- Hill walking and a night at the Secret Howff bothy, Cairngorms Scotland.
Kevin and I set from Keiloch on the Invercauld Estate for an overnighter at the Secret Howff. The next again day we set off for some Corbett bagging and do Creag an Dail Bheag and Culardoch for a great weekend away on the hills.
The location of the Howff is NOT given away in this film, but there is some subtle hints of the location. If you find The Secret Howff do not share the exact location online.

Cool thanks mate
😁 👍🏼
Great hike guys! Nice to know there are some places kept secret, adds to the fun of finding them for yourself. 👍
Totally, there's plenty clues but no one gives away the exact location. That said, someone said in the visitor's book he found a GR after 40 minutes of hunting on Google.
22 Oct 20 Was at the Howff yesterday with some of the maintenance legends who have kept the bothy pristine for over 30 years. It was my 5th or so visit over the years. It is a magical place. Long May it remain secret. What a fantastic wilderness the Cairngorms is/are.
It's a fantastic howff in a cracking location, it's great to hear its well maintained after all these years.
It's such a great feeling when you sleep in the Howff, it makes you feel a small part of it's Amazing History.
Agreed, visited before but it was great to stay.
Cheers
Robin
Stay the night is a much better experience as you now know Robin.
Cheers guys, very good video, very well produced, aye a guid day oot fur thi walkers, yon bothy wis braw😀
Cheers Kenny. 😁 👍🏻
Another good video mate, unbelievable the lack of snow for this time of year
Cheers mate. Maybe some fresh snow this weekend. 🤔
You were going a canny clip there mind, guess I must be getting old. Now that is one place you do not want to pitch on that ant nest lol! Nice 31 January entry in the book and nice to see his friends remembering him. I know the weather has been mad but no snow in the Cairngorms...., looks like summer there! Cheers Alan
Cheers Alan, Adam Watson is bit of a legend. He was a scientist and mountaineer who often studied the Cairngorms.
Think snow could be back on the cards this weekend. :(
Haha bouncing aboot like a couple of maddies wi that old skool. Cracking stuff 👍
It was a good laugh. 😁
Cannae beat the old skool 90's classics 😎😁
What a great adventure yous had.. Going to enjoy finding this place..looks great!!! Loved the dancing lol.. Nice one thanks for taking us along..atb :)
Cheers Jules, good luck finding the Howff, it's a great wee place.

Another cracking weekend away bud & a brilliant video. 👌 Roll on the next trip.
Great film. Cheers Robin.
A great video of what looked like a fab weekend 😊 I have to say though.. candlelight, Spandau Ballet and a wee night away in a secluded, secret place? Who knew Robin was such a romantic?! 😂😂😘
You've had romantic bothy nights too. 😘 x

@@Kev_Russ it's the other way about. 😂 😂
@@Kev_Russ haha. I think she probably hates the fact that you keep going back, even more! 🤣😉

Thanks Murray and for the sub back too.

Im glad you hid the location !! (its not in the Bothy Bible) .The first time I was there was 1968 . many times later through the years.. Great videos Robin !
Cheers Larry, yeah just a mention in the Bothy Bible. I had to edit a bit of the video after someone pointed out I almost gave the game away on footage where I had the map out.
I've been 3 times, that was the first time staying over. Great trip.
Hope you're well mate, take care.
Happy 40th.
I had to think there as I've not long turned 40, but it was Kev. 😁
Just re-watched🤦♂️ what a laugh...🤣🤣
😂 👍🏻
Great Video 😁 I really liked the book idea logging in your stay so others can see.
Twice I've tried to find the secret howf when I've been in to Ben Avon but now know that I've been looking in completely the wrong place. Another fine trip though guys. Cheers.
Do you reckon you'll find it 3rd time lucky then?
@@WalkWithWallace I'll have a better chance now I reckon, I didn't really want to stay there, just wanted a look so who knows.
@@alanmethven4437 pm me on ScottishHills if you want a more accurate location. 👍🏼
Hi, Excuse me barging in... Bothy Cave -v-Man Cave==BOTHY LIFE....Jack Archer--Ashie Brebner--Ian Mitchell--Alan Holmes... I saw these chaps about 10y ago, & read about how they were caught in a storm. Went to this location for shelter. & came back later to construct this (man cave) The farmer found this & let them carry on. I have a Nice Pic' of the guys Laying about inside. (I won't mention the signpost with XXXXX this way).
Nice one John. Would be good to see the pic. Must have some stories. 😁
You rattled some mileage in on this one , decent night at the Disco Howff lol .. it looks fairly well hidden which is maybe good thing .. Did you have the muffler on your gopro ? Its proper wild country up there with such rugged terrain . atb Dave .. PS 40 aint old try 51 !!! :-( I still act like a kid though ..
It is well hidden on the hillside, you don't know it's there until almost on top of it. I used the Saramonic mic with a muffler, the wind was fine until we reached Culardoch, I used the trig point as a buffer. Haha. Gotta act like a big kid, keeps you young. 😁
Awright bud, was it fine leaving your car overnight at keiloch car park? Says no overnight parking
Yeah absolutely fine, think that's to deter the vanlifers.
Hey, that looked like you had cracking weather for the two days (😒), not jealous much 😂 I’ve not done any walking in the Cairngorms as of yet but will need to make the trip this year at some point. I was worried for Kev around the 14:00.00 point, it looked as though he was going to get speared at any point 😳
Another great video 👍🏼
Cheers Jimmy,
The Gorms are great for exploring.
Admittedly I'll need to look at my trekking poles when attaching them to my ruckie.
Cheers
Robin
Very nice wee video, I really like how you explain along and point out what you are talking about! The views from the summit, even with the cloudy Scottish weather, is unrivaled in its beauty IMO. This made me laugh along as I also vote the Spandau Ballet would have the ancients rolling over in they graves!! LOL great fun thanks again
Haha, thanks for watching and commenting. Is it an area you'd like to visit yourself or try and find the Howff?
@@WalkWithWallace I have been to Scotland three times now in three years, and I enjoy it every time. The first trip I drove past the Cairngorms on my way to John O'Groats but couldn't stop very long. 2nd trip I took 12 hour Highland tour from Edinburgh to Ft. William, was spectacular. I have problems walking distances anymore, so I cannot climb mountains sadly, but I used to when I was a spry young lass...lol
@@annieharmon8564 you can't beat a good Scottish road trip. JoG is a mission to get to. 😁
@@WalkWithWallace ha! IKR! Picked it out on the map during planning stages and said, yep, I need to go here...lol what a beautiful drive, totally worth the work to do it. I didn't want to leave...never do when I get to visit Scotia...🏴❤🏴
@@annieharmon8564 definitely worth it, I went on to Orkney after a night in JoG.
I just looked at the date, February and 99.? % snow free, oh dear.
Yeah that was a poor winter. Very different this year.
so, whats the difference between a Bothy and a Howff?
My thinking is; the word bothy derives from ‘an bothan’ which means a small house/hut. Howffs are a bit more rudimental and basic, like this one built into the hillside or a natural rock like the shelter stone.
thanks Wallace. great content btw. ive walked the Lakes, Cumbria, around Inverness and around Snowdon, when i was younger. never seen a Bothy or Howff though.
Cheers Peter, they’re not for everyone but well worth a visit or an overnight stay if you get the chance.
@@WalkWithWallace if am fit enough again i will.
What's the Scottish protocol, leave matches, energy bars etc.?
When you got the books out of ammo box I thought I saw an olive drab foil wrap of US cooking fuel at the bottom.? I assume there's enough ventilation that carbon monoxide ( solid fuel blocks are notorious for it) is not a problem.
Hi Roger, the protocol is to leave the place in a better condition than you found it. Generally we ask you don't leave anything behind.
Plenty ventilation in the Howff, but if there was more than 2 of you, maybe take turns at cooking.
Thanks for taking us along on your walk in the hills. That wee howff was cute I am glad you kept the location secret :D
I thought you captured some really nice footage of your trip. How were your feet in the new boots ? I always hate it when a pair of walking boots need replacing I got a new pair last year It took a while to get used to them :D ATB Teddy
PS had to skip the ants I was eating my lunch while watching ;D
Thank you Teddy, the boots are great thankfully. Nice and wide for my odd shaped feet. 😁 Sorry about the ants. 😂
Cheers
Robin
@@WalkWithWallace It's ok I will let you off ;D Glad your boots are ok :D
@@TeddyWandererCamera-Bear phew. 😊 Definitely sold on the new boots. Had them on all this weekend too.
I’m name jokin fan I say this but the scenery is I’d expect for the countryside, a wee bit driech but the scenery makes up for bowfin weather
Cheers John. It's not always bowfin to be fair. 😁
Go bak ta Lindos fer ya holidays
⁉️
@@WalkWithWallace it was a crack nothing more, sometimes I comment as I’m watching at a joke you make, I shall try to be more specific in my comments sorry my lovely 🥰
@@OldOwl2003 lol, 😁 no worries.
@@WalkWithWallace I am truly sorry I can see how it looks, but you genuinely were cracking me up with the things you were saying that one was in relation to the crack you made about Rhodes 😂😂😂😂
Hi again. You have Instagram. Lol
Lol aye @WalkWithWallace
Robin in box me with bothy location please if can
Hi mate, it's not really in the spirit of the Secret Howff and I got a bit of stick for this video too, I ended up editing a couple of bits out.
Nebother mate got vid 👍
@@northeastwildcamper cheers bud. 😁
@@WalkWithWallace I also got a lot of stick when I wrote a blog about the Secret Howff even though, like you, I didn't reveal its location! Seems some people think it's still a secret but I found it no problem by following the trail of online crumbs.
@@BillKasmanScotland yeah I edited a bit out of this video as there was a scene where I'm talking about our route on the map and it gave away some clues.
If you do some due diligence online it's easy to suss out.
I wish I understood English so I would know what they're saying!
Tried CC. That didn't help.
Probably the Scottish accents mate.
