- Did you know that one in three people have a brain parasite? TEDxUNO speakers Maggie Bartlett and Madalyn McFarland share all about how this came to be, as well as possible solutions.
Maggie Bartlett is a first year Immunology, Pathology and Infectious Disease doctoral student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Medical Center (UNMC) and was selected as the Chancellor’s Outstanding Incoming Ph.D. Student. She is a UNO alumni with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biotechnology where she was an INBRE scholar.
During her time at UNO, her focus was development and testing of novel Toxoplasma gondii vaccines. Maggie will be the first Ph.D. candidate to pursue her dissertation at the United States Army Medical Research Institute for infectious diseases (USAMRIID) through a new pipeline program with UNMC. Her focus will be host-response immunomics, specifically of the immune repertoire to filoviruses, alpha viruses, and corresponding vaccines.
Madalyn McFarland is a second year master’s degree student in biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. After earning her bachelor's degree at UNO in biotechnology, she began her thesis work in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Davis, on the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Her work focuses on the development of experimental compounds into novel antiparasitic drug treatments.

My daughter had toxoplasmosis last year and was near death with seizures, rapid weight loss, mental confusion, body aches, and decision-making problems. We thought she was on meth or had gone crazy, it had changed her personality that much. Her doctors diagnosed her with lymphoma, but I knew what she had because they had an indoor litter box when she was pregnant.
I bought her fenbendazole, an anti-parasitic medicine that is able to pass the blood-brain barrier. In three weeks she did a total turnaround, began putting lost weight on again, was thinking clearly, and in 3 months, she was completely cured. If the T Gondii parasite has entered the brain, ivermectin cannot reach or kill it. Fenbendazole can. It saved her life.

It's an interesting topic. Would the human condition improve drastically if we were to eliminate the parasite? Are we symbiotic with them? Would there be unforeseen after effects by eliminating them?
I would theorize that in some hosts, they are symbiotic, while in others, they are a parasitic nuisance.

My boss got it years ago she said and thought she was dying her husband divorced her it wasn’t seen as common then and had to do with gardening bare handed because cats use gardens as litter boxes alot those outside cats . She said yes so they checked and it was toxmoplasmis but bc I never asked her if she took anything like this drug she definitely felt immune compromised and stayed away from many people during the pandemic. Iver is a life saver! One way it helped is, I had a strange pain in my left hip that lasted a month or so. Something told me to try ivermectin. By day 3 of taking 12mg/day, the pain went away. Before I got that pain, I kept getting attacked by mosquitoes while doing work outside. I can’t help but wonder if those mosquitoes had something to do with that pain.

An odd comment. The breathing practices of both these gals is almost immediately apparent to me. The taller gal, has a slower and more deliberate approach in the beginning. While her counterpart is spewing her info while taking shallow chest breaths. Forcing her to get out as much information as possible before her next short breath, and not allowing herself to fully oxygenate her brain. That's why you can see her eventually begin to slow and have to think of the next words she going to say even though this is a rehearsed presentation. Just something I've been interested in. Great presentation though.
