Never heard this song before, but DANG! The lyric 'wasting my days on the factory floor' hit me HARD. I spent 15 years of my life working at a pork packing house. I HATED that job with the heat of a thousand fiery suns, but it was one of the better paying jobs in town. Since I had a family to feed, to work I went. An old-timer there told me if I ever got a chance to leave that small Iowa town, to leave, or I'd be working there for the rest of my life. So, when my kids were grown and my ex-wife left me, I left town quickly. I miss the fishing there, but I will NEVER set foot in that town again. GREAT song, thank you for introducing me to it!

Cold Chisel is as working class in its lyrics to an Aussie as Springsteen is to an American if you know what I mean. GO and listen to a song of theirs called Flame trees, about a guy coming back to a small town after a terrible incident made him leave. Possibly listen to it with the lyrics on. Will resonate with you.

Possibly the most iconic Australian band. Deep dive into Cold Chisel is required:
    “Flame Trees”
    “When the War is Over”
    “You Got Nothing I Want”
    “Choir Girl”
    “Rising Sun”
    “Saturday Night”
    “Star Hotel”
    “Forever Now”
    “Standing on the Outside”
Plenty more, but that’s a good start!

Cold Chisel is about as working class as you can get. They started out in the northern satellite town of Adelaide in South Australia, called Elizabeth. It was a car factory town, and these guys knew what factory floor work was like. Their first big break was regular weekend gigs at a large seaside pub in Adelaide called The Largs Pier Hotel. They then decided to move to the city of Sydney for access to more venues. They are unashamedly Australian working class, and this is reflected in their music.

They have so many great songs..and so many hits in Australia and NZ including the song they wrote called “you’ve got nothing I want” which is about how they went to the US and were treated bad by music executive..
Jimmy Barnes there usual lead singer also has a great solo career and has sung with likes of fellow aussies, INXS, Keith urban, teskey brothers and John Farnham whilst also singing “simply the best” with Tina Turner
Jimmy was also in band with members of Australian band AC/DC called fraternity before they became AC/DC
If you really want to be blown away by Jimmy’s singing you should watch him singing “a change is gonna come” it’s probably the best vocal performance I’ve ever heard

Well, that is your subjective opinion.
I've seen all the Pub Rock Bands in Australia and I've enjoyed a lot of them more than I did Cold Chisel.
There is something that isn't quite right about the sound or the pace of the songs.
Whereas when I saw V Spy V Spy in concert the 30 or 40 times I did, I got a much warmer feeling.
The topics and lyrics of V Spy V Spy were very relevant to Australian society.
Both Australian Crawl in concert and The Radiators in concert were very strong and powerful.
More exciting and uplifting power came from the awesome Hunters & Collectors.
As a Teenger I saw Bon Scott out front for AC/DC in the 70's.
When I saw Bon Scott it was at Outdoor gigs presented by Radio Stations such as 2SM and JJ 1540am.
Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs blew my head off.
Lobby Lloyd & The Coloured Balls assaulted my senses.
Rose Tattoo, the original line up, were one of the most confronting Bands that a young teenager could encounter in the 1970's.
Some of the best Pub Rock Bands I've ever seen are Radio Birdman,
The New Christs, The Celibate Rifles, & The Lime Spiders.
I've never seen a more intense and passionate Rock Band in Australia than
      Midnight Oil.
Let's not overlook The Angels and The Choirboys and The Screaming Jets
      and The Living End.
Died Pretty, The Hard-Ons, The Hoodoo Gurus, You Am I.
      The list goes on.........
Cold Chisel are great, I agree, yet there are many Bands that I've enjoyed seeing LIVE far more.
Since seeing THE CASANOVAS at The Annandale Hotel in 2002, I've bought all their recorded material.
I'd rather see Eddy Current Suppression Ring LIVE at The Hopetoun Hotel than Cold Chisel.
I'd prefer to see TMG, The Ted Mulry Gang, LIVE in concert, with Steve Mulry on Lead Vocals.
People with limited knowledge about Australian music make sweeping generalisations by saying that Cold Chisel are " Australia's greatest ever pub band"

About time you got back to Chisel. Their main lead on this one is Ian Moss (Mossy) and the legendary Jimmy Barnes (Barnesy) taking secondary vocals. These guys were massive in Ause during the late 70s and early 80s. Before breaking up and Jimmy going off on his solo career. (I beleive you may have reacted to him with INXS DOING 'GOOD TIMES') Next Please do 'Saturday night' Also worth looking at 'You've got nothing I want', 'Flame trees', 'Cheep Wine', 'Standing on the Outside', 'Choir Girl', 'Forever Now', 'No Sense', 'My Baby' oh and if you loved Mossy's bluesy take at the start of this then check out their rendition of 'Georgia'.

Speaking of Australian or Australian/New Zealand 80s rock bands, you haven't played Crowded House (Don't Dream It's Over) in a bit. Some of their other songs to check out are World Where You Live, Something So Strong, Better Be Home Soon, Weather With You, It's Only Natural. Jimmy Barnes is the main vocalist but on some songs guitarist Ian Moss takes over on lead vocals. They can do slower songs and up-tempo songs. Jimmy Barnes is a rock god in Australia. Cold Chisel have been around for about 50 years. Some other great Australian bands to check out are Powderfinger, Silverchair, You am I, Reguirgitator, Spiderbait, Grinspoon,Wolfmother, Jebadiah, Killing Heidi, Eskimo Joe, The living End and Ths Screaming Jets. Just to name a few. These are mostly 90s and 00s bands so they mostly have that 90s rock sound. My fav Australian band is Powderfinger but they are no longer together. Hope you check out some more Aussie bands. You where talking about fav Aussie bands but did you know The Bee Gees started out in Australia. The Lyrics of Cold Chisel songs are about everyday working class people working hard and their lives
    -------
    ~Cheap Wine ~
Once I smoked a Danneman cigar
    I drove a foreign car
    Baby, that was years ago
    I left it all behind
I had a friend, I heard she died
On a needle, she was crucified
    Baby, that was years ago
    🎶 🎶
    -------
    Forever Now
Making his way down the stairs, he can't help but looking back
Thinks of the things that they shared, there'll be no more turning back
He thinks of the day they met
The words that she said of love he just can't forget

Many songs to check out next, I'm going to go with either "Forever Now" or "Flame Trees" or "Ita" (feel good song about how they all had a crush on the evening news anchor 😂. Both my wife and I have loved it for 40 years and when I just played this on UA-cam my 3 y.o. grandson looked at us in wonder as we both belted out the lyrics. Speaks to our youth, dead end jobs and wanting to run to the Northern Territory. Cold Chisel had great song writers Ian Moss and Jimmy Barnes fantastic singers and the most melodic songs you will ever hear from a so called Aussie Pub Rock band. They are having a reunion tour later this year and all us 60+ grandpa's and grandma's will be there enjoying every second.

My absolute favourite band. Jump aboard, strap yourself in. They are celebrating 50 years with a tour. I have tickets for October 2024. Just hoping Jimmy is going to be back in great shape after recent hip surgery. I also don’t want him to come back too soon and hurt himself again……
The first crooning was from Jimmy Barnes, their regular lead singer. He does share the role with Ian Moss, playing lead guitar 🎸. Ian aka Mossy was singing lead on this one. He does have a beautiful bluesy sound. It’s so smooth. The harmonies between Jimmy and Ian are fire 🔥. Jimmy has a great rock and soul sound, and generally sings the higher register parts. He can add all the grit and growl too.
The drums you loved were by Steve Prestwich who passed away of brain cancer on 16th January 2011. He was the heartbeat of the band. Since his passing an American, Charlie Drayton has stepped in his place. Charlie was married to Chrissy Amphlett, lead singer of The Divinyls. On Keys was Don Walker. He wrote the majority of songs, however all band members contributed, and this one was from Ian Moss. The bass player is Phil Small, and the guy on Harmonica was Dave Bright. This band is one of the most loved bands in Australia. They formed in 1973, played live in pubs (and for prison inmates) and did not release their first album until 1978. Jimmy left at the end of 1983 or beginning of 1984, so the band dissolved. They have formed for other concerts and have released other albums since then. They have a new single out called You’ve Got To Move.
For those who don’t know this band, if you like to view concerts, some of my favourites would be The Last Stand, Ringside, and 1982 Rockapalast concert in Germany in 1982. The last one has nearly 2 hours of unbelievable performances.
Because of their talent, I would recommend live versions of their song. Their 2003 Ringside concert Bow River performance will blow your mind. Even Dave on harmonica steps it up.
If you love CCR, Chisel’s version of Long as you see the light may be something you’d like to hear.
By the way, if you love harmonica, and band I know that features this instrument would be The Dingos. Broderick Smith RIP could play that instrument really well. Also a band called The Stars featured the harmonica by Andrew Durant RIP. Also Joe Camilleri of The Black Sorrows.

Hi Rob and Amber, Catherine here from South Australia. Bow River is considered an absolute classic here in Oz. The lead singer of Cold Chisel, we just call them Chisel, is usually our national treasure Jimmy Barnes but Ian Moss, the fabby lead guitarist, sings lead vox on this song. Another Chisel song that Ian sings is called Never Before also on their East album. It's my favourite of the songs he sings lead on. I had the honour (that's the Australian spelling) of singing backing vocals with my gals Deb and Lisa for Ian when he toured as a solo artist in the 90s. Fun times.... Btw Cold Chisel was formed in Adelaide, my city, in the 70s. A lot of the best known Aussie rock bands came from here including Little River Band and The Angels. I have a great photo of Ian, the gals and me but I don't think I can add it here? I haven't seen your vids before tonight but when I saw that ya'll were reacting to Billy Vera doing At This Moment I almost flipped my lid! I saw Billy and the Beaters live in LA at a place that looked like a diner, I think it was called "At My Place" and when he sang that, and the 12 piece band played to perfection, and the mix was insanely excellent even though the PA looked like nothing good could possibly come out of it, I found my new encore song. Man Billy can sing. It warms my heart to see you guys playing Australian music so from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

A legendary band that should have been huge worldwide, but it was tough for Aussie bands to get out of Australia at the time. Don Walker, the guy who was playing the harmonica, usually plays keys and is the main songwriter and a genius. The guy with the bluesy voice is Ian Moss, the lead guitarist but also an amazing vocalist, and the screamy guy is the iconic Jimmy Barnes, lead singer of Chisel.

Maybe start chronologically with the more poppy sound "Friday on My Mind" by the Easybeats, French TV 1967. And it would be great if you ever could react to the song "Evie", solo Stevie Wright from 1974. It's a story song consisting of 3 parts. In my opinion it is best listened to as a whole. That will be 11 minutes.

The band disbanded in 1983 and Jimmy has continued to this day with a very successful solo career. He has had since 1983, 12 #1 albums, his first 8 were consecutive!
