Relaxing TELEPHOTO Lens Swamp Landscape Photography

- The Texas Bayou is incredible for landscape photography but can be quite challenging to capture. In this video, I share a new technique that allowed me to get sharp and clean long exposures while still in a canoe. I also attempt to teach Gavin Hardcastle a bit of telephoto photography, which went about as well as your would expect. I really hope you enjoy watching it!

Thanks everyone for watching. Do you tend to capture darker more dramatic images or brighter high key scenes? Please let me know below. 👇
I've fallen more into event photography: car shows, ren fairs, friends/family gatherings . . . etc. So the two main factors that affect me are the physical space I have to work with (indoor vs outdoor) and the time of day/lighting conditions. So, for example, with an indoor event, a 24-70/2.8 is essential to deal with limited space, but it also has the option to have a greater focal length at the turn of a ring.
For me, it'll depend on the particular scene and the conditions. I might gravitate to a high key image in a sunny desert or beach scene but a misty forest wet cityscape calls for a darker, more dramatic image IMO.
I live in the pac NW. So darker, moodier images seem to be what I capture most. But gonna get some wildflowers in golden light this summer if it kills me! 😁
Amazing images, I’m loving this series. Of course I love the banter between you and Gavin too 😂
I love your video and your work. I do a lot of photography in the swamps from a kayak here in Florida and I have a technique that I can use a tripod setup for a long exposures without putting my tripod in the water with certain compositions. Other times I use self made custom tripod extension legs for really deep water. Being in an unsteady boat photographing is a real challenge and it is easy to forget where you are.
Watching your videos has opened my eyes to focusing on details instead of just a wide open scene. Thanks for all the tips!! I tend to gravitate more towards darker images for my photos but enjoy seeing brighter ones as well. I really love your bayou photos ♥️
You are welcome Tara, thanks for watching and supporting my work! Agreed, I tend to shoot a little darker and more dramatic as well.

I love the water reflection shot too. One of my all time favorites of yours. Great seeing you volly dry humor with Gavin! Haven’t seen this side of you before. You do it well! And make pretty good pictures too! 😉 Thanks Michael!!
Your swamp photos are some of my favorites! So good my man! I appreciate how difficult this video must have been to film - don’t know how you managed to pull it all off!
Thanks Mark, hope all is well man!
Doesn't matter where you take your images, you are way better than the other ones. Every competition has to have a winner and the winner is, you Michael. How you see and compose your images even your cliches have some spice sprinkled over them which makes them stand out.
Wonderful images Michael. I really like the tighter shots where you isolate the branches.
Your mastery of the technical and your creative vision leaves me in equal measure inspired and depressed. You apparently can create stunning images anywhere! Thanks for sharing with us.
Fantastic photos, Michael! I had to cancel a trip to photograph cypress in the swamps several years ago but now I’m glad I saw your video first. I probably wouldn’t have thought to use a tripod from a canoe. Thanks for sharing another great video.
I need to try the long exposure technique. Thanks for sharing it.
I was waiting for the gator to grab you or a ball of water moccasins to float into you in the last half :/ haha. Absolutely beautiful images and interesting helpful video, as always. Thanks for sharing!
Your photos are incredibly stunning! I really like the one at 4 min 50 seconds. Personally I prefer the one that have a darker background. The abstract is also one of my favorite! So beautiful!
Amazing skills of photography & the way you describe is wonderful! Best of luck! 😍✌️✨
Only recently discovered your channel and your stuff is SO UNIQUE AND AMAZING!! KEEP IT UP MAN
Hey thanks so much! :)
Wow, I love the one @ 14:53, the light from upper left to lower right. You asked about high-key or drama, and I think I most often enjoy the dramatic images, but diversity is the spice of life. Safe travels!
I gravitate to darker moods myself. Looks like I'm off to East Texas in the Near future! Wonderful work!
Just love the abstract so beautiful 🤩. That shot would have looked great on the wall. Thanx for the video. Greatings from Norway
this shot session is pure magic
It's been a long time since I've been hooked to a YT channel this way - and I just discovered yours an hour ago. I remember you from a nigel dansen critique and admired your humility and insight - but I didn't see your own work until today. The last photographer who resonated with me this way is probably Sam Abell. Your an inspiration man.
Incredible photos. Amazingly, how nature creates such a beautiful landscapes.
you are a brutally good photographer. maybe the best I know. wow.
Thank you for your inspiring images. As for your question on my images I tend to go darker. Something I need to explore is going lighter as well.
Masterful photography! So glad I came across your channel and look forward to more of your videos.
I love this series, Michael, such beautiful images! 30 second LE in water, now that’s beast mode activated 😎
Spectacular long exposure images! They look magical, beautiful and so mysterious. You are very brave for standing in those waters.
Thanks so much!
Top quality vblog as usual and very nice pictures aswell.
Incredible shots, the colors and composition are spot on. Did a shoot there last year, can`tr wait to go back and try some of your techniques!
Inspired by this video a lot! You discovered so many ways to make these shots compelling and painterly.
Absolutely amazing thanks for sharing I am a photographer from Kamloops B.C Canada I go to bed at 630 pm and wake up at 2 am every day and I take photos every day before I start work
Damn that is so awesome to hear, keep going!
What a beautiful place. Love your photos....
Amazing video. You captured some awesome images and you are so brave taking your camera out in a canoe, lol. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and adventures with us.
Outstanding, surreal and phenomenal results 👏
Brilliant photos. I am enjoying watching from Manchester, UK.
O what a location! Many lovely images.
your swamp fotos (as your other fotos as well) are really impressive, the depth you have created, the colors, etc. Can explain and / or make a tutorial how you have edited them ?
Beautiful location well shot.
Wet woodland is a better term than swamp for these stunning images. The cypress tress are stunning and my personal favorites. Thanks!
Thanks so much Jim!
Besides all the phenomenal photos, i thoroughly enjoy you and Gavin doing this. I hope it's not another 4 years till the next outing. And i tend to lean more towards the darker more dramatic photographs.
Great Vlog, amazing images!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Simply beautiful images!
Phenominal Photography - even with Gavin bothering you !
I like both high key and dark shots. I make the decision on which way I go based on how a specific scene speaks to me.
Achingly beautiful and mysterious. I’d really like to go there one day.
The colors in your images are so rich! Well done, Michael...thanks for bringing us along. Have you noticed - Gavin's lost a little weight. ;)
Superb images and an enjoyable video.
Love all the images! Thank you for sharing!
Some really interesting and beautiful photos.
Amazing shots!
This I really beautiful Michael. You are a magician! Thanks for your efforts.
Thanks so much Richard!
Brilliant content, thank you.
Stunning images!
Many thanks!
Outstanding images!
Oh, a much, much, much better video than Gavin's. When he was wading in the water, there were too many bubbles coming from his waders. :) But seriously, I've got to go back there in the fall now. I missed those colors. What month were you there?
stunning!
Absolutely Amazing
These videos inspired me to get Canon 100-400mm L II. It was worth the investment
Beautiful pics...but man ever time your hand came off the camera with the tripod in the water I may have held my breath a little. Egret-ated...genius! 🤣
Such fabulous photography!
Thanks David!
I prefer darker and dramatic images. So interesting how you and Gavin are at the same place at the same time but get different images. Don't tell Gavin but I think I prefer your images. Where in Texas is this bayou?
Definitely lean towards darker images. Your long exposure shots were excellent. Might have to have a go at using longer shutter speeds.
Just amazing photography Michael. You inspire me in every video and your photography is right in my lane with the mix of abstracts. You have great vision. As far as which type of shots I prefer, there was so much there I loved, same problem I have in the field, what should I concentrate on today? I find your high and low key shots beautiful because if the color, light and composition! Very fine, thank you so much!
Thanks so much for the kind words! :) Its tough to find a focus, but I think part of that makes it fun haha.
Might have to make that 3-hour drive up from Houston, as I have not visited since 2016.
What a eerie place.
Haha yeah it does have a bit of an eerie vibe, super peaceful though.
Another great video bud! I think I do prefer the dark more mysterious images but also the high key images do work well with the harsher light
Thanks Tom!
Top drawer buddy... some incredible shots from this one
Thanks so much man!
Love the abstract images ❤️
Thanks Thomas!
Yes cypress trees do turn in the fall and give off nice reflections.
absolutely love the one at 3:19
..more than a few excellent images..love the more abstract....for sure i now have swamp fever ..only cure i know of is to go
Thanks so much! Definitely go!
Hello Michel, excellent video and amazing photos, can you tell me what that place is called and where it is?
Great video! I adore what you've captured and you provided some really helpful information.
Thanks so much Mandy, really glad the info was valuable!
I definitely enjoy low key images better. Great video! 👍🏽
I do have a preference for darker images...wondering how a starry shot with some light painting on the trees would turn out
Beautiful images as always
Thank you!
Amazing video 🔝👏🏻
Thank you 🙌
Great video :) I really like how the light hit the trees at the beginning. I was surprise to see you’re shooting at f16 / f18, etc. ! Is it related to the type of lens you’re using? My sony lenses are usually sharper at f8/9 and I don’t see close foreground.
Also, wouldn’t iso 640 be better than 500 since your camera is probably iso invariant? Cheers!
what an amazing series of these Bayu swamp trees fall colours! Very nice. Next time sink the Phototripper boat ;-) Anyways at the moment editing lake district photo’s i tend to towards more dramatic and darker moods. Very nice vlog series. Question have you experienced with the tamron 28-200 at larger apertures and a bit more shooting in the sun perhaps some strange vignet, lens cirkels as well?
Keep up the nice work.
//Dave
This place is amazing! Where is this at?!
Off Topic question. Do you have any plans to photograph/film the total solar eclipse in April? I can see a classic MS Time-Lapse being a big hit.
Incredible pics! What focusing mode were you using?
Thank you! Auto for the first handheld set and then manual for everything else.
Watching you stick your much-more-expensive-than-mine equipment practically in the water made me need to increase my anti-anxiety meds. Then Gavin showed up, and I needed to increase my anger-management meds… 😂
Great video! I just heard you on Fototripper’s latest video that you were born in Quebec City! I live there! Do you speak french? Do you visit?
Would you recommend taking a CP filter?
I tend to go for darker, more saturated colors.
Great job on your images. It would be nice to include your focal length when you show your photos. Might help new viewers to learn to shoot better.
What lens choices do you recommend if I can only take two with me?
I love your image at 9:23! What a mesmerizing reflection that appears painted. I want to buy a print of this, if you don't mind!
Hey, thanks so much! We can definitely do that. Shoot me an email with the details of the size you are looking for shainblumphoto@gmail.com :)
5:12 What an image. Fantastic.
So, lesson learnt here: that location requires a tripod with REALLY long legs.
You're channeling your inner Clyde Butcher. 👍
Trying my best haha, thanks so much!
You are one of my favorite photographers. But I do not leave comments. You have too many subscribers for me to feel connected to you in any way. Too many comments for you to read and reply to. I get that; the logistics of it all. But the fact remains. I give you a thumbs up and I remain subscribed. Thank you for your excellent content. You have upped my photographic game and continue to do so. Out.
Thanks so much for the continued support! I do not always see every comment, but I do my best to read as many as I can and I very much appreciate them so thank you!
@@MichaelShainblum I am quite surprised to see a response. Thank you. I am pleased to learn you do read the comments. I know it is rather a lot to go through, though.
❣❣❣
Never thought I’d have a desire to be in a swamp/bayou. Btw, is that a leofoto tripod? Looks similar to a ranger model I just got to try out.
Yeah thats the Leofoto ranger. Its a really nice tripod so far, been enjoying using it on my adventures.
@@MichaelShainblum nice, I was looking for a really tall option, so picked up the Ranger 324CL with the ballhead, but swapped out the apex for the CEX/leveling one to play around with different heads. I like it a lot so far but it’s probably much taller than I need. Might pick up a regular size one next time there is a sale.
Could you please include the focal length for each shot? It is a factor that affects your other camera settings.
All of my shots here were telephoto from about 100-200 at the start of the video and some at 400 towards the end.
The only thing settings wise that was affected was the shutter-speed which just needed to be high enough for the starting handheld shots. The focal length had minimal affect on settings for the rest of the images. I would have used the same settings shooting wide.
@@MichaelShainblum So, do you follow the double rule? 800 shutter speed for a 400 focal length? Or do you prefer to rely on the camera/lens IBIS?
Usually yeah I do the double rule and then sometimes even more if I can. In this case though I did find myself going a bit under the double rule and using IBIS with a very steady hand.
Out on your own…Gavin was probably eating BBQ ribs and sketchy olives ….. #justsaying… 😂
F16 seems too narrow than necessary when you’re photographing things on different focal planes?
nah
60/40 for darker photos
Dark and dramatic.
same here! :)
Did Gobshite Gavin learn anything at all this time? 🤣
Wonderful video and photography. Not to be picky, but you are in a kayak, not a canoe. And you are paddling with a kayak paddle, not an oar. An oar is for rowboats...or viking ships. Just saying! Love your videos!
Thanks, glad you like it, so when they gave me this one they actually called it a solo canoe, since the whole sitting area is open, but to be honest I have no clue whats what. I just took this one since it had way more space to put my entire camera back and vlog set up in. I do use a regular kayak in the next video though which I had to downsize my kit for.
