People don't realize Bruce's whole body was a weapon..!!! He truly was gifted beyond measure with the things he could do. And i think a lot of it had to do with how in tune he was with his inner strength. That inner strength was projected outwards. You couple that with outer physical strength and the two combined is awesome. He surely put this cocky guy in his place awfully fast. And i knew he would all along. Besides all of that he was a great guy and a visionary in terms of combining all styles of martial arts into one form. That's what made him "Taboo" back in the day. Is that he embraced it all instead of just focusing on one aspect. RIP Bruce you truly were something very special.

Bruce Lee was amazing & I have been saddened my entire life over his passing. I'm a black belt in Jidokwan Tae Kwon Do. Not even close to Bruce's skill level on my best day. Bruce was a visionary, and true leader in the martial arts & theatrical martial art movies. His movies from the late 60's and early 70's have better fight scenes than we have today.
What people dont realize is Bruce didnt participate in organized Karate because he wanted to be in movies that would reach world wide audiences. Back then, Karate wasnt popular with people. Bruce knew what he was doing and hit the big screen. But his fighting skillset was REAL! Bruce was not a person you would want to tangle with.

I was in a class with a 9th degree Korean who lined us up about 1 foot away from a wall, he did this and it felt like he hit you with a bat and then it hit my spine before I hit the wall. We all felt this way.

Look, if the best chinese fighter was chosen to beat Bruce Lee and miserably failed in a single round, no one in the entire world could. In all his films, without special effects, we saw how speed destroyed all his opponents. No one to this day...ever could match his personal self-discipline alone. Bruce is someone in 1000 years.
I'm sure there would be someone out there in the world who would actually be able to keep up with Bruce's speed or have something to properly counter his speed in some way. As great and as legendary Bruce's physical prowess was, we ALL have to remember that he was still *mortal/human* at the end of the day before anything else (and yes, I'm a Bruce Lee fan as well btw).

I'm stunned that nobody is bringing mathematics into this. F = MA. Force equals mass times acceleration. Bruce Lee's acceleration was so fast, so even if the mass of his arm was low, his 1" inch punch was huge because of the force.
it is more than that. he understood that every physical action causes an opposite reaction.
that means when trying to emit a force through the fist, the same force goes in the opposite direction. usually rooted into the ground or the inertia of the body. if you work with inertia, any part of the body can be the root or base. but the inertia is limited.
more or less unlimited is the rooting in the ground. the body is usually aligned symmetrically where the left foot is grounded when the right hand is pushing. the movement starrts in the middle of the body (dantien) and goes in two opposite directions, the left foot and the right hand. everything more or less at the same time. the inertia and the rooting together with the right timing releases enormous power. if you look carefully at the slow motion video, you can see the expansion of his rear foot.
he practically connects the fist with the ground and every body part including a turn of his hips, synchronous to his shoulders serves this expansion in a time synched manner. in tai chi - where he learned this - it is called 'fa jin', an explosive force.

I liked that part of your film footage towards the end when it shows Bruce practicing both his back fist and side kick combination against that gent in the karate gi and on the set of Enter the Dragon. What dazzling speed Bruce had. Also, the footage of him practicing his side kick at home. And he only was trained in Wing Chun which was primarily only a striking martial art? Where did he learn that side kick? I think he internalized it on his own after arriving in the US and saw it used in the karate tournaments that he attended. Maybe the Jhoong Rhee or Ed Parker tournaments. He just went home and practiced and practiced it until he was able to perfect it.

Please understand, the 1 inch punch is a theory put in motion. I learned and now teach it, but not as a fighting technique. 1 of my sifus who was 140 lbs, used it on my friend who was 6'7" and 325lbs. It blew him off his feet and into a wall 8ft away. He learned from Bruce and taught me. It jumped my hit power to a crazy level.
Don't get stuck on what the video shows. Again, it's not a fighting technique, but a skill to better you.
I bugged Sensei John Carrigan to show me it 30 years ago. He had spent a long time perfecting it. He said "I will show you it half power because full power would seriously damage you". I thought, "How powerful can 1 inch be???" It blew me 20 feet across the room and was a total shock to the system. I had his knuckle print bruises on my chest for a month. i wouldn't ask to be shown it again, young and foolish.

The one inch punch is actually a combination of several skills. The main skill that makes it work is not power, as your attention is drawn to, although it does feature lots of power. What surprises me is that he repeated the trick publicly so many times and it seems no one else sees it. And to answer your question, (2:17/min:sec) it IS practiced today, in dojos around the world. But the exercise goes by a different name and Bruce was probably the BEST EVER to demonstrate it. Hint, breathing, center of gravity, and TIMING are what make it work. And senseis LOVE to demonstrate it because it works well on black belts and even better on white belts.

I commend you for attempting to preserve this footage. It's deeply important to do so. When Bruce lived, digital video was very much in its infancy and was not really used, and it was nothing like it is today. But even AI with all it's amazing promises, has it's own limitations. Unfortunately, The AI colorization you used (early in your presentation) seemed to make it worse. 😔 This includes viewing it with a UA-cam player set to the 4k setting. 4K resolution for consumer media and television (including UA-cam) is 3840 x 2160 pixels, also known as 4K UHDTV or 2160p. This resolution has a 16:9 aspect ratio and more than 8 million pixels = 2160) May I ask what tool you used? AI comes down to what Model was used. Using a proper AI model that works on every frame of video, Uses pixel prediction and adding pixels produce the best results. May I ask what tool you used?

Not a chance would I let anyone strike me in the chest like that trained in that technique or not let alone Bruce Lee. Something like that could potentially cause trauma to the heart and possibly even stop it. Not for all the money on earth. Martial arts is supposed to train you to not get hit and to protect yourself not willfully allowing someone to risk killing you or causing serious damage.
The Red Belt in Karate depending on the system is for 10th Dan in some systems 9th & 10 Dan's.

If you want to see someone using the 1 inch punch, and breaking multiple bricks, walnuts and many other objects. Then look up Chinese 1 inch punch videos. There are several guys that are so powerful and fast, it rivals Bruce.

Considering Bruce Lee was officially 5'7", there is no way that person is anything more than 5'10" and 170 - 180 lbs. 6'4" person would dwarf a 5'7" guy.
This guy’s a grand master and was supposedly interviewed, in other words a person of interest and renown. If the claim is 6’4”, 220 lbs., I’m sure there’s a record and information somewhere.

Bruce Lee was an artist, not a fighter. He would destroy an untrained opponent on the street. However, I don’t think he would’ve made it to the UFC if he were in his prime today.

You think like that because you have no clue as to what Bruce Lee was about. He wasn’t a UFC fighter, MMA fighter or Boxer. He was trained the way Monks trained and Ancient Martial Artist trained. He trained to use Kung Fu only in life or death situations and when there was no other option. UFC, MMA, Boxing etc etc are for sport. They’re for entertainment. They have rules. Bruce Lee wasn’t about fighting for entertainment and sport. To him Kung Fu wasn’t a game it’s a weapon. A weapon only to be used when you may have to try and kill someone. That’s something you new generation UFC fanboys don’t understand.
What made bruce lee so special was that he had extraordinary mental power tunnel vision along with unbelievable high discipline work out routine in witch he was able to master training his subconscious mind to do more than you think you can do witch is almost impossible to do witch set him apart from everybody else he was truly special a lightning bolt coming down to earth for a short period of time to mesmerize us all

not to take anything away from Bruce Lee, I love him and he was a major influence in my interest in martial arts. Chinese martial arts and I'm sure other styles, include the technique of his one inch punch. People are doing it and have been doing it for a while, just not out there demonstrating it.

Before there was Bruce Lee there was Billy Jack. No disrespect intended. Bruce Lee was one of my role models growing up in the late 60s early 70s when he passed. Much respect for Tom Laughlin too. What a great time it was to be a kid having men like these as role models. These days we have drag queens influencing our kids and it’s a downright shame.
Bruce's 1-inch-punch is more of a 1-inch-push. He actually pulls his fist back a little, then shoves it into the guy, who is standing with feet parallel. It is VERY EASY to push someone over like that, not much harder to do it with a 1-inch-punch. There are lots of guys online now demoing the technique properly, with a break resulting from the strike, not just shoving someone standing with feet parallel.
He was special that’s for sure.
The one inch punch isn't used today because it isn't practical in training nor a real life situation. It's a power demonstration between two willing participants, nothing more. Besides, Bruce mastered it, watching anyone else try is just embarrassing. Most "martial artists" i've saw doing it ALWAYS pull their hand back at least 4-5 inches. :)
One troubling issue I have with anyone born after the boomer generation is that they view Bruce as a historical figure, a legend exaggerated beyond reality.
To boomers like me, he was a real living being who I only saw once in person, but saw much of him on broadcast media and movies. 1971 just graduating high school, Gojyu Ryu since 6th grade and last two years of hs in Tokyo at Yamaguchi Gogen’s dojo in Ogikubo (5-7pm six days/ wk.,) early kung-fu movies started being released.
1973, his big movie came out and he died shortly afterwards. He was a real person with superhuman abilities like the people you see on Stan Lee’s program.
And the Cat was real too. I did some interpreting for him when English-speaking guests came and once, of the only few things I remember from 52 years ago, he was asked about his experience as a pow in China and why he broke the wall and how he killed the tiger.
He only came out to lead the class once in the two years I was there but I remember his clean bright white gi with a flaming red belt and his hair untied, gray streaks dry and thinning with age. I’m not giving details …yet.

I never heard of Gogen Yamaguchi’s actual fighting exploits and he was 61 when I was at his dojo. As the only English speaking student at the Suginami dojo, I did some translating when foreigners came to visit. That was 52 years ago and I remember very little about his conversations with visitors… just a little about his experiences as a pow in China.
Although second hand, my Hong Kong friend, Raymond, who was about 7 when Bruce was involved in several street fights (Bruce must have been about 18,) heard of his superhuman fighting skills and witnessed the snatching a coin out of the palm stunt.
It took me two years of training 6 days a week under the grueling regimen of a traditional Japanese dojo. Gogen’s son Gosei who was already in SF with his dojo was losing students until he changed his style of teaching and started pampering his students.
I can’t fathom why you would disagree with Bruce’s contemporaries, champions and winners of tournaments who unanimously attest to Bruce’s speed and power.
After I returned to Japan for my second year of college at Sophia University, I joined the karate club of the international division.
There I met Bob. He was on his way back to CA after taking 2nd or 3rd at a Korean national championship- I tried looking it up but can only find records in English from Jhoon Rhee’s tournaments from the mid seventies on.
I was a cocky first degree black belt and Bob was a stranger who came to class out of nowhere. I tapped on the shoulder and said “wanna spar?”
He kicked the living hell out of me. Later sulking in the locker room, he came over and first of all admonished me for my arrogance and tried to console me for my feeble fighting skills. Bob was a 5 dan in Kyokushin and whatever rank in Taekwondo and third in Iaido.
He was so fast that I couldn’t even see his yokogeri let alone punches. As fast as he was he said that he’d be lucky to get a punch in on Gosei Yamaguchi and Gosei in turn would be lucky to get one in one Bruce.
Like the fast guns of the Wild West, reputations become widespread and guys like Bruce and Bob and Ed Parker get called out. Bruce, the likely father of MMA did get called out often in Hong Kong. Far more dangerous than MMA with rules and restrictions.
While in Japan, Bob was involved in two street fights that I remember. The first was one on one and he handily won. The next I believe was revenge for the first against 11 guys. Bob broke his arm while sending 4 to the hospital. As I said it’s second hand but Bruce was involved in real fights.
There are people who possess extraordinary abilities. I’m sure you’ve seen Stan Lee’s superhuman series. Bruce was superhuman in martial arts. Lewis, Norris, Kelly, Tyson, other luminaries and Bob say so.

@@jamestown4867 Gogen Yamaguchi not only trained in karate but fought in the russian japanese war from 1938/1945, he was sent to a prison in mongolia for 2 years , he did a lot of fighting during the war if it was not for his skill he would not have survived ,this is all facts but not only is it obvious he did a lot of real fighing , fighting for your life fighting there are also many rumers about him like the russians put him in a pit with wild dogs and he killed them all after that the russians gave him the nick name CAT because of how fast he moved, the man was a worrior thats why i said dont compare this master to bruce lee the actor

What everyone is missing on this post is that Lee's 1-inch punch was never a fighting application. Merely a demo on hip movement, weight shifting, and forward motion which Lee was indeed a master of and could apply to all his kicks and punches.
100% Joe Louis never fully grasped that. One can see he does not transfer the shift from the ball of his back foot up through the knees and into the hips before the energy moves through his torso and eventually into and through the shoulder down the arm into the wrist.

It requires a tremendous amount of transfer of internal pressure,created by the core muscles, to the legs,then the punch itself. Ever try to imagine hold your ground while someone is slamming their entire body into you, and you only had less than a second to brace? That is what it is like,and very few humans, infact I doubt any ,have that core strength

The 1" is in reference to the distance of the fist from the opponent, not the follow-through. If it was only 1", he wouldn't be making anything but surface contact.

It comes from the back foot. The energy is channeled up through his body to the fist. This is referred to as your center. It is where your power comes from. Ki, chi, and other iterations of the same concept. The energy is stored and released. It takes many years to achieve mastery of this energy. Bruce trained incredibly hard and was able to accomplish this at a relatively young age. Given his weight combined with speed and ki energy he possessed a formidable skill that enabled him to be fearsome. You could train one thousand people and maybe get a few that are able to achieve some level of what Bruce did. They would have to have the same level of determination and endless training discipline. This doesn’t come naturally. There are some photos of Bruce’s knuckles fully calloused from endless hours of striking objects. In all that time you will develop skills. Look at the Okinawa martial artists that train daily. Within their system they attain ability that makes them formidable fighters. Cheers

Look at Bruce's stance, and then look at the "Grand Master's" stance. I would gather that if the Grand Master had a similar stance, that the one inch punch would have had a "lesser" (not saying no) effect. It's a matter of changing the center of gravity of the person he was doing the one inch punch to. Look at another person he demonstrated that punch where their stance were different from each other. Again, I'm not saying his one inch punch is not effective. I'm just saying that in those demonstrations, if both were using similar stances, that the demo would have been less dramatic but probably still effective. Just my 2 cents. Having said that, i think Bruce could have contributed more to the art and movies if he did not pass away when he did. Too bad.

The power Lee caused the Grand Master’s spine to bow outward from the shockwave delivered to the sternum. Both clavicles were forced inward at center because the entire rib cage was severely compressed to take the blow. Any harder could have potentially caused an aortic tear of the heart muscle. As is, the man lost his wind and can be seen clutching at his chest, knees up in complete systemic shock. Even a police beanbag at point blank out of a shotgun would not produce such a wave of power through the upper body. Lee could have easily killed him but had such control at all times.
People don’t do one inch punch anymore, nor do they care about it because people actually weigh a fighter’s skills in fighting as a whole rather than the one inch punch. Can you imagine judging a swimmer’s skills on dry land?
First of all Bruce Lee was special. But all the people Bruce demo it on were standing straight up and not at all in any type of fighting stance, even a bit, so of course it is more easy to punch, push, knock them over. Also if you meet any good Wing Chung people they can show you the principles and demo the technique for you. But again Bruce was the man !!!
