I have a severly mentally ill neighbour, who has for her entire 60 years of life caused harm to herself, her mother, her sister, countless men she has tricked, animals and others property. She is well known, have websites, facebook and youtube where she crazy talks. Shes been before a jugde so many times because she sues you for made up things. She is the direct cause her mother took her life. Her mother had to flee from her own home to get away from her daugther.
It would be best for everyone, including this woman, to be placed somewhere, but its not possible.

It's Florida, her mother could've used the Baker Act and got her daughter involuntarily held for mental health issues for 72 hours. At least they could evaluate her and either commit her or put her on some medication. Leaving a paranoid schizophrenic in jail does nothing.

I’m so happy to read Joie survived this attack and is now doing well. She has an amazing story of courage and determination to share. My wife worked in a convenience store for a few years and my teenage son works there now. You just never know what someone will do. I hope Betty never sees freedom again.

  • @PigeonDesign

As horrific as this crime is, Joie is doing fairly well now considering. I looked her up and her scarring has healed incredibly well for the intensity of her burns and how long she spent in the hospital. Of course she’s still dealing with the trauma and physical pain it has caused her (like damage that has debilitated the use of her hand). She said “I want other burns survivors to know life will continue, just take it one day at a time. My scars are slowly healing and I won’t let it rob me of my future.” What an amazing woman!!

ER nurse here. A lot of people think that being burned is what causes you to die, but patients actually normally die from infection. Our skin is our main protection against outside germs, and it is also a huge part in how we retain water. Therefore, infection and volume loss are reasons burn patients die. So although that nice Samaritan was able to put out the fire, the fact that it was dirty mop water made my heart drop.

Now when that patient acts out is it the patient's fault or is it the state that patient didn't put themselves on the street the state put them on the street someone with mental health issues. Really makes you think about how our system works when these people with severe mental impairments that will undoubtably lead to criminal behavior are not properly housed for the safety of people and for their own safety. Someday maybe things will change.

Something like this should have been looked at when they were younger. Unfortunately not a lot of people know how to do this or they believe that if your child is seeking mental help then that means you did something wrong or you’re being a lazy parent so they keep their kids at home and ignore everything so everyone outside the house can think that everything is fine.
Then again there’s also parents who don’t seek mental help for their kids because they’re abusing them and would rather let their kids become killers instead of having to choose between learning to be a better parent or going to jail.

I’m an ICU nurse and burns can be very dangerous. They can cause electrolyte imbalances which can cause cardiac arrest. They can go into multi system organ failure from burns. The biggest risk is infection. They are also extremely painful. The best place to get severe burns handled is a hospital that has a burn center.
Then after the person is done with all the medical treatment, they still have to live with the disfigurement. That is very hard for someone mentally. Society is very focused on looks, so having very visible scars on parts of your body like arms and face and very traumatizing to the person. They have to live with that forever and be reminded everyday of what happened. Plastic surgery can help with looks but there’s only so much it can help. Plus then that is another risk for infection after each surgery. In my opinion it’s one of the worst things someone can do to someone else. I can’t imagine how horrible that must have been for the victim. Hope she’s able to recover from this mentally and physically.

My husband was caught in an explosion involving petrol just over three years ago. Full and partial (3rd and 2nd degree) burns to 51% of his body. He wasn’t expected to survive. The fortunate thing, and the thing that helped save him was a shower that was a stones throw from the storage unit he’d been working in. One of the last things he remembers is his skin circling the shower drain. The other was the look on the face of one of the paramedics once the ambulance arrived. He was placed in a medically induced coma and spent 33 days in a positive pressure isolation room in ICU.
He underwent two major surgeries during this time and battled many infections and other setbacks. He was moved to the burns unit after this then onto rehabilitation where he had to learn how to walk again (due to muscle wastage) and relearn all the basic skills like toileting, bathing, brushing teeth etc. He was in hospital for four months. Burns are absolutely terrible. So debilitating. We’re off to the hospital again tomorrow for his 18th laser procedure under general anaesthetic. Many more to go.
