This is PURE singing! Yall do realize he does not have on an ear piece at all. He is singing with all of the noise of the entire building that we cant hear. This performance was golden, crisp and clean.

Come on Velvet teddy bear, it's good seeing him back on stage. His voice is still AMAZING!!! He doesn't look happy, that glimmer is not in his eyes anymore. I'm use to him being playful and grooving he's not himself in this performance. He might have been sick, use to him more groomed. He didn't try hitting those high notes, but kept the true essence of Luther's music. Outside of Usher, nobody makes Luther sound good like Reuben. I LOVE his Al Green version of For The Good Times....lol yep TRUE FAN!!!

honestly this is still incredible. everybody in the comments are acting as if they are performers or even audio engineers. his voice is amazing and engineering wise, the set up isnt the most dynamic. and plus, this is ruben studdard, not luther. both two favorites.
He sounds good. I think what people are picking up on is that he's lost a lot of weight and his voice sort of thinned out and he could be sick too. I have a brother who sings in the range of Luther and I've seen him have outstanding performances and not so outstanding but the not so good performances is when the air in the space is really dry or when he is hoarse, got a cold or laryngitis. Singers are human and get sick people! Don't always expect outstanding performances every time they hit the stage.

I was trying to put my finger on it, I knew his name since I was a kid but his voice sounded different and I felt like he was missing the flavour he can still sing but there was no rich textures. You said it perfectly

I just saw him in concert a few weeks ago singing all of Luther’s songs and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.... from his appearance to stage presence to his vocals. It was hands down one of my favorite concerts!!! However, during this performance, he looks and sounds as if he doesn’t feel well ... bless his heart

I absolutely have always truly loved Luther. His voice just magical!!! Ruben stole my heart the very first time I heard him sing. Some voices are just gifts from God and Luther is set apart. Ruben is absolutely the "velvet teddy bear". He does Luther proud!! Saw him last Christmas and not only did he sound fantastic, he looked amazing!! Lost a lot of weight which I'm sure keeps his sound so beautiful. You did that Ruben!! Yes you did!!

I see the comments. As a musician/singer (80% more musician), I can tell you one thing. You never know what's going on with a person. My take from this is Reuben sounds like he has a cold because his voice doesnt sound as full as normal. With that being said, he still sounds himself. I know when summertime hits, my voice is not the same as in.the fall/winter. My allergies are real bad. I sound very nasally and out of breathe. It sounds like that with Reuben, but black folks always have something to say about each other. The bruthas sounds good as hell. Hit all the notes and on key. Just had a different tone this time around, which could be about anything

I've seen Ruben several times and the last time he was doing Luther songs. This performance was not his best. He didn't look 100%. I'm still a fan though

I love Ruben. He has a great voice, but his tone has changed ever so slightly, and he's not really reminiscent of Luther any more. He was actually giving me Marvin Gaye vibes throughout this tribute. If BET ever tributes Marvin (which they should), they should give Ruben a call.

For all of those confused why his voice may not sound the same there are many possibilities. As you age your voice without constant practicing exercise just like muscles can get fatigue also with the amount of weight he has lost his larynx and lung capacity is likely completely different. I know this myself because as a singer when I gained weight while lifting heavy years ago my voice changed. He hasn’t lost it he just needs to refine his voice in his current state. GOD bless you brotha Rueben.

Folks on this thread are saying that Ruben sounds different here. I also thought the same thing. Then I realized what it could be. His voice is more smooth, lighter, not as husky as it used to be and as people are more used to hear him sounding. Should he have had this "lighter" voice since inception, then we would, to me, agree that he did a fine job here and sounded great.
I have heard Rubin sing Luther before and this performance didn't have the power it did before. It was just okay, he has done better.
You're absolutely right... I'm a singer myself and I can tell the change in his voice is not as strong... He might be going through some kind of depression he lost his brother, fail marriage things like that can affect you as well as your voice. You don't be much into it as you used to. But with prayer his voice can come back again it's still there he has a gift when you have that it never really goes away...
