Ocarina of Time was originally developed as Zelda 64 for the Nintendo 64 DD, before being reworked to release on a cartridge with additional content meant for the N64 Disk Drive. At one point, Miyamoto confirms two separate Disk Drive Expansion packs. A recent leak shows some more beta images of what Ocarina of Time could have been when it was still in its beta phase and known as only Zelda 64.

i'm sure someone's already brought it up, but that "boss rush" mode... That's probably a remnant of what the game was GOING to be. in the early stages of development, there wasn't going to be a hyrule field. the entire game was meant to take place in ganon's castle. You know how you have to complete the mini dungeon challenges in order to break the barrier around the central pillar? those challenges were going to be full dungeons, and that would have been the entire game. so all of those alternate/condensed dungeon rooms are probably artifacts from that stage of development.
Only a matter of time until someone finds the high res version of the “L is real” sign texture, assuming it was drawn at a higher resolution originally.
It seems that the texture itself isn’t high res. It’s most likely meant to be illegible to be just a placeholder. I genuinely don’t think it means anything.
Seeing the spider house and the Ikana well were originally in Ura Zelda/Zelda 64 made me realize when Aonuma said Ura Zelda was Frankensteined into new games/concept just exactly how much he meant that. It makes me wonder what else was in Ura Zelda/Zelda 64 that then ended up in future titles.
Hard to say, since we don't know exactly how much of Ura even made it past planning stages, but I'd be willing to bet after seeing a lot of this stuff that almost all of what had entered production was probably reused in some form or another.
I feel like the "boss rush mode" was more in line with how the game may have originally been developing. A hub (castle) where you would enter rooms, like Mario 64, and complete puzzles, bosses, gather items, etc
What we do have from screenshots and stuff basically confirm that it was supposed to be more than what master quest gave us. Though the word Ura translates to "the flip side" so it would make sense. There are scripts for a sky and ice temple, as well as 2 additional tunics, white and yellow. Most of the ideas probably went into Majora's Mask though.
I don't think he was being totally honest because Ura Zelda was claimed by nintnedo to have overworld changes and new dungeons. MQ has different dungeons, but it's missing most of the things that were said at one point or another were expected to end up in the game.
I can’t get over the fact how the people who got this information definitely had it before the fabled 2401 but they wanted to stay true to the prophecy and leak Luigi being real 24 years and 1 month after the release of Mario 64
Wow, now I really wish Nintendo could've made a Resident Evil style Zelda game with pre-rendered backgrounds and more emphasis on combat, but also minus the tank controls.
While the person broke the law for these leaks. I can at least appreciate that the person didn't let these ancient pieces of Zelda history rot in whatever fashion they were rotting before. But while I don't like the way they did it. But seeing all of these beta stuff removed from the final product just makes me so giddy, because it's something that a bet a lot of people were itching to see for a long time, myself included.
@@garlandstrife sometimes, there things you have to sacrifice to get things that should have been explained or revealed fucking years ago but Nintendo wish to keep good shits to themselves because they're stingy and only making games not for fans but foolish finance gain.
This is freaking cool, on how much one single game created some much influence but also that there is still information that could had gone on the daylight without the hacking, I find fascinating how much Nintendo keeps the codes after all these years.
Maybe they started designing the boss room and nearby rooms first, then built outward from there adding rooms, chests, keys, switches, ect. that would lead up to it. Unless there's more and Nintendo stopped it from leaking.
This video covers leaks from the "giga leak", which actually does contain some of the ura / zelda 64 expansion stuff. We also cover some ura / expansion stuff in our newest video that is now up. Ura began as a single disk expansion, which was later split into 2 disk expansions. The original Ura featured remixed dungeons "like master quest", new locations, new dungeons, new weapons, etc... Nintendo kept adding so much content to the disk that it all wouldn't fit on a single disk, so they split it up. 1 kept the Ura name and the other was named Gaiden. Ura contained all of the remixed dungeons, slight online functions, a boss rush mode and a bit more and ended up becoming Master Quest. Gaiden kept all of the new dungeons, locations, story, weapons, etc... and eventually became Majora's Mask.
It does not, and. That cant happen it just cant at least not the way this was, and the Japanese strategi guud for Sm64 has interviews where they say luigi was ment to be in the game but cut it does not say l is real and even IF it did we cant find out
I am more surpised that back then they were saying they wanted to do ‘expansions packs. I remembered picking up years ago a Super famicam for my collection and it only had one game that looked like Mario, however it was playing fire emblem. I first thought someone just switched the board so it could be playable but then i learned they had a system where if you wanted a new game but not a new cartage you could somehow rewrote the game like a Download! And this was back in the early to late 90’s for god sake!
They had special kiosks in Japanese malls where you could plug in a famicon cart, pay some cash, and then select a game. The kiosk would then format the flash memory on the cart, and re-flash it with a copy of that game. It wasn't a very widespread or popular service AFIK, so congrats on a rare item!
Correct. And there are three Zelda repos in the leak, "z_ocarina", "z_ocarina2", and "z_majora". "z_ocarina2" IS URA Zelda. It's just mostly Master Quest with some alpha MM assets and a lot of references to the DD. As far as all the other planned stuff for URA Zelda, they simply didn't get around to making it, as far as we can tell.
I personally wouldn't risk doing the leaks, myself, but I still find it interesting what data miners can find, when they look into these games and then leak them. The only leaks I personally dislike are when people hack into a production company and leak early versions of episodes of a show that I really like. It just makes me feel like I'm constantly risking a spoiler, every where I go.
Well, MM Was originally planned as Zelda Gaiden which would be another expansion alongside Ura. My belief is that what went unused in Ura was eventually repurposed into MM.
