He makes me feel like studying is fun. He can be a good teacher.
@SIX PACK ABS i actually never felt like that and ive been using my ipad for about half a year now in school and i personally think it has made making notes fun, faster and easier
@SIX PACK ABS taking notes is one of the ways u study. I dont understand how thats any different
@SIX PACK ABS then i guess thats just personal choice of being curious on a topic. I like my major so im enjoying my core subjects 😊
Taking notes is fun, but making them look pretty is time consuming and can actually hinder you. I’m actually glad this dude is more straightforward with his notes and make them actually look helpful instead of trying to make his notes look all cute and stuff
@@ZzzZ-hm3mr btw whats your major?
For anybody who needs it:
1. Break the lecture down in questions
2. Group the questions that you make in categories
3. Find the answers on your questions with the lecture and additional resources
4. Take notes

You’re awesome thank you

"You don't need drawings to be a visual learner..just organizing information in a visual way and orienting it in a space forces your mind to connect things." THIS!!! 🙌🏽 Thanks, this video helps me so much!
You're right this can help us change from basic note taking to better visual notes. How/what have you done to implement this? Thanks!
But after that you have to remember all information , so note taking can help with that
I'm almost 50 years old, thinking about going back and doing a PhD, and you just taught me something profound that 5 decades of life and a Master's Degree in Education never did anywhere near as clearly. Bravo.

This is actually such incredible advice. I studied physics and every lecture made me feel so stupid. I thought I was, but 'feeling stupid' is actually the first step to learning. The second step is asking questions, and having the courage to do so. I wish I did this. Brilliant!
Well said!
I am currently studying physics and start the hardest semester of my degree in 3 weeks and I am definitely panicking! Congrats on making it out the other side.
Maybe it’s that I started college at a different maturity level but asking questions made me feel better. Most of the time everyone didn’t think of asking them so it saved everyone time. Also pointing out mistakes that made have occurred when posting items by the professor. Most of all it engages you in a different way, of course the downside is getting someone of track and things taking longer than they should or having your question avoided and not really answered thus wasting your time.
@@brayan8346 my favorite thing to do is stay after class to listen to the questions other people are asking the professor. Those are the questions that are great to hear because usually it’s a question you wouldn’t have thought to ask but you’re glad you got to hear the answer!
I am a junion taking AP physics in highschool and I wanted to ask how you were able to ask all these questions during the lesson, as well as how are do you not get lost in just making more and more questions if for example you dont understand a topic and that topic is needed to move onto the next topic and since you dont understand it you are then not able to engage in the topics and so on. Should I just make sure I know the topic fully before moving on? or should I save all the questions for later and try and study on my own time?
As a medical student, you totally opened up my mind and revolutionized the way I study. You have shifted my paradigm about studying that it isn't just a passive process, but an active one. Our brain works by answering question and our main job in learning is challenging it by asking questions and identifying problems. It isn't just plain memorizing and parroting. Thank you Samuel!

On being 76 yrs of age and curious and wanting to know about subjects that I love such as organic gardening and love for nature, Samuel ‘s video has ignited a new fire within me to remember what I read and take notes was really inspirational, You are truly a great teacher , teaching about how to ask the right question s to arrive at the right answers and to study well is so important so as to get the optimum output from your iPad ,which I have found to be a very powerful tool in learning and widening your horizons . Truly a great video and a learning experience.
Couldn’t agree more with the value of copying and drawing diagrams and notes yourself. Sam, I’m not try to get overly dramatic but your videos blessed my life and really saved me from a life shipwreck. My story. I’m a 42 year old. I just retired from the United States Marines as a senior officer. I have undergraduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science. I know how to learn and achieve. However, during my career I was injured in Iraq and have PTSD. Fast forward to now since retiring I’ve been pursuing my long time goal of becoming a dentist. Since it was 22 years from undergrad I decided to take all the prerequisites again fresh to do well on the DAT and well...just be a good student. My first semester was horr-r-ble! I barely passed. Barely passed subjects with skills I demonstrably mastered before. I was depressed and about to quit. I notice on my own how disorganized I was relative to my undergrad. I have a box that contains all my notes and exams from my engineering school. Neat and arranged. Going back to school today I was all over the place; total disaster. I didn’t mention I have 5 daughters now! Lol At any rate the long period of time away from school, the PTSD, the new life responsibilities, and disorganization point to some real executive functioning challenges. I have a much to work on the front but this semester as been so much better. Why? I watched all your videos and it motivated me. I got the IPad Pro 12.9 and I settled on Goodnotes even though I bought both apps. This organization is a game changer. Your video about combining notes, slides, and personal study were phenomenal. I don’t get as stressed out and I feel like I’m actually learning. I’d like to send you a study guide I easily made on Goodnotes; I’m kinda proud of it. Lol. Keep doing what you’re doing. I think you’re gonna be the Khan Academy of executive functioning. 🙏😃❤️ Ron
Please share the note taking guide with me also. Thanks
I'm so happy for you man! Keep up the hard work! 🙌🙌
omg Ron this is so sweet i'm so happy 4 you and I sincerely wish you the best with everything, especially your academic endeavours.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! I agree this video is changing a lot for me as well!
Plz share the study guide ❤️😭
I think this is the first study tips video that actually made sense. I’ve seen other videos that I can’t help but think they’re just bragging about themselves. These tips helpful, organized, and straightforward. Most of all, they just make sense.
Additionally, I admire all the work it takes just to make one video like this. The hours of trial and error to get to this point and then the editing is quite impressive.
Breaking down the material into questions is actually something called active recall!! So the way he's taking notes is super efficient in remembering and learning. His one-liner is the all encompassing rule at the core of learning: "All the answers you need are out there, you just need the right questions to access them." Great video my dude!!
I watched this video in 2020 and here I am one year later, I am an average student but I used your advice of writing down all the questions and I got 96% this year and understood everything. I just wanna thank you so much. Also I didn't use any iPad just with my books and papers. But now that I got good grades my dad told me he will buy me an iPad. ❤

Honestly what you're saying honestly makes a lot of sense, Instead of writing down all the information, the questions will eventually be fulfilled throughout the lecture. Thank you!
For years i've been struggling with Education and I'm going into college soon and I've been nervous about how notetaking works. I'm going in as a computer science major, and I really needed a way to break down everything
this is exactly what i inuitively used to do in undergrad and in med school, i just never had anyone else explain the process! except i skipped the question part and ipads weren't really that big of a thing back then so i did everything by hand but would love making charts and tree diagrams to reorganize the lecture content into a way that "fit" in my head. very cool!!!
so it's more like "study smart" rather than "study hard"
you need to put in the time and use it wisely :)
kahfi bonboy ayo
kahfi bonboy Yes because studying hard means a student would make studying more difficult by using the ways of how they should be studying than studying smart. Studying smart is more on finding smart ways, and methods to effectively, and time efficiently study.
Study smart is a part of study hard😛

@@SamVeneman you mean i pad air is same as i pad pro?
This video is not only useful to students. As a software engineer, this is also what I do in a professional setting. No matter how complex any project might seem at first, once I started writing down all the questions that came to my mind, all these smaller problems would become much more manageable. You just have to divide and conquer.
It was a nice surprise that this video is more about how you use the tool, instead of the tool itself. 🙂
Same for me , Linux administrator
Even though I have not watched your whole video I love it. And as someone who loved to study I could relate to your questioning. I also wonder if you felt this way, but there were many times when I studied large amounts of information and thought, “I’ll never learn all of this.” But the incredible thing was that there was always more in my brain than I thought. I think even if sometimes if feels as if our brains shut off and studying feels passive at times, if you keep looking at it and keep trying it finds itself into our brains. I found that so incredible.
this is EXACTLY how i passed my biology class last semester and i got an overall 98%!!!

I’m definitely going to return to this video going into college in a couple months. I’ve done well in high school by just “coasting” by, but I want to go into college with a fresh mindset with my note taking and study habits. This video, better than most others, has helped me understand how I can best succeed with new note taking habits and ideas. It also makes me even more excited to utilize my new iPad Pro in lecture. Have you experimented with typing notes/questions you may have with a keyboard set up? If so, how does that relate to your overall process?
definitely a good idea, i did the same in high school and used the same method in college and it really screwed me up. I followed up on the video and can proudly say I am a much better student :DD
It's pretty crazy how someone can have the ability to show in that extremely beautiful kind of way, underlined with music, how beautiful it is to gain knowledge. Thank you for that big inspiration, Samuel!

You definitely made me want to take notes on an iPad I don't even have, for a class, I'm not enrolled in. Great job on explaining and your creativity to breaking things down.
As I was watching this I began thinking how I could apply this to post college life. I have a lot of things I like to research and learn and often I have a combo of notes and media about these things . From this video and others I plan to try and start creating digital notes with images , video links etc that condense all the information that works for me. I’m adhd and lazy so I’ll likely just keep watching videos lol but, the idea is I think the concept is applicable even if your not in classes.
I love that you went through the long journey of trying to find in your mind, the best strategic ways on how to succeed in your education. I really appreciate you making this video, and showing us what works for you. I learned a lot of things i can apply to my learning even though i am a sophomore in high school. This will be beneficial to my Science research class and my chemistry class. I am new to taking and organizing notes on my iPad, and now I have a pretty good idea.
Oh wow, I thought it was only me who did this. I absolutely agree that writing questions as your notes during the lecture is a very good guideline or map for when you study, I do this for my ICT module since all the content is already available in the slides, and I could enrich my knowledge by answering the questions I've written down.

Wow! Just wow! I am a teacher and as my students are switching to digital devices over the last year, i begin to notice that many of them are struggling with their note taking... they would sometimes just write everything down as fast as they could, or don´t write down anything at all, maybe take a picture of a friends screen after the lesson. So before teaching them about the subject, i now absolutely will adress the methods that could be helpful for them. But what really hits me about your video is not the advice on how to take proper notes, but it is your approuch to learning (non-digital or digital). You are just so motivational, positive and authentic! I loved watching this video!!
I am crying! Thank you so much for this video. I am 38 struggled with school all my life and have do work extra hard to get good grades. I have ADHD. Hey Samuel, I happened to stumble upon your video.
I've been thinking of switching to paperless notes ever since I gained interest in learning how to do digital art.
My senior year of high school in the midst of online schooling was a wreck, for lack of a better term. I barely passed by the skin of my teeth, even with the encouragement and help of my teachers who went above and beyond for me. It was so bad I took an academic gap year to recover from it all.
I look at my upcoming first year of college with a healthy dose of fear. While I can't say it's completely gone after watching this video, I can say it's taken the edge off of it.
Thank you very much for posting this.
Great video! It took me a long time to understand that embarrassingly simple idea of just asking questions. I remember being told all through school, from kindergarten to post-secondary to "ask questions". I think a lot of people take it for granted because they don't want to appear foolish or unknowledgeable. It's a lot less foolish asking a question than hiding that you don't know and never learning it.
Keep asking questions! Even outside of a typical learning environment, keep asking questions. Worst case you get told to go away, best case is you might get some hard-earned knowledge for free. Even then I find most people who are passionate about their work or hobby are more than happy to answer questions you have.
I absolutely love how he admits there were things he didn't know, and there were things that overwhelmed him. That's what makes good students and good teachers.
"Breaking things down, and building things up.." sounded like a poetry!
He's so inspiring ngl! This video didn't focus nor even seemed like he was trying to promote iPad Pro, he was just being the compassionate most inspiring person every student needed. Hats off! :))
I must say, the point you made "all you need is the right questions" is absolute gold dust. It's the only way to truly prepare and to engage with whatever scenario you're walking into, education, work, even just a chat with a friend or stranger. I really enjoyed the way you presented your content and the energy with which you did. Solid work man - huge congrats and thank you for sharing content like this!

Thank you for showing me the way you think about studying it inspired me to believe in myself and create different ways to study for all the classes im taking
Great work Samuel and glad I stumbled on your video. Learning how to learn is the key and I can recall 30 years ago when reading my science degrees (real ones like yours not social science ones), when I realised the power of revision. Writing out ones notes as you do on your iPad really cements the learning. So many students think revision is just for swotting up prior to exams - it's not of course as you know.
Those epiphanies I would get when seeing almost feeling how complex polynomial calculus calculations worked fuelled a perpetual desire near addiction to have more such lightbulb moments.
Thanks mate and keep up the good work. I'll be sharing this with my kids for sure now the tech is here especially.

Good work Samuel, this video was great. You changed the way I see lecture heavy classes, it’s not about grasping every bit of information during class. It’s about our learning and studying habits to re-learn and reinforce information in our own personal way of understanding.
Also with the iPad, at the end of the video you said people think it will instantly click. I was one of those people. It is truly about the person and their efficiency to learn and understand to eventually transfer over knowledge to a physical or digital medium, regardless if its an iPad.

This was so helpful! I’ve been trying to get back into the “school” mindset to motivate me to get back to school but i’ve been so overwhelmed with the idea of school in general. This was so nice to watch!
same here! and it was really helpful to hear him emphasise individual learning styles over just one method. cause while it's important for us viewers to remember that ourselves, sometimes we just forget in the need to find ways to make school life easier. I got less info in this video than I did other study videos, but I got the most impactful lesson anyway.
@@AT-ws9lx yes same here too! I’ve always struggled because I’ve never known how to revise, everyone has always said flash cards but that method has never worked for me. This video was literally THE most helpful thing I’ve ever come across.
I’ve had a really hard time learning how to study even though I’ve done well in all my classes. This has helped me understand how to approach studying for lectures with difficult material. Thank you so much.
This video and your notes are awesome! You’re quite the storyteller and your notes methodology is an art form.
This is my third time here and I’m still like “How does he study again?”
Same!
Did you not take notes? ;)
you should write down the questions you have about this video and then search for answers xD
UA-cam is my lord and savior! I’d like to thank UA-cam for guiding me throughout every step of my life.
You’re a gifted speaker/teacher. Thank you for this. Is was so soothing (lol yes) and relaxing! I don’t even need to learn how to take notes, I was doing research on iPad pros 😂
Wow this is such a good advice for a med student like me especially on the tree diagram you've made for the histology class. Thank you for such great content!
Thank you so much, Samuel.
I am preparing for nursing school this August and I am trying to make a study method in which I will understand the materials effectively. I came across your video and everything just made sense to me.
Thank you for breaking it down. 🙏😊
Ogm I feel like a brand new person now I actually understand how to approch histology I was litteraly drowing in tissues
You has just saved my first year
This comment is reaaaaaallly underrated!! Histology and tissues? Clever puns much wow! 😍😍😍😍
Hehe I see what you did there you witty student, you 👀😂
You should definitely try out the Histogram app complete with diagrams, slides, videos and notes. It's there for android but I dunno whether there's an iOS version.
You have a huge potential for being a motivational speaker, because you actually motivated my to do my analytical essay in English which is a very hard accomplishment just so you know ;)
This was just amazing! I am beginning my dissertation and it is humanities oriented. However, so much of what you said resonated with me and inspired me to plan out my dissertation more visually. I also shared your video with others. :)
This is a life changing video for me, thank you for making a difference - 1 viewer at a time. You have changed my perspective on living and learning.
This is literally one of THE best videos I have ever watched on UA-cam in any subject!!! Thank you!
I agree
I definitely agree, do you think you could make a course on how to take notes 📝 or what’s your process of how to break things down with your approach with different example from your experience?
I almost cried over a how to study video wow
Thank goodness, I thought I was alone on that.
jennifer bikopoulos no, you're definitely not alone...I watch his videos whenever school makes me feel like giving up. My Doctorate of Physical Therapy should be sponsored by Samuel haha
This man will be a brilliant teacher. We as humans lack these types of teachers.
Very complete video, the way you make some examples to explain the theory is just perfect, it’s easy to understand how to use the tools that we have, a de also the way you make us reflect about how to work depending on witch type of stuff we have to do, that’s de most helpful and Interessé t video I’ve watched this week, thank you so much!
Anyone 100+ years old here?

"I let my curiosity take over" this sentence was so important for me. thanks for the great video
Just wanted to say:
This was a very well put together video. Really your approach to learning is very insightful and there are now a lot of ideas in my head of how to incorporate your steps into my learning process.
So, thank you!
Must say: one of the finest videos on note taking PROCESS I have ever seen! Thanks Samuel.
This is literally amazing, not only does it help you absorb more from a lecture, but it also is a great tool for studying. You're writing down the things you don't understand while absorbing the stuff you do better. Then going home and looking everything up to ensure you have a better understanding! This may just be the best trick to studying yet.
I’ve been feeling like I just wasn’t smart enough to keep going with my medical degree but your approach is amazing I’m going to give it a go next semester. So thank you
Please update me on how it goes!’
Good luck!
I wish you the best of luck and success on your end journey! Keep pushing and don’t give up!! ❤️
so how it went?
Just got mine in the mail today. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U The corners of the box was a little smashed but I think that’s more of the shipping’s fault. iPad was in perfect condition though. I ordered the yellow one thinking it was going to be a bright vibrant color. Instead I looks like more of a Gold color. I personally prefer the gold look. Definitely not disappointed but just a heads up to the ones expecting a brighter cream of yellow.
This video has given me so many new ideas for studying. I’m currently in paramedic school and I can see these new tips help so much
I don't know how he managed to make studying and note taking look so bad ass but im living for it
I love how you don’t fuss over having ‘aesthetic’ or ‘cute’ penmanship in your study notes like other Study bloggers 👏 Very practical and succinct tips!
Great video Sam. Please keep producing videos like this.
same as others, i clicked the video for the ipad but i learned not just about notability and and goodnotes, but also on how to organize my time, effort and etc in studying. Thanks you
this is my first time watching a video of you, and I must tell you this felt very motivational, I dunno something about your explanations got me hooked, definitely keen to see such amazing content ...
This was incredibly helpful! For years and years I've struggled to scribble notes as fast as I could trying to keep up with slides and then look over them later and try to figure out what they were trying to say and feel like a idiot when I couldn't understand. I hadn't ever considered making my questions such a high priority. Thank you so very much for taking the time to do this. Subbed.
You’re welcome MadDog
