This makes perfect sense. We need all personalities to add value to our world. I hope you do something you love, and through your love for it, value bleeds to the rest of us.
I've watched a lot of Jocko and I've never seen him seem so serious and tense. It's as if Lex's line of questioning made him go somewhere that he doesn't normally.
@@francorodriguez8252 100% agree with you on that. Lex was trying so hard to ask a question in the most absurd way possible, it was borderline cringeworthy.
I think he made him uncomfortable right away with all those questions about the morality of war at the beginning. Obviously Jocko is going to understand and read history and war from a completely different angle. They're not talking about the same thing.
So accurate! When Lex talks about the whole relaxing thing, it's a hard point to articulate and he gets it across. And then Jocko goes "I tell people to relax harder", that was perfect!
There are a number of questions the Jocko truly isn't understanding, not how to answer the question, but he isn't understanding even what the question is.
Lex isn’t trying to be complicated. That’s how he is. He lives in his head so it’s naturally difficult for him to achieve the same level of clarity and simplicity that Jocko speaks with.
Not entirely sure that “trying to be complicated” is what he’s doing, it just seems to be his mode of thinking & delivery style. Joko is a mature man of action with a brain-Lex, on the other hand, is a very intelligent & sensitive guy who is slightly dysfunctional & a lot younger who isn't.
I had a heart attack looking at it. You can see Jocko in a Legionnaire helmet thousands of years ago. A natural warrior and leader. Carved from granite.
In my opinion, this interview is a perfect example to why Lex is among the top interviewers in the world. His questions are so specific yet overlooked and never asked from other interviewers. The leadership case study was so interesting, I had to listen to it on loop a few times! Thank you @Lex Fridman
The best part about lex podcast is the vulnerability to express humility. I think we all feel like we’re not doing our best always. But it’s that pursuit that makes things enjoyable.
All of this felt like a long Turing test... At the beginning would have being perfectly ok if Lex started showing Grid collages of digital pictures and ask Jocko. "Point at all the fire hydrants"
This has to be one of Lex’s best interviews. I feel like I would have just gotten sorry for myself when Jocko answered the questions like he did. However Lex knew this was going to happen, prepared for it and perfectly blended his style and Jocko’s.
Its not always what is being said, but rather how it is said. recently had a falling out with my partner, and Jocko's way of talking made me feel so assured that I was going to be alright. thank you lex for having such a great guest on
One of my favorites yet. Lex, your questions have been on point, great progress. Jocko is like an iceberg, you managed to shed light on what lies beneath the surface.
Winning through losing is more valuable then winning. And when there's ego involved, challenge that ego and give it a chance to be humbled and shifted. Challenge being the main source of happiness. Creating the best version of yourself. So challenge yourself, and love to lose knowing you're doing something difficult and that is a win. That's what I learned among other things on this episode. I thought this was a beautiful discussion. And Jiu Jitsu is so powerful with changing perception. Makes me wanna get back on the mat.
The opening to this podcast, your love for being an American is beautiful and deeply moving. I love you, Lex. Don't stop spreading that love and positivity.
You’re not afraid of having the hard conversations- they are necessary and you do it gracefully. Thank you for that beautiful tribute to our country 🇺🇸
Are you afraid of dying? Ive heard this question a handful of times on a handful of episodes. THATS a hard question nobody wants to ask, and is necessary? Nobody asks it cuz its not moral and everybody should obviously not want to talk about their death, or how they feel about it. He knows it too, thats why he gets into his 'shy shell' when he asks. Its weird questions. Plus we all know and dont care to know the answers. Its either a "yes", and, well, duh...or "no", and your just a tough guy, who fears to show his fears. Because NO ONE, is not worried about dying and leaving loved ones behind. NO ONE! These interviews are like a 4 year old talking to fully mentally developed intelligent professional KIND people who not once speak their mind about these immature weird questions (not all questions). JRE interview....first question..."are you afraid of dying.....maybe, today?" Its unreal, embarrassing, and makes you want to spit your drink out, all at the same time. I hope one of these times someone speaks their mind about, "What kind of question is this". Put some russian cartoons on kid and grab ya sippy cup.
Lex conveys the pain of the Soviet experience in WWII like few I’ve seen. It’s clear how deep a wound was left by that immense suffering. We don’t often see that side of the conflict in the West. It was horrific.
it happens when you're a kid growing up in europe your parents and grandparents explain over and over their hardships and experiences with the war and post war which makes it hard on you feeling their pain
@@andreasauke5724 Exactly. After thousands of years of human civilization, I challenge anyone to say "something new" and completely "unheard of" in 2021. What a silly argument. As you said, it's the example that people like him set, day by day, that makes all the difference in the world.
Lex saying how self critical he is to the point he hates everything he has done is so relatable. I feel confident in the things I do but looking back I often find it like I could've done this or said this to be better and it doesn't paralyze me but it makes me reflect so hard
Jocko is so much different than many other folks you hear from on podcasts. 1.) He’s a great listener. Not sure I heard him interrupt or interject, at least not that stood out. 2.) His answers are almost always so simple and direct. Most of the time the answer is very simple, but for some reason we tend to want a more complex breakdown of something.
The first three minutes of this one are the most powerful. So good to see a grateful immigrant. Welcome, Lex. You are the type of New American my father and uncle fought and bled for in wars past.
A fascinating range of topics covered here, in depth and in very very useful ways. Jocko is as badass intellectually as he would be on the mat. Well done, Lex, for attracting such supreme guests and for wisely knowing how to get the best and all the use out of them that you do.
Lex really seems like a great guy. However, I had trouble with his lengthy sidebars/missives which disrupted the flow and tenor of this conversation. Ditto the Katherine de Kleer interview. He will get better and more consistent and I really appreciate the time and effort he is putting into this and all of his endeavors.
I feel it's actually the opposite most of the time, lex is much more to the point then most his guests. Here he talks more but I think you'd have been even more disappointed if the podcast had been normal lex jocko and reccuring 5 minute blanks lol, jocko isn't a chatter type
The first three minutes of this video...give me hope in humanity and this country. Lex, I respect and admire you from afar...and it's so inspiring to hear your words, behind all that Russian "stoicism"!
So love my Seals!! Nice to be introduced to Jocko. Thanks Lex. Just ordered his book Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win. My favorite for decades has been Leadership Secrets of the Rogue Warrior: A Commando's Guide to Success by Richard Marcinko . I so adore the Warrior side of you, Lex. I was an Army Military Policewoman, SGT, and lived by Marcinko's 10 Commandments as a blueprint for being a good leader. Now I am looking forward to Jocko's wisdom...nice Nuggett
Marcinko was a man that could perhaps be the most influential SEAL of all time. His legacy inspired already great warriors to step it up a notch. Only group of warriors close to the SEALS are the SAS, in fact the are so similar they do joint operations. SAS are animals. I unfortunately have to say in my experience the are tiny bit better than SEALS they are taught to have no restraint whereas the SEALS are often having to fight with ridiculous rules, SAS does not, they are like the Israelis. No rules in war, none.
i've watched so many interviews from you lex... and kudos for sticking in here LMAO i've never watched an interviewer give such open ended questions to where the person being interviewed just didn't want to elaborate LOL so brutal at times, like bro he's throwing u a bone talk

Props to Lex for not pissing himself when receiving the jocko death stare 18:36
I had a heart attack looking at it. You can see Jocko in a Legionnaire helmet thousands of years ago. A natural warrior and leader. Carved from granite.
hard to piss one self when one avoids eye contact to that extent.
@John Sampson Considering the fact that English is Lex’s second language, I’d say he’s pretty well spoken lol
I love the duality of this conversation.
Couldn't have chosen a better guest for Independence day 🥰🥰🥰🇺🇲
All of this felt like a long Turing test...
At the beginning would have being perfectly ok if Lex started showing
Grid collages of digital pictures and ask Jocko.
"Point at all the fire hydrants"
this guy is definition of a badass.. nothing but respect for this hero
This has to be one of Lex’s best interviews.
I feel like I would have just gotten sorry for myself when Jocko answered the questions like he did.
However Lex knew this was going to happen, prepared for it and perfectly blended his style and Jocko’s.
I agree. My cheeks were tight this entire conversation. I felt like I was Lex 😂 His interview style is certainly the best.
Me: sees lex upload: ooh
Me: sees guest: *OOOOHHHHH*
Same
Its not always what is being said, but rather how it is said. recently had a falling out with my partner, and Jocko's way of talking made me feel so assured that I was going to be alright. thank you lex for having such a great guest on
Falling out with your partner? GOOD.
One of my favorites yet. Lex, your questions have been on point, great progress. Jocko is like an iceberg, you managed to shed light on what lies beneath the surface.
Wow, what an interview! You both opened a many of emotional doors. It will take a lifetime to learn all the human inspiration received.
Lex’s intro is beautiful and pumps me up.. my family immigrated to this country and I feel the exact same way. I love America and Humanity.
This podcast is officially better than the Joe Rogan experience.
Fight me
Has been for a long time now
It’s alright. Rogan’s stuff has gone downhill lately.
...always has been...
Joe agrees
Definitely true since Joe went to Spotify. The decline really set in at that point.
I’ve been listening to Jocko for so long I almost know what he’s going to say
Hard to find more opposite personalities talking to each other.
@pinned : Lex Fridman Find something new and meaningful to do in life instead of scamming people.
Both are fans of black and white color palettes too
Hard listen. Had to bail.
Jocko to Lex: “Look at me. I’m the host now.”
Those last words, I can't stress enough as the truth. “There are no bad teams, only bad leaders.” - Jocko
So this is how it would look if Data interviewed Worf for two hours
Right on point
😂
lol brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!
Lex is the type of guy to send a get well card to an enemy he has killed.
or a love poem.
u r blind or deluded
Lex looks like an incarnate AI trying to learn what it means to be human.
That pretty much describes anyone born in the soviet union actually

Jocko is such an inspiring figure, the amount of things I learn from him is unbelievable 🙏
Same here. And some people say he's not saying anything new. But that doesn't matter. It's the example he sets. He is what he's talking about.
@@andreasauke5724 Exactly. After thousands of years of human civilization, I challenge anyone to say "something new" and completely "unheard of" in 2021. What a silly argument. As you said, it's the example that people like him set, day by day, that makes all the difference in the world.
Same here
Lex: Does the old man still got it?
Jocko: You talkin to me?
Lex: 😐
When?

This was my favorite part
I came to this video exactly for this.
Lol best part
Lex saying how self critical he is to the point he hates everything he has done is so relatable. I feel confident in the things I do but looking back I often find it like I could've done this or said this to be better and it doesn't paralyze me but it makes me reflect so hard
The way Jocko looks at Lex when he asks "What does it feel like....to kill another human being?" Priceless. These conversations can be titillating.

As a proud American I have to say that intro was beautiful! 🇺🇲
Lex's intro made me love my country more. Powerful speech
When Jocko was born, his parents were told "congratulations, it's a man"
(comment credit goes to Jocko's comment section lol)
I gave you this like out of respect for you being honest that you didn’t conceive of the comment 👍
Holy shit I died laughing reading this lmao
Here's a version of this that I heard somewhere: When Jocko was born, the doctor told him "Congratulations, it's your parents."
Lex: "Do you worry about this?"
Jocko: "No."
Jocko beat the sun in a staring contest
Pain recognizes pain. Love recognizes love. It is an odd balance. From one weird kid to another 💫
First Tim Dillion interviews Glenn Greenwall and now Lex interviews Jocko.
It’s is truly the 4th of July.
Love Jocko and all of his audiobooks. Thank you for this interview Lex🙏💫
This was intense.
Lex is the philosopher, Jocko is the soldier. Verbose v. Succint.
fascinating
I love lex but jocko ain't gonna play the deep poetic sensitive game
When Jocko went to school, the principal said, "when I grow up I hope I'm a man like you."

So love my Seals!! Nice to be introduced to Jocko. Thanks Lex. Just ordered his book Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win. My favorite for decades has been Leadership Secrets of the Rogue Warrior: A Commando's Guide to Success
by Richard Marcinko .
This was an amazing conversation. Funny, dark, compelling, informative, inspiring and easy. Thank you Gents 🙏
i've watched so many interviews from you lex... and kudos for sticking in here LMAO i've never watched an interviewer give such open ended questions to where the person being interviewed just didn't want to elaborate LOL so brutal at times, like bro he's throwing u a bone talk
I feel like Lex is more tense in this interview, and confrontational stance. Can’t blame him, but Jocko’s a genuine sweetheart and has a lot more wisdom to share with us. Thank you :)
Yeah there's periods where lex doesn't make any eye contact whilst talking for minutes at a time
Best interview of Jocko ever, in my opinion. Thank you both, have a great day!
I'd like to see Jocko the next expendables movie.
Intro.
First Scene. Meet the bad boys. Character build up. Explanation of the problem.
Second Scene. Enter Jocko.
End Credits.
stunt man of every male character
Honestly I wouldn’t, fuck Hollywood. Let’s get a game where he’s a playable charter
Lex: Hopefully I see you on a mat one day
Jocko: Could be sooner than you think.
The words, facial expressions, and body language of 1:56:20 - 1:57:38 says a lot more about this interview more than any other moment
