This track is "the" Aussie anthem. Everyone in Australia knows it and walk in to any pub in the land and this song comes on it's an interesting experience lol.
There was a petition to have a referendum to change the national anthem to khe sanh in the late 90s that got over 3 million signatures, Australia's population at the time was 20 million.
Your reaction to our Australian music scene is awesome to see, we’re very proud of our bands & singers. You might also like the live version of the Beatles song “Help” from John Farnham, live with the Melbourne Symphony Orcestra, it is also a remarkable vocal performance. Keep it up & we’ll have to make you an honorary Aussie 👍
I saw them live at a local pub before they released their first single. That was 'Khe Sanh', Not a bad effort first up and they were always as good live as they sounded on record.
A very drunk jimmy killing it right down to the mic stand throw at the end the whole band going nuts moss was awesome as usuai and the iook from the piano player at them was priceless greatness of real music and real crowds😊
Check out Bruce Springsteen's wife's favourite song, Flame Trees by Cold Chisel. Jimmy was at a Springsteen concert and Bruce invited him backstage after the show just so his wife could meet him.
That wasn't the greatest mix for discerning lyrics but it is basically the story of a Vietnam vet's difficulty adjusting to civilian life after the trauma of war. Lots of classic Chisel songs to choose including Bow River (live 2006) and Georgia, both featuring Ian Moss who is not only a great guitarist but also a fabulous singer.

Renee Geyer had some success in the States during the 70s on R&B radio. She moved to the States had had success performing back up vocals with the likes of Toni Childs and Shaka Khan. Wasn’t able to break through though and moved back to Australia
Great live band. This is one of the alltimers. For US friends check out the cover of Conway Twitty’s “It’s only make believe” from the 1983 Last Stand show! Superlative

Chisel’s Wild Thing live is probably the most extreme of them leaving nothing on stage. Bow River and When the War is Over from the Ringside tour are amazing
Check out chisel performing Wild Thing. Jimmy was absolutely wild back then and you can see how good the band is because nobody (including Jimmy) knew what he was going to do next. And it's not just a Jimmy band. Check out cold chisel Georgia. Chisel made Jimmy
Jimmy is a big star gotta go to a big concert to see him, but Dave Blight on harmonica still does pubs with Mick Kidd and can see them in SA bars. They went to Mempis blues challenge together with Lazy Eye 1st 2 Sth Aussie groups to compete and did well. Dave and Mick as duo and Lazy Eye as 3 piece band. Search blue tongue blues if wanna hear Lazy eye.
Great reaction. Aussie bands of the era tended to leave it all on stage, the joy of performing and their respect of their adoring audiences combining to produce lightning in a bottle. To be successful in Australia you had to be good live. They toured & gigged constantly, developing fan bases that bought records & drove radio play. There are dozens of brilliant bands & artists, but make sure you don't miss on Midnight Oil in full flight, their "Oils On Water" concert is chef's kiss brilliant. Peter Garrett isn't the greatest "singer" as in vocal style, but as the front man of a jet engined powered band he is peerless. Check out "Stand In Line," the set closer of Oils On Water to witness rock greatness.
Make sure your Bow River reaction is the "Ringside" tour and not the one badged "official live version". It's good, don't get me wrong, but the Ringside one is even better. Thanks for a great reaction to an epic song
One of Australia’s unofficial national anthems. I recommend checking out Midnight Oil. Amazing Aussie band. Crowded House another one with roots in New Zealand and Aus.
I know the lyrics and that was fast and hard to hear. Not only does Jimmy have a some Aussie accent it is peppered with some Scottish too. Chisel are amazing and we grew up on them. I love that the world is discovering them. If you ever need show notes for Aussie artists let me know ❤

I got a little bit of a country bounce in some parts of this song, and as someone else said, I can hear a little early Elton in some of Jimmy’s phrasing. Brand new for me. I liked this very much. Thanks Michael. I’m off to get myself a vegemite sandwich now!! ✌️👏
Can I make a suggestion. Also listen to Johnny diesel. He is Jimmy’s bro in law. Go watch him sing live. 15ft of snow and bro watch I’ve been loving you. Trust me please
Jimmy can be hard to understand at times... good call pulling lyrics up in future. This is one of their more decorated songs, but far from their best. Worth checking out more of this band - Bow River is probably the logical next step.
Hey man , I luved this reaction to Australia’s national anthem, try John Farnham live -Help with Melbourne symphony orchestra, you’re looking for the best ? well look no further
Haha yes…lyrics are important in this song and jimmy’s microphone technique isn’t the greatest here. Also the song is played a little too fast here which doesn’t help. The studio version of this is better IMO But if you want an amazing live performance from them, check out their cover of Wild Thing. It’s about 7-8 minutes long (!) and it’s delicious chaos. Aussie Pub rock at its best
Not my favourite song...Heard way too many drunken cricket team mates who can't sing stick this on the jukebox at the pub 10-20 times in a row, every week. Must have been the only sone they knew the words to. In hindsight, also a pity, that the club member that turned out to be our best singer didn't hang with us at the pub, a Guy Sebastian version would have been cool.
The thing about Australian music even to this day is - if you can't actually sing and perform live.... with no autotune or BS.... you don't make it.... it's why Pink loves to perform and tour here..... we don't put up with diva BS...... we'll boo you off the stage....

Rockin, head bangin and boppin in my chair here !!!!!!!
In the Waugh twins era, the Test team adopted this as their anthem, Que ?
That's gotta be runner up for the Australian National anthem.
This is a great version. The 2003 'In the round' version is peak Cold Chisel imo

Speed, vodka and a voice like a runaway train. 👍
Love it when Mossy takes the lead. Nice smooth change.

The great song writing of Don Walker on Keys, Dave Bright on harp.

I left my heart to the sappers 'round Khe Sanh
And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the blackmarket man
I had the Vietnam cold turkey
From the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand
About the long forgotten dockside guarantees
How there were no V-day heroes in 1973
How we sailed into Sydney Harbour
I saw an old friend but I couldn't kiss her
She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land
She was like so many more from that time on
Their lives were all so empty, until they found their chosen one
And their legs were often open
But their minds were always closed
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains
And the legal pads were yellow, hours long, paypackets lean
And the telex writers clattered where the gunships once had been
Car parks made me jumpy
And I never stopped the dreams
Or the growing need for speed and novacaine
So I worked across the country from end to end
Tried to find a place to settle down
Where my mixed up life could mend
I held a job on an oil-rig
Flying choppers when I could
But the nightlife nearly drove me round the bend
And I've travelled 'round the world from year to year
And each one found me aimless, one more year the worse for wear
And I've been back to South East Asia
And the answer sure ain't there
But I'm drifting north, to check things out again
Yes I am
Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And only seven flying hours, and I'll be landing in Hong Kong
And there ain't nothing like the kisses
From a jaded Chinese princess
I'm gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long
Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And it's really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
O-o-o-oh, it's a-really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
