I believe that the Hunters in Bloodborne generally want too be as close as possible to what they are hunting in order to be sprayed by the blood from their prey. In the game this serve as a healing mechanic for taking damage and I believe there is something similar in the lore as well.
From what I understand the old blood also gives beasts regenerative abilities which causes bulletholes to close too quickly making guns ineffective against them, which is why melee weapons are used, they need to bleed the beasts dry making death by a thousand cuts the most effective way to deal with beasts
The beasts of bloodborne were far more durable and regenerative, in order to kill the beasts of bloodborne the hunters needed to be fast and get in and deal as much damage as possible. Clean slices were healed too quickly, so the saw was designed to literally rip the beasts apart. As for the the closed state it was meant for the tight alleys of the city streets.
I'd say that the obvious reason for the trick weapon's modality is the extreme levels of variation in both the physiology of the beasts the hunters fight, and the variety of conditions they fight them in. It (theoretically) allows hunters to be prepared for fighting both big and small and armored and unarmored beasts in tight alleys, small rooms, and big open courtyards with whatever type of weapon is best suited for the situation without having to carry twice as much weight on them at any given time.
One thing they brought up about the short range, is that you could punch the opponent. However punches don't usually do good against flesh, sure if you hit someone hard enough you can break a bone, and if you do a proper gut punch you can basically explode their kidney because it's a really weak organ. However if you're going up against a fleshy thing, like a stomach, or something cloth like like a padded gambeson. Sure it's serrated so it will get caught by the cloth, and The Cutting part is in the extended form. However the four words folded in would you good against flesh, and that would be an advantage over simply crunching the opponent
I alvays look the folded variants as a emergency defense. If i beast leap at you it still posible to hurt it. A spear not too usefullwhen you grapling with something.
Additionally it is a terrible cutting weapon (as evident here) because the hunters want to hemorrhage beasts to death as they are sustained by blood during rally and visceral attacks. Hence the more gripping and crude tearing of saw teeth instead of a honed blade.
@@Bersh-xq4jy Yes and no. The hunter's aren't actually sustained by the beast's blood and viscera. The developers have outright said the rally system is about morale. You feel reassured when you see yourself making a big chunk of progress, so you can push yourself to fight on just a little more. The reason they want to cause as much blood loss as possible is more akin to bloodletting. The beasts lost their humanity due to imbibing tainted blood, so you need to get the blood out of their system to cure them, or kill them in the attempt.
Morale has to do with blood echoes. The blood from the beasts still has blood echoes which invigorate the hunter, not by consumption but by absorbing the echoes within the blood. Canonically, hunters that dream cannot really die until they lose their blood echoes. This is why your echoes are left where you died. They are what gives a hunter morale. You can see this also with other items, such as Blue Elixir, which can only be used by hunters as their superior will via blood echoes maintains their consciousness and prevents them from fading into nothing. The implication being that a non hunter drinking the elixir would just fade out of existence. @@rolandswift4311

I was pleasantly surprised to see you got the quick folding mechanism built pretty much as intended, which is the one part you'll need to get right for many of BB's weapons. I was also relieved that it wasn't randomly closing in on itself as it was swung around, like, you weren't even wearing a full helmet, like you knew it wouldn't accidentally close!
Lore wise (and even in gameplay) Traditional weapons like Swords and Guns weren't very effective against the Beasts of Yharnem, however saws were especially effective at ripping through beasthide

Love the Saw Spear, was my first consistent weapon in the game. As far as the points of failure, that’s where the scale of the saw spear and the trick mechanic solve those concerns. Your version was about 1/2-3/4 scale in comparison. That scale leaves more space for your hand (fingies) and gives more reach while closed. The locking lever/trigger used in game clamps into the blade when extended and is an elongated piece to give it more reinforcement. I get concerns about failure at the pivot point, but with a larger and thicker blade comes a sturdier pin system. Over time the locking system could wear down, but when you have the Hunter’s Workshop to return to, you can repair as many times as needed.
The closed form, lore wise, is purely for up close fighting, specifically with beasts. So monsters with claws, in the specific instance of going one to one with a monster. The open form is for groups of monsters. The Saif is similar, and people generally use it up close in closed form where it's difficult for the monster to pounce or swipe at you as you dance around it. Since Hunters (like the player character) are basically vampires, the weapons are also visceral in order to produce blood that splashes all over the attacker. The echoes within the blood are absorbed by the attacker, healing and strengthening them. So, going up close and personal, with zero reach, is actual of benefit to a Hunter, who can heal from all the blood coming out of the beast as they tear into it. Lorewise, these weapons were designed to kill beasts, not people. Weapons like the gun rapier and gun spear are better suited for that.
Part of the BB game logic for Saw Cleaver/Spear is that the "closed" position or un-transformed, the point is that it's meant for beasts and not humans. And the beasts are very quick, closing distance on you rapidly. So a very close range weapon you can swing quickly is needed.
Well as for being close enough to punch them it’s because your meant to be hunting beasts larger then you that are hyper aggressive and in your face so your almost always in that range and if you want a weapon specifically for human fighting the blades of mercy exist
@@Skylancer727 I don't see how that logic holds up. Them deciding to not stay exclusive indefinitely is a relatively recent occurrence. It took about 4 years for GoW 2018 to be released to PC, same for Ghost of Tsushima, and GoW:Ragnarok is slated to come to PC about 3 years after its original release. The only reason it would _require_ a remaster is if they have lost the original code (or whatever excuse they come up with) and have to re-create the game the same way demon souls was when it released to PC.
It's always awesome to see you use the lathe in most of your fabrication, but it was extra cool that you broke out the mill. Machining always takes the build to the next level. One of your best builds so far. Keep it up dude, love the content 👍
Closed position probably would be useful to have when specifically in close quarters, presuming you made use of the grip and instead of using it like a knuckle duster, maybe hold it closer to the base. The saw teeth on the outside then would probably work better if they were sharpened on the "backs", so instead of trying to use them to have the teeth bite into stuff, you swung the weapon like they do in the game, in which case those saw teeth on the outside would basically act like tiny blades doing a lot of shallow "tip cuts", basically. Or even just the consideration that being a more sizable chunk of metal ingame, even closed in they'd be pretty sturdy bonking implements. And when closed, you have the blade better braced so that you're less likely to damage the mechanism when striking something rigid. - Then you can extend them for when you have the room, want the extra reach and then you can make use of that little bit of sharp edge towards the tip.
What I've noticed, is that in the art of the sawspear the serrations themselves seem to be sharpened individually on the inside and outside, so they'll cut and saw simultainiously, no matter in which direction they're used (they almost look like a very sharp bread knife to me). Which is perfect for the letting of tainted blood (cutting and tearing flesh simultainiusly), the beast hunts revolve around. I'd really love to see you come back to that weapon at a later date, when you have the time to sharpen all those serrations and test it again.
For most mechanisms they really only need to be fast for the shortening version. Most weapons seem to be designed as a weapon for fighting beasts in plazas and squares that can be shortened once the beast is in a back alley for the kill.
But with that being said, I think it would be cool to see the blade of mercy or at least test the concept of two knives that use a dovetail in the handles to combine. Here's are a bit too curvy and over the top, but is seems viable at least. If a bit unnecessary
The weapons of Bloodborne are largely designed with that ripping serration of larger targets in mind. The closed saw spear acts as a blade for broad surface cutting tendons and muscle, while the extended blade is perfect for shredding vitals when piercing with the barbed teeth.
If you want an extra cool folding/transforming weapon, take a look at the Switch Axe from Monster Hunter (Axe which has a sword blade on the back that slides to the front, and the axe head slides to the bottom to attempt to balance the weight in sword mode). Although the phial abilities are mostly impossible, the transforming aspect of the weapon would be really interesting to see. The Charge Blade would be neat too, but that would be way more dangerous, complicated, and expensive to try to make a functioning version of.
The closed mode of the saw-spear is to fight ravaging beasts that are not going to allow you to use your reach for long. Having the spear switch to being a bladed fist type weapon allows you to more easily strike at zero range. Imagine a werewolf leaping on top of you and you have a spear with you. You failed to skewer the werewolf as he leapt and now your spear's shaft is only useful as a stick to hold off the wolf's jaws. Now instead imagine that you have this saw-spear and switch to a saw mode. Now, instead of simply holding the wolf's jaw at bay, you can also saw its jaw off with your shortened weapon. Essentially, it's a weapon designed to allow reach when fighting an opponent at close range, or fight a grappling foe at basically no range.
interestingly, the problem of reach is why the Saw Spear and Saw Cleaver are lower tier weapons in bloodborne, because of their lack of reach in the folded position, you quite often will have to put yourself into a position where you are prone to be countered. By lore, I think the saw type weapons are made specifically for ripping through the toughened hides of beast-like monsters, where more refined blades would have some sort of issue. In a similar manner, the folded position isn't for engagements against more robust weapons, but for quick attacks against ambushers in narrow streets, where the extended weapon 'should' have less viability. Really though, all the lore in the world doesn't make up for the actual issues some trick weapons present, and you can hilariously see those problems in real time in the game.
@@procow2274 regardless of arguments people make, both weapons are ones you can pick up either at the start of the game, or very early into it, thus, they are low tier. @@dapperspider3766 Low Tier is for joke weapons like the torch or Broken Straight Sword. Fromsoft likes to make the starting and early weapons very solid based on the assumption that some players just won't pick up anything else. Each of these are absolute worldbeaters you can get within ten minutes of crawling out of character creation.
@@semi-useful5178 please... please do not correct me when I have laid out my criteria for how I (subjectively) determine weapon tiers. As I have said already I tier things in games based upon WHEN you get them, not by how effective they are, and even then. While you are 'capable' of beating the game with said weapons even at maximum level, the Saw cleaver is only C/D/-/C, making it middling at best even in strength based tiers. You forget, that what makes the weapon effective is not its strength, but the fact that it can be useful in a number of builds without much effort put into your own stats, making it a generalist weapon. However, without being specialized, there are a number of later enemies, and a great many bosses, it is not effective or even useful against, where other weapons are much better and higher rated, that you get in those same areas.
@@dapperspider3766 there are three problems here. 1) you're wrong and they absolutely ARE among the best weapons in the game including lategame and endgame, 2) they lose out in STRENGTH scaling when compared to STRENGTH weapons but this isn't a problem because they're quality weapons. obviously if you have nothing but strength a strength weapon would win out. it's pretty clear your personal experience with these weapons lategame was trying to use them with a build that doesn't suit them, which says very little about the weapons and a lot about you. 3) just about nobody uses "low tier" the way you do. if you insist on using it that way then it's really on you to accept that your deliberately confusing terminology is likely going to confuse people *edit to expand a little. you have this strange idea that these are "generalist weapons." they're not. they're quality weapons. while it's true that due to having split str/dex scaling they can be slotted into a str build or a dex build and still somewhat function, you're implying that they can never become more powerful than that. basically you're saying that because they're split scaling they don't reward a high stat investment... but they do, they just reward you putting points into both stats. you could argue that quality weapons require a very high stat investment since you want both, and that would be a fair reason to not use them if you're super married to having bloodtinge or arcane in your build, in fact it's why i usually don't use quality weapons much, but if you make the sacrifice to actually build around these weapons, you get a combination of very decent scaling (1.0, which is similar to an A-rank scaling in one stat), serration, good motion values on a versatile moveset, and a very very high attack speed. in short, they absolutely shred.
Alright this is awesome. I'm kinda excited to see how you build the Amigdalan Arm, Which is basically a Club/ Mallet mixed with a sharpened claw on a whip. (JK though. I know you meant "Make them all" as in the weapons in your poll.) But, On another note. The weapon from bloodborne that I think would actually be the most practical and function are: #1- The Hunters Axe (Because it's basicslly a Dane Axe with a extendable/ telescoping handle.) #2- The Church pick (which in it's 1 hand form it would function sort of like a gladius and in its 2 handed form it be sort of like a war pick.) But, My favorites are: #1 Beasthunter Saif #2 The Holy moonlight sword ( Because, In it's untransformed mode. It's basicslly a bastard sword.) #3 Burial Blade. Because it's move set is just so fun and cool.
Great video, only thing I would like to point out, is I understand in the closed position it feels more normal to almost punch with it, but possibly in the next trick weapon videos try swinging it like they do in the games to see the effectiveness that way as well
its all about the use in tight spots, i think that IS the point of the short range one. Bloodborne has a lot of situations where folks run up close to you to attack, getting right into your face which with a fully extended sword would be harder to bring to bear than a dagger or shortened weapon.
That sawspear looks GNARLY and the damage it can inflict is just as nuts. Reminds me of shark teeth - sharp enough to cut, but jagged to rip and tear flesh. Nasty piece of work! From a bloodborne universe perspective they've apparently mastered locking blades and it will never break, and the hunters have also mastered being able to flick them open and closed on demand. If this was possible IRL you could get some extra ooph by flicking it open and closed on your strikes, just like in the game. Since this is reality though the mechanisms will break, and it's evident that having a longer blade will be more useful 9 out of ten times.
A thing to consider with all hunter weapons is the enemy you're expected to go up against and the environment in which the fight will take place. They're meant primarily for mindless beasts on the streets of fantasy london. Tight quarters and pure overwhelming offense. The extended setting is for when you have the space both around you and between you and the enemy for the reach to be effective and the retracted setting is for when you're either fighting in a space that's either too tight for long weapons to be as effective as shorter ones or the beast is already right up in your face and refuses to relent. A situation where what's essentially a more gnarly knuckleduster would actually be preferable. We also see that the retracted position is the prefered setting for after-death dismemberment(just in case) but i'll admit i don't actually know if that would be more effective or not from a biomechanical perspective.
if you hold it at the ends of the handle instead of the middle you might have some more reach, though it seems super dangerous for your fingers to be even closer to the blades.
so I have a couple thoughts. The biggest is that these weapons are designed to fight things that are very heavy and unlikely to move so ultimately testing with things that are loosely standing there like the pool noodle doesnt seem to be very... Verisimilitude? while people will jump out of the way when hit they arent gonna bounce away when hit. Translating things from the game though, theres a hidden stat for weapons called Tear. The beasts are said to have a lot of regenerative capabilities so something that tears would be harder to heal from than a smooth cut (tear deals extra damage to beasts, which is why the Saw Spear and Saw Cleaver feel so strong). Beasts are also fast so it's less a question of "How close do I have to be to use the closed mode" and more "How close is the enemy when I attack", having a whole blade length of teeth usable even at punching range is a great way to be able to fight something thats faster than you, while being able to extend it to full sword length gives you proper combat strength even when one or the other makes some distance. As for the hinge mechanism, with respect to everyone I've seen make these things, the weapons in Bloodborne are chunky, the blade on the Saw Spear and Cleaver look like their a finger thick, let alone the hinge, so I dont think they're in much danger of flopping around nor breaking. Given how they sound when opening and closing I'm inclined to say the hinge is probably very tight as well. HOWEVER, I can defend the hinge on a physics basis. The change attack has you swing the weapon while extending or retracting it, this would create a whipping effect kinda like how a flail works, resulting in, based on these tests, a truly horrifying strike
I think it would be good if you are in close combat because of being swarmed by a horde of people. You would definitely get covered in blood like the game wants you to. It looks like the functionality is in the fact that you would have a large chance of being ambushed by your prey. Like you said at @12:15, when you get ambushed or something drops down on you you can quickly defend with it in the closed position. Then once you get distance you can open it up to take them on at a distance. You could also use the closed position to quickly take out weaker prey and then move on.
11:40 the shorter mode is probably intended for use in tight spaces such as alleyways and corridors, the in game version is about three times the size of yours and the handle is quite long. Seeing you hold it right by the mechanism and complaining about the reach is like watching someone complain about the reach of an axe while holding it by the head, granted the saw is quite close to your hands but you can still hold it a bit further down without issue.
I watch you on Shadiversity, I like your approach the most. If only all youtube content was this direct, sincere, and straight to the point. Love ya. Btw, I dont know if it is intended or unavoidable because of the camera, but it seems to me that the colour in the video is to too saturated, or the contrast is too high. Combination of both maybe. Love the WD40 in the background though.
The closed option is for enclosed closets, alleyways, and dark gothic spaces. Way better than just having your fists. You're also saw/tearing your monster foe's natural bullet and stab and slash proof armor off.
Funny thing is I mained this exact weapon. Saw spear is under rated 8:02 since some of the monsters had longer appendages than you it helped to close in super close to hack and slash at their torso. Plus as you take damage you heal as you deal damage so the weapon really completes with the mechanics in mind. The extended Saw spear was good for keeping them at bay. Practical use in real life wouldn't be that high since you'd surely break it from constant form switches. My God is this for sale ?! 😭 Its so cool !
for the spear and saw, you could probably make a tang extended with the blade that is locked into the shaft of the weapon extended, so its not just the pin taking stress when using it. maybe also some kind of locking point from the end of the blade so stress is distributed to the lower part of the shaft in folded position, from one side of the shaft to the other (i think this is why the game model has that specific curve, so theres space and it wont crunch your hands when stress on it)
I think part of it’s practicality has to so with what a hunter is expected to hunt. Beasts that comes in close and can heal from thin cuts, and slimy aberrations. Humans don’t wear a lot of armor. And keep in mind that the element of blood is vital to the setting. So IRL its not too practical but within the setting it is where blood provides the healing mechanic you see when you’re aggressive
there are two things for the close position First you can heal if you (hunters) get blood in your wounds. this might be some of the reasons why you would want to get close to get blood in your wounds and heal second there are a lot of tight spaces in Yharnam to the point where it would almost be unpractical to have a long weapon.
i believe the purpose of the closed trick weapons is for "stealth" (hear me out). in the earliest days of the beast plague, the church hunters went to hunt beasts in the secrecy of the night. so, having a weapon you could hide in your coat but still fight with if you were attacked before you could fully deploy it would be EXTREMELY useful. then after the hunters went public, as the plague could no longer be kept under wraps, it was how the workshop was used to making weapons so they just never stopped. Edit: Once the hunters went public, they obviously would keep the weapons they already had on hand, which would then become synonymous with church hunters in the eyes of the public. They would then likely keep making trick weapons because that is what people expected to see when the church hunters rolled up to save the city.
The reason for the mechanism it is simple really. Many beasts have different toughness to different things and the city itself. Many beasts's flesh are so tough that the hunters need to make multiple little cuts to make sure the wounds don't close. The city Yharnam itself has thin alleyways and small areas the beasts like to hide. Last the hunters are literally assassins who need to kill without being seen so the shorter the weapon the easier to hide.
Great video, nice job on making the weapon. I just have some suggestion to you if you want to make an upgarded model of the bloodborn trick weapons. Could be interesting to see. I think if the saw blade was a normal blade it could be good too when closed. Because the teeth get caught in what you cut which make the wound look nastier but less deep and it can stop the blade itself. Also, you made it out of a saw blade. Saw are quite thin, so they are pretty light. If there was more weight, chopping attacks with it would be more effective and help with cutting too because of inertia. But the weight would be harder to balance between both "mode". For use cases when closed, it remind me of a kung fu weapon: the crescent moon knife just without the points at both ends. It could be used in the same way i guess if it was toothless. Anyway, its just some suggestion and it was the first video of you i saw (pun intended). Hyped to see the next in the serie ;)
The Beasthunter Saif is bad ass, but you gotta admit the Beast Cutter is epic. To be honest with you, almost all the weapons in Bloodborne are awesome, but the Cutter and Boom Hammer are probably my favs
I played through the entire game with the saw cleaver in closed position, the attack speed is what did it for me. Also the serrated edge makes it highly effective against beasts.
So the Folding weapon actually makes sense when you understand what it was used for and where. First rule of considering a weapon try to understand the context surrounding it. For Bloodborne the hunters were going through the Streets of Yharnam this means tight spaces where a full sized weapon could work against you. Enemies also were fast and vicious meaning bigger weapons worked against them as the speed was a factor. So the Folding weapons were meant to handle areas where fighting in tight spaces with quick fast enemies. Its a plot point the Hunters were Baffled by the Church building the bigger heavier weapons like they knew something the hunters didnt, which they VERY much did. Hunters were also aiming to get splattered with Blood as Blood is more potent then wine to them so the in close sawing weapon makes sense as you are assured to be soaked using it. And finally many of the Hunters were not actually warriors Gehrman the First Hunter was originally a normal person who noticed the Beast plague then modified his tools and clothing to work better against what he was facing so the design idea of the weapons was taking what was originally just tools or common items then modifying them to make them Hunter tools and weapons. So the Context of their use, creation, and the aim for fighting the beasts by the Hunters explain why the Folded weapons had the folded part in the first place.
Reach is why I like the hunter axe it goes from a short axe to a long axe, nice and simple. Good flow close quarters where a long pole would be cumbersome and good for more open places to deliver heavier strikes with greater reach. The most mundane and therefore practical of the bloodborne weapons.
Ofc the saw aspect is more of a fantasy thing but I think something that could make it a bit more practical would be to give it a kris/flamberge style edge. Additionally if there was a spike on the backwards facing side of the blade that could tuck into the handle like a pseudo-tang while it's unfolded that would give it a bit more practicality in the folded position. It's meant to be a close up dagger like weapon when its folded so why not emphasize what daggers are really good at. Overall I like the build its very faithful to the game and it looks killer but I'm just brainstorming ideas to make the concept of a saw spear a bit less inept
I also presume that.. THICKER metal brackets and joining parts might add stability and increase functionality? You did a great job, and holy moly that thing IS Gnarly.
To be fair about the Saw Spear, it was a mass produced weapon used by all kinds of hunters (mainly Workshop). Plus the saw weapons are designed for anyone to pick up and be able to use against the beasts and thats another thing as well is that hunter weapons were not designed for people in mind, unless its the Blade of Mercy, but beasts, so guarding and moves that would be effective against people aren't used against beasts since beasts are faster, stronger, and more durable. Trick Weapons weren't designed to be weapons against people, killing them as quick as possible, but against monsters, to tear into their flesh and bleed them out. Just something to think about when making the next trick weapon.
I mean, gameplay-wise the advanatage to staying close is that many beasts are very large, and also much slower than a Hunter, not to mention not as intelligent as one. Meaning it's the equivalent of getting on top of someone with a spear for example, it makes it harder for them to manouver and hit you than if you were farther away. That's the most realistic explanation I can give for why you have dodge into attacks in the game all the time.
Honestly, I always preferred the keep the cleaver closed. Range was much less important with the agility of the Hunter to get close so I needed to get in quick strikes to do damage and get out, although the trick axe was the first weapon I finished the game with.
Really cool video again, and don't worry, I didn't mind the Dora thing. 🤣 Musical greetings from Belgium, Gunther (singer and lyrics writer of Gabriel Scar)
the saw spear you made is almost a one to one recreation (minus the size) but in my honest opinion the saw spear needs (this for both irl and in game) more rows of teeth on the outside edge, also in game logic for the close position is for beast because of their fur/skin, the open is for the eldritch gods in their world
To add on to everyone else's explanations of why the closed saw form is practical, it should be remembered that blood ministration in Bloodborne imparts superhuman strength, speed and stamina. Even normal Yharnam citizens with no combat training are still stronger than your average person as a result of the Old Blood slowly transmogrifying them, and hunters are specifically trained warriors who get enough of a boost from their dose of the Old Blood to essentially fight like superheroes. To some extent, of course, the saw form of trick weapons are just the Rule of Cool, but it's also true that regular people can't really test it because you need superhuman strength and speed to do what hunters do. Likewise, trick weapons in Bloodborne are enhanced by Blood Gems to be supernaturally hard and keen of edge, the strongest ones almost being living weapons for how much alien blood you're forging into them, and that likewise can't be accounted for in IRL testing since regular weapon smiths can't make magic weapons. As a result of this, it makes sense that the saw form underperformed. If you had superhuman strength and speed and your Saw Spear was supernaturally hard and keen then your results would have been a lot better, but obviously you can't test that because magic isn't actually real. I think this should be taken as true for fantasy weapons in general. Most unwieldy weapons in fantasy "work" because of magical explanations, and you can't test magic IRL.
The closed position is for close combat in narrow streets and Holmes. If you've ever played bloodborne you know it can be pretty claustrophobic in the Baroque style of the Cities

it looks very convincing but i feel like its more of a prototype. The locking mechanism in particular does not seem finished, the blade is still articulating quite noticably even when the machanism is supposed to be locked
Pipe with the slit but longer and flatten toward the end of the pipe, then, with the 'saw blade' sandwiched in the slit, rivet through the flat of the pipe to hold both in place...
thumbs up for the intro they rlly don’t do shit with bloodborne now lmao. hopefully since they remade demons souls (debatable how well a job was done) they’ll remaster bloodborne at some point
I will say that at least the saw cleaver (I'd have to double check) there seemed to be a lever of some kind that managed the lock mechanism. I feel like a strong spring pushing in a metal pin could help keep the blade nice and locked in place. That said I have no practical experience with this kinda stuff so I could be missing some glaring flaws with this idea.
I believe that the Hunters in Bloodborne generally want too be as close as possible to what they are hunting in order to be sprayed by the blood from their prey. In the game this serve as a healing mechanic for taking damage and I believe there is something similar in the lore as well.

Yep! You're basically saw/tearing your monster foes natural bullet and stab and slash proof armor off.

Could you also try to make... The Kirkhammer (from Bloodborne)

Don't think that would be usable
Or Ludwig's Holy Blade
For most mechanisms they really only need to be fast for the shortening version. Most weapons seem to be designed as a weapon for fighting beasts in plazas and squares that can be shortened once the beast is in a back alley for the kill.
My man! 🙏🏽 Been wanting to see you do this since I first saw you mention your love for the Soulsborne games.
The closed saw spear acts as a blade for broad surface cutting tendons and muscle, while the extended blade is perfect for shredding vitals when piercing with the barbed teeth.
what youve made looks like a mad max version of a navaja knife
Am i the only one that finds the timing of this video on point with Bloodborne Kart/Nightmare Kart coming out on the 31st.
6:02
I respect the pin system for locking in this context.
That thing looks truly terrifying 😮, excellent job.
The saw weapons are really cool in Bloodborne but i favored the Hunters axe, beat the game with that beast of a weapon.
DUDE!!! That thing looked and functioned amazingly!
Dude. That thing looks phenomenal. Could make for a great display piece.
Really liking the camera setup for your building explanation! Your shot composition is getting better and better!
interestingly, the problem of reach is why the Saw Spear and Saw Cleaver are lower tier weapons in bloodborne, because of their lack of reach in the folded position, you quite often will have to put yourself into a position where you are prone to be countered.
Lower tier? People constantly argue for those being the best weapons in the game
@@procow2274 regardless of arguments people make, both weapons are ones you can pick up either at the start of the game, or very early into it, thus, they are low tier. The Saw cleaver is fairly effective long into the game, yes, but both weapons lose effectiveness once you start getting out of the 'beast zones'.
@@dapperspider3766
Low Tier is for joke weapons like the torch or Broken Straight Sword. Fromsoft likes to make the starting and early weapons very solid based on the assumption that some players just won't pick up anything else. Look at the Claymore, the Broadsword, the Estoc, the Lothric Knight Sword, and yes, the Saw weapons in Bloodborne.
3) just about nobody uses "low tier" the way you do. if you insist on using it that way then it's really on you to accept that your deliberately confusing terminology is likely going to confuse people
*edit to expand a little.
you have this strange idea that these are "generalist weapons." they're not. they're quality weapons. while it's true that due to having split str/dex scaling they can be slotted into a str build or a dex build and still somewhat function, you're implying that they can never become more powerful than that. basically you're saying that because they're split scaling they don't reward a high stat investment... but they do, they just reward you putting points into both stats. you could argue that quality weapons require a very high stat investment since you want both, and that would be a fair reason to not use them if you're super married to having bloodtinge or arcane in your build, in fact it's why i usually don't use quality weapons much, but if you make the sacrifice to actually build around these weapons, you get a combination of very decent scaling (1.0, which is similar to an A-rank scaling in one stat), serration, good motion values on a versatile moveset, and a very very high attack speed. in short, they absolutely shred.
Alright this is awesome. I'm kinda excited to see how you build the Amigdalan Arm, Which is basically a Club/ Mallet mixed with a sharpened claw on a whip. (JK though. I know you meant "Make them all" as in the weapons in your poll.)
But, On another note. The weapon from bloodborne that I think would actually be the most practical and function are:
#1- The Hunters Axe (Because it's basicslly a Dane Axe with a extendable/ telescoping handle.)
#2- The Church pick (which in it's 1 hand form it would function sort of like a gladius and in its 2 handed form it be sort of like a war pick.)
But, My favorites are:
#1 Beasthunter Saif
#2 The Holy moonlight sword ( Because, In it's untransformed mode. It's basicslly a bastard sword.)
#3 Burial Blade. Because it's move set is just so fun and cool.
Great video, only thing I would like to point out, is I understand in the closed position it feels more normal to almost punch with it, but possibly in the next trick weapon videos try swinging it like they do in the games to see the effectiveness that way as well
You had me at Bring BB to PC. LIked and subbed.

You made the saw spear .that looks amazing. Great job
its all about the use in tight spots, i think that IS the point of the short range one.
Honestly, the most impressive aspect about Tyranth's channel just might be the prop-making. Because my *word*, that build looks GOOD.
Every time he says "rip & tare"I get Doom music in my head
Rip and Tear Until it is done.
if you hold it at the ends of the handle instead of the middle you might have some more reach, though it seems super dangerous for your fingers to be even closer to the blades.
Amazing!! Well done
Sword Spear... a Swear.
Maybe that's why harsh language is so dangerous.
so I have a couple thoughts.
Had to click, I love the Bloodborne weapons.
As we all should haha
YESSSS been waiting for this!
It somewhat reminds me of a Klingon Bat'leth when closed. That could be a cool weapon for you to make and test out :)
Thanks for sharing - Martin
I'm just glad to see a real-life version of some of the coolest ideas (if not the most practical) to come out of gaming in a long time
I watch you on Shadiversity, I like your approach the most.
9:56 LMAO, I see what you did there!
The closed option is for enclosed closets, alleyways, and dark gothic spaces. Way better than just having your fists. You're also saw/tearing your monster foe's natural bullet and stab and slash proof armor off.
Funny thing is I mained this exact weapon. Saw spear is under rated
8:02 since some of the monsters had longer appendages than you it helped to close in super close to hack and slash at their torso.
"Ah I see you too are a man of culture"
there are two things for the close position
First you can heal if you (hunters) get blood in your wounds. this might be some of the reasons why you would want to get close to get blood in your wounds and heal
second there are a lot of tight spaces in Yharnam to the point where it would almost be unpractical to have a long weapon.
I love how at some point you started handling it like it was a mirrah greatsword
You deserve more subscribers.
i believe the purpose of the closed trick weapons is for "stealth" (hear me out). in the earliest days of the beast plague, the church hunters went to hunt beasts in the secrecy of the night. so, having a weapon you could hide in your coat but still fight with if you were attacked before you could fully deploy it would be EXTREMELY useful. then after the hunters went public, as the plague could no longer be kept under wraps, it was how the workshop was used to making weapons so they just never stopped.
You're...going to do ALL OF THEM!? You're a madman..but you also have my highest respect.
Wooops. Missed upload day. Shame on me. Nice episode. Dont kno the games. But now i realy want to see your next builds. Keep up the good work.
I’m screaming with joy for attention to Bloodborne(earns a sub)
10:36 rip and tear untill it is done😊

@@faerylnhiikira1053 I'm the somebody 😜 rip and tear!
HELLYEAHBROTHER
Maybe something from Monster Hunter in the future?!
I'm happy to see you have your own channel here btw! Not a fan of shads attitude on his channel, so this channel is easier to watch
Honestly, I always preferred the keep the cleaver closed. Range was much less important with the agility of the Hunter to get close so I needed to get in quick strikes to do damage and get out, although the trick axe was the first weapon I finished the game with.
I thought it was saw spear in that order
Really cool video again, and don't worry, I didn't mind the Dora thing. 🤣 Musical greetings from Belgium, Gunther (singer and lyrics writer of Gabriel Scar)

Ha you made a funny.
the saw spear you made is almost a one to one recreation (minus the size) but in my honest opinion the saw spear needs (this for both irl and in game) more rows of teeth on the outside edge, also in game logic for the close position is for beast because of their fur/skin, the open is for the eldritch gods in their world
To add on to everyone else's explanations of why the closed saw form is practical, it should be remembered that blood ministration in Bloodborne imparts superhuman strength, speed and stamina.
Tbh I play right now with Ludwig greatsword and i never feal claustrophobic, but instead i feal very comfortable with this greatsword
"I have an unhealth obsession with the look of scythes" - SCREEN TESTED
Dude, I feel for you, I really do. I understand that obsession so well. It is why the Beast Hunter Saif and the Burial Blade are my two favorite bloodborne weapons. That, and I am a Dex focus guy through and through.
Saw Spear is my go to weapon when I go through Bloodborne. This is super cool.
The practicality of the closed position? The blood sings. Shower yourself in its chorus.
Miyazaki....hire me.
The fact that you used a literal saw to make the saw spear is genius👍
it looks very convincing but i feel like its more of a prototype. The locking mechanism in particular does not seem finished, the blade is still articulating quite noticably even when the machanism is supposed to be locked
There's a version made by a professional swordsmith floating around on here, the hinge, lock and blade are all beefier
Have you seen the War Scythe we used in the UK? War of the Rose's time. Straight pole with the Scythe again horizontal.
My favourite was the threaded cane. Not sure why, but I had so much fun with it when playing. It got me through the entire game.
bloodborne's source code is most likely gone since sony closed japan studio
always good to meed a fellow saif enthusiast!
4:41 Alternatively, you could of used 2 saw blades for added rigidity
