I heard this song 30yrs ago when I was a child. I was sick, had chicken pox , and was listening to an oldies station when I went to bed. It's one of those inconsequential moments in your life that for some reason never forget. The "Hop on the bus Gus, don't need to discuss much" line has stuck in my head my entire life, having never heard the song again after that night. Finally, 30yrs later the line popped into my head again and I finally searched and found this song. I feel like I was teleported back to my childhood bedroom as a 7yr old kid as soon as this song started playing. The human mind is a funny thing sometimes.

This song means so much to me. I am about to 29 this Halloween... But when I was in highschool, it was like my "bestfriend" song with my homie. We just loved it so much like all classic music. But we were particularly fond of this one... Unfortunately my bestfriend passed away coming to my house my senior year in a car accident. But you know what was weird? Is that this song came on the radio when I was driving to the funeral. Of course I busted into tears. At the same time though. It kinda felt like he was reassuring me that he was okay and in a better place. Still to this day.. This song makes me think about everything. Why he was taken so young. All I can come up with is the old saying - the good always die young. Or something to that affect. Because Dusty was a spectacular person. Never in my 29 years met anymore more genuine, caring, talented, and badass as him. Anyway. Hope this doesn't make anyone sad, its not the point. I just had to honestly vent. Even if it is to the "open air" like this text box.
I believe loved ones can communicate if they wished problem is we fear. My mother passed and the next night my sister saw an apparition starting to appear in front of her and closed her eyes and said no. So i laughed at this and yelled at the ceiling that mom could visit me whenever. That next night i was awoken by someone squeezing my leg. I freaked. We will always pass it off as coincidental because we dont 100% believe and fear. But there is life after death, that im positive of..
Sang myself to sleep with this song while in a abusive relationship 30 yrs ago.... I could not leave as I just had a baby. But as soon as I was able I left ! That was 29 years ago and I never looked back ! Was divorced 1.67 in my pocket 2 small babies under the age of 2. Today they are college grads and successful.
Yeah I believe the times we're all in we need some positive notions ways or things. Sometimes change is the answer. Hope all goes well with you friends.
This song was really ahead of its time, in that it acknowledged that men could be stuck in toxic relationships as well as women and also had the right to tell someone and leave. Also, it's fun and catchy as hell.
It's about a guy cheating on his spouse. Nothing suggests anything toxic, nothing suggests his spouse is to blame at all. The only thing we hear is that he is talking to his mistress who wants to convince him to end that relationship and stop two-timing. So not really "ahead of its time", just a basic criticism of age old behaviour.

As a 70's teen, I must of had at least 50 cassette tapes of songs off the radio. Somehow, I managed to have "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover" multiple times on multiple tapes❤ I still have them in 2024!
I'll be 60 in a month and a half and I keep trying to nail down the first song I learned all the words to from beginning to end. It's down to either Billy Don't Be A Hero or 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. And I made a LOT of those tapes too!
In college, I took ASL classes. At the end of the semester you had to pick a song to interpret in sign language. I feel like this would have been a REALLY fun song to pick. My teacher was deaf person, but she used to be hearing. She lost it while in college for music. And after coping with losing music as she knew it she became a teacher and to stay in touch with the thing she loved she had us do these projects. I get stage fright but she used to say to us: it’s not about you. This project isn’t about you it’s about allowing a deaf person like me to experience music. And because this song tells a story I think she would have loved us picking it.
As in i agree with Paul's song writing. He IS the meaning of underrated. Textile mentioned in the latest dictionary. Nigga's flying with no acknowledgment. The muse don't give no shit
+David Biggart Your grammar conveys exactly the opposite of what you want to say. Using 'but' means 'anything except pure genius'. Which means that it was not a work of pure genius.
+Napoleon4778 The comma makes his meaning unambiguous.. (The technical acceptability of this brand of sentence-to-fragment comma splice in a casual context is left as an exercise for the reader, but to be perfectly honest there are better exercises.)
Thanks. I used to love listening to this song when I heard it on the radio, when I was about 10-11 years old. I had thought it was funny then, and there was a nice woman who helped out our family, and she sometimes took me with her, when there was no one else available, and this song was playing on the radio in her car, so she sang along with it, and smiled looking at me. I always used to like to watch the adults who were driving back then.
I was born on Fathers Day in '71 (June 20). I remember my Mom and Dad singing the song, not at the same time, when I was a kid. This might sound like a preliminary to a common sad story, but they are still married. I guess sometimes you need more than 50.
This song was the push I needed to leave my controlling and toxic ex. He said I would never find another man in this town. He's right, turns out the only man I need to be with is myself 🤟

The distress of having to end a relationship. The cynicism of being on the giving end of hurt instead of the receiving one. It's never comfortable when you actually care. It's hard to describe but the tone of this song does come close. Rhymin' Simon is one of history's greatest balladiers.
I've been listening to the tune for almost 50 years. Just as entrancing then as it it now and will be in another 50 years. Steve Gadd put his stamp on it.
I was in a toxic relationship like ten years ago and I constantly heard this song play on radio but, I’m out of the relationship now and I rarely hear this song play anymore. Straight coincidence.
My dad used to sing this fairly often, especially the line "hop on the bus, Gus" when he and I would take the bus together. I completely forgot about this entirely for many years until this morning when my boss gave my a ride to work really early in the morning just as the sun was coming up. He turned on the radio and this came on and I was like wow, how did I forget about this song.
Absolutely adore this song. Heard it a few years ago, when breaking up an abusive relationship. It reminds me to love myself, to be free, to let die what hurts me (even though it is good in some other ways). Life is too short to put yourself in second place :)

So much of this song is so good... • Gadd's groove, first • Paul Simon's signature soft singing - crystal clear vowels, soft and soothing consonants, singing lyrics like he's talking • Great, subtle unison backup singing until that powerful "discuss muuuuuuuuch" • The droning single-note soft finger picking of the acoustic guitar during the chorus • The luscious acoustic guitar chords in the verses, with nicely chosen spare string groups • Gorgeous, gorgeous recording and mix with lots of space left for quiet
You're forgetting a young Tony Levin on the bass providing both the thumping groove during the chorus *and* the ethereal counterpoint during the verses.
This was the first Paul Simon single I can recall buying. I loved the drums. Growing up in the singer-songwriter era of the early 70's gave me some great songs that would prepare me for adulthood.
I'm going through a bitter divorce from an abusive partner. This song really hit very close to heart.i feel better listening to the chorus and I did a small dance and even smiled after days of misery. Thank you Paul Simon, you're a legend!
If he really is abusive, he’s living in pain right now. We’ve all been there, weather it’s mental or physical, we’ve all been there. Hope you’re okay now!
It was the fall of 1975 my play brother asked my mother if I could go to the movies. That's how he became my big brother. Off to the bus stop we'd walk. He had a small radio and this song came on as we road down town. Will never forget those days walking down town to the movies or catching the bus with him. Funny how things become so valuable just to catch a city bus with your big brother and go see movies. I ended up marrying his sister when I became of age. When he got out of prison and saw we were together he was blown away of the man I became after 20 years. So this song means a lot to me!
I was a little kid when this song came out. I and everyone else loved then, just like people LOVE this song today. I think it came out in the early 70's

Lyrics
The problem is all inside your head, she said to me
The answer is easy if you take it logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
She said it's really not my habit to intrude
FURTHERMORE I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
So I repeat myself, at the risk of being cruel
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover, fifty ways to leave your lover
Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan
Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free
Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan
Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free
She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said, I appreciate that, then would you please explain about the fifty ways
She said, why don't we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe, in the morning you'll begin to see the light
And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover, fifty ways to leave your lover
Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan
Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me
Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free

It's healthy to remaness I think as long as you choose to remember those who pass they they will always exist.

The definition of timeless
I'm 51 in November and you're right. Timeless.
This song was really ahead of its time, in that it acknowledged that men could be stuck in toxic relationships as well as women and also had the right to tell someone and leave. Also, it's fun and catchy as hell.
I don't think it was ahead of it's time. To me it feels perfectly from the time it was released

Paul Simon is an American treasure
In college, I took ASL classes. At the end of the semester you had to pick a song to interpret in sign language. I feel like this would have been a REALLY fun song to pick. My teacher was deaf person, but she used to be hearing. She lost it while in college for music. And after coping with losing music as she knew it she became a teacher and to stay in touch with the thing she loved she had us do these projects. I get stage fright but she used to say to us: it’s not about you. This project isn’t about you it’s about allowing a deaf person like me to experience music. And because this song tells a story I think she would have loved us picking it.
Every beat, every note, every lyric...... perfect.
Thanks you, Mr. Simon for the eternal grooves!!!! ❤❤❤🤙🏽

Using 'but' means 'anything except pure genius'. Which means that it was not a work of pure genius.

4) "Hop on the bus, Gus. Don't need to discuss much"
5) "Drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free."
So much of this song is so good...
• Gadd's groove, first
• Paul Simon's signature soft singing - crystal clear vowels, soft and soothing consonants, singing lyrics like he's talking
• Great, subtle unison backup singing until that powerful "discuss muuuuuuuuch"
• The droning single-note soft finger picking of the acoustic guitar during the chorus
• The luscious acoustic guitar chords in the verses, with nicely chosen spare string groups
• Gorgeous, gorgeous recording and mix with lots of space left for quiet
You're forgetting a young Tony Levin on the bass providing both the thumping groove during the chorus *and* the ethereal counterpoint during the verses.
This was the first Paul Simon single I can recall buying. I loved the drums. Growing up in the singer-songwriter era of the early 70's gave me some great songs that would prepare me for adulthood.
