I watched them fall in love with boyfriends listening to Luther. And during each engagement party and eventual wedding, Luther was always there. When he passed away, I remember saying “ we’ll miss you uncle Luther “❤
You sound ridiculous. Luther was gay and unable to live his truth because of people like you who focus on external appearances over inner turmoil, generational trauma and forms of bigotry like homophobia that kept Luther from being able to live his truth.
The problem with being famous for a talent is that people will become obsessed with who you are dating and if you don't want to share that (which you don't have to) folks will call you "secretive" and "very private". The culture of needing to know everything about celebrities personal life is almost psychopathic in my opinion. I'm glad Luther kept his love life private.
You're not wrong, but humans are curious creatures. We seek knowledge to superficially gain understanding and help fill a narrative or perception of who we think that person is. I agree it's psychotic, especially with social media, the big brother of all brothers.
But, it's pretty obvious that if Luther was in a relationship that the general public could understand or approve of - (ie. with a woman) then he probably would have shared that. There are still gay and lesbian singers and actors today, particularly black artists, that hide their partners for fear of damaging their careers. The culture hasn't changed as much as we like to assume.
@lamoneal Maybe that was the reason, but even heterosexual relationships are heavily scrutinized and under a microscope. My point is that famous people deserve privacy just like everyone else. Their talents should be the focus, not who they're sleeping with.
I hope you all stop fooling yourself Luther did not come out because he didn't want to bring Shane to his mama he was not thinking about what people said and he didn't go as far as he could have because of his attitude he was a real drama queen😮😢
Luther Vandross was a vivid example of "a clown's life" and "the show most go on". In "A Clown's Life", it is said that the clown shows up to do his performance, the clown makes everyone laugh and even get involved in some funny games. When the performance is over, the clown leaves a group of happy and satisfied people to go deal with his personal problems, skeletons in the closet and some personal demons and in many cases the clown won't even give a sincere, happy smile when is out of the costume and makeup. In "The Show Must Go On", no matter what the performer is going through, no matter what bad news the performer receives, before or during the show ... the performer will go on stage and give the fans the best performance, without the fans noticing any change of character. Luther Vandross would give his best in every presentation, but no one knew his feelings and struggles.
I wish he knew just how much the world needed his voice, his heart, his kindness, his dedication…him!!!! The black community especially owes Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, and Frankie Beverly & Maze a tribute at all of our special occasions. Rest in Peace, Songbird! You don’t have to “Wait for Love” anymore.🙏🏾🤴🏿👑🏆🌟🖤✍🏽🎤🎶🎬
“I don’t care about his personal life, I love his music” isn’t the loving compliment you think it is. You SHOULD care, maybe if someone cared he would have been able to express his feelings and be heard by someone. We should care and we shouldn’t shame people for being who they are!!!
Thank you for saying this I’m so tired of seeing this passive aggressive comment. His personal life was a part of his life, and because of it he was deeply lonely and dejected. It’s a shame for anyone to ever feel that way and it deserves to be acknowledged.

Luther was born 20 years too early. It’s a shame he never found romantic love due to homophobia both internalised and societal. The greatest male vocalist! He should have won 20 Grammy awards..
He actually did and it was a long term relationship. He had to keep it under wraps in order to become wealthy. His lover would go to the hospital to visit with Luther everyday. I just wish he could have been open about it because I'm sure that would have made him happy.
@@scottinamcqueen6895 that’s what I had always heard and read. That’s why people who knew him waited until his mother had passed away to speak on his sexuality.
Gays are gonna gay if they choose to live that way. He tried it but was rejected cause he wasn't wanted, not because being gay was even more taboo back then.
I was on my way to Detroit for a family reunion and we listened to Luther CDs all the way there from Rochester NY. When we hit Detroit my sister said turn on the radio we in Motown. We turned on the radio and they said Luther had passed away. I still remember the look that passed between me and my sister. It was a look of incredulous disbelief and profound sadness. Homophobia in the black community is destroying lives and needs to stop. Nothing means anything if you don't have someone to love and love you in return. You can't be mad at anyone for not embracing any vice/sin. Whether this, drugs, being a prostitute/porn star, drunkeness etc anything. Heck people even hide smoking cigarettes, if they are moral. It's proper to be ashamed of anything that we aren't supposed to be doing.

5 minutes in and all of his inspirations were females like many of us gay men. Wish it would have been a time where he could’ve loved and accepted himself for who he was. The world would have still loved you and your heavenly voice 💜
🤔 *I disagree.* The world would NOT have loved him, because it was a totally different world back then. All of this public fluidity, pronouns, sexual preferences, gender choosing, and alphabet categories did not exist in those days, especially in the Black community. There were plenty of gay people in the industry, but they were all closeted on purpose. Did you see what happened to Ellen D. when she forced her way out? It wasn’t pretty. Luther knew what he was doing. His main audience are Black women, but they hate to find out about Black men being gay. They never would’ve supported songs that they knew were towards men. 🤷🏾♂️
@MrKellyELA All of the things you described existed back then it just wasn't in the mainstream. Everyone has pronouns he/she etc are pronouns. So I'm not being obtuse yes trans people exist too and they were told to be quiet about it even if they got hormones and surgery. The LGBT isn't a new acronym and nor are any of the letters. My grandfather himself told who is strate talked to me about how gay people would be on Christopher street and in the castro. The issue is people had to hide it even if people knew (famous or not) Hence gay clubs, gatherings and neighborhoods. It was about making strate people feel comfortable, presenting strate and not getting yo ass beat. I don't disagree he would of been shunned but it was an unspoken about things not a new thing by any stretch of the imagination.
@MrKellyELA please stop with the "all this gay stuff is new" narrative. It's NOT. We were FORCED INTO HIDING or faced with literal death and beatings. None of this is new, we're sick of catering to our murderers

Wow! It is nice to hear younger generation appreciating Luther.
I didn’t realize that Luther had such an extensive songwriting résumé! 🤯
Same!
Saaaaame!!!
Yes. I think he wrote Get It Right for Aretha.
He did but many of his songs were originally written by Burt bacarach
Luther was an emotional eater which would explain his weight struggle. I wish he would have gotten professional health.
Yes, I know. He's also the man who invented the Luther Burger 🍔 😋
You sound ridiculous. Luther was gay and unable to live his truth because of people like you who focus on external appearances over inner turmoil, generational trauma and forms of bigotry like homophobia that kept Luther from being able to live his truth.
Professional HELP.

@@Keasha274lmao so you just going to spread that rumor as if you know what you talking about ? 😂
*I agree. Whatever I don't know about any famous person is **_for them to share, otherwise, it ain't my business!_*
Sadly true
@lamoneal Maybe that was the reason, but even heterosexual relationships are heavily scrutinized and under a microscope. My point is that famous people deserve privacy just like everyone else. Their talents should be the focus, not who they're sleeping with.
That's why he sounded like that. He was singing for something he longed for.
I loved Luther Vandross, I love the fact that he used his real name and not a stage name. I'm sorry he hid his life , just to give us music. 😢
Most singers use there real name though
@kirbykipling9515or he would have lost his whole career because people were closed minded
I hope you all stop fooling yourself Luther did not come out because he didn't want to bring Shane to his mama he was not thinking about what people said and he didn't go as far as he could have because of his attitude he was a real drama queen😮😢
@@scottinamcqueen6895 256 people agree with me .
@@scottinamcqueen6895there is no shame in being gay. And it is thinking like that that kept him from living his truth.
Bullseye. Very true.
So sad.

Loneliness is such a sad thing.
He was so handsome. And so so talented, may he rest in peace 🕊️💔🥺
Luther was and is the best balladeer singer ever and I will always love him 💔
He had a beautiful, soul touching talent, it makes me sad that he never found a love of his own....😢
Luther’s voice makes me cry…his voice truly does affect people. There’s so much emotion in it 🥲🤍
“I don’t care about his personal life, I love his music” isn’t the loving compliment you think it is.
Luther Vandross and Phyllis Hyman shared the same loneliness in life
true 😢
And me, but I keep trying and turning to God. I use my music to help me cope with rejection, loss, grief, and life in general.

One of THE greatest vocalists of all time… period
Luther was born 20 years too early. It’s a shame he never found romantic love due to homophobia both internalised and societal. The greatest male vocalist! He should have won 20 Grammy awards..
He actually did and it was a long term relationship. He had to keep it under wraps in order to become wealthy. His lover would go to the hospital to visit with Luther everyday. I just wish he could have been open about it because I'm sure that would have made him happy.
He didn't want to make his mother unhappy.😢😮 He did not care about what people thought😂😂😂
He should have been with a woman like GOD made it.He probably would have kids.
600,000 in the 70's Sheeeeesh!
took my breath away. He was straight ballin lol
💯😮💨🔥 Facts!! My exact thoughts. That was 2.5 million dollars back in the day. Just from singing back up, writing songs & jingles. 🎶
It's a shame because he doesn't have an estate for his inheritance to go to. 😔
I still go back to that moment whenever I hear a Luther song. I miss him still.
Hudson Ave baby lol
Homophobia in the black community is destroying lives and needs to stop. Nothing means anything if you don't have someone to love and love you in return. We must all work together to stop this hatred. It starts with you and me. Luther deserved better for everything he gave us. Rest in love brother. 😞
It was the black community it was probably the record label
And why do you think the label told him not to come out because its primary audience wouldn't have been okay with it at the time which was primarily black listeners of R&B and soul so stop dancing around the topic if you don't have anything meaningful to to add @@macaronitony1991
Naw, keep that shit out of the community and we'll prosper far more.

I have a few friends who aren’t able to live their lives openly similar to Luther. Mainly because of religion, family or society. They always vent to me about what they want and how they want to live but for whatever reason it’s a struggle for them. Once I turned 18 and came out to my mom who accepted me I stopped caring about other peoples opinions. You get one life on this earth, as long as you’re happy and you’re not harming yourself or anyone else be you and live your life unapologetically.
Well said…. We let religion, personal opinions and persecution, culture, and race ruin humanity….Live your own life and your truth! ❤️

I’m a millennial whose father constantly played his music, so I grew up listening to Luther by proxy. Now is 2024 I can still recall my favorite songs - some romantic they bring tears to my eyes.
It’s so funny how wide our musical taste can be, and what moves us.
RIP ❤
He died of a broken heart. He couldn't be with who he wanted to be with. Things were harsher back then, they would have massacred him had they found out his secret.
Little Richard was before him and he was gay out loud and successful.
@@eyesthatsmile-heartthatlov8050Little Richard had an outrageous personality which made things a little easier for him because thar shifted the attention from his sexuality so we can't really compare him to Luther, he would have certainly had it much harder especially because of the type of music he does (romantic ballads)
It was no secret that Luther was gay.
@@janjr165 He never came clean about it, so it was a secret, I guess only those closest to him knew about it.

This broke my heart, Luther was one of my childhood idols, and to see and hear that a man who gave us so much love didn't have one of his own is so sad, Rest in Power Luther we miss you and will always love you ❤
He made huge sacrifices. His emotional battles created issues which led to an early death. .....To barely make it to 50. The older I get, I see it more. Suffering will cause physical self damage. His music heals the soul, but now knowing some of his story, he's sent another important message- love thy authentic self too. Luther was a precious gem, that the world will never see again. May He Rest In Peace🌿🌼
He deserves a biopic. His voice was butter.
I fell in love, got engaged twice, and git married.
Dance with my always makes me cry it remind of my dad.
I cried when Luther passed. No ove songs like Luther
That he does but I doubt his estate lets that happen afraid of his authentic self will be drug through the mud even in death but he was amazing plus they don’t need the money ❤
How are you going to assume his sexuality because his inspirations was females??? Even if he is gay.. why does that part matter?
@@MrKellyELAI wonder about that. Elton John was openly gay and his career didn't suffer. Little Richard was openly hump everything so maybe we could've handled it

Jennifer Holliday and Luther Vandross became good friends, and they had fun together with FOOD. Jenny said they would literally fly out to other countries just to try out restaurants. Jennifer said Luther kind of got mad when she lost weight and of course she didn't understand at first why would he get mad, then she realized Luther thought he also lost a friend. Eventually they made up. I wish they recorded something on the studio.
