The hourglass used when Margaret Hamilton was throwing it was made of papier mache and wood. I own the hourglass lamp that you were referring to and the hourglass portion is only nine inches in height. I am EXTREMELY fortunate to own a full sized perfect replica hourglass made by David Hood. The gentleman that owns the one existing screen used hourglass allowed Mr. Hood to take measurements as well as take a mold of the griffin spindles. It is absolutely spectacular. Im researching getting a full scale crystal ball stand made as well.

Gotcha! I've never seen one of those lamps in person, so I wasn't sure just how big that portion of it was. Thanks for clarifying. How cool that you were able to get a full sized hourglass that was made (essentially) from the original. That's Ozsome!

It's just a bit of useless information, but I have timed my hourglass a couple of times, and it clocks in at about 2 hours, 1 minute, 30 seconds. Curious if anyone else has timed theirs.
Ikon did a fantastic job on this, I have no complaints at all. There is actually a LOT of simple yet complicated engineering in this piece. I image the packaging was their biggest troubles. I'm so impressed. 💚

I completely agree that Ikon has made a fabulous hourglass!
I haven't timed mine! (Literally filmed this after it came in the mail, so I didn't think about that...)

@LAQuadling my hourglass has completely stopped pouring sand. Something has clogged the middle and it no longer works. I'm just a little irritated by it. I felt like it was way too slow when I got it. I think I was correct now that it has stopped working. I'm curious if others are experiencing issues, or if the 2+hour runtime is normal.

    • @LAQuadling

I timed mine and it was 10 minutes. I wonder if your hourglass's sand was clumped together into bigger pieces and that's why it took longer? 🤷🏻‍♂️

LA Quadling thank you for the video! I received my Ikon hourglass a couple of weeks ago and was a little disapointed that I had to assemble it. The smaller scale was also a suprise. The Ikon website added the word "Scaled" to the description of the hourglass. They probably received some complaints. Overall I'm pretty happy with this item and the quality is very good...Looks great displayed next to my Paragon replica ruby slippers.

You're welcome! The hourglass does display very nicely with the other Ikon Design Studio replicas. It's definitely a standout piece in any _Wizard of Oz_ collection!

The sand is so red that it always reminded me of cherry or strawberry substances! Lol!

I’ve seen the original hourglass and it is believed it was a stunt one with less detail for the witch to throw-it was wood and paper machet-it looked awful in person as they added red glitter for the sand. This IKONs replica I just received is soooo extremely heavy. I really want a 1:1 scale hourglass!

That makes sense! I couldn't imagine Margaret Hamilton whirling around a heavy prop.

Ikon Design Studio hasn't numbered their limited pieces since the replica Ruby Slippers, so I wasn't surprised.

As is customary with movie props, staff at the MGM production company created several versions of the hourglass for different filming purposes, including one made of resin and one made of wood. The lightweight version they created out of wood and paper-mâché-which the Wicked Witch holds above her head during a tense moment as Dorothy and her friends escape the castle-was the one sold at auction on December 17.
After making its Wizard of Oz debut, the same hourglass appeared in other MGM films, such as Babes on Broadway (1941), Diane (1956) and 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (1964). Later owners filled the hourglass with red glitter-which is used only for display purposes, as the pieces can’t flow through the prop’s small neck. Over the years, the object also appeared in several museums across the country.

I was an idiot and ripped off the letter stickers before realizing it was meant for lining up the pillars. I’m a bit confused why the wings on one pillar aren’t exactly symmetrical with the wings on the pillar next to it. Thought it was the way I assembled it but after seeing yours I guess it’s intentional? Or maybe ikon quality control? Overall happy with it though especially with how solid it feels.

    • @LAQuadling
      @LAQuadling  8 місяців тому +1

At least you got it put together! I didn't know why the pillars weren't all the same, but I guess that's just how they designed it. I agree that I like how solid the overall hourglass is.

I also removed the stickers before putting the hourglass together. I'm pretty sure it doesn't make a difference...my hourglass seems to look OK.
