I wear the full-face version of this helmet (also in gloss white) and I love it. I chose it over the half-cut simply for the added protection. The jaw/mouth guard on my helmet has taken some serious hits which may or may not have gotten to my teeth if I didn't have it. I agree that it does make it harder for people to hear and understand me on the river, but to be honest, most people don't pay much attention to what I say anyway...haha. Best helmets made IMO.
I have the strutter and recently purchased the rocker over the winter. I love both helmets and think they both have a place in the paddlesport world. The Rocker is a better choice overall.
I have found that people are either a sweet or wrsi/other user. I think head shape plays a part in the divide, sweet fits oblong where WRSI fits round well. I prefer the half cut as the FF was too close to my cheeks and felt awkward putting on and taking off. The strutter has been delegated to light days where less chance of tipping. For me the brim acts like a scoop so I main use the rocker. And yes the green is the way to go, I too am a lemon lime color kid. Thanks for your videos and information!
Ok, I finally decided to buy the SP Rocker... at your rec' (+ the UVA study). I bought the M/L. With a head circ. of 22-1/4" or 57cm, it's definitely snug. I'll assume it opens up a bit over time? Obviously didn't need the extra pads, but if you were thinking of wearing a hat/cap underneath, consider the sizing relative to your measurements. Compared to my WRSI helmet, it's truly A LOT more supportive. The WRSI would always slide backwards and the only support is basically the under-chin (throat) strap, which is always a balance between support and choking. One thing I prefer on the WRSI is the removable liners, which I switch out and wash every time. Unsure how to remove the SP liner...
Yeah was crazy that UVA study dropped seriously a week after I made this video just proving my point even more. And I actually talked to a sweet protection rep and told him about all the comments on this video about sizes i really think there’s enough sales to justify a L/XL in today’s market seems they are loosing a lot of sales with the limited size options thanks for the feedback Mac..
The best helmet I've found. Only negative is I have split my eyebrow on a rock. I also hit the visor screws with a little blue lock tight because they will come out and you forsure don't wanna overtighten them
I appreciate you highlighting the importance of the foam liner which is mostly responsible for impact protection. WW seems to be a weird arena where there is a lot of variance in protection. A correction though, Sweet is not the only company that uses an EPP liner. Shred Ready uses EPP in their standard helmet. Palm also uses an EPP liner. I don't know if they're still around but even those weird looking cheap Predator full face helmets used EPP. WRSI uses EVA but in a multi-layer design that presumably has high impact qualities. EPS liners used for bicycling, etc. provide single impact protection and are therefore not as appropriate for WW where multi-impact protection is important. Note that Sweet does -not- use EPP in their lighter layup helmets like the Strutter. From what I've read the shell also plays a role in protection. The cheaper helmets will have ABS plastic. The composite helmets vary in what material is actually used, but if done right, they tend to use a stiffer material. The supposed advantage of the composite shell is that if there is a impact with something sharp, i.e. the impact is on a small part of the surface area of the helmet, the composite shell can better disperse the impact into a great surface area of the liner, where as the softer ABS plastic will tend put more of the force through that single impact point. So there may be a small advantage in protection from a composite shell. All that said, the Sweet Rocker is my favorite helmet as well. In my experience they put more thought into the fit of the helmet then Shred Ready and fit is going to play a huge role in protection as well. But I wanted to point out that Sweet is not the only player in the game when it comes to providing helmets with protective liners for kayaking.
Great feedback Kevin I have not looked at all brands that’s why I put the question out there I know the shred ready I have is just minicell foam but i agree with you the sweet rocker helmets are the best designed out there today for kayaking
rocker half cut with visor and keep in the earpads. on hot days i use an sr standard half cut or if i’m in an inflatable. nothing beats the rocker for comfort and protection though.
Sweet has definitely getting up to speed with helmet designs. But as far as big impact or multiple impact protection. I roll with WRSI. system features a 3 layer impact displacement shell. And I can tell you from years of experience. If I had been wearing anything else at the time of multiple incident. I probably wouldn't be here. I like Sweet, but I'm sticking with WRSI System.
I really liked the research that was put behind that helmet really was one of the first to actually try to make kayaking helmets better I owned one years ago but not since it has become a NRS helmet but will give one a look again thanks for the feedback George
@@WadeHarrison I do feel that NRS has let the quality slip. I own several older models of different kinds. I like them all. But I think the original concept is superior to some of the changes NRS has done with it.
Thanks for the tip on the Lock-Tight. I wasn't sure about the sprocket nut thing until I popped out the rubber logo on the visor. If you don't tighten the sprocket all the way, it would allow the visor to move on impact, reducing potential breakage...checking it regularly.
Simple. I got a lacrosse helmet and placed the full face mask on it and now even when I am dragging along the bottom or jammed into crevices I am completely unconcerned. I cannot describe to you how much easier it is to breathe when your nose and mouth are not crushed. By the way, I just sawed out the worst offending wood on Upper Little River above Elkmont Campground in the Smokies just outside of Gatlinburg. Wade great video and the only thing I would add is put lock tight on the screws , I do have both helmets and I ware the full face when it’s winter or really rocky
I love the helmet but unfortunately the L/XL size is too tight on my head , it’s so uncomfortable , I have a strutter but it’s more oval and fits perfect but the rocker I cannot wear due to size 😢
I just bought the Rocker in M/L and it is tight on my head. Other helmets fit me in this size but not the rocker. A friend is buying it off me as it fits him perfect. I will be buying the wanderer next week so we will see how that figment goes.
Although I also believe this is the best helmet you can buy for kayaking, I think it’s incredibly sad how Sweet essentially hasn’t updated this helmet since it’s original release. Why is there no Rocker 2.0, or why are there no signs that Sweet is designing something better for kayaking. They’ve obviously updated the paint job and maybe made a few other minor tweaks, but from what I can tell, there is basically no difference from the original. I guess the reasoning is similar to anything else in whitewater - there is not enough money in the whitewater space to justify innovation. Or maybe it’s simply because there is no competition in the whitewater helmet arena for Sweet to care. Thoughts?
Yes I agree it’s due a full upgrade to a 2.0 like you said they have done minimal tweaks like outfitting and colors but really the same design for years and after this video I see they definitely should look at a xxl version
Green, will make you go faster. I use a WRSI Current, it is bright yellow and matte finish. Price, fit, and matte finish. and has a small bill on it. Like you I don't care for full face.
Wade, almost all the people I see with rockers, do not have the visor attached - is there a reason for his (other than the hassle of attaching the visor) . is there a downside to having the visor on (eg more drag when rolling etc). They get broken off or just don’t want to fool with them and all the pros like the special paint jobs on the helmets and it throws it off with a visor 😂 I’m just guessing But really it’s probably personal preference I ran without one for a long time when mine broke and someone gave me a blue one that didn’t want so I installed it

Oh totally and this was not planned i was there paddling the river and had a chance to jump in one of these so just made due with what I had And for sure going to try to officially get back in one with a wing paddle and everything
@@WadeHarrison I agree, I definitely have a small head , for most other helmets (eg peak for polo and wrsi for WW) I am in the S/M category. I tried the rocker M/L and assumed it would be too big and I could not get on at all - L/XL was perfect. Rockers are not for people with larger (or even fairly large) heads. So anyone thinking of buying a rocker - "try before you buy".
Have it (3 years), love it, will probably never buy anything else other than replacing it with the same model. Smack my head on rocks all the time and I've not (as of yet) ever had a concussion. One complaint, and maybe they've fixed this in more recent years, is that the paint started peeling off the visor from day one, and my gopro shoe popped right off the first day on the river. Paint below it came right off the helmet. That said, I've invested a lot in my brain so I'll gladly give up some paint in exchange for a well designed helmet that protects my melon! @wade I love your point about the visor and shedding water when diving through holes and waves. I removed my visor because I lost a screw, but I'll definitely be re-mounting it and trying that technique! 👍
Yes I forgot about the paint on yours you were talking about. I should have mentioned that. maybe there was a batch of improperly applied paint that caused that? I have always got the gloss white so never been a issue. And agree there’s a lot of inventory in that head so if this is the best most shock absorbing kayak helmets out there that’s what I’m going with! Thanks for the feedback Jamie…
Perfect timing on this video, Wade! I’m in the market for a new helmet and am a big Sweet Protection fan. Currently using a Strutter but really like the Rocker setup. Really enjoyed the review and details! 🫵🤘🛶

Oh totally and this was not planned i was there paddling the river and had a chance to jump in one of these so just made due with what I had
And for sure going to try to officially get back in one with a wing paddle and everything
Half cut, full face and the strutter. Just depends how steep and how warm 😆
That’s impressive line up!
Love to get one but my head’s the size of a small planet and even the L/XL is too small. 👽
That seems to be a issue for alot of people thanks for the feedback maybe sweet should look at a XXL only helmet?
@@WadeHarrison I agree, I definitely have a small head , for most other helmets (eg peak for polo and wrsi for WW) I am in the S/M category. I tried the rocker M/L and assumed it would be too big and I could not get on at all - L/XL was perfect. Rockers are not for people with larger (or even fairly large) heads. So anyone thinking of buying a rocker - "try before you buy".
They do a xxl for skiing but I guess the paddling community is smaller so the demand isn’t there.
Noic
Yup 👍
Thanks for the feedback Jamie…
because its too small for my big head, god damn
Yeah they really should look into a XL
Perfect timing on this video, Wade! I’m in the market for a new helmet and am a big Sweet Protection fan. Currently using a Strutter but really like the Rocker setup. Really enjoyed the review and details! 🫵🤘🛶
Glad I could help buddy
@@WadeHarrison - would love to see a video on recommendations/review of breakdown paddles. Best options for a backup paddle, kayak camping, etc.
@@wolfriveroutdoors yeah I have a 4 piece break down I use but the Werner 4 piece is the best I know a guy that uses one for everything I will reach out to him
