit some Hong Kong nightclub all night long’
Ps Flame Trees is always my favourite Chisel. That, and forever now and when the war is over.
Isn't it mattress, not nightclub??
Yeap - “I’m gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long.” but that doesn’t stop the punters from singing “the last *train* out of Sydney’s almost gone!” 😂
@@scrotrot1595 yes - but we were in Shanghai. Not exactly the best place to use the correct lyrics. Luckily, even though it was a big crowd, me and the other Aussies from the pavilion seemed to be the only people who knew the words and spoke english.
@@SeanAlcorn lol. I thought it was ‘train’ for years at first.
Jimmy Barnes grew up in Northern suburbs of Adelaide where our local Car Manufacturer HOLDENS was and worked there as a teenager , He wrote a song when they closed the car plant down called SHUTTING DOWN OUR TOWN and I think his best song ever , P>S I also grew up in Northern Suburbs and love Holden cars and his song makes me shed a tear thinking of all those guys that lost there jobs .Jimmy Barnes put on a concert on the last day of Holdens for all the workers at our football ground for free to say thanks to the workers , He is a Fking LEGEND in Australia . Please do a review of the song for me . Thanks guys .
Aussie bloke here 80's kid. You guys randomly came up on my tv on youtube, never seen you before, so I just had to sign in and say that it was like hearing this iconic Aussie anthem for the first time again, sharing your pure joy. Loved it! Wooo!
Thank you for listening to Aussie music
Cold Chisel always wanted to be an album band but there was demand to release Khe Sanh as their first single so they did. It was banned soon after due to the nature of the song .... then they became the biggest rock act of its era.
YES!!!
Please keep going down the rabbit hole that is Chisel.
Miss ya Steve x
Cheers Australia xx
Australians who grew up in the 80s and 90's know what they got.
We're well aware of the absolute world class talent and the plethora of incredible rock we produced at that time.
With a population at the time of around 16 million, along side the United States Southern rock movement, Australia owned rock'n roll at that time.
It was an incredible time to be alive because we all knew it.
These were our anthems.
Rock on my Gen X Aussie brothers and sisters.
Thanks for your interest.
One of the finest songs ever written and I'm not even Australian!
I’m Irish but lived in Brisbane for six years. I love this song!
Guarantee you this song is being played at at least 100 bbq’s around the country right now…6 beers in, probably get a run to close out the night too👍🏾
Jimmy Barnes was our Aussie epitome of a hard rocker. He partied hard in those years. Luckily for us, he is still rocking but has cleaned up and his voice is as good as it ever was. He is a legend over here.
You have no idea just HOW good his vocals are....Jimmy is still kicking it in 2021 and is amazing
To REALLY appreciate this tune, you need to be in an Aussie pub on a Friday night, when this is played. ALL Aussies turn into headbangers - LOVE IT 😁😁
You need to watch Jimmy Barnes and his son David Campbell sing “You’ll never walk alone “ at the 2015 Carols by candlelight Christmas concert.
salute to Anzacs so reminds me of my uncles Victor company.
I can see why you guys like this rock song. It has Melody, Harmony and Rhythm 👌👍
In Australia we call this a pub anthem and as some on else commented they know the words to this better than the National anthem
One hell of a KICK ASS song that is undeniably legendary. Another is Working Class Man live 1988, featuring Dave Amado on guitar (now with REO Speedwagon). If you want another absolute classic and iconic AUSSIE ROCK anthem, then this is another.
LOVE YOU GUY'S FOREVER FOR DOING THIS MY BROTHER WHO IS NOW 74 WAS A SAPPER IN VIETNAM I SAW COLD CHISEL OVER 40 YEARS AGO IN BRISBANE AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺 💙 ❤
You can tell a great concert with Marshal amps on stage XD
We studied the lyrics to this in high school history. It is literally a snapshot of Australian history.
these guys are Aussie rock legends !! the best ever !! it is a pub fav , when this plays everyone is up dancing
Outstanding - gave me Goosebumps - being in the crowd during a Chisel concert is sensational!!
Jimmy Barnes , Ian Moss and Don Walker. Aussie Legends.
There was a brilliant slower acoustic version of this song that was done for the commemorations of the battle of Long Tan that you should check out. Can I also suggest 'I was only 19' by Redgum another classic Aussie song about the aftermath of the Vietnam war.
Jimmy Barnes has just come out of hospital following an operation, but trust me he will be back rocking in the New Year.
I feel like I have to comment... When I was 14 Cold Chisel did their reunion tour (unfortunately missing the drummer as he has passed away)
I was pulled out of school, funnily enough it was during music class, and I got to go to the theatre to see them play.
They were so amazing, Jimmy's voice is still absolutely amazing.
But during this song and Flame Trees, I saw everyone jump down the building and join the main crowd down the bottom. I'm talking people who were well into their 50's jumping down the stairs to run and make a mosh pit.
I've been to quite a few gigs, not sure I'll ever beat that one.
Cold Chisel as Aussie as you can get, Barnsey and Mossy are still rocking it here in Australia. Should check out some of Ian Moss's solo albums
Cold Chisel are one of those rare bands where every single member, even the drummer wrote a hit song. Legendary pub band.
THE BEST!!!!! From an Aussie!!!
Such an aussie classic - so glad you guys did this one!!
Another great live Cold Chisel song - "Star Hotel".
This may as well have been the Rydalmere Family Hotel. We were drunk on an Ouso and two beers with this playing in our face with an outrageous $5 cover charge. Barnes with his head in the AC iducts above the stage and standing on the speakers while singing,,,,,,and we, the punters sweating like pigs in the pit but everyone loved it.
Yer I seen them there in 82 or 83.
I have had the privilege of seeing Cold Chisel about 4 times and they are a great live act. Jimmy Barnes is an incredible vocalist and Ian Moss a crazy good guitarist - although doesn't get the chance to rip it up on here. So many awesome sings from Cold Chisel. Check out the live version of When the War Is Over (A beautiful ballad).
Absolutely All Aussie know this incredible song jimmy has also amazing range in his vocal’s. Seeing them life in a pub on a Friday night gets everyone tapping away . Another great reaction
Cold Chisel is easily one of the top 3 Aussie bands with INXS and AC/DC of all time. but most Americans only know of 2 of the 3. I have been to about 5 or 6 Chisel concerts and it is always fun, loud, and enjoyable, all Chisel fans come together and lift the atmosphere even higher.
This was a huge " pub anthem" but was never a commercial hit the line " and their legs were often open but their minds were always closed" had it banned from radio. the other thing about them was if you went along to a concert you couldn't sing along. As they were so drunk and wasted they forgot the lyrics and the order of the verses. at one concert singing bow river Ian Moss made up a hole new verse on the spot. But that is one of the reasons we loved them and they just rocked. sounds lame but it was awesome saw them too many times to remember and every concert was awesome. check out, bow river, flame trees, when the war is over, breakfast at sweethearts ,just to name a few.
Another Aussie rock anthem from Jimmy and the band. Mossy is a legend too. Doesn’t come better than this as far as rock anthems go. What a live performance!?
Cold Chisel was an iconic Aussie band. Jimmy Barnes (singer) is a legend. Check 'em out.
Each line of this song took me at least a couple of paragraphs to explain it to my non Australian friend.
When he finally understood the song he shed a tear. When I saw his tears I knew he understood this unofficial Australian anthem.
