Ok girl, here it is. I tried the shortening tortillas the other day. They were very good. A tiny bit salty, but good. I figured out why my tortillas were SO bland. It was the baking powder. I didn't think it changed the taste of the tortillas but IT DOES. I was putting way way too much. I thought it was what made them bubble up. But too much of a good thing wasn't so good. I have tried both recipes, and I wouldn't have guessed it, but I actually think I like the ones with oil better. I've always used vegetable shortening. My whole family ❤️ loves your recipe. My husband said "mm.. they're soft" lol. Ya I had that problem occasionally too. Stiffies. So I think this is it. I have found my new recipe. Thank you so much from my whole family. Rachel I've tried MANY different recipes and your recipe was the one where I was finally successful. I think my husband falls in love with me a little more everytime I make them!😄 Thank you
When I was a kid, my grandmother tried to get me to learn how to make her homemade flour tortillas. She would say, “Come learn how to make homemade tortillas so when I die, you would know how to make them.” As a kid, you never thought your grandmother would ever pass away anytime soon, back then. So, I would never really watch and learn. I would just help her make them. After she passed, I became an adult. I tried making her homemade tortillas from whatever memory I had. It would never come close to hers. I tried watching videos and whatnot, and every time I would try to make them, they never came out to how they were supposed to. A couple days ago, I attempted and it was a fail. I came across your video and I gave it another attempt before I would give up. As I was about to mix the dough I asked my grandmother, “If you’re here with me, help me to make these.” I wasn’t able to make them her way, but I was pretty damn close. I made MY flour tortillas. Thank you so much for this video because now I can teach my daughter and/or hopefully her future kids how to make homemade tortillas. It’s not only about how to make homemade tortillas but to make memories and leave something behind for when I pass. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I just made your recipe and I cannot “Thank You” enough. I have tried several recipes and my tortillas always come out with one issue or another. I’m very pleasantly surprised that your recipe is awesome! Thanks for sharing!!!!!
Hi Rachel! I have to say, I’ve been following you for a few months now and my goodness, the few recipes I I followed came out delicious! I’m asian, from Laos.. I live out here in Az and been eating Mexican food since I can remember. I love making it as well. I’ve cooked many dishes, but I’ve never once made tortillas before. But since you made this video. I will have to tempt to make them.. I will have to update you once I do. Thank you for sharing and may God continue to bless you with your special gift, of cooking! 🙏🏼😊
Those look so beautiful and soft. Not only are your recipes the best, but everytime you say a Spanish pronunciation, I repeat the word, so you're teaching me that too! Thank you for your heart warming videos.
We made some earlier this week after watching one of your videos. I found it difficult to roll out the tortillas while I was also trying to cook them. Ordered a press and it was delivered today. That should speed things up! You are so inspirational and build my confidence in cooking real Mexican food. Your explanations are always so good and it's like having my own personal teacher. I let your videos run as I'm cooking to remind me of things I may have forgotten to write down. You are a marvelous teacher and I am so thankful for your channel. Blessings to you and your Ron. ♥
Thank you so much, comments like yours keep me doing what i love...a tortilla press is used for corn tortillas and a rolling pin is used for flour tortillas...just take your time and practice and you will do great. I appreciate your comment. ❤️
@@7chellejann6 If you mean the press, I put the dough between two pieces of heavy plastic, so no treatment needed there. If you mean the cast iron griddle I cook them on, it's well seasoned and I just use it dry. I hope that answers your question.
You are the best no one explains the small things like when I roll out my tortillas they would shrink back to shape but now I know it’s because of the glucose see no one tells you the small things like that!! Thank you so much
This is so well explained and the tip about pressing them from t middle out helped me w the shape. It Never before came out so round, and delicious! Thank you, thank you!
Ms Rachel - Your channel is awesome! You COOK with love 💗 and I EAT with love ❤️! Will definitely make your flour tortillas as each of your recipes that I have prepared is always delicious! 👍
AND she makes it look so easy! I'm sure practice practice practice helps. Love that her instructions are clear and concise & how she says "anyone can do this!" Empowerment! I'll bet all (boys too)are good cook's! The way she often says "see" & "just like this" leads me to believe, she's taught a lot of new cook's how! She should start a class! (I Know that's basically what this is) but some people need a "hands-on" approach. I'm going to try this one out very soon. It Looks easier than making bread & I can do that.
I'm certainly going to try Tortillas, For one thing it's a natural exercise. Kneading with love and passion, A vital ingredient for the preparation. Thanks Rachel for sharing your tips, Enjoy your Sunday a Hi to Ron💞👌👍😁
Rachel Kama I have been a chef for 40 years and never really knew how to make tortillas. You help me understand peppers, All t, Tortilla tortillas, enchiladas, All the other things to do of made and I wanna thank you so much. Hello Ms Rachael Growing up as a military brat my best friend Irma was Mexican we were like sisters ❤ Well if we rode the bus home her house was closer than mine and her mom would make us homemade tortillas and I liked mine with butter And after school we were always hungry 😋 If I’m visiting my sister-in-law Alydea She will make them also & my son and I enjoy the refried beans with a little cheese …so tasty ! Yours took me back years ago and sparked memories of my best friend and made my mouth water too 😋 I truly enjoy all your videos Ms Rachael Your an amazing cook & awesome teacher 👍 Thank you Brenda
Ms Rachel, You make everything with such Love. I can see it each time during your tase test! Quick question…Would you by chance have a video that teaches us how to make our own “Refried Beans?” I don’t recall seeing one, so is their a link you could share with me with instructions? Canned beans just don’t have the same delicious flavor. How I would enjoy cooking along with you side by side. Are you passing through north MO anytime soon? I just know we’d become instant friends…. God Bless You & Yours Rachel, Sandy B. 🙏❤️
Hi Sandy, thank you so much for your question, I do have a couple of them, I'll post the links for you. In my video where I make a SPAM and egg breakfast I also show detail instructions for refried beans, I like adding a smoked ham hock or bacon to the pot of beans when I'm cooking them, then I like to refry them with bacon grease and I like to add some KNORR chicken tomato flavor bouillon for added taste. I bet we would be great friends, thank you. ❤ Hearty Mexican breakfast (Spam) ua-cam.com/video/9Gj8GYqN2e4/v-deo.html How to make refried beans ua-cam.com/video/7pzYN69OWMo/v-deo.html

I made these today using avocado oil and they were delicious! My Abuela and Tia used to make them with lard and patted them out by hand to form circles. Your video and recipe made the process so easy and they were delicious! Love your videos and sweet personality ❤
Rachel, I was so happy to see your notification and even taken somewhat surprised, as this is the very recipe that I use. Decades ago, while living in NM, my neighbor taught me how to make these tasty and easy tortillas. You brought back such happy thoughts of Letty. 💖

I can't wait to make these!!! I thought it was a much harder process. That's why I love your channel so much Rachel, you have showed me how to make so many dishes I only got at restaurants because I thought they would be so complicated and difficult to make. I love your channel so much!!❤️
Thank you so much for your comment, I'm so glad my channel has helped you. These tortillas are delicious and easy to make and I know you can do it my friend, just follow the stepscarefully...comments like yours keep me doing what I love, blessings. ❤
this is the exact recipe my aunt gave me 30 years ago.. I never buy store bought..i love it.. this makes me happy ..she was a fantastic cook.. everything she made just like you do.. made with love and tradition..
These look easy to make I have seen some that take more ingredients so I'm going to try this they will be better than what you get in the grocery store ! ☺️
Those look amazing, Rachel! I’ve made flour tortillas, but not for a long time. I bought a gorgeous wooden tortilla press last year, but haven’t used it yet. 😱 This video gives me inspiration & motivation to finally do so. Do you think avocado oil would work in this recipe? Thanks much & God Bless you & My Ron. Have a great day!
Thank you so much, I've only used vegetable oil or canola, so I can't say...a tortilla press works better for corn tortillas, I've never used it for flour. This is an easy recipe and I hope you give these a try. ❤
of course avocado oil would work, as would coconut or real lard. Rachel please make original version with unprocessed (not hydrogenated) lard for us purists, and have you experimented with whole wheat? thank you, so glad you are teaching us!!
DO NOT use a Tortilla Press with Flour Tortillas !!!! the gluten in flour needs to be STRETCHED ( Rolled or Pulled) I broke 2 expensive Tortilla Presses trying to squeeze the Flour Ball into a Tortilla. A Pastry Chef explained to me how gluten works years ago after my 2 disasters . Corn Tortillas are COMPLETLY fine with a Press, Corn has no gluten and that's the best way to make home made Corn Tortillas.
I just want to thank you for teaching Me so much in the last few months. Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago in late 70s . There wasn’t to many place to buy tortillas, now they are everywhere. I always watched the ladies in my family making corn tortillas but never flour. I’m going to try to make flour tortillas thanks to you! I’m not going to stop until I get them right! Gracias!
"Hot" water! That's where I've been going wrong. Also, my arthritis makes kneading difficult... can I use my Kitchen Aid w/ dough hook instead? BTW, you have made me a super star to my family of authentic Mexican cuisine. You are always with me in my kitchen and I thank you so much for your knowledge and easy can-do approach to your recipes.
If you have a stand mixer, you can mix your masa with the dough hook….my husband uses the mixer, I like doing it the old way….but as I’ve gotten older, my hand do hurt after kneading and rolling them out.
The reason hot water was used was because the Flour Tortilla was made with left over Grease (Lard) the hot water melted the fat into more of a liquid, but it also helps the Baking Powder activate. I would try the Mixer !, I have one and I think I don't let it knead enough, I watch the mixer go round an round, but it doesn't actually "Push and Stretch" I've tried turning up the speed so it whips the dough and slaps it against the sides of the bowl, but you have to watch out because the Mixer shakes all over the counter, so put your hand on top of the mixer and let it go crazy for a minute or two. My Mom has arthritis too she's fine with kneading closed fisted, push then fold over, push fist, then fold over you only need mildly smooth dough, anything YOU make fresh is going to be better than anything store bought and I KNOW your Family would LOVE whatever you can make...I hope I helped.
Mom always used shortening for her tortillas and I was never able to get the hang of it but I'll definitely give them a try again after watching this. By the way - love your apron! You should consider selling them ... 😉
Thank you so much for your comment, I've made alot of tortillas with shortening and with oil, and I think they're both delicious. I hope you get to try them, and I may sell aprons one day my friend. ❤
Thank you so very much! Other recipes I tried weren’t working I was so frustrated! I found your video and they came out PERFECT and I love that you don’t use lard or butter! Thank you so very much ❤️
Hi Rachel, this was great timing, was thinking about tortillas this morning. I watched your video awhile back on corn tortillas ( my personal favorite) I got a tortilla press and even the same corn flour you were using. I got it about a week and a half ago but haven't made them yet. My husband prefers flour tortillas. I noticed you rolled them out, does that mean you don't use a tortilla press for flour tortillas? I love your channel, everything always looks delicious.
Hi my friend, a tortilla press is for corn tortillas, and flour tortillas are made round with a rolling pin, I hope you try them both, just follow the steps carefully and you will be able to enjoy both. ❤
Hi Rachel but also there’s a electric tortilla press for tortillas de harina too. As well the one for tortillas de maíz. Congrats for all you do for us ( recipes ) 💕🙏

So I am waiting 20 more minutes until my dough is ready to take out the bowl I did exactly the way you gave us the recipe. You can do it my friend, thank you. ❤️
Rachel I've tried MANY different recipes and your recipe was the one where I was finally successful. I think my husband falls in love with me a little more everytime I make them!😄 Thank you
Que bueno Angelina dicen k el amor entra por la l estómago 😍🥰💕🙏
Thank you so much for your sweet comment, you can make them just follow the directions carefully. ❤
Those look so beautiful and soft. Not only are your recipes the best, but everytime you say a Spanish pronunciation, I repeat the word, so you're teaching me that too! Thank you for your heart warming videos.
Well great!! So glad you're learning some Spanish words, thank you so much for your comment my friend. ❤️
You are reading my family's mind by posting this. Nothing like fresh homemade tortillas 😋💖 Thank you for sharing the love! 🥰
You're welcome, I hope you try these my friend. ❤
You made me hungry 🤤
Thank you...
The way the things are going it's time to learn.
It's great that you are willing to share your method of making tortillas
Thank you so much, blessings.
@@user-uq2sq5wg9b Sure! I ordered mine on Amazon - ARC Tortilla Press 10 inch, Roti Maker, Cast Iron Tortilla Maker
I see, I forgot about this one, hope it works for you my friend.❤️
Do you treat your comal before your first use?
@@7chellejann6 If you mean the press, I put the dough between two pieces of heavy plastic, so no treatment needed there. If you mean the cast iron griddle I cook them on, it's well seasoned and I just use it dry. I hope that answers your question.
You are the best no one explains the small things like when I roll out my tortillas they would shrink back to shape but now I know it’s because of the glucose see no one tells you the small things like that!! Thank you so much
Nothing like homemade fresh tortillas 😋
Truth my friend. ❤
Thank you so much my friend, I appreciate your comment. Enjoy ❤
Thank you. Excited to try with white spelt flour (my husband is intolerant to wheat gluten).
I'm certainly going to try Tortillas,
For one thing it's a natural exercise.
Kneading with love and passion,
A vital ingredient for the preparation.
Thanks Rachel for sharing your tips,
Enjoy your Sunday a Hi to Ron💞👌👍😁
Hi from both of us, enjoy my friend, blessings to you, enjoy this beautiful day.❤
Rachel Kama I have been a chef for 40 years and never really knew how to make tortillas. I'm very good at Mexican food but you have really help me understand so many things about the Mexican culture and the Cuisine and how are the associates to the culture. You help me understand peppers, All t, Tortilla tortillas, enchiladas, All the other things to do of made and I wanna thank you so much. This recipe for tortillas I'm getting ready to make right now I wanna tell you I cannot wait thank you so much
I always thought I would have to buy a "tortilla maker" apparatus to do this! Thanks for setting me straight Rachel.... you're an awesome Godsend to home cooks like me🥰
❤👍
Hello Ms Rachael
Growing up as a military brat my best friend Irma was Mexican we were like sisters ❤
Well if we rode the bus home her house was closer than mine and her mom would make us homemade tortillas and I liked mine with butter
And after school we were always hungry 😋
If I’m visiting my sister-in-law Alydea
She will make them also & my son and
I enjoy the refried beans with a little cheese …so tasty !
Yours took me back years ago and sparked memories of my best friend and made my mouth water too 😋
I truly enjoy all your videos Ms Rachael
Your an amazing cook & awesome teacher 👍
Thank you
Brenda
Aw Brenda, thank you so much for sharing, I appreciate your comment my friend. 🥰❤️
This is the first time anyone has explained the gluten process for me to understand. Now my tortillas won't shrink up. Thank you ❤️
Flour tortilla, frijoles, queso y una taza de cafe, desayuno tipico y bien sabroso. Thank you.
I’m going to make these this afternoon with my grandson! I love everything you make. 😘🥰
I have fond memories of making these with my Son years ago...
Thank you so much, you can do it, I hope you both enjoy them. ❤👍
Praise the Lord glory to God you're awesome
Ms Rachel,
You make everything with such Love.
God Bless You & Yours Rachel,
Sandy B.

Bacon grease is good in everything. I fry my potatoes in it and my son & husband request them often!
Thanks again for answering me back. It’s greatly appreciated!
Bless You & Yours and have a Wonderful weekend!

I made these today using avocado oil and they were delicious! My Abuela and Tia used to make them with lard and patted them out by hand to form circles. Your video and recipe made the process so easy and they were delicious! Love your videos and sweet personality ❤
Thanks so much for posting this, Rachel. I've been wanting to make my own tortillas, and you make it look so east! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, they are easy and you can do it. Thank you so much for your comment my friend. ❤️
I just love your recipes. Thanks so much. And your beautiful soul makes me smile as I learn how to cook new things at the age of 64😊❤ Thank you 💕
You make it look so easy and yummy!! 😋
It is easy my friend, and thryvare delicious...I hope you give this recipe a try. Thank you so much for your comment. ❤️
😋 yummy
Rachel, I was so happy to see your notification and even taken somewhat surprised, as this is the very recipe that I use. Decades ago, while living in NM, my neighbor taught me how to make these tasty and easy tortillas. You brought back such happy thoughts of Letty. 💖
Thank you so much for sharing Letty, blessings my friend. ❤️
Rachel I love the way you cook my grandmother Eva would always make these but she used butter and it was so good Rachel .your are also good I've just made some I hope mine come out good ,thank you for your recipe.
It is so relaxing to see you cook! Thank you for your videos. My son and i are going to make the apple fritters recipe you put out the other day! 👍
Yummy!! Enjoy every bite my friend, thank you so much for your comment. ❤️
Thank You for sharing Mrs. Rachel.
These look easy to make I have seen some that take more ingredients so I'm going to try this they will be better than what you get in the grocery store ! ☺️
Thank you so much, they are easy and delicious. Enjoy my friend. ❤️
Yummy 😋 thank you so much for sharing. Everything you make is absolutely delicious 😋👏👍🙌🤝
Omgosh those look soooo awesome. We love love love tortillas in this household. You’re such a great cook. Blessings to you always🙏🏼
Thank you so much for your comment my friend, I appreciate it so much. ❤
I’m going to attempt to make these tortillas. You make look so easy. Thank you for sharing.
@@The_Timinator Thank you. 🙂
@@barneybearandlove6665 Thanks very much. 🙂
Gracias!
You can do it my friend.❤️👍🏼
"Hot" water! That's where I've been going wrong. Also, my arthritis makes kneading difficult... can I use my Kitchen Aid w/ dough hook instead?
BTW, you have made me a super star to my family of authentic Mexican cuisine. You are always with me in my kitchen and I thank you so much for your knowledge and easy can-do approach to your recipes.
Give it a try my friend, I know some people make them like that without a problem, enjoy! Thank you for your comment. ❤️
I remember my dad making homemade flower tortillas I would eat them with a fideo sopita 😋😋😋
Yummy!!! ❤
@@rachelcookswithlove ok, I got it. Thanks for that, I was going to do both with that. Silly me 😜🌯
Hi Rachel but also there’s a electric tortilla press for tortillas de harina too. As well the one for tortillas de maíz. Congrats for all you do for us ( recipes ) 💕🙏
I love the way you explain technique! ❤

Thank you so much my friend Navdeep, I hope you give these a try, blessings to you in beautiful India. ❤️
I love making tortillas. I have such great memories of my grandpa making g tortillas and chile rellanos.
Thanks for the four tortillas recipe I don’t use oil instead I use shortening and I don’t dust them with flour either best wishes from Edcouch Texas Familia Aguila ❤️
How much shortening do you use please?
@@sharonfarias1010 Rachel has an older video using shortening, I think it was 3 cups of flour to 3 tablespoons of shortening.
@@luciagonzalez4899 Thank you.

Hola, I just subscribed today and I whipped up my flour and all the ingredients the only thing I don’t have is the roller it’s in my box at my sons house I just moved from San Diego to Arizona lol so I am using a bottle that I have nothing in it that I usually put olive oil in, I believe that will work! So I am waiting 20 more minutes until my dough is ready to take out the bowl I did exactly the way you gave us the recipe. The only thing I didn’t have my teaspoon measurements with me but I did have my bigger ones and I pretty much I bought it and I believe I did pretty darn good. My name is Carmen and I will be waiting for my tortillas to rise up just like yours. Thank you thank you so much you explain everything down to a T making it really easy for us to go step-by-step. I want to make corn tortillas the yellow ones that will be this weekend and I do have the tortilla smasher thing lol. Because next week for my daughter-in-law‘s baby shower I’m going to make homemade Caldo de Rez. I’ve made it before and I will put a couple of different things in there my family just loved it it’s gonna be cold and I love to cook especially for my family and my grandkids! I haven’t looked at your other recipes I make a delicious soda de fideo just like my mom are used to make, using strained fresh bacon grease to stir in the rice fresh onions and garlic everyone has loved my soup! Sometimes I might do it in a blender or I just do it exactly the way my mom taught us all RIP MADRE 99 yrs old 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼😉😉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️God bless you Carmen from San Diego now Arizona lol keep bringing us your recipes especially the soups.
