It’s November 14, 2024 and I’m listening to Luther perform at the 19th Annual NAACP Image Awards. How are old is this and how many times have I listened to this? He is simply dynamic. ❤
"I had the incredible fortune of attending Luther's concert not once, but twice. The first time, I was just 15 years old, and he graced Beaumont, TX, with his presence at our civic center. His vocal prowess astounded me and left a mark on my memory. Luther's talent is truly incomparable; there's simply no one else like him. It was a privilege to witness both 'big Luther' and 'little Luther' in action. His performances were nothing short of legendary, each one leaving me in awe."
My mom always went to his concerts when he came here to Michigan. Him, sade, stephanie and a few others i wish i could have gone but i was too young in the 80's.
I am blessed to have seen him 4 times in Chicago Illinois,he was with peabo Bryson and the Jones girls my sister Sandra and I were in the front roll New Year's Eve cold night we got champagne 🍾🍾🍾🍾

@ed k, imagine how Dionne Warwick felt sitting there listening to Luther singing this difficult song that *only* she had done justice to until Luther. You could see it on her face that she was so proud of him.

Amazing. He was locked in. The audience was locked in. Everybody there was aware of how special the moment was and everyone gave themselves to the moment. You felt the synergy between the performer and audience. It was one man singing, but you felt the communal effort behind it. It was spiritual. Such an elevated level of performance art. This is the Book of Luther in the Bible of Performance.

Hearing this in 2022 , amazing pitch, voice, a true performer with class! Incredible, Absolutely one of the greatest live performances ever recorded in my opinion .. gone but not at all forgotten .we are all better for hearing this. wow! RIP Mr Vandross
This man was one of the greatest live performers who ever lived. In my opinion, he's one of very few performers who could flawlessly reproduce the sound quality of his studio-recorded vocals, while still adding ad-libs and flourishes sung in perfect key and pitch during his live performances, to make them memorable and special, but also as enjoyable as the album version.
Actually it is correct bc his comment was 7 months ago and this performance was how many years ago? So it was indeed correct. Also even tho he did sing the song he surely was saaaangin that thang! Have a good day!

Love how he sings to Dionne Warwick here…such a tribute and she is amazed. She recorded this song first and he covered it in tribute to her as a fan. ❤️❤️❤️💗💗💗🥰🥰🥰
@@davidesmeyer9825 You probably meant to say Luther sung the song as his legacy song, but he did not write it. Actually, Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song. If you go back in history, Dionne Warwick was one of Bacharach's favorite singers and he wrote many songs for her to sing, one iconic song being "Walk On By" among many others. To be honest, I never knew Burt wrote this song but I happen to be watching a PBS special on his history of song writing and "A House Is Not A Home" was included in his anthology of songs. Here is the story from Wakipaedia: "A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 ballad written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1964 film of the same name, starring Shelley Winters and Robert Taylor. The song was recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick at Bell Sound Studios in New York City, and was a modest hit in the United States for the singer, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". Another version of the song, by Brook Benton, which was the version that appeared in the film, was released at nearly the same time. It debuted two weeks earlier on the Billboard Hot 100. Benton's version split airplay with Warwick's, and ultimately peaked at #75. Warwick was the first to sing it which is why she was so filled with joy with Luther's version. Nobody could have done it better; he made the song "iconic".
I opened for Luther at the 17,500 seat Rosemount Horizon in Chicago. Sinbad had to shoot a television project and Luther approved me to take his place for 3 cities - in particular that New Year’s Eve 1989 in Chi-Town. Anita Baker was on that tour as well. He taught me so much about playing to larger crowds, was wonderful and generous to my mother, providing a limo and accommodations at the Ritz-Carlton. And every single show he was on THIS level. I cry every time I watch this missing those bygone days that I got to share that level of success with Mommy and it was this gentleman that made it all happen.
Not at all. You gotta be joking right. Justin Bieber is the man that should give you chills, this guy vandross he's average at best, he needed to learn to just sing the song not throw his words all over the place
That’s professional by every sense of the word. Range, pitch, tempo is all precise. Dude was a legend and taken far too soon. Cannot think of any recent vocalists that can come close to this.
Who's still in love with this song? Its 2024, this song brings me to the moon :) No pyrotechnics, no light show, no dancers. Just raw, beautiful talent from our Creator. He had the audience enthralled, and gave me chills. No one better. Ever.
The main difference with vocalists then and now is not the notes they can hit. It's the RICHNESS, FULLNESS and RESONANCE of the voices of old, due to proper development of the chest voice (which singers today do not fully develop anymore). Just listen to the QUALITY of this man's tone. It's full, rich and resonant throughout his singing range. This is real singing, folks. LEGENDARY VOICE.
He was better than most of the vocalists back then, too. It's synonymous to watching Jordan, LeBron, Peyton Manning, or Serena Williams dominating in their respective sports. They were the elite of the elite during their times.
@@Freewarrior2 I agree but I feel like he’s the greatest of all time. I’ll admit, I’m only in my late 30s so I’m hardly qualified to make such a statement but to me, Luther topped the Teddy P’s and Marvin Gayes of the world. Thoughts?
This whole video is iconic, from the intro by Denzel to the looks of awe from iconic vocalists like Anita Baker and Dionne Warwick, Janet Jackson being smitten -- and finally, the performance itself, the likes of which has never been seen before or since.
... DO NOT overlook that's also the GREAT!! Debbie Allen w/Denzel! Nothing but greatness in this clip! The NAACP has been legendary & consistent in featuring accomplished Black individuals. Paul Winfield & other Black industry luminaries -- all captivated by Luther!
He sung, not lip synched, he SANG. I remember the first time I heard this and so many other songs of his. Had the honor of seeing Luther live multiple times. He gave us so much amazing music for many lifetimes. There will never be another...
there are so many more; approaching 50 and im like damn. Every one can sang, but I can crow a little but I dont earn from it. I learn; you here me. I learn.

The hell with Rock an Roll Hall of Fame, Luther Vandross is way above them and so is James Brown Aretha Frankin and Whitney Houston. Legends don't need handouts.
It’s 2022 and Luther still isn’t in the Rock Hall with Michael Marvin and Sam Cooke. He’s been eligible since 2009. Madonna got in first ballot that year. He’s never been nominated
Why should we place all these great singers into this nonsense when they are dead? Why can't we recognise their giftings and talents whilst alive? Furthermore, I would not be at all surprised if Luther's family have to pay for the priviledge! Just stop....

My husband played this song everyday while we were on the phone. I lived in Arkansas and he lived in Illinois at the time. We talked everyday for hours. And on the weekends we would listen to song and drink with each others on the phone. We are together now it’s been 24 years now still loving each other. This is a beautiful song.

The admiration on Dionne”s face says it all. Pure perfection ❤
As being his mentor she was so proud of him in this big moment❤
Love how he sings to Dionne Warwick here…such a tribute and she is amazed. She recorded this song first and he covered it in tribute to her as a fan. ❤️❤️❤️💗💗💗🥰🥰🥰
Luther Vandross was one of a kind! Oh how I love seeing Dionne's face! Pure joy!
He started as her backup singer
He did not sing this first Luther wrote that song as his Legacy song where did you get that propaganda from quit it and quit it now
@@davidesmeyer9825 You probably meant to say Luther sung the song as his legacy song, but he did not write it.
Sorry babygirl but this song was recorded by a white woman in the sixties
❤❤❤❤ Salute
How fantastic. What a great memory to have.
I was there. Something I will never forget!
Greatest singers of All-Times:
Whitney Houston
Luther Vandross
BEAUTIFUL
Luther is probably the best male singer of all time...swoon. He is so missed.
Yes he is so miss R I P
❤😅
My Mom's favorite artist...R.I.P. Mommy and Luther
Loved him always! He gives me chills. Can’t stop listening to his songs over & over! Does anyone else feel the same way?
He's my favorite male R&B singer. There will never be another artist like him.
Forever he’s the best
Yes❤
Not at all. You gotta be joking right. Justin Bieber is the man that should give you chills, this guy vandross he's average at best, he needed to learn to just sing the song not throw his words all over the place
He was the best and he still the best in my heart rest in peace the LEGEND
That’s professional by every sense of the word. Range, pitch, tempo is all precise.
Dude was a legend and taken far too soon.
Cannot think of any recent vocalists that can come close to this.
57 year old man , I cried too. Best live performances EVER !!! I Missed our great black men with great talent..Teddy Pendergrass can do it live too.
Brothas in this generation was everything 💯😍😍
67 here, still enjoy his music. STILL IN LOVE
Luther's generation was the last
Who's still in love with this song? Its 2024, this song brings me to the moon :)
No pyrotechnics, no light show, no dancers.
Thank you! I’ve been saying this for years! And don’t even get me started on that vibrato
@@kwicksand12 I hear you!!! 🙏🙏🙏
It depends on the person. Now, people get famous for song writing, and they happen to have a voice secondary. That's the difference.
Amen
Well, this was a tribute to Dionne. She recorded it in 1964.
Dionne recorded this in 1966.
Right ❤😂🎉😅😊
Still one of the greatest vocal performances of all time!
Agree. One of the greatest live performances by an Artist.
@@polyprinz one of the greastest
looks like he may have made Janet a little wet in her special little hairy hole...
Still listening 2024 I 'm sixty five, and still he has the voice of all time.
Yazzzzz
Damn…Luther made them feel every note of that song. Pure Gold 🔥
The best ever! The love Dionne has for Luther by her face and appreciation! Two legends!
Yup, THAT part! I remember even seeing this 'appreciation' as a kid.
Didn’t he sing backup for her at one time? I could be wrong
He sung, not lip synched, he SANG. I remember the first time I heard this and so many other songs of his. Had the honor of seeing Luther live multiple times. He gave us so much amazing music for many lifetimes.
There will never be another...
You don't see that very often anymore...
Luther never lip synched
there are so many more; approaching 50 and im like damn. Every one can sang, but I can crow a little but I dont earn from it. I learn; you here me. I learn.
Fascinating singer
LET ME BE CLEAR, AS PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA WOULD SAY: THERE IS ONLY ONE LUTHER VANDROSS!
Just pure perfection. Luther was indeed that velvet voice of a lifetime. No one then or since can rival his vocal performances RIP.
Velvet voice, a beautiful looking man...never a bad word after he has gone RIP
The most perfect singer
LEGEND!!!!!!!!;
Mercy!!
This performance was dangerous!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Man....they don't make music like this anymore. So glad I grew up during this era
I feel Good I'm 17 Now Turn it around I'm 71 So Blessed to still be around to hear dat Beautiful Song again
I love the way Dionne Warwick is looking and mesmerized by Luther. This is one of my favorite songs
Mrs.Warwick original made this song, Luther is doing a remake of this song, this why they keep showing Mrs.Warwick.
Everyone is drawn in when he sings.. Legendary
I’m Sorry young people. This was real music. This was a real singer. Please get educated
They already know.... No apologies necessary!
100% agree. I miss this music so much.
🙏🙏Blessings forever GOD loves y'all too forever tell everyone you know and don't know. Jesus loves y'all too forever. Teach everyone how to see and enjoy their blessings too forever❤
I remind my “grown” kids ALL the time with NO apologies!!!!!
Luther has and will always be my favorite male singer of all time
I always come back to see this performance. There will never be another Luther 😢❤
You are Absolutely RIGHT ‼️‼️
Everytime I miss my mom I come back to this. She loved Luther. I cry everytime. Listening to his albums brings so many great memories.
Vocally top 5 easily, that range is crazy. Rest easy Mr. Vandross.
And not 5th, 4th, 3rd or 2nd.
Can we please get this man inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for next year please he deserve it straight up Luther Vandross deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
The hell with Rock an Roll Hall of Fame, Luther Vandross is way above them and so is James Brown Aretha Frankin and Whitney Houston. Legends don't need handouts.
@@marquewallace solid. But for the sake of his family and legacy, it would be great! Coming soon.
It’s 2022 and Luther still isn’t in the Rock Hall with Michael Marvin and Sam Cooke. He’s been eligible since 2009. Madonna got in first ballot that year. He’s never been nominated
@@marquewallace Genius all of them are in the Rock Hall that listed. It fing matters
Why should we place all these great singers into this nonsense when they are dead? Why can't we recognise their giftings and talents whilst alive? Furthermore, I would not be at all surprised if Luther's family have to pay for the priviledge! Just stop....
This remains the greatest live performance ever witnessed on television, RIP Luther.
💕💯Who's still listening to this amazing performance & beautiful song in 2024 Luther vandross Still one of the greatest performances of all time the lady in the back ground is the legendary Dionne Warwick who also sang this song both were very close friends LEGENDS NEVER DIE.💕
When R&B still had Soul....
Yeah... (Lonnnnnnnnnnnnng sigh...)
Amen
Facts💯
So true.
….right, not so much today….
When I tell you Luther's voice was one of a kind I mean it. Such amazing pitch, range , control, tone. Timeless!! The GOAT
Probably one of the best sung performances of any ballad, by anyone, ever. A beautiful song. RIP Luther Vandross and Burt Bacharach. Their gifts enriched the world.
Well said, Tresa. I agree 100%
When STARS are looking at one of their peers perform in pure awe, you know you’re magnificently good man!
Luther was one of a kind! Every note was hit beautifully! We were blessed to hear this man sing! It’s 2023 and this song still brings me chills!
Yes I have chills and tears. Thinking about when I saw him in concert.
I love soul music... no matter what...
I first his voice in 1990 & I’m still loving his voice 2day as I did back then.
No one is perfect, but this performance was. I will give it a 100.
No,It’s a 120....

Luther's voice and performance was indeed perfect though. I rate him 1000❤.
He was amazing
I'm 73yrs old, and I've heard some of the best. He is one of the best❤
Damn, this even sounds better than the original recording on vinyl/CD/MP3/DVD. This was absolutely impeccable! Irrepressibly flawless, exquisite vocal masterpiece! ❤🎙 🎶
I'm a 73 year old whhite woman who has always enjoyed Luthers talent. I'm so sad that he's gone.
Hello 👋Mary, how are you doing? Hope you are fine.
Hi Mary sending best wishes to you ❤
Being a white woman means what exactly?
@@derryckanthonyevery one can appreciate talent, don’t be a sick..
I was blessed to see Luther Vandross in concert twice. The first time I only watched his mouth to be sure he was singing, he sounds just like the original recording. The second concert was all eyes and ears. One of the greatest voices, vocal techniques, range just GIFTED, the greatest vocalist of all times. Luther Vandross rest in peace 💕
I saw him twice also I fell even more in love with him
There's no such thing as the greatest singer. There are singers who, from their first note, leave a lasting indelible memory in the core of your soul.. Mr Vandross. You do that every time..
I've said this rarely, but I don't believe anyone can learn to sing with such 'feel'...I believe he was simply born with the gift!
Thanks for such wonderful vocal ability.
Luther has such purity in his voice…makes me want to cry each time….i grew up in this era,and boy was music so good back then …..glad I was there 🥰🥰
No other singer could finish a song like that..He was just **AWESOME** R.I.P. LUTHER**
Gone was waaaaay too soon.
This is pure entertainment. The crowd is mesmerised and in the moment. Smiles all around. We need more of this 😊
