I'm a chemist, so science questions are right up my alley! As you most likely know, the hard gel curing is a polymerization reaction, started by the ultraviolet light. Polymerization reactions are generally reactions where the product of the reaction is much more energetically favourable than your starting material. That means that the small, "high energy" monomers react to large, "low energy" polymers. The excess energy is released as heat.
Now, hard gel specifically will get hot for several reason. For one, in comparison to acrylic, it has more reacting to do. WIth acrylic powder you use monomer to crosslink already large, low energy molecules into even larger polymers. WIth gel, you will start only with small molecules. So a lot more energy get's released. Second, in comparison to soft gel, hard gel is much more viscous. And the higher the viscosity of your material, the harder it is for the heat to distribute and dissipate. The control of the heat of a polymerization reaction is actually an important problem in chemical reaction engineering.
Generally, the curing time is chosen by the manufacturer of the product to be long enough to start enough reactions so that every monomer has reacted to be part of a larger polymer. Not all reactions start at once. By taking the finger out of the lamp for a short time, your client will interrupt this process, the heat can dissipate, and when your client feels it's cooled down enough they can restart the process by putting their finger back under the lamp.
So yeah, lot's of science going on in your nail salon.
Aina R. Science isn't my strongest subject (and the fact that I'm in seventh grade) meant that I didn't understand all of that but I enjoyed reading it anyway. Yeah there is a lot of chemistry going on in the salon.
cool comment :D
Haha nice. I was waiting for Camera man's response to her question. 😄
Aina R. I am so proud of myself by understanding and following everything you said. All those years of school paid off 😂
Aina R. science rules!
OMG! you should do coy fish acrylics and put gel over it so it looks like its swimming in water!!! like if you agree
That's a cool Idea!
Nail Career Education I'm still waiting for this design!!!
Yes pleeeease
Koi**
I love how into the glitter Cameraman was! 💙💙😉
When Suzie puts dem glasses on, you know she means business! ! :-D
I silently cry while watching this because a guitarist can never have this beauty on their nails, not me at least ...
*touches the screen* ... goals :")
I love how your husband really enjoys what you do and encourages you
and i love the inlay so much, but i feel like the glitter took away from the beautiful flowers.
Caitlin Minor ~ it's not her husband 💕
kendal scott she said it was hun
im sorry, i did not know.
I was going to say sounds like it might be her husband and I guessed right what a supporter. a one thing about a man they are all in if they know it's going to be worth while and this is definitely something worth while and his camera skills are good
This is soooo beautiful it has that nice floral/angelic look to it . And the glitter really added some BAMMM to it .
I'm not a nail professional, found your videos after looking into my first set of acrylics and I have to say, you're an amazing artist and your voice is so soothing! I've been binge watching and I'm hooked :D
I swear there is nothing more relaxing than watching some of Suzie's videos after a long day
I love watching suzy do all the different nails, she is my favourite
Aww! I love how cameraman was like o wow! It's quite dazzling! He's so cute!! I just love how he really enjoys watching Suzie and watching the nail process how it comes to life! It's so amazing!
I stumbled upon your page and now i am so addicted to it. This flower inlay series is beautiful. I can't wait for more videos. You have such a wonderful presence about you and you're a joy to watch.
Thank YOU😀
I'd never want to get my nails done by you.... Now that i got your attention, it's because I wouldn't want to stop talking to you or leave haha! love you suzie
Ms. Suzie, you have one of the most precious, beautiful personalities I've ever encountered! Of course, your nail videos are inspiring, but you yourself are fabulous! Thank you for your channel!
Never too much glitter!!! But you are so wonderfully talented and good at what you do. Not to mention that you also take the time to learn your craft and always evolving. It just shows you love what you which is wonderful! I enjoy watching your videos so much!
Oh my god. Am I the only one who like gets so excited when the guitar strings come up in the music? I guess it's just a "soothing" thing going on, but her voice and the music she uses during the process makes me SUPER calm. It's amazing. I love her videos.
I love how the glitter compliments the flowers that it's near it look either yellow or green depending on the flower 😍
Fav so far has been the acrylic coffins! They just look so elegant and remind me of spring! 😍
I will love for someone who can make my nails that pretty! You are the best!
This is beautiful. I can imagine a gorgeous bridal set with white flowers and a french or maybe lace stamping.
Love how cameraman is always fully into it!❤
I love how you're doing more gel videos! I hate working with acrylic because of the smell, and I like the thinness and flexibility of hard sculptured gel nails! Thanks Suzie!!
In case someone hasn't mentioned it, the reason why gel can heat up is because the gel is in fact "cooking" under the light. The ticker the gel, the more chances of high heat and potential for accidental burning. The reason why it stops heating after you take it out and let it breath a little, is because most of the gel has cured during the first few seconds and therefore the rest of the curing won't heat as much.
thanks
Aint there some non heat gels? But I think they cure matte. Well anyhow... Thanky you Suzie for another great video, Im currently awating my dried flowers to arrive and I also plan to dry my own flowers in spring. Must get a collection to make lots of inlays!
Bodil Svensson, I haven't seen any, but I guess there must be some out there. Of course, just like odorless monomer, it probably isn't the best or most ideal to work with. Personally, I prefer working in layers on my client to prevent the overheating. It takes longer to do, but it ends up more precise and the client doesn't get that heat feeling. Make sure there is enough layers tho on the stress points of sculpted nails or it will crack/break off. And of course, you're always better to over-cure than under-cure :)
To expand on that a little, both acrylic and gel harden through a chemical reaction. The gel reaction is a little more exothermic (creates heat) than the acrylic reaction, especially in the first 10 seconds or so. The more (thicker) gel, the more heat. Different gels produce slightly different amounts of heat. Light Elegance (the brand Suzie is using in this video, and my personal favorite) makes one called Cool Gel Lexy Line that is supposed to throw off less heat. As it is about the only LE product I haven't used, I can't say for sure how well that works, but a number of people swear by it. #LERocks
Thanks for the extra info! I didn't know the exact term of the reaction
And now I do ^_^ #themoreyouknow
As soon as I get ur notification I stop what I'm doing and watch it
LPS Life Squad me too
LPS Life Squad same here !!
LPS Life Squad same
LPS Life Squad I do the same lol. I don't even get my nails done but I love watching the artistry involved in her work.
Same with me! I have never in my life gotten acrylic nails, I WANT THEM SO BAD!!!!!! but I don't think in old enough, I'm only 9!
btw...they are gorgeous!!! You can NEVER have too much glitter!
Never can have too much glitter. Beautiful nails.
I adore those colors! They remind me of forest fairies, I can never get enough of greens and yellows with sparkle and maybe some other pastels mixed in. Love your creative mind!
I don't think there's a better Nail Expert on the internet than you.. I absolutely love your designs!!
Could you do an acrylic design with dark green / forest-y colours? That would be awesome. I feel like dark green colours are seriously underrated in the nail art world :
Gosh...i loveeee watching her do nails.....i am a lil.obsessed...lol
They are beautiful! You can NEVER have too much glitter!!! I REALLY wish I lived closer cause I would LOVE to take your class!!!!!!
beautiful as usual. one can never have too much glitter! thank you suzie

Kristin Terry he is gross
Kristin Terry Yes I love Grant too! He's so fun and nice. I also love watching Suzie work on people in general. It's interesting.
amanda hall Why are you saying that?!
I had no idea that gel and acrylic would work that well together...I just learned something. Very Cool, thank you!
i feel like the glitter kind of overpowered the flowers
+
Ya it did.
Cassandra Burnop i agree.. but the design still looked good
I disagree, I think it was just the right amount of glitter :)
BUT... she likes it... That's what matters.
I'm pretty much teaching myself acrylics and gel nails. Your videos are a big help and you explain things so well. Thank you and I look forward to more of your videos.
I wanna live near you so I can get my nails done
K.A.D. Original same
pink penguin No way, I thought she was like somewhere northeast of America
pink penguin Well I guess I have to move to Canada for a while
I really want nails like this but I don't think my local nail techs have the capability
Hi Suzie, I just LOVE your channel! I recently decided to change my career and become a nail tech. I completed my studies only a few months ago and you have helped a lot with the practical side of my business, THANK YOU!
I noticed in this video and some of the others you talk about needing to understand the technical aspects of gel curing so I thought I would share some of what I know ;)
The reason some clients complain about gel burning when it cures is because Hard Gels cure from the bottom up. The heat generated in the curing process is therefore concentrated on the nail plate, this sensation can be aggravated by the following: Week or damaged nails or when the gel has been applied to thick. The benefits of curing from the bottom up is that you can take the nail out of the lamp for a few seconds. Soft gels, however, cure from the top down and if the curing process is interrupted the layer that is cured on top will prevent the rest of the nail from curing. This is also why it is better to work thin with these types of gel.
Thanks again - Shannon
That's is So helpful , thank you for sharing 💜
I love your work. I don't even do my nails but I can't stop watching your videos !! your passion for what you do is so heart-warming and adorable. 😊😊😊
LOVE THIS!!! There is no such thing as too much glitter. 😊😊😊😊.... I so need to invest in that brand. They have some awesome new drill bits AND it's all pink AND most of the products smell like cotton candy 🤗🤗🤗💖💖💖💖😍😍😍
Who doesn't Iike cotton candy 😀
Qubilah Harden you really shouldn't use drills on your nails
Jessica Thomas that company has safety bits that are designed for cuticles. I have watched videos of them in use. Because of the constant state of my cuticles, I could benefit from the extra help. I did learn in school that e-files are a NO NO for natural nails. I personally don't use them. And as of now I'm only doing my nails so I enjoy using a file.
Qubilah Harden what I ment was that you shouldn't use them because they tear off layers of you nails there for making them thin and weak. Also the drill causes natural oils and such to be striped away from your nail. All of these things prevent healthy and strong nails. That is why you shouldn't use drills on your nails.
Jessica Thomas I understood what you meant. I am not trying to be rude by saying this but I am a Licensed Tech and know the do's & don'ts of drills. I do appreciate the information. I was just pointing out that this particular company sells a bit that is specifically designed to be gentle on the nail and cuticle area while taking away the dead skin. I was saying for me, I would like to try it because I am constantly pushing, nipping and applying cream to my cuticles. When I was servicing clients with artificial nails, I didn't use a drill on them because they were turned off from it because of their experience from other shops. There are no blacks, let alone Americans that do nails in my city so it was hard to earn their trust concerning the drill. Long story short, I wear acrylic nails and I don't currently use a drill.
acrylic takes about 30 seconds before you can't manipulate it anymore, about one to two mins before you can file it but it actually takes a full 24 - 48 hrs to completely cure. so it's actually a very slow process. hard gel on the other hand fully cures in the very short amount of time it's in the light, because of this you can get a heat spike and it's actually very dangerous. people's fingers can actually blister quite severely underneath the nail. To prevent a heat spike turn your curing light on but place the fingers outside of it (so it's in the glow near the opening of the light) leave it there for about 20-30 seconds before moving the hand underneath the light. Having the light not as strong as quickly slows the beginning of the reaction which prevents the gel from curing so fast that it could burn the client.
LOVE you! You are the best nail artist!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
You're so graceful with the brush🌹🌷 You must really absolutely love what you do 🌻💐 You're an inspiration🌼🌸
I loooove the pail pinkness of the things in this video from your shirt to your nails to your nail things. I LOVE IT. And I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS 💕💕💕💕 that nail color is just perfect!!
Thank you Kim- I love PINK
Petition to get the camera man's nails done
AppleA113 - that would so cute and @ least we'dV get to see what he looks like... is that would be something
Suzie! I was always so against acrylic nails for the longest time, but you inspired me to go get some and I absolutely love them, there's so much space to be creative on my own!
As always - such lovely work. And i could listen to your voice all day.
You have no idea how much I want her to do my nails ❤️
I really enjoy your videos I don't really do my nails that often just enjoy seeing the different techniques that you use different styles and different trends to I just love to watch your videos so fun to see the ending results😂 any who can't wait for more!
The flowers have so beautifoul coloures
Your videos are just so aesthetically pleasing to watch! I'm always in awe of the reveal shots and just the overall technique behind each design. Love it! :)
I think we'd all love to see a Q and A with you or cameraman or the both of you together.
Thank you Suzy I'm very glad to watching your video. Today I made hybrid acrylic gel real flower it's awesome 👍🏻👍🏻👌👌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I learn lots of things from your video. Thanks 🙏 u
It reminded me of beauty & the beast!
Wonderful work, Suzie!
I have no intention of ever trying to recreate any of the tutorials you do (I have a disability that causes me to have extremely shaky hands, but I used to love doing my nails) , I just love to watch because you seem like such a genuinely lovely person. I always look forward to your next video after I watch the latest one. Thank you to you AND Cameraman for keeping me entertained and happy 😘 xxx
The flowers need soaked overnight. They don't take to the liquid as soon as one expects. Great imagery, Grant knows his business and so does Suzie! I live for the final moment and feel they should be a tad longer. A nice snapshot takes time to admire!
Amazing Suzie!!! You are wonderful!!!😘💗
I love this playlist❤. I've never been overly interested in using flowers 🌺 in nails before but now I think I'd like to
give them a try. I always wore a squoval shape nail too but since watching your tutorials I'm now sporting a lovely long almond shape 😄
You're so much more than a nail technician, you're an artist!! I absolutely love your videos! I'm not a nail tech but you give me so many ideas to do my own nails and your videos are so great and in depth, I can't wait to try to do the dried flowers in gel nails!
I can't wait to try out the hybrid nail! I've got gel, but I'm waiting for my acrylic to get here. Your videos help out sooooo much when it comes down to techniques, styles, and other super important skills with doing professional nails. Thank you Suzie!
i love your videos. i dont want to learn how to apply acrylic nails! i just love watching before i go to bed.
OMG I love how you come up with so many awesome techniques and designs
I'm excited for Christmas nails again. I really like the flowers! Have a great week 😁
This is the third time I watch this... I'll watch it once more this weekend before attempting it for the first time... hope it turns out well.

I just love your educational videos Suzie, you're the best teacher ever. Please let us all know if you ever come to Las Vegas.
I hope to go this summer to the International Beauty Show. I will remember to mention in a video to let you know😃
honestly suzie these are so relaxing, you're really an artist. also, it was too much glitter but it came out dazzling so i can't even say i'm mad.
Your hands down one of the most talented people i know! ily
Im just about to start a Nail course, so have been watching all your videos. Cant wait to get stated.
How exciting - keep me posted - love to know how your enjoying it 💜
This is super cool
Love this!!!! You and "Camera man" crack me up. Beautiful nails Susie!
I just got a blood test and I am very scared of needles. After I came home your voice helped calm me down. Thanks! I watch videos all the time and paint my nails, since its cold on the part of the north island that I live on and it always rains so I don't really get to go outside that much. Thanks again!
I have watched all of your videos
I became interested in doing nails and have my own LED lamp and gel polishes I started with; I recently stumbled upon your videos and have now applied to a salon academy in my home state! I have talked to them and will be attending in the fall of 2017!! I am so very excited to become a nail technician. I will also be able to do this part time in the evenings to get my nail technology certification while attending an academic university. Love your videos!!
😲 Omg this is beautiful, keep working hard Suzie
You are awesome, thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us.
Thanks for all of your amazing designs . Kisses from Mexico
Beautiful!!
More glitter, I love glitter!💖
The inside of the gel container looks like a pretty cool design, couple that with gel and it'll look really nice on a hand with a black backdrop
Lol - yes a few glitters escaped
Nail Career Education lol and they sank to the bottom. that's funny
I love your videos they are very informative. I have learnt so much from you I'm currently training to be a nail technician and hopefully will be able to create beautiful nails like you do. My tutor says we can't do hard gel over acrylic but thanks to you I know different. I did hybrid nails on myself and I loved it.
it's noticeable that you prefer working with acrylics because you apply gel a little bit like acrylics and you're so fascinated by gel hehe :)
Beautiful and relaxing 💚💛💜
I love your videos so much I wish you made them more often.
With as many hours as just one video takes our cameraman, we are lucky he commits the time and effort for us to get the one each week. Thank you, cameraman!
JayKB I know I was just saying. I love her videos so much that I would love more.
Absolutely gorgeous
Your voice is perfect! Love these videos. :)
I'm obsessed with the nail form method versus the traditional tip method! I plan on starting beauty school next May 2017 and I want to do nails. I'm going to get acrylic nail set hopefully for Christmas and hopefully get into learning how to do gel before I start.
I love watching your videos because you explain everything in a way I can understand.
can't wait for the next video!
