- Lyrics ♥
So wild, standing there
With her hands in her hair
I can't help remember
Just where she touched me
There's still no face here in her place
So cool, she was like
Jazz on a summer's day
Music, high and sweet
Then she just blew away
Now she can't be that warm
With the wind in her arms
Valerie, call on me
Call on me, Valerie
Come and see me
I'm the same boy I used to be
Love songs fill the night
But they don't tell it all
Not how lovers cry out
Just like they're dying
Her cries hang there
In time somewhere
Someday, some good wind
May blow her back to me
Some night I may hear
Her like she used to be
No, it can't be that warm
With the wind in her arms
Valerie, call on me
Call on me, Valerie
Come and see me
I'm the same boy I used to be
So cool, she was like
Jazz on a summer's day
Music, high and sweet
Then she just blew away
Now she can't be that warm
With the wind in her arms
Valerie, call on me
Call on me, Valerie
Come and see me
I'm the same boy I used to be
I'm the same boy I used to be
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!
Nothing better then driving in the summer time at night listening to 80's music like this one
Build the goddamned TIME MACHINE already. We're all dying to GO BACK and never resurface in this stupid century.
now that's goddamn right !!! LOL I'm with you !
Seriously.. 2020 has been the most messed up year. I miss the 80s and 90s.
ABSOLUTELY!!!
I'm coming back in time with you please
Man, having that sort of power would be great. Finally being able to escape the shittiness of the late 2010s and the 2020s.
I miss and love the 80's
So full of emotion and power, god i miss the 80s !!!
you're right, the 80's so full of emotion, strength and power, then the 90's came and we were vulnerable and lost but with just as much emotion, then that emotion died in the 2000's, that's why we're here I presume.
One of THE very best songs of the 80's.
All these years and I never knew he was saying Valerie lol
Lerone Williams
Me too!!!
I always thought he was saying follow meeeeee
ROFLMAO! Me too!!
Me neither 😆
Call on me is what he says
He’s saying both_~<
Follow me
Valerie
& my aging heart breaks a little
I named my daughter after this song.... 1988
I did as well
Nice!!
One of the most perfect arrangements in pop music.
Happy 76th birthday today, Steve!
So full of emotion and power, god i miss the 80s !!!
Valerie Carter - the great singer - top tier vocalist - listen to her songs, "Cook With Honey'', "The Story Of Love", "Da Doo Rendezvous", "Ooh Child", "Ringing Doorbells In The Rain" , "The Blue Side", "Tryin' To Get To You", "Wild Child", and many more. Rest peacefully, lady with an angel's voice. Your records brought me so much enjoyment.
I remember this song came out when I was 5 years old in 1988. Playing on the radio listening this in the car with my parents😃

THEY DON'T MAKE 'EM LIKE THIS ANYMORE!!❤❤❤❤❤.....Thanks Steve and Tom for the memories from way back in 1987!!😏😏😏 (Not that that was a particularly pleasant time for me it has to be said, starting Sixth Form at "Spuds" in Southampton(!), however this song definitely helped sweeten the anguish)

They played this song when I got my Goddaughter on the Zamboni at a Rangers game. So glad I just found it!!
I am mighty glad that I was born in 1987...the year of the ultimate music!!!!
I dunno buddy, I'm pretty certain just about every year of the 1980's decade was an ultimate music year...

Kim Carnes~ Betty Davis Eyes
Lita Ford~ Kiss me deadly
Def Leopard~ Pour some sugar on me

Jazz on a Summer's day 😀
Steve Winwood - Valerie
That snare drum, though.
I herd this song the first time in 2020 in the pandemic lockdown s
Although the lockdown s were very sad depressing and scary times for people
At the same time good memories 2020 as my Papa was still alive and all my family was doing well
My Papa dyed April 23 2021 and sadly Nana did pass February 23 2020 and I miss them both to the day as well as my whole family misses them
But in 2020 lockdowns we still had Papa at least and the lockdowns were good memories for me personally and I really appreciated the chs closed because I’m kicked out of the faith so having ch closed made coping with being kicked out of the faith easier but everything else about lockdowns was very sad because it was a scary time
I wish things could go back as they were in 2020 especially for someone in my family and i really today more than ever wish that the churches would close down again because I’m not welcome in the church and I can’t handle the multiple people who have to go to church it’s not fare and it offends me especially the people who are very devoted

Stevie was better

On this day Wednesday, 31 of January 2024, I dedicate Steve Winwood's "Valerie" to my own Valeria. We meet today Valeria, after months of talking, I will make the 2 hour drive to overcome the odds, our own busy lives, and a language barrier between my English and your Venezuelan Spanish....and I really do hope that from this moment, you Valeria , will always call on me!
DE VOLTA AO PASSADO, DULLY FM!!!
2019 Someone?
Listening on Christmas eve
70 people dislike this song? These people are crazy
Steve Winwood and I have the same birthday---May 12! Also, George Carlin! (R.I.P. George!).
I just looked him up--we were born 20 years apart (Steve and i!)
Just found out the story behind this and about the lady it's about❤
The supermarket audio brought me here.
Best in class comment right here.
The casino audio here in Vegas brought me lol
Eric Prydz's Call On Me samples this
1:06 Call On Me
This is the true original HI Fi version played on the radio.
My hero, if someone can help me how can I find the Winwood´s 21h year career concert(1987)? It´s important to me, because it was a memorable concert.
Nowadays it's too much of a chore when entering 'valerie winw' into UA-cam since it's only after 11 characters that the 80s hit is distinguishable from its 2000s namesake!
Hey man i am the 1 with the windz in my hair🎼🤣🤣😜
At last following multiple variations of the search query "call on me".........
Should've followed that with I'm the same boy I use to be.
MacKeeper Review better than me. I only had the melody stuck in my head. Finally found someone I could hum it to and they knew what it was.
Loved this song when i was a kid. I knew a Valerie. My friends sister. He pulled her shirt down one time when they were wrestling and i saw a nipple. I was attracted to her best friend though Leslie. So thats my Valerie story.
that feeling when my middle name is Valerie

Guess the actual original (1982) version is rare?
So this is where Eric Prydz got the sample...
Said the same thing randomly heard this song on the radio and was astonished

About Valerie Carter?
525Lines if you look her up it says on her Wikipedia page that this song is about her. I hadn't even heard of her until I saw these comments! Where HAVE I been? Lol!
I only learned about it recently myself.
525Lines Really? Well, now I don't feel so bad! 😀
Nope. This song was about Marianne Faithful- though Winwood himself has never confirmed who the real inspiration to this song was. It was about a dear friend he lost to drugs.
