Their whole unplugged set is a masterpiece
I can't agree more!
2nd best Unplugged concert AIC had the best
@@granthosman2745 they’re both great
It should be written in history books
Lake of fire
Something in the way
Where did you sleep last night
Jesús dont want me for a sumbean
All apologies
The man who sold the world
The best songs on the álbum
Please do "Where did you sleep last night". His scream and pause toward the end of the song is probably the most emotional moment of any live performance ever.
its amazing i agree, what a song and Kurt absolutely nails it
Not sure if this is true but I read somewhere that the weird little pause and look he gives at the end of the song was because he had gotten light headed from carrying that long note before it.
I feel like she did, must've gotten taken down
DEFINITELY should have reacted to that instead of this one.
@@ItzBadger. Yea I think she did too.
“I thought you died alone, a long long time ago” wasn’t impactful then, but is weirdly haunting now, looking back.
I've always felt the difference between Cobain's version and Bowie's version is that Bowie sings like he's talking about "The Man Who Sold the World" and Cobain sings it like he IS that man.
Very well put
Ive always thought this same thing . I feel when he is saying your face to face with the man who sold the world its like he is saying the man or him that sold the world away because he didn't want it anymore.
Fan! Art! Now!
This might be the best description of this cover I’ve ever read. Absolutely spot on.
@@crustyskellington4056 It's something I've felt since I first heard both versions. Bowie sings like "The Man Who Sold the World" was a dear friend. Cobain sings like a man haunted by a past decision. Just my take though.
I love Kurt's tone and the effortless naturalness of his delivery - not to mention this is such a good cover. The texture of his voice really comes out through these sparse arrangements.
I was just thinking the word “effortless” fits this performance perfectly. Like we were in his living room and he just started singing it.
@@jayburdification He was amazing artist but his voice was pretty mediocre tbh
@@DuBstep115 the entire world disagrees
@@bubba6675 more like 50% of the word disagrees
@@DuBstep115 as was his guitar playing
Showing my age here but was lucky enough to see Nirvana in Australia in 1992. 16 year old me was so happy, old me is so very grateful!
saw them at 12 or 13 in the US. :)
@@da_uno oh noice!
showing my age here but im so jealous you got to see him live. I was only 5 when he sadly passed
@@floreaciprian9742 I was just at the right age! The Violent Femmes played on the same bill, was a fun night!
also kinda showing my age here but i wasn't even born when he passed:(( you're so lucky, i wish i could go back in time just to see nirvana live, i bet you had so much fun 😭❤❤
I count myself a lucky person to have been able to see Nirvana live in person.
yeah you should man! so happy for you!
I would love to hear you react to "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" from this same performance. That's my favorite song from the set. Kurt has one of the best wails of any vocalist ever.
Yeah I agree with this.
That stare he does when he looks up before his last wail, cuts right through me.
Mine is Plateau.
She actually has. I've seen that reaction, but I can never find it in her catalogue. I don't know why that is.
I think Kurt's authenticity is very much tied to the fact that he steered clear of elaborate techniques. It's very difficult to sound like you're spontaneously expressing yourself if your performance is too complex and polished. The band apparently stayed up most of the night before rehearsing for the unplugged performance, but emotionally, it still doesn't sound overly rehearsed.
He did have a lot of technique, just not on this performance, which I will never understand people voting for this song for a vocal teacher to analyze
The rehearsal was famously bad. The crew thought it was going to be a mess.
Kurt was one of the greatest melody writers of all time - it's amazing that a young man with no formal music training had such an ear for melodies. His voice was never as amazing as Chris Cornell's or as unique as Layne Staley's- but as you mention, it was authentic and raw - I think all of who went through that time were convinced of just how achingly authentic his voice was. Was lucky to see Nirvana twice live - both incredible experiences!
Another performance of his to check out is his rendition of Leadbelly's 'Where did you sleep last night?' - yes it's great from Unplugged, but the rawness and anger in his Paris performance of it is a window into a man absolutely at the end of his rope - Pennyroyal Tea live on French TV another great one.
Pennyroyal tea from this performance, was good on french tv too. but sick of the reactions for where did you sleep last night. it wasnt even the best performance of the night, just a really good end to the show.
Thank you Beth for reacting to another Nirvana song. I really love Kurt singing acoustic. His home demo of Do Re Mi touches me every time I listen to.
Oh man, the good old times of MTV being a music channel. Just noticed that his voice is similar to Brian Molko from Placebo
That's not how a comparison works. Brian Molko is similar to Kurt, not the other way around.
@@DaviniaHill if you insist on technical correctness and timeline instead of looking at the sentiment, you are obviously not wrong.
Watching MTV is like watching somebody take a dump……one of those dumps that require a half roll of toilet paper- disgusting, sloppy mudslide. I don’t understand why they didn’t change it to STV(ShitTV) a long time ago.
Jamie Duncan have you considered your diet when facing that issue?
You should listen to Pennyroyal Tea from this same live unplugged concert, he does it solo and the vocals are nice
I agree
when you said it was "country," i immediately said "YES!" -- because it's true. it's country in the old style, that emotional crack. Patsy Cline did it. i love that Kurt was well-rounded enough in his musical taste to understand how well that worked, and applied it to the undertone of this song.
His love of Leadbelly may have contributed to this...
I always thought he had a folksy quality to his voice. I think he did it on purpose to remain authentic sounding and nothing like the glam rockers that were so popular before Nirvana and other bands replaced them on the charts.
What makes Kurt Cobain unique is that his voice brings a sob. Essentially his voice is a sob on its own. He makes me wanna cry. He sings as if he does not understand that he is singing but as if he presents a piece of it in front of our eyes. Testimony of the soul without having to prove to anyone how great an artist he is. How sorry I am that he did not stay with us, to grow up with us. He had so much more to give us. RIP Kurt. We are poorer without you and We miss you 4 ever
I love your commentary! So much insight, empathy and depth. Thank you!!
I had a tough time watching you listen to this. The expressions in your face told everything you were thinking and feeling. This song drips melancholy and sadness, and certainly was a glimpse into his heart.
This is my favorite cover of all time thanks for this vid 🙏🙏
Thank you so much for examining this song! This cover is one of my favorite songs of all time and one of the few I can actually get spot on in pitch singing to in the car. Again thank you for what your doing on this channel!
Thank you Beth for always let me experiencing my favorite music in a new way :)
Thank you very much, Beth. I'm learning so much watching your videos.
What a way to start a week!! Good memories and great music. Recently I watched Dave Grohl playing a Nirvana song and I cried. Music people, music.
Kurt's voice was so raw and real, like whiskey on razor wire...
what he brought to music was a once in a lifetime thing.
there will never be anyone quite like him ever again
that you describing layne staley actually
I know this is weeks later, but this video has always been really interesting to me, because Cobain gives so much away, and most people don't notice. My father was a world renowned psychiatrist (although that isn't all that much renown, to be honest), and I'm bipolar, and do outreach to people with all types of mental illness. I have seen many, many, many depressed people, some who have gone on to commit suicide. I've been extremely depressed myself, depressions that lasted 18-24 months, they sucked very much.
There are a lot of "hints" that things are going really wrong: He's not bathing (his hair is filthy), he's cold (he is wearing a big fuzzy sweater on top of a shirt, everyone else is wearing one layer). His affect is pretty much gone (affect is your face's emotional responsiveness). If you look at his face throughout the performance, it's blank (another way of saying that is "blunted"). He's not making eye contact, or even looking at the audience, he pretty much looking at the microphone. He kind of looks like he already feels like he's dead. He looks like someone who is about to kill himself.
I saw this performance when it was aired (on MTV). I was freaked out when I saw how extremely depressed he was, and my dad and I actually talked about how bad Kurt's depression was.
If any of your friends ever look like this, please intervene, and try to get them to go to the hospital. Even if that friend hates you forever for forcing them to go into a hospital, it's better than their being dead.
This gave me a weird vibe as a kid and it still bothers me to watch it although it's so great.
Cutest nirvana fan I've ever seen! Love how you really listen to the music, so rare these days, most people don't really listen to music anymore, that's why music is so fleeing these days!
I enjoyed your reaction to this. It's a song that I listened to VERY frequently as a kid that lived in the Seattle area.
Looking forward to your next one. :)
Such an iconic performance. RIP to this Legend. Thanx for sharing. Loch Sloy! ~Be Blessed
I remember coming home and listening to this when I was 16 and was blown away.
Thanks for the analysis, as always, very clear and easy to understand
That guitar played by Kurt has achieved a Guinness World Records title for most expensive guitar sold at auction - $6,010,000
And the way it was sold was a disgrace
That was a great one, Beth!
One of my favorite covers of all time!!
I remember hearing the live album for many years until finding out it was actually filmed live, I gained even more appreciation for it after that. This is one of the best live concerts ever, imo.
Fantastic channel, I look forward to future content.
Glad you enjoy it!
I love your analysis of this. A very important performance to a lot of us.
Got this as a christmas present back then. Love it. Lake of fire is prob my favorite, but all here is gold.
Thank you Beth for reacting to my all-time favorite singer
Nice to see kurt being reacted on his performance
That bit of emotion from you at the end got me.
One of the few and great cover song. Thanks for the react Beth. Couldn't agree more, we should've taken more time and pay attention to what he sang.
I'm pretty sure I could watch Beth read the dictionary. So pretty, so much emotion in her face. love it.
He was great at that show, I started listening Nirvana with this CD, I not even was able to understand any english but this song was special as well as the full show
Amy Winehouse - You know I'm no good. Live in London 2007 MAYBE ? :D
If you notice weird jaw movements it was Kurt keeping time with his jaw. He would click his teeth like a metronome.
Check out Lake of Fire played on this same Unplugged show. Lake of Fire really showcases his powerful emotion, passion, and some nice highs
I remember have the cd..amazing
GOD I love her🥰 love her reactions ❤😂
Beth, just look at your face...you are mesmerized.
Man... This is awesome MTV unplugged 1994
Thank you for respecting the song and letting it end even though there was no more singing towards the end
Love Nirvana. Unplugged was amazing. This and Lake Of Fire are in my opinion two of the best songs on the show. His vocals really show throw in them. Its completely off topic but there's an artist that's really worth checking out. Patty Griffin. She does a song called Rain. Her vocals are unreal.
Trivia- His cardigan was auctioned off for $335,000.
The guitar a 1959 Martin D-18E was auctioned off for $6.1 million, the most ever for any guitar. The same model and year usually will sell for around $5000
Great video! I would love to have seen Bowie watching that for the first time. RIP Bowie & Kurt.
If art is in any sense to convey emotions, then Cobain is desolation turned masterpiece
Nirvana and Alice in Chains' Unplugged sets are in a masterclass of their own.
As great as the original version is, I actually prefer this cover to Bowie's original. There's just something about Kurt's delivery in this.
Beth is truly is the best at understanding music.
Spot on.
BETHROARES U THE BEST
Love the Lil’ Rraawr at the end of your intro 😆…
You should do a video about his cover of "Where did you sleep las night". This song I feel like it really shows Kurt's vocals at their peak of strength. They played it on the unplugged MTV set
I would love to hear a reaction to the whole Unplugged show, and I am willing to bet I am not the only one. Given the length and difficulty because of that, I would willingly pay for it as well.
I remember either Dave or Krist once said that Kurt was assigned a vocal coach by their label who was gonna help him with singing in a healthy way. The guy sent Kurt voice warmup tapes/videos/CDs/idk of himself going "MIMIMIMI LALALALA etc." wich Kurt showed to the rest of the band and they were dying of laughter.
Your right Beth, he sings almost country, amazing voice
Hi Beth! Worth checking out the last song from this set: Where did you sleep last night? Lots of good Cobain vocals there (inasmuch as he's terribly imperfect, but emotes so beautifully)
Simon LeBon of Duran Duran did that little yodel a TON also at the beginning of lines.
The technique he's using, that "mini yodel" is just an octave flip into falsetto... I do it sometimes moving to the last word of a phrase as a way to save breath (I'm only starting vocal lessons at 40 lol)
Always loved this song. Never heard any version other than Bowie until a few years ago when I heard Cobain cover it ... He did it justice. He sings it just like Bowie, but ... very Cobainy.
Wow I was just watching your Lithium reaction then I searched up Nirvana reaction and boom its you!
"Where did you sleep last night" please!! the very very best best!!!!
Hello Beth 🌹 two possible reactions for you and both perforners I think you find have distinctive voices are Blues Traveler's John Popper from New Jersey singing Run-Around and/or The Crash Test Dummies Bradley Roberts from Winnipeg singing mmmm mmmm mmmm. Keep doing your thing Beth! Much love and respect!
John Popper and Ziggy Marley also did an amazing version of No Woman No Cry that really showcases Poppers voice. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't!
You are right in that it was foreshadowing. Look at the set. Funeral with all the lilies and candles. I think I read he was jonesing during this but still probably his best performance.
Kurt's little guitar solo at the end, so simple yet so effective
That guy who shouted is forever in rock mythology 🤟
Thanks for acknowledging Lulu's version! 8-)
The song is awesome, you're awesome.. have an awesome day !
I've always been torn on which is best between the unplugged and Live and Loud versions, but I also think it depends on the occasion between the two. I do believe both serve as the purpose of knowing how much emotion Kurt is putting into singing the song. Unplugged gives that personal feeling, but I know when Kurt sings the Live and Loud version, I get just as emotional if not more, because of him doing the screaming in matching with the solo at the end. Either way, it does hit me in the feels.
Love to see you react to Bowie’s live version from SNL as well.
You are so pretty and I love your accent
More nirvana please 🙏👏❤️
Would love to see your thoughts on plateau and where did you sleep last night from this set
Great work as always Beth! Could you do a review of Alexander O’Neil -If you were hear tonight.x
Thank you for reacting to my Favorite Song of all time "The Man Who Sold The World" Kurt Cobain Nirvana (MTV UNPLUGGED)❤
Maybe the most beautiful cover ever recorded...
@6:04 Nice edit to share that!
nice video, you should react to paranoid android glastonbury 2003!
the song always reminds me of the faceless man in an the scifi/horror tv show Sapphire and Steel which was also influenced by the poem Antigonish
This is an excellent video. I like your idea about 5:24 “it’s almost country” 😮 cry break
Would love to see your reaction to their performance of Where Did You Sleep Last Night from that show. I initially came on here though to request your reaction to Joan Osborne doing Right Hand Man on The Late Show with David Letterman in 1995. Thanks. :)
You gotta react to Nirvana where did you sleep last night - unplugged It’s iconic and I think you would like it
Beth, please reaction, nirvana smells like teen spirit live at paramount💓
I always thought the same, this song remains haunted for me.
I imagined David Bowie singing this, different rhythm, and it is awesome. Don’t know why I haven’t done it before
Вы прекрасны в своей непосредственности и эмоциях!
Probably my favourite Nirvana song and my second favourite version of this song (no disrespect to Bowie, one of the all-time greats, but my favourite version if this song will also be the tribute by Michael Stipe).
Ok Beth, so now you HAVE to review the David Bowie live version he does on 'A Reality Tour', to give everyone who doesn't know the original version a comparison and break down!
Well you don't HAVE to, I'm just being cheeky. It would be nice to see you compare the 2 live versions though :)
I would love to hear you do Gordon lightfoot please
You gotta do some hank Williams, any of the family either sr, jr or hank 3. All unique voices or even Waylon Jennings.
Nirvana forever!!!
Por favor pon subtitulado en español 🙏 buen video saludos desde Mendoza Argentina 🇦🇷
If you haven't already done it - Where Did You Sleep Last Night from the same show. There's no way that's healthy :D
