Really helpful to actually see the desolder/solder on the power switch. I was pretty lost with that until I saw this video. Now my GBC works again. Thanks!
great video! I brought these power switches before also, it was a right pain figuring out how to connect them ahahah glad i wasnt the only one to suffer
Have you seen what must be the newer V2 switches? I have only found them on eBay. Try searching "Power Switch V2.0 Replacement For GBC Game Boy Color Game Console" , it appears you can just take the old on off and drop the new one in place with fresh solder. I plan on using them when they finally arrive (30+ days since order) tomorrow. I'm new to GBC restoration, and this video helped me a lot. I have very little electronics knowledge, so showing the resistor/ what parts work helped me diagnose my power switch problem. Great video, thanks.
So glad this helped you out! That switch you found looks like a great option and should definitely make your life easier than the finicking I had to do here. Cheers!
Hi! That is a solder wick which is just fine copper wires braided together. It's used to clean up solder. The solder will flow readily into the braided copper enabling you to get it off of the circuit board.
Best part of the video was you holding the switch with the tweezers and shooting that bad boi off like a virgin at prom night. Also, keeping up the tradition of slapping that cartridge in the slot.
Replaced mine today. Just a question for you tho, I was successful and I got the power switch replaced but now my problem is it’s stuck on and I have to take a battery out for it to shut off. What could he the issue thanks ! And thanks for the great video
The switch slides up and down normally but both positions leave the unit powered on? If that's happening you may have shorted some pads on the switch, or the switch itself has an internal short. Very unlikely but not impossible is that there is a short on the board itself, which means it would turn on even if the switch were de-soldered entirely. All of these potential issues can be tested with a multimeter.
At 6:31 - Immediately left adjacent to Pad C there are three ring shaped pads (called vias) and they all connect to C. Pad 2 is just a dead pad used for strain relief so it doesn't matter electrically if you connect here. Pad 3 also has three vias right above it that can be used. Pad 1 only has one via to the upper right of it which can be used. You can see the finished job at 8:12 where the connections are made using the vias as I described above (I had to do it like this since the switch was so small), notice how I don't even use Pad 2 and that the 3rd and 4th switch pins are both connected to Pad 3. The large pads on the left and right ends also offer no electrical connection, these are just for strain relief. The 1st switch pin must connect to Pad 1 and the 2nd switch pin must connect to Pad C without any shorts between them. Hope that helps!
@@FantasticQuack thank you so much I have lifted pads on mine so I'm going to bridge some wires and then put a switch on it, this is the only video I have found with a similar issue to mine
pin 2 is "dead" just meaning it's a bare pad not connected to anything, so it's electrically useless, but it does mechanically provide some extra strain relief for the connector.
Really depends on condition and the buyer. Anywhere from $60 - $80 is the rough price range for a decent condition loose unit. If you buy locally you can usually get better deals like $40 or $50, but requires more patience. The price may go up a bit in the next few years, but I wouldn't expect a huge increase.
@@FantasticQuack Thank for the heads up. A pawn shop has a grape color for 50$ it has the battery cover but the lens is pretty scratch. On a local buy and sell there is a clear purple and kiwi Green both are in really good condition asking price is 80$. It's starting to get out of hand where I live. Appreciate the help.
@@OnGod1007 I'd say just keep patient and checking facebook market / craigslist. A little less than a year ago I picked this one up for $60 just by keeping my eyes open for deals: www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/jxiv9m/facebook_find_from_today_love_this_thing/
A couple of my older videos have this same 1-sided audio issue due first to me being an amateur, and second not noticing the problem when editiing because I was using PC speakers instead of headphones.
Yeah, a number of my videos have audio coming mostly on one side or something which took me way too long to notice since I wasn't editing with headphones. Rookie mistake. I've fixed it since my last few vids and into the future.

Thanks man I'm glad this helped you!
Your voice kind of remind me of Ray Liotta's narration in Goodfellas, heheh. Thanks for the video, this is incredibly helpful!
I'll take that as a compliment and am glad I could help!

Thanks man! Definitely a finicky job.

Perfect video, I now know what switch to look for. Thank you.
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Hi, i have a question, what is this that you used that it's looks like copper in the minute 5:20

Your video helped me so much you are awesome i love that diagram saved me time having to look that up
Glad to hear it!

Not sure if anyone would notice that part, good eye! Edit: Also, I don't think I've ever put a gameboy game in gently my entire life lol

Hi nice video it's really helpful!!
I'm facing the same problem with the swich but I can't find the link. By wich name did you search this component?
Thanks! Try this one: www.aliexpress.com/item/4001197791390.html?spm=a2g0s.12269583.0.0.37fe2603ONGf4x
Loved it. Keep it coming.
Glad to hear and thanks for the kind words!
Is there a way to just get the plastic part of the switch?
Probably definitely not is my guess
What’s funny is I’m currently having the same problem with gbc that just happens to be the same color as that one
I think this was a somewhat common problem on GBC. Hope this helped you out!
Great vid!
Thank you!
Are you able to put out the pin traces as I have a gbc I'm trying to repair but has lifted pads on 2 and 3

Do you have any switches?
Sorry m8 I already sent my spares to other subscribers
thanks!! alsoo I feel like the luminosity of my gameboy is really looow idk how I can fix that
Glad you enjoyed! I've never seen that problem but it could be a capacitor issue.

so pin 2 is dead? is it useless?

Man do u still have the switches? Could u ship me
I do and I can. Check my channel info and email me your shipping address and I'll get a few sent your way.
Anybody's opinion what is that Gameboy Color worth? And will the prices on these go up?

Great video but i dont get how you resisted the urge to scrub that bad boy. FILTHY.
Thank you! To put your heart at ease, you should know I did clean it up--just off camera to keep the video length more reasonable.
Jesus Christ I thought my headphones were broken
