Greg Hook we’d love to get after some up north. The old timers down on the jetty catch a 40 incher now and then. But that’s about it. They all taste delicious though!
I've been doing nothing but lake and river trout , bass , perch , bluegill fishing and so forth these past couple years. Hitting the coast for surf perch , Bass , rock fish and ling cod here in the next week or two. I'm literally only 1 hour away from the coast and am super excited to see what I can get.
That was me for a long time. It's really cool just to catch some of the crazy ocean fish and they all taste great! White flaky meat. We make a lot of fish tacos around here! And you can catch all of them from jettys. So many species that congregate there. Good luck to you!!
chonch burger nice eye, do you know anywhere that I could learn all the species of fish that are common to catch on a jetty, pier, or in the surf? Is there a website or something?
TheWard there’s a similar jetty down by Garibaldi, Barview Jetty that we fish, it’s very similar. Still big rocks, but much easier access. We catch sea bass and lingcod there using the same tactics. Just not usually as big of fish, but keepers. It’s where we recently filmed the newest crab snare video. You might check it out.
Glad it helped! Working on a new jetty fishing project geared more for lincod that should be much better. Getting away from the gopro's bad audio. Good Luck!!
Thanks you! The shrimp works really good on the kelp greenling and you have a chance at catching a bunch of other species including perch and sea bass. Jigs are the way to go for the sea bass. There are two tackle shops there in the harbor, one at the boat launch/Newport Marina right behind the Rogue Brewery and the other is Harry's Tackle across the bay on SW Bay Blvd. Harry's carries a ton of tackle and bait.
We might haver to check that out! Had a blast with Keri Lynn in Garibaldi this past June. We are always looking for new Oregon Coast adventures! Thanks!!
Pretty sure the sea bass and greenling are there. The spring seems to be better for lingcod. The cabezon season should be open as well. Do double check the oregon regs on that and size requirements. You can also fish for surf perch. I know the dungness crab are in as well. A friend of mine went out of Garibaldi last year mid july with a guide and caught more crab than they could eat!!
joseph paul I try to put the size of hooks, hot links to buy them on Amazon and all my gear in my video’s in the description below. I do believe it’s a size 2 octopus hook that I use with the sand shrimp tho.
That break line is where the flat gravel bottom of the main channel meets the big rocks creating the base of the jetty. Predatory fish like sea bass and lingcod like to cruise that edge and ambush new bait coming into the the jetty. It also gives them a quick escape into the rocks as well from other predators such as seals and birds. Much less snags if you can land your rig on the gravel bottom close to the big rocks, and the fish can locate your bait much easier.
It does roll around a bit. But that’s good, because it will settle right on the edge of the big chunk rock, right where most of the fish are cruising looking for food
I have heard of guys using slip bobbers with herring and letting them drift way out with the outgoing tide when the salmon are running and doing well. But never heard of anyone catching them with spoons. Might be worth a try though.
For the most part we used sand shrimp for the greenling and sea bass. We actually caught the ling cod on a whole greenling. It originally tried to eat one that my buddy was reeling in. You do have to count a greenling used for bait as part of your daily limit. But they are awesome bait!
I used to catch 5-6 footers up in Edmunds north of Seattle. These ling's you guys are catching are just babies

10:05 that's a buffalo sculpin, not a cabezon.

The hardest thing about jetty fishing in New Port are the rocks to navigate and not break one's leg. I'm too old to get close to the water there.

@@SilhouetteOutdoors cant wait my guy
friend very good video a question the shrimp works or not and how do I get that bait that you are using

You do it exactly how i do it, so
you're smart.
Jojo West they are all great tactics for sure! I’ve never been skunked out there, love jetty fishing!
Nice vid. Thanks for the info. I’ll be out fishing that jetty at the end of the month. Always looking for different baits to try. That’s a nice cod.
Thanks! You're welcome! Can't wait for our annual trip down there in June. How good is the fishing in April there?
I’ve only been once a couple years ago. My buddy caught a nice ling. I left empty handed.
Newport tradewinds charters are the best, ask for captain dillans boat.
We might haver to check that out! Had a blast with Keri Lynn in Garibaldi this past June. We are always looking for new Oregon Coast adventures! Thanks!!
good job guys.....
Thanks you!
Good video. Thanks for the info. I just subscribed to your channel good luck
Thank you! Really appreciate the sub!! Tight lines my friend
I'll be over there mid July. Never fished in the ocean before. Any idea what I'll have luck with and what fish will be hitting good at that time?

Do you use the same set up and bait for seabass and cabezon?
We did catch a couple cabezon using jigs. Nothing very big though.
what size hooks do you use

what’s the significance of the “breaker line” 10-20 meters away from the jetty rocks? What happens there?
That break line is where the flat gravel bottom of the main channel meets the big rocks creating the base of the jetty. Predatory fish like sea bass and lingcod like to cruise that edge and ambush new bait coming into the the jetty. Is this in california
No, all of my Newport fishing videos are taken in Newport Oregon
How is your weight not just rolling with the current?
It does roll around a bit. But that’s good, because it will settle right on the edge of the big chunk rock, right where most of the fish are cruising looking for food
Can you catch salmon from the jetty with spoons?
I have heard of guys using slip bobbers with herring and letting them drift way out with the outgoing tide when the salmon are running and doing well. But never heard of anyone catching them with spoons. Might be worth a try though.
It’s called piggybacking when lings try to eat the fish you have on
It was also a grand lesson on how to catch them too.
For sure! Ocean is a whole new ballpark
ive only ever known it as a hitch hiker
Is this newport Oregon or California?
Aaron Washington Newport Oregon
Can i use gulp sandworms with sucess?
I have no doubt you can! They work on surf perch as well. I killed it on the jetty for sea bass using gulp sandworms!
What bait were you using?
For the most part we used sand shrimp for the greenling and sea bass. We actually caught the ling cod on a whole greenling. It originally tried to eat one that my buddy was reeling in. You do have to count a greenling used for bait as part of your daily limit. But they are awesome bait!
dont lingcod like lizardfish?
Kosi Sanchez to be honest I have no idea what a lizardfish is?.. But they do love greenling and I've caught them on herring!
Silhouette Outdoors those snake looking fish with the sharp teeth their a redish brown color
Nice place just not Newport Oregon.
volume is super low i cant hear for shit
