    I'm a chemist, so science questions are right up my alley! As you most likely know, the hard gel curing is a polymerization reaction, started by the ultraviolet light. Polymerization reactions are generally reactions where the product of the reaction is much more energetically favourable than your starting material. That means that the small, "high energy" monomers react to large, "low energy" polymers. The excess energy is released as heat.
    Now, hard gel specifically will get hot for several reason. For one, in comparison to acrylic, it has more reacting to do. WIth acrylic powder you use monomer to crosslink already large, low energy molecules into even larger polymers. WIth gel, you will start only with small molecules. So a lot more energy get's released. Second, in comparison to soft gel, hard gel is much more viscous. And the higher the viscosity of your material, the harder it is for the heat to distribute and dissipate. The control of the heat of a polymerization reaction is actually an important problem in chemical reaction engineering.
    Generally, the curing time is chosen by the manufacturer of the product to be long enough to start enough reactions so that every monomer has reacted to be part of a larger polymer. Not all reactions start at once. By taking the finger out of the lamp for a short time, your client will interrupt this process, the heat can dissipate, and when your client feels it's cooled down enough they can restart the process by putting their finger back under the lamp.
    So yeah, lot's of science going on in your nail salon.

      Aina R. Science isn't my strongest subject (and the fact that I'm in seventh grade) meant that I didn't understand all of that but I enjoyed reading it anyway. Yeah there is a lot of chemistry going on in the salon.

  • @missmashvideos

    In case someone hasn't mentioned it, the reason why gel can heat up is because the gel is in fact "cooking" under the light. The ticker the gel, the more chances of high heat and potential for accidental burning. The reason why it stops heating after you take it out and let it breath a little, is because most of the gel has cured during the first few seconds and therefore the rest of the curing won't heat as much.

      Bodil Svensson, I haven't seen any, but I guess there must be some out there. Of course, just like odorless monomer, it probably isn't the best or most ideal to work with. Personally, I prefer working in layers on my client to prevent the overheating. It takes longer to do, but it ends up more precise and the client doesn't get that heat feeling. Make sure there is enough layers tho on the stress points of sculpted nails or it will crack/break off. And of course, you're always better to over-cure than under-cure :)

    • @bonniew1992
      @bonniew1992 7 років тому +13

      To expand on that a little, both acrylic and gel harden through a chemical reaction. The gel reaction is a little more exothermic (creates heat) than the acrylic reaction, especially in the first 10 seconds or so. The more (thicker) gel, the more heat. Different gels produce slightly different amounts of heat. Light Elegance (the brand Suzie is using in this video, and my personal favorite) makes one called Cool Gel Lexy Line that is supposed to throw off less heat. As it is about the only LE product I haven't used, I can't say for sure how well that works, but a number of people swear by it. #LERocks

    Hi Suzie, I just LOVE your channel! I recently decided to change my career and become a nail tech. I completed my studies only a few months ago and you have helped a lot with the practical side of my business, THANK YOU!
    I noticed in this video and some of the others you talk about needing to understand the technical aspects of gel curing so I thought I would share some of what I know ;)
    The reason some clients complain about gel burning when it cures is because Hard Gels cure from the bottom up. The heat generated in the curing process is therefore concentrated on the nail plate, this sensation can be aggravated by the following: Week or damaged nails or when the gel has been applied to thick. The benefits of curing from the bottom up is that you can take the nail out of the lamp for a few seconds. Soft gels, however, cure from the top down and if the curing process is interrupted the layer that is cured on top will prevent the rest of the nail from curing. This is also why it is better to work thin with these types of gel.
    Thanks again - Shannon

      Qubilah Harden you really shouldn't use drills on your nails

    • @QubilahHarden
      @QubilahHarden 7 років тому +4

      Jessica Thomas that company has safety bits that are designed for cuticles. I have watched videos of them in use. Because of the constant state of my cuticles, I could benefit from the extra help. I did learn in school that e-files are a NO NO for natural nails. I personally don't use them. And as of now I'm only doing my nails so I enjoy using a file.

    • @jessicathomas9699
      @jessicathomas9699 7 років тому

      Qubilah Harden what I ment was that you shouldn't use them because they tear off layers of you nails there for making them thin and weak. Also the drill causes natural oils and such to be striped away from your nail. All of these things prevent healthy and strong nails. That is why you shouldn't use drills on your nails.

    • @QubilahHarden
      @QubilahHarden 7 років тому +10

      Jessica Thomas I understood what you meant. I am not trying to be rude by saying this but I am a Licensed Tech and know the do's & don'ts of drills. I do appreciate the information. I was just pointing out that this particular company sells a bit that is specifically designed to be gentle on the nail and cuticle area while taking away the dead skin. I was saying for me, I would like to try it because I am constantly pushing, nipping and applying cream to my cuticles. When I was servicing clients with artificial nails, I didn't use a drill on them because they were turned off from it because of their experience from other shops. There are no blacks, let alone Americans that do nails in my city so it was hard to earn their trust concerning the drill. Long story short, I wear acrylic nails and I don't currently use a drill.

  • @jaymidolan-mcgrath7559
    @jaymidolan-mcgrath7559 7 років тому +4

    acrylic takes about 30 seconds before you can't manipulate it anymore, about one to two mins before you can file it but it actually takes a full 24 - 48 hrs to completely cure. so it's actually a very slow process. hard gel on the other hand fully cures in the very short amount of time it's in the light, because of this you can get a heat spike and it's actually very dangerous. people's fingers can actually blister quite severely underneath the nail. To prevent a heat spike turn your curing light on but place the fingers outside of it (so it's in the glow near the opening of the light) leave it there for about 20-30 seconds before moving the hand underneath the light. Having the light not as strong as quickly slows the beginning of the reaction which prevents the gel from curing so fast that it could burn the client.

    I just got a blood test and I am very scared of needles. After I came home your voice helped calm me down. Thanks! I watch videos all the time and paint my nails, since its cold on the part of the north island that I live on and it always rains so I don't really get to go outside that much. Thanks again!

    I became interested in doing nails and have my own LED lamp and gel polishes I started with; I recently stumbled upon your videos and have now applied to a salon academy in my home state! I have talked to them and will be attending in the fall of 2017!! I am so very excited to become a nail technician. I will also be able to do this part time in the evenings to get my nail technology certification while attending an academic university. Love your videos!!

    I love your videos they are very informative. I have learnt so much from you I'm currently training to be a nail technician and hopefully will be able to create beautiful nails like you do. My tutor says we can't do hard gel over acrylic but thanks to you I know different. I did hybrid nails on myself and I loved it.

    it's noticeable that you prefer working with acrylics because you apply gel a little bit like acrylics and you're so fascinated by gel hehe :)

    I'm obsessed with the nail form method versus the traditional tip method! I plan on starting beauty school next May 2017 and I want to do nails. I'm going to get acrylic nail set hopefully for Christmas and hopefully get into learning how to do gel before I start.
    I love watching your videos because you explain everything in a way I can understand.
    can't wait for the next video!
