Hey Sanya - do you know if by this spring the south jetty will be accessible with the construction? I was told you are able to still get out around the fence and hike out as far as you want but wanted to see if you knew any more. Thank you!
I checked regs it appears that's open right now for rockfish on the south jetty Oregon side can u confirm also is there a better time for lings off the rocks spring summer fall ??? Thx bud great vid
Adam, page 14 of ODFW defines lingcod not as game fish, but as ground fish. Page 19 DOES say it's illegal to gaff gamefish. But page 20 explicitly says is IS legal to harvest lingcod with a gaff.
Sanya, at the point in your Columbia jetty fishing career, what do you think is the ideal gaff length? I want to build or buy one, but I don't have a sense of what length is optimal for gaffing your own fish on a jetty. Thanks!
xyzct I have a 6’ long gaff and the hook diameter 3”&3/4”. It’s long enough to reach of the jetty rocks into the ocean and the hook is big enough to hold a 38” lingcod.
Sanya, am I correct in assuming that if you catch a ling of questionable size, you just use the rod to land it so that you don't hurt it in case you need to release it, but if it's guaranteed keeper size, you use the gaff? And do people use nets on the jetty, or is that just too hard to hike with, and also it gets hung up when landing fish? I live in Cannon Beach, and I'm planning my first jetty trip in a few days. Thanks for your help!
Thinking about going out there to fish but would like to know were could i buy the rubber bait or the name of it . I would like to try it this weekend.
Sanya, I know there is currently construction on the South Jetty, but someone told me that there is no construction on the weekends, and that some brave souls have been heading out around the fence. Do you know if this is true? And have you yourself been heading out? Also, at what swell size will you say "pass"?
It’s really hard to go around the Fence because there’s a security guard watching making sure nobody is trespassing, but what me and my brother did is we drove down to social security beach, parked there and then hiked to the jetty.
River side. But I'm not exactly sure on how far these guys are out there. I've gone as far as 2.5 miles out. Long walk. Be prepared for high ocean currents this time of year. Dangerouse in the winter time

Spring time when it just opens in March is the best time for lingcod.
FYI it's illegal to gaff ling cod of any length in Oregon

That’s correct. If it’s small, pull it out with a fishing rod. Only use gaff if it’s large because you will loose it trying pulling out by line.
@@sanya10145, thank you :-)
