I hate it when a big brand just copies a strat or tele. There are an infinite number of original designs they could create and i think this Yamaha shape and design look great! I loved what you played in the black one!!!
@@KentBuchla Truth. Look at how long it’s taken Yamaha to gain acceptance as a legitimate choice for professional musicians. And this fellow here is one reason they are. Until one of their heroes plays one, most musicians won’t touch something unusual, even if it’s amazing. It’s another reason Brian May was so uniquely visionary. His circuit design in his own guitar is genius, and practically nobody has taken up any part of that design (except Yamaha! Note the way they use phase combinations for unique tones in these newer guitars). The entire guitar industry overlooks an incredible tonal palette because “it aint Fender.” Don’t get me wrong, Fender guitars are gorgeous. But they’re not the only possibility in the world.
Thta's usually the trademark I recommend when someone asks me advice about what instrument to choosefor a beginner. They're not really expensive, good quality instruments, imo.
I think they're a victim of brand bigotry of sorts, but on the flip side I guess we the consumers benefit from their lower price point. I've seen the same tendency outside of their guitar range.
I tried the much vaunted Pacifica but didn't like it. Thought the Squier at the same price looked and felt better. Massively overrated I think. Some of the low end Ibanez guitars seem much better too. But I do generally like and rate Japanese guitars and the first one in this video sounds sublime. Carlos Santana played a Yamaha back in the day - say no more! It/they looked similar but I think had names like 2000.
Good to see someone do guitar reviews in a clean setting instead of over driven distortion all the time, nice review, I've really had my eyes on these guitars for a while now.
I did come here via Paul Davids, but I am blown away by your playing, Chris: the dynamics, the rakes and texture of it all. Your solos are genuinely moving. After all 'this' has blown over, I really want to see you live.
I feel P90s sound so freaking romantic, i love the way they can go from being so silky smooth to being bitey, its the best ever, i love how sexy they sound, i could sit and listen to both clips of the P90s for hours upon hours
Okay, just finished the video. I had no idea who you are before, but your playing just completely transported me. My breathing changed. I listened to every note. Just gorgeous. And I think that I want P-90's in my next guitar now.
Those Revstars are Sweet. Yamaha gear has never let me down ever since my first in '83. Their guitars and basses have always been good quality and value whatever end of the market their models have been competing in. Quick mental inventory - 2x basses (6 string), 2x rack FX units, 1x CX5M music computer (Classic), 2x thin string guitars - one is a Line6 Variax but basically a Pacifica with toys. The best atmo is a Pacifica 611VFM with the Seymour Duncan pickups. Oh that SD P90 at the neck !!! Sweet. Even the basses that I sold on previously didn't go because they disappointed me, just that their function had been duplicated or superseded by new toys. GAS - you know how it is ...
Damn your playing is superb! I find a lot to Derek Trucks in the vocal-ish bends you do which is awesome. I though that could only be achieved with slide, it was dumb to overlook that, you nail it and combined with you own, super neat. Anyway, I was blown away by the Yamaha THR amps, they are so clever and I see that for sure the guitars will be the same, that green one is gorgeous!
oh man.... this could possibly be some of the most soulful playing I have ever heard. the control you play with is nothing short of amazing. 'twas... exquisite.
Man, your right hand technique is mesmerizing to watch ! And your sound... Gorgeous ! I wish I could fingerpick like this. Anyway, great guitars, I'm thinking about buying one for Christmas...
Out of the trillion guitar players out today, there are only a handful that play like Buck. The guitar is truly an extension of himself and his abilities. Rich, emotional and great sounding. P90's...
That's some nice playing, man! Love your technique and style! I recently bought 2 Revstars: First I got the 502. Later I saw an 820 and picked it up as well. Both guitars were on clearance at a local store. I guess they aren't selling well here in the US. I think I paid $379 for the 502 and $630 for the 820 - these prices are a steal for such nice instruments. They also had the 502T for about $400 and and 720 for around $500. I would have bought all of them if it wouldn't started proceeding for a divorce. Anyway, these are great guitars, on par with my Tele Pro. I also have a Pacifica 311 which is my "beater" guitar - it plays great too.
Hey Chris! I just recently took up playing guitar after years of playing Bass, Sax and Trumpet. I bought a Yamaha 112 for $200 Australian. It is a very basic model and to be honest I am blown away with the build quality and the tones are just staggering. I honestly feel like I have been ‘Yamaha’d’ and don’t see myself moving to any other brand. I will move up the range asI progress. Will keep you posted. Thanks for your amazing talent. Clearly you are Yamaha’d too !!
Excellent playing man. UA-cam has waaaaay too many metalhead shredders that just erks me to no end. You have some serious vibe in your playing. I really enjoyed listening and watching you workout those Revstars. Very cool. The P90's in those guitars sound really nice . Not harsh like a lotta others. I'm going to nab a Pacifica 112V in the gray when they're released. In the meantime, I just might have to invest in one of the Revstars. Thanks for the sweet jams man.
Nice overview, and some tasteful playing. I have the 620 and 720B; the outstanding feature for me is the the necks-a good handful perfectly matched with the fretboard radius and jumbo frets. I love these things, and I have been playing Yamaha guitars since I bought my first, an FG180 in 1969, from Ivor Mairants Musicentre in London. Thanks.
I thought I was through with buying guitars (yeah yeah, I know), but I really love the way these guitars look and sound...such a simple design, yet modern and elegant. As soon as they make a gold-top (not Mayan) with p-90s, I will most likely pull the trigger...
My road bass for many years was a Yamaha RBX300. Inexpensive, light, simply built, amazing sound, beautiful fast neck, reliable and a looker for the times.
Went old school and picked up a 2nd hand shop black 502 just today. What a GREAT guitar... p90s and wrap aroumd bridge. I have strats, LP and PRS. BUT the tones and feel of the 502 is incredible, i absolutely love it.. Christened it by putting it through the helix, bit of harmonic tremolo on and cranking "Warm love". But its worked in any scenario i put it through. Can definitely see how chris gets those sparkly tones and warmth. Easily the most resonant of all my guitars.
Wow . Just mesmerized by that right hand technique , switching from pick to fingers with the amazing tone he squeezes from fingers and sliding notes . Can tell a great and musical player if you can instantly recognise his playing style from just a few notes. Reminds me a bit of Tommy Emmanuels electric playing for some reason and never sacrifices speed for musicality.
I’ve just got a 502T in green like yours and I never thought a bridge pickup would sound sweet to my ears. I liked it over a new Standard with humbuckers. It’s an amazingly well made instrument! Thanks a lot for your awesome playing!
That last solo is sublime. eloquent and subtle. bravo. Yamaha have a long history of making great guitars that punch above their class; the 60's and 70's acoustics are brilliant. The new Red Line acoustics are half price compared to other premium brands. I need a P90 revstar!
I bought a Gibson SG. It arrived with its Fretboard separating from the neck at the nut. I really wanted a basic double cutaway mahogany guitar. Didn’t work out too well. I’m now impatiently waiting for an RS820CR to arrive to replace it.😁
I have a rs820cr coming too in "rusty rat" color :D Should be here in 3 or 4 days! Just bought it friday evening used on reverb with upgraded locking tuners for $715
Brock Davisson I’m happy with mine! The pickups are amazing! I’ve been building and modding for a long long time. These pickups are so responsive and dynamic. They did a great job designing them for this guitar. My tuning machines work great, curious why and what they upgraded your to.
That is awesome to hear! Which color you get? They upgraded these to hip-shot locking tuners but original tuners still coming with it. I can't wait to play it!!
I love my Revstar 502T with those excellent P90's and overall, it's built extremely well. I still own a Fender strat, tele, and a Gibson semi-hollow (ES330) body guitar but the Revstar is different enough to compliment my collection.
Agreed! I'm obviously a massive Strat fan but the 502T is among the nicest guitars I own, both sonically and in terms of playability. It's mad to think you can pick one up for £500! Great guitars.
I have been shopping for some P90 guitars and completely forgot about these Yamaha’s. Your playing and tones are really on top of it, I’m really considering into buying now.
Hi Chris, I've been keeping an eye on the Revstar series and I ended up buying a 502 mainly because of this video. I found a bargain on an online shop far from my town and I just bought it without even trying it... Well, I couldn't be more happy with it. Playability is amazing, out of the box the set up was remarkable and of course the sound... So much definition. And the fact that it costed 519 euros, including a nice gigbag and elixir strings... I'm still amazed. If it was a Gibson, I would have to pay at least twice for the same quality...
I have seen a few very good UA-cam guitar players doing pedal demos with these guitars and was intrigued. I came across a 502T in a music store and picked it up and was impressed with the feel and built quality. I use to play in bands professionally but I haven’t been playing guitar for quite a long time because of an illness in my family but just playing around with this guitar just something about its vibe and sound unplugged made me want to play again. I may have to talk myself into going back to buy it. These are very good guitars don’t let their simple looks make you think there not worth a play.
You sir sounds ridiculously amazing! First time watching you play and i instantly fell in love with your style. The guitars sounds amazing too! Too much wow in one video. Wished I could give more than one like
Been a yamaha fan for a long long time. Always loved the old SGs but have been a proud owner of an SA1200s for a good number of years and have played quite a few of their late 70s and 80s instruments and have always been blown away by their quality and the tones! So much so that I recently got my mits on a RPS20CR revstar and it's just such a complete instrument. Tone for days, great feel and build quality. I'll probs have to get a p90 one if I'm honest
Like it or not you have genuinely influenced me to buy a Revstar. Probably wouldn’t have known about them had it not been for your channel. All in a good way they look really appealing and I’m sure I’ll be adding one to the family soon 🤘🏻
I own a couple of Yamaha acoustics and didn't even know this guitar existed. From what I have gathered it looks beautiful, sounds really clean, and is fairly priced when compared to the leading industry brands. I want one....
Had been looking for a guitar that could do what my 1984 San Dimas Jackson could not - really wanted something that had a completely different tone range - happened across these and was very impressed - I'm left handed and unfortunately no P90 option so I have ordered those directly from Yamaha along with some additional bits and cream pick guard for good measure - everything you said is true - there really is some magic in these and their in house P90's
When I was in middle and high school, I played baritone saxophone in the band. My instrument issued to me was a Yamaha YBS-52 and they were absolutely fantastic instruments. Between three different instruments, I never once had an issue that left me stranded. Sounded beautiful, looked great, great craftsmanship, dead reliable (and I was hard on my instruments back then.) And while baritone saxes are expensive, it wasn't even their high end model. Seems like Yamaha is good at just about everything 😂
I just ordered my second Revstar, an RSP02T. If I could spec out my own custom Revstar, I would ask for an inverted headstock and a wrap-around bridge. On the Revstar after that I would ask for something a Nashville Tele with a Tele bridge and Strat pickup.
I just bought a brand new RS502 in shop black! I was going to get the RS420 but I watched this video and now it's 4-5 long days before my 502 arrives. BUT working from home in isolation - gonna be plenty of time to play it! Thank you for the review :)
I've got the grey one with the bigsby. I call her the Grey Lady after my late wife. I have a picture of her on the headstock. Love the sound of that guitar.
Own a SA2100 which is of the ES335 school (stock) translucent cherry with factory coil taps on the volume pots, massively carved back and top, wide fret board with binding and on body, acoustically resonant…. It’s old, as I’ve owned for 30 years yet in excellent condition except the Gold hardware has lifted variously on all, but and it’s from mid-80s and was convinced by my friend who owned a music store in Delray Beach, that this was superior to the Gibson ES335 that he sold (official Gibson dealer) it was always his go to guitar when he was showing me new pedals and amps he had in, so I had to have it….
I know the first one I picked up I was very impressed with how solid it felt and the detail, I don’t remember there being any sharp edges or anything, just really nice to play
Man, great playing. A lot of guys are only showing off, but forget to make music. Your playing is all heart and soul.
Agreed, and a master of light and shade 😎🎸✅
More tasteful playing than 99% of demos out there.
@@Moyetniishiswa2000 I don’t disagree with you haha

Revstar 502: 9:26
I have loved the vibe of the recent Revstar line. I need to give one a serious test drive after watching this. Thanks

Thank you!
i picked up a yak yak yak in nova scotia 4 days ago. Rocks!
The RS820CR (humbuckers) is amazing too

Great tasteful playing 👍🏻
Nice playing
That grime on the P90 guitar neck you can definitely tell is been loved a lot!
Great expressive playing!
Man you are classy player. Amazing
becraul Thank you so much ☺️
You are a beautiful player - the guitars sound wonderful x
Thank you very much Pete :)
I just bought a brand new RS502 in shop black! I was going to get the RS420 but I watched this video and now it's 4-5 long days before my 502 arrives. BUT working from home in isolation - gonna be plenty of time to play it! Thank you for the review :)
Awesome! Thanks for letting me know, Thomas. The 502 is my favourite in the range :)
Hey man, you can put one more notch in your Yamaha belt, I just ordered the shop black one 👍🏻😊
I've got the grey one with the bigsby. I call her the Grey Lady after my late wife. I have a picture of her on the headstock. Love the sound of that guitar.
Absolutly great playing
I love my yamahas (620 and 720). That includes my classical acoustic. Thank you for posting!
Love your playing dude! From Malaysia.
Such great soulful playing and feel. Enjoyed those demos.
I know the first one I picked up I was very impressed with how solid it felt and the detail, I don’t remember there being any sharp edges or anything, just really nice to play
