I love the features on the Peregrine TX...For recreational divers like myself, this covers all the spots I need. The large, colored screen is easy to see. Ease of use and some degrees of customization are also great. Plus, Peregrine now comes with AI and Digital Compass too. What a great dive computer!!

This is without question the best video I have seen on dive computers. Being new to diving this is exactly what I needed, all the information clear and concise without attitude. So many I have seen are judgmental against the new diver who doesn't want to spend on a high end technical computer. Thank you for your great videos! As previously mentioned, great video guys well done. My favourite for diving warm water (holiday) dives is the Shearwater Teric. Bright clear display with plenty of dive information especially when linked to the tank pod. Its small enough to wear as standard watch also on a liveaboard for example and not having (email, text) notifications is a plus, im on holiday relaxing. Ive seen, own, used and discussed the others on the list but keep coming back to the Teric every time.

*A very new diver here but I have the bug!* looking to dive in the UK and further!
Thank you for your review its very informative especially for a newbie. Maybe for future reviews, a comparison of prices ranges would be nice to include.
I like the look of the sheerwater tern tx, especially as it has room for growth but is very practical day to day. Also it allows you to purchase the swift transmitter seperately, reducing the the initial cost, which we all know helps.
My preference also favours the screen, with an automatic backlight which I feel will help in poor visibility or darker conditions.
I would only entertain rechargeable products but that maybe due to my own hesitation with not sealing the unit back correctly.
Your review has given me food for thought regarding the dive watch and has allowed me to recognise important features from your knowledge base and my personal preferences.
Thank you, I will be watching more

      Welcome to the club!
Anything by Shearwater to be honest is a sure bet. Tern Tx and Teric Tx are both similar when it comes to that wrist watch design and the usability/menu navigation. The Teric is a little less advanced, but since you're newly certified I don't think you'll be hitting 200m (let alone Tern's 120m) any time soon 😛 Where in the UK are you diving? Did you get certified there?

I have the Garmin Descent G1(non-solar) - As someone moving towards either technical or divemaster it was a great choice (especially secondhand in great condition and very affordable). It's a big step up from my old Suunto Zoop (non-Novo! That old!).
The Descent G1 is awesome, like noted, above and below water. A close competitor to a traditional "smartwatch".
My problem and the reason I drrool over the Garmin MK3i 51mm? Presbyopia (I need reading glasses) - I just can't read the small screen fonts 1/2 the time. Having a bigger, better, brighter display will make a *huge* difference.
Ohhh, Air Integration too... like, duh! So journey progression will be towards Air Integration, and for a dedicated "smart watch" that does all of the tech diving plus everything else + air.... Clear winner for me.

Great video. My favorite is the Garmin Descent Mk3i 43mm because I dive all year round, both on vacation and in cold lakes and would use it very often.
It would also replace my Garmin Fenix 5 as an everyday watch to track my other activities like swimming, biking or running. And the Dive Computer/ watch can also record all the other activities that I do from time to time on vacation, such as skiing, sailing, windsurfing.

The Fenix 8 is obviously playing against the Apple Watch Ultra. In terms of diving they are kind of the same level with the 40m rating, no AI, no gas change. While Apple in my opinion is the better smartwatch, Garmin is more focussed on sports. So, the Fenix 8 has battery life on their side and especially no subscription model which makes it cheaper in the long run. And, as far as I know, they won’t lock you, if you drop below 40.

Good overall review with very detailed differentiators helping with ‘Who is this computer for.’ I really liked that. Thanks for showing a wide variety of price points as well as highlighting readability. I have some older pucks and a Peregrine TX. The readability and ease of use on the Shearwaters is amazing and consistent across their entire line and I would buy another like a Perdix or Teric if I wanted to do more Tec diving. The actual battery life was a unique group test and some great data with a few big surprises. You also nailed why so many are hesitant on the Apple Watch - the lockout potential kept me away…. The subscription deters many unnecessarily, as you noted because if one dives a few times a year … and all in a one or two week period it’s a good deal economically. Also appreciated seeing the new Suunto as compared to Teric and MK3s…. Screen looks amazing, but your coverage of usability was very insightful. So many great choices. Did you notice any differences algorithmically/diversified time and deco response in their implementations? Thanks for such a thorough set of reviews.

As a diver just getting back into it after 30 years, I’m new to the computer age of diving so this video was a HUGE help in learning what would be best for me as an occasional sport diver with 60 year old eyes. The Perigrin would be my pick because it’s in my price range relative to my type of diving, and the large bright screen is a huge plus over monochrome screens. Especially diving in Midwest lakes with less than pristine visibility the screen and features would fit me nicely.

In the bottom tier I understand taking the established values, but as a new diver I went with the astonishing aqualung i330r, which is holding its ground quite firmly offering also nitrox capabilities and free dive mode, while also having a colour screen and rechargeable battery.
But if I may dream, I would of course go for the Garmin Mk3i. The air integration I find is a big difference with the descent as well. I want to better my air consumption and therefore an air integrated watch would be very helpful to analyse at what moments my air consumption goes up. For that specific reason the Suunto Ocean has an important edge. It has air integration, cost considerably less, and is a sport watch all around. As I am a hiker and horseback rider, this is the one I am particularly saving for!
I subscribed to the newsletter as I certainly do appreciate the well tested reviews

I’m very interested in the Garmin Mk3i as a dive computer because of the different activity tracking. The ability to use the compass both above and below the water line. The ability save locations, link with the Garmin inReach to send and receive messages.

    Hello
Thank you so much for your comparison video. My favorite is the Shearwater Peregrine. I’m 64. I was certified in n 1987 by Naui. I dove a little bit back then then left it alone for many years. I recently took a refresher course in preparation for our trip to Curacao. Went there in July and I had 4 dives off of the Sandals boat. Needless to say I’m now hooked and cannot wait to dive again. Looking at a trip through our local dive shop to go to Cozumel. So…I’m in the market for gear. I’m going Saturday to pick up my bcd. I’d love an opportunity to have some of the gear you guys are testing. Please give this ole PawPaw a consideration for some of your gear. Again thank you so much for your thorough gear presentation.
    Guy Menard.

I personally have the peragrin TX and I love it. I always wanted the perdix 2 when I started diving, but was a bit above my budget at the time. When they came out wit h the TX.. I jumped on that since it had Ai and compass.. The screen is really bright as stated in the video. I highly recommend this computer for new divers. It's about $1100 with the pod and is amazing

@@hornelogan323 I wouldn't recommend the MK3i to anyone who doesn't do at least 30-50 dives a year mainly because of the price point. If money isn't a constraint then go for it or else there are cheaper options like the G1 series which is about 1/4 the cost. Hope I answered your question

I have a Peregrine. It is a great dive computer, large display and great price and it is easy to download the logs and see them in the app. I like being able to see the data I want on the same screen without having to change screens. It is very easy to configure too. The Compass and AI is a really nice addition on the Peregrine TX. That would be my next one to get as a recreational diver.

I love my MK3i with T2 transceiver. The only problem is that my wife is now really jealous. Looks like we'll be saving up to get one for her, too.
In addition to diving, I do a lot of mountain biking and trail running. So I needed a computer that doubles as a sports watch. I chose the Garmin brand because I previously owned one of their watches and was very satisfied with the performance and durability. The thing survived multiple MTB crashes over six years without so much as a scratch. I passed it on to a friend and it's still going strong.
I specifically chose the MK3i because of the large screen size, the color maps, the air integration, and the complete array of dive capabilities. I am not currently a tech diver, but I may choose to become certified as one in the future.
I want to have that functionality available in case I need it.
