    I got the 502 without the tailpiece today. It really surprised me with the quality for the price. I quite like the raunchiness of the stock pickups with a Marshall. It punches well above it’s weight. The only thing I don’t really like is the toggle switch feel and the colour… I reckon the gold top refin you did looks sensational!

      Yamaha makes a good guitar and for the price you can’t beat it. Great choice! The stock pickups are fine. I can’t even play a Strat at the church I go to because the hum I get with single any coils.

      @@gregsteffey1266 yeah I play mostly with quite a deal of gain so a noise suppressor is mandatory.

      @@gregsteffey1266 - sounds like you definitely need a strat pickup upgrade. I recommend dimarzio area 58 / rwrp67 for the neck/mid. They're not really single coils so they won't hum yet their tone is unmatched. Nice work on this revstar upgrade. I'm in the process of upgrading mine. I can never leave a guitar stock it seems.

    Beautiful job! May I ask what brand/color of gold paint you used and the white base coat primer?

    Very nice job! I got mine two weeks ago (rs820), beautiful sound, warm and smooth, it could be the combination between sg and les paul, where did you get that pickguard? Have a nice day and congrats!!!

    Hello. Do you happen to still have the original bridge/ posts and volume/ tone knobs? If so can I purchase them from you?

    Wow, very cool work! :)
    Out of curiousity: what did you think about the original Yamaha pups?

    • @gregsteffey1266
      @gregsteffey1266  3 роки тому +1

      They initially sounded dark to me compared to other guitars that I have but the biggest issue was where I play the lights create hum with single coil pickups and it’s overwhelming. So if I wanted to play the guitar other then in my office, I had to find hum canceling P90s. I should have did a sound sample of the originals but I had pulled them out before I thought of doing the video. I believe this guitar is just not as bright as some of my other guitars even the way it is now, so I can’t really blame it on the original pups. Thanks for commenting!

      @Olegstuff21986 3 роки тому

      @@gregsteffey1266 Hm, interesting. I find the guitar to be quite bright, actually with these pups. I guess it depends on the amp, right? Do you mean bright when compared to e.g. a Strat? I'm sure you know this already, but using that dry switch can brighten up the sound a bit.
      Yeah, that sucks about the hum, I haven't experienced it luckily with my setup. I can compare the Revstar 502 with a Gretsch G2215 that I own and the Rev is definitely the brighter of the two by quite a bit.

    • @gregsteffey1266
      @gregsteffey1266  3 роки тому

      @@Olegstuff21986 Yeah interesting. This one is kinda dark and was not bright even with the original pickups so I guess it’s the wood. I have a few amps and multiple guitars from Telecasters to PRS Custom 24. I am now using a 66 Princeton and Friedman Runt 20 for amps. I run pedals and have to turn up the overdrive tone/treble when I swap to this guitar. There is sound samples in the other video. I would not consider the tone in that video very bright. I am glad though so I have a different sounding guitar. I don’t want them all to sound the same. For now I took out the push pull and added 1 Meg pots. I do like that original mod though.

      @@gregsteffey1266 That is strange, maybe something specific to the model you have? Obviously, not all guitars are created equal, even if it's the same guitar range/model. When I watched videos of 502 vs. the Revstar 620, 502 was definitely the brighter of the two, and yet the 620 was brighter than, say, a Les Paul. You certainly did a great job painting it, looks cool. I have that same shop black 502 but I like the colour.
      As for the original pups, I think they have a focussed sound overall, the neck pickup can get slightly muddy at times but I guess that's what often happens with neck pickups anyway and it can 'neutralised' to a good degree using the dry switch. So the SDs didn't brighten up the sound much, I guess they just made the guitar sound different?

    • @gregsteffey1266
      @gregsteffey1266  3 роки тому

      @@Olegstuff21986 yes these SDs are just different and a little clearer/ brighter. But it’s hard to compare single coils to hum canceling. One thing to note is I hear they have 250 pots from the factory. Just going to a 1 Meg volume would brighten up the originals. Maybe help that neck to be less muddy. Also a 500k push pull if the original is really a 250.

    All of this work - repainting, replacing pickups, etc, etc, etc .... why wouldn't you just buy a different guitar? The stock RS502/RS502T are fantastic. What a waste.

      Considering I sold it for twice what a new one costs I would say it worked out pretty well!

    • @gregsteffey1266
      @gregsteffey1266  2 роки тому +2

      I liked the guitar but wanted it in gold. The pickup change was more about hum canceling than just to change them. Where I play has bad lightning 60 cycle with single coils so the hum was too much. I enjoy tinkering with guitars.
