I stayed at that hotel, mainly because it was the cheapest I could find at the time. Ironically I was amazed how good it was, considerably better than Travelodge or Premier Inn, loads of tea coffee and biscuits etc. they also seem to be individually decorated, as other Wetherspoons seem different to each other.
I worked in this pub for 7 years, a long time before it became the White Lady, back when it was called The Westbury. I started there at a youthful 17 years old as a glass collector on Friday and Saturday nights and by the time I left I was the bar supervisor. It's certainly changed a lot since those days. Thanks for the flashbacks though, the picture in your room that was drawn by a pupil from Corstorphine Primary (where I went to school too) is of the old parish church, which is also where I married my wife. I moved out of Corstorphine in 2000 but have lots of fond memories growing up there!
i mind the westburys and agenda days. used to be jumping shame it was a magnet for the gangs from drummy and sighthill to fight. Which in the end became too much and got it shut down.
Ever since I found your videos I’ve been binge watching 😂😅 I feel like your a friend now, you’ve taken me to places in Scotland I wouldn’t be able to tackle with a back and hip problem, thanks to you both 😊 and a happy new year 🥳 🎉xxx
That happened to me too Maureen! I stil have a few to watch but I found Steve when I was ill in bed & now look forward to every new one 😍 I have a knee problem so can't get about much atm & Scotland is a long way from Dorset 😐
Similar story here. I’ve been struggling with my mental health these past few years, but ever since I first watched one of your videos back in November, I’ve been working my way through the others, sometimes as many as 12-13 a day. Glad to have finally caught up, and seen all of those lovely/quirky places which you are understandably attracted to. Thank you so much for just being you, and for helping to distract me from my problems.
I’ve stayed in The White Lady a few times and found it excellent value for money and love exploring the shops nearby. Plus there a loads of buses that can take you into the city day or night.
It was so clean - and obvious that the caretakers love their jobs and the hotel. The only thing that scared me was the maze that it was inside. It looked like a death trap if a fire occurred 😰. Thank you for the awesome tour and laughs! Safe travels - Shalom! 🤍🙏🕊
I love Edinburgh and as you say such a beautiful walking city. We stayed near the University and walked every where covered so many miles and went to the Waverley train station daily to visit other cities and crossed off our bucket list visiting St. Andrews! Wetherspoons were handy eating spots and the Doctor's Pub down from our hotel was wonderful. If you had to have a ghost you sure got a lovely one! 🙂. Very impressed with the room and price.
A good strategy to get off to an early start the next morning. The hotel looked good value for £80. A high level of cleanliness can make up for small deficiencies in a room but the tea and coffee tray was generously stocked. A lot of places could take a lesson out of their book. Well done!
Wow! been seeing a lot from you this week. I liked it when Alicia popped up in the video. Can’t wait to see where you travel next. Edinburgh is my favorite city I was there in 2012 and 2018. I was awestruck when I got off the train and glanced up at the old city wow. It’s probably old hat to you, since you lived there, but I love it.
Good to see a bit of Montrose and the journey down to Edinburgh. Didn't know Wetherspoons did accommodation and the room in "The White Lady" looked fine. Having a bath alongside the shower, is always a bonus! Impressed you got up so early(pity missed breakfast), and surviving the "ghost" during the night! 👍 😊

@@steve-marsh- Steve, Happy New Year to you and Alicja. I really appreciated the sunlight effect behind the Edinburgh Castle beginning @ 04:30 as a photographer. Will you ever go back to the Castle to visit the various military museums now that you've moved out to Montrose? When I was there with family, they prohibited photos, but I believe you'll find a method to have that prohibition lifted for your channel, similar to your evening effort at the Rosslyn Chapel? I repeatedly review that video due to your unprecedented evening access to the Chapel -- ua-cam.com/video/o3t91YxoZZY/v-deo.html. It was so very well done!
Canadian/American here. I've stayed at a Wetherspoons! A couple actually, on the same trip: The Bull & Stirrup in Chester, and the Kings Head Inn in Salisbury. Cheap & cheerful and I knew what was available for breakfast :)
Another Great video, and the 'Famous Alicja' strikes again! What a Laugh.😂 You guys are 'The Best' - ALWAYS Informative and Fun to watch. 'Happy New Year' and Safe Travels.
Stayed at a Wetherspoons in Wigan after a recommendation from the Groom of the wedding we were there to attend & we loved it! And being that we had come from across the pond & everyone wanting to catch up with us while we were in town/country, we held court in the pub downstairs pretty much everyday. The room was wonderful & over and above the discount price we were paying.
Funnily enough, the Wetherspoons I used to go in as a college student in my home town is now a Wetherspoons hotel as well. At one point we had 2 x Wetherspoons and a Lloyds bar in the town 😮 Fortunately it’s got more of a local flavour now.
Montrose High Street. I've been visiting Craigo, near Montrose, since I was a few months old. 80 next month. Do you remember Mitchell's buses from High Street? Hume to many 😅
Hi Steve, thanks for your response. Some jobsworth in Angus District Council decided to call it North Craigo many years ago, which was wrong. Its actually the North Cottages of the Craigo Estate, as Craigo village is not on the main road. It's about 5 miles towards on road to Marykirk.
I have been in Wetherspoons' pubs/restaurants. They seem to offer good value on both food and beer. I like how they post in menus the prices of beer and other beverages and of decent quality and quantity. Remindes me of the chain bar/pub/resturants here in the USA like Chilli and Applebees. Actually Wetherspoons' does what pubs did generations ago, offer food, drink and accommodations. Certainty a good value place in a city, the kind of accommodations and pricing I like in my travels. Good to have the guest appearances of the 'ghost' and Alicja. We need to see her more and to keep you out of trouble. I can't wait until Saturday for the next stop in your adventures !
On my trip to the UK this month I had my first take of Wetherspoon’s. It’s certainly not the best food, but it’s cheap and easy. Thanks for all the great travel inspiration as always!
@@sheenamaclean8324 perhaps not, but when you don't have the highest expections, Wetherspoons generally meets them. And while I have a definite love-hate relationship with them (I find the main owner a total prick, and not just because of his political views), I can appreciate how they have lovingly saved quite a few landmark locations from the wrecking ball, like the former cinema in Cambuslang (a horrible suburb of Glasgow, but what a pub!), or the North Western in Liverpool, or Hamilton Hall in Liverpool Street Station in London... A brilliant start to the year Steve. Looking forward to following your 2024 adventures. It's great to see that you both survived New Year. Safe travels.
Great video stayed in one in Southend-on-Sea a few years ago. Found them very comfortable and reasonable priced. Hope you and your good lady had a good Christmas and new year.
Tend to agree! And believe me, this was the cheapest option by a MILE on this night, the only other places were shared bathroom etc, so this was the clear winner
Nice views on the trip from Montrose to Edinbvrgh, the Wetherspoon's hotel room was well equipped for the price, and not too far out of town, so the best of luck on your trip to??? and I'm looking forward to the videos of the rest of your trip Steve, All the Best.
When you talked about a kilt you made me chuckle. I remember someone telling me that a lot of Scotsmen where them to a futball(?) (soccer) game I believe it was and without underwear. I was just picturing that in a large stadium of people and smiling. Something we wouldn't see here in the United States. I enjoy a Scotish accent and am enjoying the videos that are coming up on my feed of yours.
Thoroughly enjoyed your video! I live in Northern Virginia (Washington DC suburbs), and found it interesting to see you poking round your 'local' area, which is remote & exotic to me. I've been to Scotland (and England & Wales) numerous times in my youth (1970s-80s), thanks to my mom, who was a Briton living in the US, so it was nice to see some of your local area of Scotland, which brought back many happy memories of my earlier visits. We stayed at a hotel in the Haymarket area during one trip, I recall. Funnily enough, there's a town called Haymarket not far from me now. I don't think we ever saw a Wetherspoons pub during those trips, but they look nice, and very reasonably priced! (A beer at a bar/restaurant here in my suburban Virginia town is easily $6 to $9.) The hotel room looks very nice, too! Thanks for the videos. I really enjoy them, and your down-to-earth presentation. They are great!
I remember that place. It used to be the Harp Hotel (and Bar and Restaurant) in the 1980s and 1990s. I think I remember it was called something else before The Harp earlier in the 80s. I was in the bar many times when I was young and visiting Edinburgh. Later, when I was living in the city and my parents came to stay for my 'graduation', we wanted a low key, traditional food place a few days after 'graduation' (after the expensive meal places!!). Proper food again. It certainly did great, traditional dinners. It was a really nice, down to earth place. Oh, it was so good to be able to get normal, traditional British style meals even back in the mid 90s, but now they can be like gold dust. Once traditional cooking was roughly the only food you could find if eating out in the UK - that includes the 70s & 80s more cosmopolitan staples though - Beef Bourgogne, Chicken Chasseur - but really I mean, basically meat, spuds, two veg. (Though I turned veggie myself 15 years ago.) SInce the UK went all major "foodie" and international, its own, simple cooking has been abandoned mostly when eating out. To find traditional meals of this part of the world, noThai green curries, no pasta swimming in sauces, no indian curry, no pizza, no burritos, no american burgers and chips or chicken wings, is amazing these days. I'm not saying I don't like those foods - I really do also but I feel strongly that simple, traditional cooking ought to be easy to find when eating out.
Hi Steve...it's amazing just how many ghosts you two seem to find !😂😂😂 Although that room looks a bit old fashioned...that was more than made up for by being quiet, clean, comfy bed, and those yummy freebies to nibble on !
I didnt know Wetherspoons had hotels. Im impressed with what l saw Steve. Loved the wee painting you showed in the hotel. Wishing you both a great year of adventures, all the best.....Alioban ❤
Another great video. I've flown from Edinburgh twice. Due to hotel prices I once stayed in Dunfermline and the second time stayed at a great hostel in Glasgow ( 4 am start the next morning though).
Hi loved the video, we have two weatherspoons in Hull and the busier one they built an hotel on top ,the glass lift to get up to it is in the middle of the pub it's got a fabulous high up beer garden it's got 49 rooms and around that price for a room how good is that 😊😊
I also wasn't aware they had hotels, looks like a decent place to stay. Great to Alicja reprising her ghostly performance again.😂 you must hate those early flights by now, but maybe better to avoid crowds and delays.
I need a bath in the evening Steve, essential after a day of activities but I also need my shower to wake me up in the morning!! I would never have considered this hotel but I would now. Thank you and a very Happy and Adventurous New Year to you both.
I stayed at a Wetherspoons hotel in Dunfermline for £81..... the room was massive, bed really comfortable and getting to the airport was really easy....decent enough food and a couple of cheap pints....bus connections to the airport were quick, driving was less than half hour....recommend it!
We stayed at Weatherspoons last Sept on our first trip to Scotland, and also found it very pleasant. We enjoyed exploring the shops and bakery nearby. My great grandmother came from Montrose so it was lovely to get a glimpse of your city too. Cheers from Ottawa, Ontario!
Hi Steve. My wife and I stayed in a couple of Wetherspoon pub “hotels” and were very pleased with the accommodation. Good value and a bonus of an excellent evening meal and breakfast. What is there not too like when on a budget. 👏👏👍😀
Great bonus video. I always prefer a proper bath in a hotel room as opposed to a shower. Lovely to see Alicja pop up as well. I wasn’t expecting that - I thought the white lady was in your dreams! Can’t wait to see where you are going.
When 'the white lady' walked through the room I thought "that's the perfect height for Alicja" and then she turned up. Really nice editing. I've been at the White Lady once, it wasn't bad at all. Wetherspoons might not be the best quality pub, but nevertheless they aren't bad places considering. I rather stay at a hotel+pub than a hotel in the UK. Hotels nowadays are almost all the same, wherever you are in the world. Pubs with lodgings like some Wetherspoons or Marston Inns always have a unique atmosphere when visiting. The hallways might be dull, the food might be more or less the same everywhere, they are still a unique feel you can only find in the UK. And I never had problems with the noise (Wetherspoons never have music: one of the reasons they can be cheap is by not paying music licenses and thus go without music). In fact, I never heard any noise from the pub when staying above one. I guess I've been lucky...
I stayed at THE WHITE LADY a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I booked early and got a realllllllly nice room at a realllllllllly nice price. Also stayed at the 'Spoons hotels in Birmingham & Inverness. Where I'd stay for sure if I ever make it back.
Wow, that place was spotless Steve, how good to have a bath and a shower. Luxury these days. Hope you had a safe journey to your next destination and Alicja enjoyed the Christmas Market etc xx
Happy New Year to you both. My husband & I have stayed in The White Lady about 3 times, we thought it was good value for money, as you said it's very quiet & very clean, we 'd highly recommend it , from me in Irvine
Another recent binge watcher here - I've been back to Scotland five times in the past eight years, but recently became mildly disabled, so I'm afraid no more Highland walks in my near future, so it's amazing to be able to trudge along with you and Alesja just seeing the sights again. Aside from your channel, the closest I get to Scotland now is learning Gaelic on Dualingo, so keep 'em coming!
first time commenting but i just had to for this vid! i did a double take when i saw the thumbnail because i stayed in the white lady the first time i ever visited scotland (back in october 2018!). honestly it looks the same as when i went 5 years ago (dark wallpaper and all), which is great to see as far as upkeep is concerned 😄 you're right about it being a good thing to be far from the pub by the way, our room was right above and it was certainly apparent once dinnertime came around🤭thanks for taking us along and safe travels!
My husband and I love your videos …. Lots of great scenery and laughs. We live in Canada but travel to Scotland often …. We have many places now that we want to go see after watching your adventures. Hope we run into you someday on our treks 😊

Nice video Steve! And love seeing my local spoons in the video haha. I work for said company you travelled with here and I love working this line along the coast to Aberdeen. The views are just fantastic!
So nice to reminisce about my only trip to the UK! I got to be in Edinburgh during the Christmas Market during 2019. It was wonderful! I followed the Water of Leith down to Leith as well, a great and scenic walk.
As someone who has spent only 4 days in Edinburgh it was great to recognise a lot of the places shown. As a wetherspoons shareholder, glad to see you supporting the business, lool. Not paying the license fee for music is part of why they can serve the drinks cheaper than other pubs.
License fees just to play music? Its utterly nuts tbf. I knew a company got £5k fine due to a random pot shot caller from PRS called the moment where a colleague's phone rang and they thought she was playing music. I told the manager to take them to court and defiitely not to pay it. Punchinr: the company was forced to. Mad world
Wonderful statue on Corstorphine Road featuring Robert Louis Stevenson's characters from "Kidnapped", David Balfour and Alan Breck Stewart, not far away, I believe. Got a quick view once from a bus! Fun video and Happy New Year!
It's a strange one, a bit rough around the edges, but also very real and we love it here. And when you get down to the beach it's just like WOW! Absolutely stunning
Ah Corstorphine. The home of my family for generations, and myself during school holidays many decades ago. It seems like only yesterday going into the shop (Wm Lowes) just opposite the pub (shown as Steve goes into 'spoons), helping Grandmother carry back bags of spuds down the hill to Carrick Knowe. It was a really lovely place back then. I hope to get back there some time. Oh Steve, what a brilliant collection of videos.

They are quite literally brilliant. Have stayed at 4 and all have been exceptionally clean, smart...yes I know...really well priced and quiet.
Tend to agree! And believe me, this was the cheapest option by a MILE on this night, the only other places were shared bathroom etc, so this was the clear winner
Happy New Year to you and Alicja Best wishes for 2024 ....Brilliant Steve , The hotel has been noted and one for the future.
Stayed in the white lady once and the family room we had was Massive and really nice. Breakfast was great also.
Steve, I enjoyed this very much. I've not watched your videos for a while but my wife keeps me informed when you're in Edinburgh! :)
Steven, I pray that you and Alicia have a wonderful new year mate please be safe! 🎉😊
And the same to you pal! :)
Thanks
Heyyyy thanks very much! 🙃
Hi Steve...it's amazing just how many ghosts you two seem to find !😂😂😂
Although that room looks a bit old fashioned...that was more than made up for by being quiet, clean, comfy bed, and those yummy freebies to nibble on !
Thanks again Steve and Alicja. I love the variety you’re putting out there!
What fun today! I love exploring different options locally (for you anyway)! The white lady was great!!!
Thanks Steve for a great video of Edinburgh. Nice hotel you stayed at too. The civic center was waaaay to crowed for me, love the walking tour.
Yeah I get worse with crowds as I get older!
Loved Alicja's touch, brilliant 😂
Hi loved the video, we have two weatherspoons in Hull and the busier one they built an hotel on top ,the glass lift to get up to it is in the middle of the pub it's got a fabulous high up beer garden it's got 49 rooms and around that price for a room how good is that 😊😊
Haha love it, I'll need to come and stay there one day!
Funny seeing Steve stroll about your home city - cheers for the video!
A pleasure mate!
Totally agree mate!
Recently moved so haven't seen Steve's videos lately; nice to see him 'back in action!'
I'm hooked, your travels are so fun! Thank you.
Great bonus video. I always prefer a proper bath in a hotel room as opposed to a shower. Lovely to see Alicja pop up as well. I wasn’t expecting that - I thought the white lady was in your dreams! Can’t wait to see where you are going.
Haha that White Lady was still there next to me when I crept out the door first thing in the morning :)
I always learn something from the comments section, cheers! :)
Lovely surprise to see you both mid-week. Nice video, nice hotel Steve, thanks for sharing 🥰
happy new year to you crazy kids. looking to your upcoming videos. roger
Nice! I'll be keeping an eye out for them on future trips for sure
Wow 😲 nice 1 Steve you can't beat weatherspoons absolute lovely room and great food happy new year 🎉 to you both all the best John 😊
All the best to you too John!
Wow, that place was spotless Steve, how good to have a bath and a shower. Luxury these days. Hope you had a safe journey to your next destination and Alicja enjoyed the Christmas Market etc xx
Great videos really enjoying it, keep on the good work greets from holland!
You cannot go wrong with Steve's travel videos - the best I've come across for sure.
first time commenting but i just had to for this vid! i did a double take when i saw the thumbnail because i stayed in the white lady the first time i ever visited scotland (back in october 2018!). honestly it looks the same as when i went 5 years ago (dark wallpaper and all), which is great to see as far as upkeep is concerned 😄 you're right about it being a good thing to be far from the pub by the way, our room was right above and it was certainly apparent once dinnertime came around🤭thanks for taking us along and safe travels!
Haha no way! Not much changes eh :)
Steve, I just discovered your channel and am enjoying it! As for this hotel, I like it! Like the decor for a budget hotel. Cheers, gov!
Stayed in one in minehead was really nice and did the job
My husband and I love your videos …. Lots of great scenery and laughs. We live in Canada but travel to Scotland often …. We have many places now that we want to go see after watching your adventures. Hope we run into you someday on our treks 😊
Good on you Steve, anither guid yin! Loved you vids with Scott too! Cheers from Oz.
From Edinburgh, but almost twenty years in Canada. Love you're channel, it makes me quite homesick!
Very interesting and entertaining.....as usual Steve , looking forward to the next episode cheers
Aww that was fun…hi Alicija and I’m sure she will have some fun shopping. Thank you 🤗
Oh she did indeed :)
@@steve-marsh 🤗😁
Thanks for a lovely video Steve, so nice seeing alicja again, room looks good and the bar is reasonable. How I envy your fitness, can’t wait for the Spanish trip
Fantastic! Love an Alicja 👻 appearance 😂 Happy New Year to you both! 🎉
Montrose looks like an absolute delightful village. Hope you enjoy living there.
It's a strange one, a bit rough around the edges, but also very real and we love it here. And when you get down to the beach it's just like WOW! Absolutely stunning
Great video Steve, hope the White Lady didn't keep you awake too much ! Hotel looked great. Looking forward to the weekends' video :)
Happy 2024 Steve and were back again!
Happy New Year to You too!
Oh Steve, what a brilliant collection of videos.
great video - I have stayed at the Kings Highway Hotel (Wetherspoons), Had a nice room and the price was pretty reasonable but its better to book in advance.
Happy New Year and all the best for your travels.
Funny you turning on the tv to antiques road trip ! Something I like to watch when visiting the UK (I’m visiting from Canada). And my husband loves to watch snooker!
That looked like a Great hotel, Steve... Close to get a bite to eat and drink... All the best in your travels.👋
