@@CoachCurtis Thanks for this. I fell into the WR MMR, though I've avoided the other toxic things. I sometimes get frustrated that I have a 62% WR on my main and my MMR still has me losing more LP than gaining. Instead, I could use this to my advantage to understand my macro better in exploiting enemy mistakes so that whenever the MMR finally rights itself (I'm sure it will at some point) I can continue to perform better than most of the people at my elo. I would complain that I carry my brains out, win, and keep losing LP in the long haul. Well, what if I used that carrying my brains out to increase game knowledge. At some point it will balance out, and I could keep my WR when I start finally facing people that are currently on my level, because then I'd be above the level I'm at now.
The process of reviewing my deaths helped a lot as well. I found most of my deaths come from trying to compensate for teammates mistakes, or following bad calls by myself or others, rather than pushing an advantage somewhere else.
Also, the comment on time expended supported something I long have said about League. Don't worry about it so much. I'm not going pro, even if I was good enough, I have better things to do with my time, so why worry? Very few people are in a different category than I am regarding that. If you're having fun, who cares if you climb? My common comment to people who flame others in the game: "Babe, nobody here is gettin' paid to do this, chill."

@McCool The Asian I agree. Trash talking in normals is completely pointless. People are learning new things or just playing for fun (auto piloting). I experienced this a ton when making a new account in another region. Some people there are clearly very new to the game and others are high rank smurfs and you see that garbage all the time. It's awful. I actually understand trash talking in ranked (just like in any sport) but in normals it's just so dumb...

The best advice for low rank players I ever got. Split push. Whenever you don't see 3 enemies on the mini map, go into a bush and wait. Do not recall or go to your team. When you see at least 3 enemies on the map again continue split pushing. Repeat. If you do happen to find yourself in a teamfight, after 1 - 2 enemies die, go to another lane and split push. Do not chase. Do not push down the same lane with your team. This works for bot, mid, top, or jungle. You will be aggressively pinged by your team. Don't worry about it. They're in Iron and you're on your way out.
If the above doesn't work, your rank is correct.

Commenting more than a year later since this video has been an absolute keystone in my current climb and I need to leave behind some appreciation. Updating this timeline occasionally. Thanks so much CC and other BBC'ers.
Aug 2021: Still beating myself up for not being able to climb in Silver 4 despite watching Coach Curtis content.
September 2021: Vex is released and because she looks like a champ CC would rate highly for self improvement in low elo AND I resonate with her depressing outlook on life, I decide to try to become a maestro with her. She was intuitive to learn and I quickly got comfortable with her gameplay but still was winning games mostly through Vex being an easy, overtuned champ.
Early 2022: Climbing is going smoothly, hitting Silver 3 with Vex. Scrolling through CC videos for no apparent reason and rewatch this vid. Search up the term "loser's game." Stuff starts clicking.
Early-mid 2022: Silver 2 with amazing winrate on Vex, maybe 68%. Playing around not dying and hitting skillshots and grouping and identifying how to win lane and how to approach teamfights. Hit 5000 on loldodgegame. Durability patch lands.
May 2022: Was (ab)using Kha'zix, long-time favorite champion from years ago, as off-role when climbing, and Vex just "doesn't feel like she used to be." Drops Vex completely knowing full well how risky the maneuver is. Dedicates self to the jungle main life style. Turns out, I love the role, but my skills are lacking and my LP is quickly falling as my one-trick Kha'zix hits a 42% winrate. Confidence taken out, compounded by a busy and low-performance university finals season.
June 2022: Finals are over, so I become a student of the assassin Kha'zix playstyle. Rewatching this video pushes me to understand that I am overcomplicating my Kha'zix gameplay: adapting runes, items, and decisions too much rather than settling on a somewhat constant knowledge base. Start studying Virkayu jungle guide videos again. Huge jungle improvement: realize how powerful and easy camera panning is. Early game awareness skyrockets. Slowly accumulating champion-specific knowledge, both on how to win as Kha'zix and how enemy jungle champions play.
July 2022: Lucky streaks carrying me to Silver 1 45 LP. Kha'zix performances are generally quite bad but the LP is rolling in. Likely due to new mindset on Kha'zix as wanting to create and support ally win conditions rather than just "getting fed." Trying to internalize the Nathan Mott Rek'sai gank theory. Becoming aggressive and spamming Draktharr full lethality despite the durability patch. Learning to teamfight with a squishy melee assassin. Focusing on execution rather than improvement to test if current knowledge will bring me to gold before the end of the season.
August 2022: Hit gold 4 0 LP with Kha'zix. Euphoria. Going for more soon.
January 2023: Euphoria becomes complacency becomes careless gameplay becomes bad habits becomes lose streaks becomes illogical, negative narratives. Yeah, I completed the LoL toxicity pipeline. My first 20 games in gold 4, I won maybe 3 games? And eventually it improved to a 40% winrate, but after consulting summoner school it was clear that I needed a fat break from league. Took the break, went back refreshed. Decided to set some LoL and loldodgegame goals for myself in December 2022. As of Jan 2023: Goal of at least 1 4000+ loldodgegame score daily, success. Find small champ pool for 2023, success, result of Kha'zix, Vex, Rumble for mid, jg. Play 80% of games ranked, not so much success... Now that I've hit the gold 4 milestone, I've found that I struggle to take solo queue seriously. Really sad stuff tbh. I've been reviewing more of my preseason games and my losses boil down to this: I die in the first 5 minutes of the game, I don't play patient, and I don't let myself get carried. All of those tie together as an expression of overconfidence, which aligns with both earning my idolized gold rank and taking new medication. If I could play 100 games in row instantly with my current skill, with demotion from Gold 4 allowed, I'd probably end up in Silver 3. Hopefully placements will wake me from this stupor. Happy new year to anyone reading this btw

This video tells me I’m on the right track. I have been playing for a year now, sitting at the bottom of Bronze. I have played nearly every champion under the sun, trying to find one that I like, that is doing well, and that I can climb with. Every time I stop finding success, I look at what goes wrong, mostly see a lot of champion-based mistakes, fail to fix it, and decide that I must not be able to play it and pick another. My most played champion not too long ago was only at 20 games. I have done this process over and over all while looking up ways to improve things outside my champion mastery. Nothing was making up the difference. I thought, “How can this be so important, it takes too long to learn to not suck at a champion I wanna still improve in the meantime while I learn” It got frustrating and I started to run out of champions...except the “easy” “simple” “low elo” ones. See, since the start, I avoided them. I didn’t think I’d get a return on them. Great, do this my whole League career until it can’t take me any further then learn a new one? What if I run into counters or it’s not what the team needs? Wouldn’t it be wiser to learn a champion good at all levels and have a bunch to switch to based on needs? I get countered all the time, counters are a problem even here. I made it to Silver recently and by recently I mean I was bottom Bronze really not too long ago. but it’s due to one big change. I only play Annie. I got to Silver, having an 89% win rate all because I was no longer shackled by hard to execute skills or risky playstyles. I just sat there, waited for players to make horrible mistakes, and killed them. Over over, game after game. I just waited for inevitable mistakes, bad choices, and the more I grabbed, the easier it was to find more. I couldn’t believe it. It’s because I, in one swoop, stopped making every mistake in this video. It really showed me how many losses were up to me. How my desire for efficiency and shortcuts were really just hubris. I refused to take it step by step. I really wish I could have done this past year over again. I can’t imagine where I’d be if all those games were funneled into one champion or a tiny pool.

I found that the best strategy of all for improving at League was actually to just stop playing League for about 6 months. It erased a lot of toxic mental blocks, gave a fresh perspective of the entire game, and I have an actual life instead of being mentally dead and staring at the computer screen every single day. I honestly think that is the best advice for bronze. Want to be better at League? Stop playing League and get your life together. Thank you so much for your advice. I have been playing Lux for the longest time and I used to suck with her but I played and played, then I got better at Qing and rooting. Just randomly predicting the person's movements. I haven't played ranked until the last two years and I have made so many mistakes but learning that the game can turn anytime can help as well. :) Thanks coach!

I love your videos and I enjoy watching them regardless of the state I'm in, rank-wise, just because of how focused they are on the mentality and the well-being of the player. I personally enjoy playing support the most, because I love making sure or at least trying to make sure every player in my team gets what they need to contribute towards the win, whether it be vision, roaming, or just playing lulu against assassins. The issues I encounter the most in-game are mostly auto-piloting and lack of self-awareness, when you touched on capitalizing and not dying, I could replay so many instances in which the players on both teams either lack the knowledge or the will to capitalize or initiate. More often than not, in lower divisions, players that aren't having a good game, would rather contribute towards a loss than a win, meaning that even if they see an opportunity to capitalize or initiate they'll ignore it, just to make the game as uncomfortable to others as it is to them. As a support player it led me to the conclusion that more than anything, your mental is the most important thing, because if you're mechanically good but you're having a bad game, and you would actively choose to ruin opportunities than give a hand to your teammates so they can do the work for you, you ain't going anywhere. You can't help people that don't want to help themselves, same as in real life issues, I guess.

I can confirm the experience from iron and bronze in season 9 to silver in season 10 and now I just got into gold, it was a very sastifying and enjoyable experience. The hardship was still there but it was fun.

Started about 1 year ago, finished S2020 in Bronze, sitting in Silver right now and this video showed me how much my mindset is clouded and poisoned already. Just the part of learning things intuitively and focusing on learning with a very small pool and having fun doing it... it doesn't really exist anymore for me. I enjoy playing a lot of champs and I can't really get myself to go into review (usually just say I can't do better, I'm low elo for a reason after a loss). I do blame game balance, afks and a lane that gave a lot of kills over for losses in my head as well. I already got myself ranked anxiety, I rarely want to touch ranked due to toxicity, pressure to perform well (due to my own expectations, for the teams mental sake and my friends being higher ranked than I am), as well as the fear of having a 45+min game that I throw with a single mistake. I don't want to stop playing but I have no idea how to fix my mindset on this either... so I probably do what I do now and play Normals, ARAM and Rotating Modes all the time lol

  • @zackk8056

4 minutes in I think sums the decision up well for me. "How serious to do you take the game?" Well it's a game at the end of the day so not at all in comparison to life but I think in the moment competitive nature can make you feel like for a session maybe gaining some ELO is important but overall day to day the practice and drive it takes is where most lack or have more important real world shit to do. Just my 2c and I agree those that take it serious enough to get coaching/really work on a small champ pool will definitely be more likely to see end results. Great way to break it down and thanks much for the video.
Also, the tool analogy makes me think of Bruce Lee's quote "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."

Really great video. Regarding 17:52, this reminds me of a friend of mine. His micro is really not good, he has no idea about the runes since the rework (5?) years ago and for example sometimes takes stuff like Conqueror on Zyra Support. However, he knows when to fight and when not. Just this skill alone allowed him to climb to Diamond on EUW once, he is still high Platinum every season without even tryharding.
And yet here we are, Silver and Bronze players theorycrafting about optimal runes and items in a specific matchup. Thing is: If the enemy Yasuo dashes into your turret regularly, it doesn't matter if you take cookies or boots mastery on Lux. And if you take Comet or Aery also won't matter if you miss every skillshot.

  • @pooplord6688
    @pooplord6688 3 роки тому

Great video! There are two things that are related to all of this that I wish you had touched on more specifically. One is the mental game of somebody who IS on track to rank up to gold but who gets hugely frustrated after losses whether they personally played well or not because they're not seeing the big picture and understanding that losses and losing streaks are inevitable. Whether you subscribe to 30/30/40 or some variant of this or not, I feel this is a huge factor for many "hardstuck" players who can't let losses go. The second thing is being able to relax and playing for the purposes of improvement rather than the sake of reaching gold specifically. A buddy of mine was in promos for gold three times, and basically psyched himself out after some tough losses, started thinking he needed to change his champion even though he didn't and would surely be back in promos in no time if he just got back on the horse. At this point it became all about reaching gold for him and he wasn't even enjoying himself, talking about how he was going to uninstall the game the second he reached gold. He never did reach gold, but he did eventually rage quit and uninstall the game. TL;DR: look at how many games Wayne Gretzky or Michael Jordan had to LOSE over the course of their careers. Climbing will mean suffering many, many, many losses and people need to learn how to be okay with these.

I usually get to gold quite easily every season, this season has gone way slower, mostly because I got bored of my champ pool. Now I found Bard, lost a lot at first, but now i'm almost back to gold again :D Just enjoying the game while reviewing why i died and watching a few of my own vods helped, and watching some high elo bard players.
It's sooo true that you don't have to force much in this elo! I have had a lot of successfull ganks because the laners get greedy and they never expect the bard coming for some reason. Or they try to dive my adc when i'm simply next to a wall out of vision, so we often turn it around. Great tips!

It's kind of frustrating to watch this because I really am trying to do all the things you emphasized, especially avoiding dying when it really is avoidable, but it seems like it doesn't do much good when everyone else on my team is playing so irresponsibly, usually looking for some easy way to cheese their way to victory and immediately becoming toxic and wanting to surrender if things aren't going their way after the first 5 minutes. Then I get criticized by higher level players for not doing enough of the things you actually said to avoid like lots of roaming or aggressive flash plays. I definitely agree with your advice about how the game needs to be played at that level, I just wish it weren't so totally contrary to what most people believe, usually something like "just be good enough to style on everyone with big, aggressive plays since the opposition should be weak".

Mainly because I just got fed asf every game playing mindlessly. Since jungle was my secondary role and beside being Kata otp I played like 10 junglers to mastery 7 so I decided to fully commit to jungle now. I play Kindred only now and still stuck in silver but I'm looking forward to actually improve now.

It is ironic that I quit league for good after watching your videos. At that time I was blinded by the idea that getting good at league was only possible by "playing a ton of games rather than "reflecting, thinking and reviewing" it. After seeing your content and analysis on how hard this game was I realised it was not worth my effort to get good at this game.
Yet, I think you do not only give league advice but advice itself. Not a league success formula but a formula for success in anything. Keep up the good work man. I always love to hear and see how you cathegorize this grand scheme of things and explain them. It's expanding my perspective.

About 7 months ago I watched this video and another video. In the other video Coach Curtis speaks on how the highest you will realistically get is a 70% wr, and how I forget the wording but it was something along the lines of 30% of games are auto losses, 30% of games are auto wins and 40% can go either way depending how well you play.
That video helping with the toxic mindset I had, along with this video helped me A TON. When I watched these videos I was B4 if I remember correctly. I stuck to Syndra as my champion, and just worked on not dying, watching for enemies mistakes, and I got rid of the mindset that my teammates were the reason I was losing games.
I recommend taking Coach Curtis’ videos seriously as they are very useful for helping to keep your mental in check. I’m now g4, half way to g3. I hit a rut the past couple months or so stuck at g4, but watching his new video with the player her climbed from g1 to I believe he is masters now is helping me again. I realized I was getting so focused on the LP gain/loss, and worried about gaining 13 losing 20 type stuff. Once I stopped with that mindset, refixed my mental and kept in mind that solo queue is “chaos” I noticed I started improving again.
Pay attention to the videos, and take what he says seriously. Taking a moment to breathe and practice what he basically preaches will making improving come easier as well as make the game a heck of a lot more fun.
That’s my two bits, road to plat here I come. Good luck to the rest of y’all trying to climb. ^~^

Oh, and side note. Something I 100% agree with is to play what you have fun playing. Everyone has to start somewhere on a champion. I recently started learning azir for fun, and I’m not great at him yet I can finally start going in games and come out with positive kda on him. Choose a couple champs you love playing and just get the champion mastery. If you’re worried about just winning, and spend a couple hundred hours playing a champ pool you find boring, then you’ll eventually find league boring and start questioning why you’re bothering to play the game. - This is probably the single biggest piece of advice that I was able to take away

I know that this video is pretty old, but your advice has helped a lot recently. I've spent a couple of seasons ~Bronze 4, and after just sticking to only Annie mid, with 1 rune page, I have seen immediate results. Instead of trying to make fancy plays, just staying back, doing damage, and staying alive has given a 7 win streak in ranked already. The loser's game mentality really does help (even though the name sounds a bit demeaning).

"enjoy the innocence you have. It won't last." BASED.
I'd also give my everything to turn back time back to season 3, when I finally hit lvl 30, and started rankeds. I've been placed silver 2, and I made my way to gold, every victory was a shot of adrenaline, every game was a new thing learnt, and when I finally hit gold, at the end of the season, it was such a pleasure, a taste of goal reach. I still remember the matchup of my last promo game, I was playing malzahar against Zed, with a J4 with me, we clutched the game together with him Ring their whole team and me W on the cataclysm area (back then, malz W was his ult, without the supress.) This memory is a trasure in a box, which is buried for a long time now.
Now I'm getting my diamond every season just for the record, by autopiloting every single game because I have nothing to take from them. I don't have the motivation and the passion to push further, I'm getting old... This innoncence is long gone. And to be fair, the game was absolutely awful back then, its so much better now. Like pokemon generations. So please, enjoy your learning, for god sake, because as Curtis said, it wont last. And you'll miss it sooner than you think.
