Nicholson's joker is much more like the one in the comics. Always smiling, always has a joke, and not a sliver of sanity. Heath's joker is more like if the joker existed in real life.

TheBlues32 what’s wrong with making him the one responsible for killing Batman’s parents? I thought this a very good change. And what’s wrong with giving the joker a definitive backstory? Remember, this is just a movie and it’s not canon with the comics so it really shouldn’t matter if he has a backstory. He was a horrible person to begin with; just falling into the chemicals pushed him over the edge. I’m not trying to be rude with this comment, just stating my opinion
@UC47dtKlSIVeIy7R-HOaK8Sg Well, for one thing, that makes him a good ten years plus older than Batman. Jack Nicholson already looked too old for the part, this just drives it home. Two, it provides further backstory to a character who isn't meant to have a definite backstory. Three, it's a bizarre coincidence that serves no purpose to the plot.
The maniacal laughter after the line "I'm glad you're dead!" really reinforces how he has changed from Jack Napier to Joker, and his barely holding his new self in during the meeting was brilliant.
I love how he tried for all of ten minutes to be the Don and keep up appearances, but then decided to murder everyone and start poisoning babies instead lol If the other Family heads had been agreeing with him, Joker might have kept the mob alive as a money maker. Once someone said 'No', that was it. Grissom's money will be used to destroy everything and hurt people for no reason.
Jack Nicholson’s Joker is a grossly underrated interpretation of the character and doesn’t get anywhere near as much credit or acclaim as it deserves. For a character that has a rich history of incredible portrayals, both on screen and voiceover, this performance is often overlooked in favour of Heath Ledger and more recently, Joaquin Phoenix. They’re all incredible performances in their own right!
see i think the problem is; this movie cam out when the main villains started to become smart or smarter than the hero. like Hans in Die Hard. so Joker (Jack) here was a somewhat “toy” villain, making him misfit for the era. Films started to add layers to their characters, and joker in this movie has only one layer: destroying everything but mainly the Batman. now Ledger’s Joker came out where the layers of the villain and hero are at almost at peak, but we started to show how crazy the real world is. so they became a kind of critique of society. And Ledger’s joker delivers that layer too. that famous interrogation where he is frank about how everyone turns inside out at the first sign of chaos. altough he retained some of the Joker’s “its about the message” sort of function, it is simply much more like an Ogre and onion… it smells bad and makes people cry… and has more layers :) Joaquin makes it even further and this time we are truly about how the world is a joker on its own right… how cruelty and selfishnes turned most of people the joker … and him … he just admits it. now i would say Jack’s Joker is true to the comics of the time, and since his drive is not to show the the world how bad they are, he is proper evil and a classic villain. and that is scary. but his underrated performance was mainly down to the badly timed release / as in the industry moved to a different direction. regardless: its a great movie and superb a cting, so i am not talking it down. just similar what happened to Windows Vista in 2006. Microsoft anticipated that CPUs will run around 6-7-8 GHZ … but what happened is, we were barely running on 2 but we had multiple cores… which the vista kernel just could not take andvantage of. if this movie comes out a few years prior, i am sure Jack would have even got an Oscar for this.
Just because someone like Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Hamill, Cesar Romero or others doesn't mean Jack Nicholson's Joker is underrated. First and foremost it's Jack Nicholson. It's taking Joker and putting that character up against the actors best. Burtons Batman movie has done so much to the Batman character portrayal/writing sense that it's just a different discussion. Everyone is compared to Nicholson's joker. Ledger especially was. If there is ever a serious discussion about the Joker, Nicholson isn't getting skipped.
2 different types of jokers. Jacks joker was kinda more businessman like and rich where phoenix’s joker was more of someone pissed at the world who had a smith and Wesson 38 in his possession.

I always saw Jack Nicholson's Joker as a mafia boss first and foremost. He loves to laugh, joke around ironically, but he is at his heart a ruthless, sociopathic, and feared mob boss who rules with an iron fist. Love it.
His serious facial expression as he watches the bosses leave, reveals he's already planning the final details of their demise, which is why he's able to take interest in this "Batman" that's stealing his headlines. He makes a joke about it by having a conversation with a corpse over his resolve to "grease 'em now." The meeting was a formality other than making sure they knew he was taking over by gleefully killing one of the more powerful, himself, right in front of the others.

Same. Because he basically died when he fell into the vat. He was probably going to die of cancer or something due to the toxins eventually so everything after was a joke to him.

Jack is STILL getting paid for this performance. Jack Nicholson When Jack Nicholson accepted the role of the Joker in the 1989 movie "Batman," he accepted a salary of $6 million, even though his average salary at that time was $10 million. The contract that he signed included a stipulation that Nicholson would earn a percentage of the film's total earnings, including sales of the film's merchandise. "Batman" was an overwhelming success at the box office, grossing $411 million worldwide (the equivalent of over $847 million in 2020). Nicholson ended up earning more than $50 million for the role ($103 million in 2020
I’ve always loved this scene because it perfectly showcases just how fair gone his mind really is. No audience, none of his goons, not even Batman. Talking to a freshly burnt corpse alone and loving every minute of it! Another similar scene was in Spider-Man when Norman Osborne talks to his “other self.”
The scariest thing is his full blown paranoid schizophrenia, the mumbling, the silly noises he makes to himself. If he had you tied up, there is nothing you could say to persuade him to not hurt you. Nothing. He just a void.
2:02. Joker laughing then starts to wipe the makeup off his forehead. Bob behind him is noticeably smiling then the Joker turns and looks at him, then the smile goes away. Nice subtle touch to show how terrifying the Joker is that his own men are terrified of him.

Let's talk about the science of joker laugh, the only person in this planet who can do a perfect laugh as a joker is Jack Nicholson, so real so natural, especially in the scene where he electrocuted the mob, he has a natural long breath, that's why the laughter sounds so good, that wheezing sound like people with asthma is so hard to do if you don't have that naturally, also listen to the laugh after joker push batman and vicki vale off the building, it's so f$&king delicious and satisfying to listen to especially if you listen through earphones, so haunting and joyful, sorry to say but Heath ledger failed at that, he's just "woohh.. haha", except Joaquin Phoenix(great), the rest of them are so fake and forceful, they have to scream to get the joker's laugh, for example Mark Hamill, quite cringe and anoying actually, the laugh was perfectly illustrated by Nicholson by having a set of laughs that range from maniacal and gleefully wild to dark and deeply threatening that sounds natural
I don't know if anybody notices that when he grabs his henchman and says: And, Bob, remember, you're my number one - he's actually doing an imitation of Jack Palance, from scene before he became the Joker.
The majority of this is actually written in the script by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren, including the part where he's talking to the corpse. But the bits where he says "I got a live one here." And sings "There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" [a song that dates back to 1896] were not scripted.

This is the Joker’s best scene in the whole movie. Jack Nicholson’s evil laugh after he kills Rotelli then talking to his corpse, ending it with “I’m glad you’re dead,” then laughs manically and keeps repeating the phrase and laugh as he walks away and it trails off with him laughing harder every time, is unforgettable. I have watched Heath Ledger’s version many times and although I consider his Joker superb, I can’t recall a single scene that repeats in my memory like Jack Nicholson’s.
Agreed, every iteration of Joker works for the universe they are in. This joker scene was by far the most creepiest and disturbing of any other joker in cinema. Talking to a freshly burned corpse that must smell horrific and Nicholsons Joker just taking it all in and loving it.
To me, this is one of the most disturbing scenes in cinema history, of any genre. But ironically, hilarious at the same time, and masterfully acted. A strange, rare combo. It is somewhat comparable to the real life Cadaver Synod, where a Pope’s corpse was put on trial by the current, living Pope. I would imagine that this scene shocked a lot of people at the time when it came out, being in a Batman film....and what people typically expected from Batman. This was outright horror.
Everyone think im nuts when i tell them, Nicholson is my number 1 Joker. Cmon, he nailed it. The scene when he pulls that huge pistol of his trousers is classic aswell!
He is the Joker. He is mad, evil, funny and theatrical. I'm not sure why people compare all the Jokers, especially Ledger's and Phoenix's. Those movies are very different and the characters were very different. Not sure why there's such a need to constantly make rankings, etc.
I loved the fact that when the joker was shaking his hand and when that guy was burning up he was singing, “Oh there’ll be a hot on, in the ole town tonight!!” Such a good old Jack Nicholson comedy!! 😂😂😂
One of my favorite scenes in any comic book movie. The insanity and comedy in this performance is magnificent. The eerie music that played as Joker talked to Antoine's charred corpse followed by his maniacal laughter. This is Joker all the way. Completely crazy and totally terrifying at the same time while cracking his jokes. I think Jack deserved an oscar for this.
This is why I think Jacks Joker is the best, he really seems like he’s the most deeply disturbed joker there is. The other jokers just haven’t had this much fun being a sadistic murderer.
The thing that Jack Nicholson had that tops all the Joker performances was his ability to be hilarious and threatening at the same time. That takes a lot of great skill.
Michael Keaton said that during production, they were both going through makeup, with Nicholson getting all those appliances and Keaton into all his outfit, and Nicholson said "Sometimes... you gotta let the costumes do the acting". He obviously liked having fun with it all.
That's why Joker laughs afterwards, he killed Grisom and makes fun of him by imitating him. Not to mention he killed him yet told the Gotham mob bosses that he'll "resurface", so he finds the fact Grisom is gone for good yet told otherwise funny as well. Could also be resentment for the fact Grisom told the same thing to Jack yet set him up over a womam.
After revisiting this film multiple times, personally for me Jack still has the edge over Heath. He nailed the balance of the character, both the disturbing and the wacky aspects of Joker including his laugh, lines, appearance, posture, and demeanor. What is the cherry on top is the fact he has a conversation with a corpse, further demonstrating the extra level of insanity that the Joker embodies.
This movie is probably a more comix book accurate depiction of joker but Heaths IMO is far better acted, he literally became a different person. Jack isn't playing that much a different charter then the one he played in the Shining. The best is 90s animated though.
There is a reason the "Joker" remains such a popular role to play and everyone who has won an Oscar for that actually owes it to Jack Nicholson. He was the first one to make it truly immortal.
2:42 For the longest time when I was younger I never actually realized he was doing a comical impression of Jack Palance, I just thought he was copying him really badly. Now I watch this and laugh every time. 🤣
I love how his “human” appearance was simply makeup. That’s something I don’t think we’ve seen with other Jokers before or since. Another reason why Jack Nicholson is probably the best movie Joker.
Well, Jeremiah from the show *Gotham* also wore make-up to fool Bruce Wayne in season 4, but he wasn't technically "the Joker" (even if the official subtitles call him "Joker").
I originally thought this scene was done by having Nicholson use the handkerchief to wipe some white makeup onto his face to give the illusion, but no. The makeup team actually applied two layers of makeup to Nicholson in every scene throughout the movie that shows this; the joker skin makeup, then put a protective layer of wax (iirc) over that, then the fake skin makeup. Which is why the fake skin makeup realistically washes/wipes off throughout the film and achieves the look of actually looking like fake skin makeup, because it is. Phenomenal makeup department work that really should have gotten recognition.
Joker's mastery of disguise is an aspect of the character I wish people didn't forget about. Realistically, someone with his distinct appearance and complexion would have to disguise themselves when they're out and about so as not to instantly get recognized. Hell, in his first appearance during the early 40s, he disguised himself as a cop to get in a room alone with one his victims so he could taunt him before his poison took effect.
I love the moment when everyone leaves the room and Nicholson is cackling and muttering to himself like a mad man and then all of the sudden a switch flips and his expression changes. That moment always terrifies me because it shows how unpredictable and dangerous The Joker really is. How he can go from laughing and having the time of his life to deadly serious in the blink of an eye. Jack Nicholson as the Joker remains my favorite portrayal of this character for that very reason.
@@Angyali Not only that, but it also made Jack more open of his psychotic tendencies as he was more somewhat subtle with them before he fell into the acid.
There was going to be a fifth Batman movie called Batman Triumphant/Batman Unchained where Jack Nicholson’s Joker would have made an appearance in Scarecrow’s fear toxin. Unfortunately, due to the critical failure of Batman and Robin, this movie never came to be.
The only problem I had with Tim Burton's Batman films is that he didn't stay true to the source material in one way that matters: Batman never intentionally kills someone, and never killed the Joker, even on accident. He always apprehends the Joker and puts him in police custody. Him intentionally grappling Joker's leg to the stone gargoyle, causing the latter to fall to his death, was a black mark on the film, as that's something Batman would NEVER do.
The 'glad your dead' scene is particularly amazing because we're seeing the Joker alone, truly being himself. He's not performing. He's not faking the laugh like Ledger(who we only ever see in scenes with other characters, to whom he has something to prove). We're watching the actual Joker laugh about his destructive, spiraling plans for the city now that he can't be a regular crime boss like he'd planned, due to his disfigurement, and just wants to desperately find art while running the recognizable world into the ground.
@Chris he means because Ledger has an audience when he does these things and laughs then, Jack's Joker laughed by himself and talked to himself, laughed about his own jokes
I agree with everything except about Ledgers Joker. He does in fact do things he genuinely finds funny. Like in the truck he laughs after crashing the helicopter. And even then we never see him alone anyway so how can you be so sure?
@@Nick64266 That's the point he's making. Ledger's Joker always had an audience. Speculating on how he would act when alone is useless because there's never an opportunity to see that. Jack's Joker had moments where he was by himself and we really saw him laugh at his own jokes and talk to himself and just make those weird random noises.
That's a professional; The silk handkerchief wouldn't stay in his pocket so he dumps it off camera with his left hand so it wouldn't spoil the dialog exchange with his henchman. Good job, Jack.
In real life he wiped white makeup from the rag on his forhead, but in the scene he is supposed to be removing Tan Makeup that he used to cover up his now white, pale face that was the result of him falling into the acid.
@@MrParkerman6 Actually that's not true, Jack actually does have the white makup on in the scene. They lightly covered the whiter makeup with skin color so Jack could then wipe it off. It's really interesting. They talk about it here: ua-cam.com/video/7n4TgvtbvHc/v-deo.html

now Ledger’s Joker came out where the layers of the villain and hero are at almost at peak, but we started to show how crazy the real world is. so they became a kind of critique of society. And Ledger’s joker delivers that layer too. that famous interrogation where he is frank about how everyone turns inside out at the first sign of chaos. altough he retained some of the Joker’s “its about the message” sort of function, it is simply much more like an Ogre and onion… it smells bad and makes people cry… and has more layers :)
Joaquin makes it even further and this time we are truly about how the world is a joker on its own right… how cruelty and selfishnes turned most of people the joker … and him … he just admits it.
now i would say Jack’s Joker is true to the comics of the time, and since his drive is not to show the the world how bad they are, he is proper evil and a classic villain. and that is scary. but his underrated performance was mainly down to the badly timed release / as in the industry moved to a different direction.
regardless: its a great movie and superb a cting, so i am not talking it down.
just similar what happened to Windows Vista in 2006.

The fact that Nicholson's Joker makes laughter as natural as breathing makes him three times as disturbing. I love it.
He and Mark Hamill do the Joker’s laughter best. Effortless, random, utterly maniacal.

Nicholson made laughter as natural as breathing, and it only added to the terrifying mania that consumes the character.

What I love about this Joker more than the rest is that he's actually funny and he lives the whole "life's a joke" life.

Let's talk about the science of joker laugh, the only person in this planet who can do a perfect laugh as a joker is Jack Nicholson, so real so natural, especially in the scene where he electrocuted the mob,
he has a natural long breath, that's why the laughter sounds so good, that wheezing sound like people with asthma is so hard to do if you don't have that naturally, also listen to the laugh after joker push batman and vicki vale off the building, it's so f$&king delicious and satisfying to listen to especially if you listen through earphones, so haunting and joyful,
sorry to say but Heath ledger failed at that, he's just "woohh.. haha", except Joaquin Phoenix(great), the rest of them are so fake and forceful, they have to scream to get the joker's laugh, for example Mark Hamill, quite cringe and anoying actually,

The thing that Jack Nicholson had that tops all the Joker performances was his ability to be hilarious and threatening at the same time. That takes a lot of great skill.
This man is really enjoying his role to a point that one wonders if he is acting or not.
He isn't.
I’m pretty sure Tim just filmed jack hanging out with his friends and realised he could put in in a Batman movie
Ruben Everest naw all it took was one watch of the shinning
He just knee the type of payday he would get after this movie. Smart man to take royalties over up front pay.
Michael Keaton said that during production, they were both going through makeup, with Nicholson getting all those appliances and Keaton into all his outfit, and Nicholson said "Sometimes... you gotta let the costumes do the acting". He obviously liked having fun with it all.
After the "honey you'll never believe what happened to me today" nicholson's witty little chuckle after always had me cracking up

I'm gonna catch hell for this one, BUT Jack Nicholson's Joker 🃏 was the best one from the entire Batman series.
Heath Ledger might be my favorite but I absolutely respect Jack Nicholson as your favorite. He was a classic after all.
Agreed, personally i think Ledgers Joker was trash
@@g-fanmax1838 and leto too, hes at least the most comic correct
We all have our preferences. I personally enjoy Heath Ledger's Joker but Nicholson still did a great job in the role.
I prefer Mark Hamil as the best Joker, then Jack Nicholson, then Heath and the Phoenix.
I always loved the part where he's like "Ooh we got a live one here HAHAHAHAHA"
Same. That laugh after he says it always cracks me up! 🤣🤣
Batdance
That impression of Jack Palance he did at 2:43 was always so funny to me 'cause that's exactly how Jack Palance expressed his characters.
@@mohamedtoure4388 A WOMAN!!!! Grisom must be insane!

Heath did an amazing job in a tedious movie, it makes me wish he'd worked with Tim Burton instead of Nolan.
@@DeepScreenAnalysis aGREE
@@DeepScreenAnalysis I wonder if we would have gotten a diff joker out of heath
This movie is probably a more comix book accurate depiction of joker but Heaths IMO is far better acted, he literally became a different person. Jack isn't playing that much a different charter then the one he played in the Shining. The best is 90s animated though.

Funniest moment in the film. He did have a pretty fucked up day after all
@@HalfEatenMedia true lol
There is a reason the "Joker" remains such a popular role to play and everyone who has won an Oscar for that actually owes it to Jack Nicholson. He was the first one to make it truly immortal.
“Life has been good to me” is a under rated line
I love the way he giggles after it, too. Like it's his own little inside joke.
I think they got it from Danny Elfman’s song “Gratitude”
"OH! I got a live one here!"
"Antoine got a little hot under the collar"
God these are great. You can tell Jack Nicholson had fun with this role.
Also, "There will be a hot time in the old town tonight!" That always makes me laugh.
2:42 For the longest time when I was younger I never actually realized he was doing a comical impression of Jack Palance, I just thought he was copying him really badly. Now I watch this and laugh every time. 🤣
This is why Nicholson will always be my favorite joker. The under the breath mutterings and raucous laughter are truly a master class for insane.
I love how his “human” appearance was simply makeup. That’s something I don’t think we’ve seen with other Jokers before or since.
Another reason why Jack Nicholson is probably the best movie Joker.
Yeah terrible makeup
Well, Jeremiah from the show *Gotham* also wore make-up to fool Bruce Wayne in season 4, but he wasn't technically "the Joker" (even if the official subtitles call him "Joker").
@@TheMpo1986 how
I originally thought this scene was done by having Nicholson use the handkerchief to wipe some white makeup onto his face to give the illusion, but no.
The way he erupts into laughter just a few inches from the charred face is priceless!! Jack Nicholson was BRILLIANT!!
Wow and they thought Heath Ledger's Joker was nuts. This guy is bananas.
barbiquearea Jack Nicholson said he warned him!
Yeah hes beyond insane and that makes him a perfect Joker. FFS he wanted to kill the entire city of Gotham in this version with laughing gas.
Ledger's Joker is not crazy. He's notttt.
@@aramfingal5180Yeah because hes not the joker from the comics but so called "realistic".
No, he’s the whole freaking sundae!! 😂😂
That acid amplified Jack's psychotic tendencies.
Bipolar maybe?
@@Angyali Not only that, but it also made Jack more open of his psychotic tendencies as he was more somewhat subtle with them before he fell into the acid.
Great performance
I'll always love Jack Nicholson's Joker. Wish he could of been in at least one more Batman movie but he was an amazing Joker.
There was going to be a fifth Batman movie called Batman Triumphant/Batman Unchained where Jack Nicholson’s Joker would have made an appearance in Scarecrow’s fear toxin. Unfortunately, due to the critical failure of Batman and Robin, this movie never came to be.
Exactly
@@bhunt799I’m more into Batman Redemption
@@bhunt799 happens to a lot of Cult Classics unfortunately... That would have been great.
Brilliantly said.
@Chris he means because Ledger has an audience when he does these things and laughs then, Jack's Joker laughed by himself and talked to himself, laughed about his own jokes
Never realized that…Good eye 👍🏾
I agree with everything except about Ledgers Joker. He does in fact do things he genuinely finds funny. Like in the truck he laughs after crashing the helicopter. And even then we never see him alone anyway so how can you be so sure?
@@Nick64266 That's the point he's making. Ledger's Joker always had an audience. Speculating on how he would act when alone is useless because there's never an opportunity to see that. Jack's Joker had moments where he was by himself and we really saw him laugh at his own jokes and talk to himself and just make those weird random noises.
"You ever heard of the healing power of laughter?"
2019 Joker certainly has
Jerome Valeska: There’s nothing more contagious than laughter
Still to this day the best comic accurate Joker!
Jack was absolute perfection in this.
That demented, babbling little laugh he does right after Bob walks away is pure genius.
That's a professional; The silk handkerchief wouldn't stay in his pocket so he dumps it off camera with his left hand so it wouldn't spoil the dialog exchange with his henchman. Good job, Jack.
O.C.TileGuy good eye!
uhh u mean it took it off to wipe for someresson makeup on his forehead?
In real life he wiped white makeup from the rag on his forhead, but in the scene he is supposed to be removing Tan Makeup that he used to cover up his now white, pale face that was the result of him falling into the acid.
@@MrParkerman6 Actually that's not true, Jack actually does have the white makup on in the scene. They lightly covered the whiter makeup with skin color so Jack could then wipe it off. It's really interesting. They talk about it here: ua-cam.com/video/7n4TgvtbvHc/v-deo.html
