Just like my mamita's😢 and she would make gorditas! Made of corn like the tortillas she would make with ?plancha? It was round with a hinged, open cover, with a handle that she would press down to flatten making corn tortillas! I also remember a round plastic from a bag that was with a dozen of store-bought corn tortillas. She used it to cover the dough, while she pressed down to make the tortilla. So, it wouldn't stick to the metal, peeling it off each time. She wouldn't make all this alone! She would have all my 7 aunts helping her! She would also make, 'bunwelos'? During the holidays. Those were really good!! Deep fried fresh flour tortilla dough, sprinkle sugar & cinnamon. She made everything good! She was born in Durango (pascuales) Her name was Manuela Melero, born on Christmas day!!! When I watch you, you remind me of those golden memories of my childhood. I am 64 now. So, thank you!! Happy cooking!! 😊
I've made corn tortillas often, but they have never been pliable which has been frustrating. I followed the recipe and technique and paid close attention to look and feel per the video. I am over the moon - they are wonderfully bendy!!!! I have been a bread baker for over 40 years and sourdough the last 5 and I KNOW that mixing and resting is important, but I never thought to pay attention like that with tortillas. Now that I've made them successfully, I think my mistakes were: dough to dry, dough not mixed well enough, too much flipping on a comal that was not hot enough. Using your timing and temp, mine puffed just like yours. So happy - thank you Rachel!!
You made my day with this beautiful comment, I love happy and successful comments my friend. Thank you so much for your words especially a great Baker like you. Blessings. ❤👍⚘
@@rachelcookswithlove Hi! I am new to your channel & am loving your videos as a fellow Latina! 😌 I just started attempting to make corn tortillas a few years ago. I grew up with my Mom making them, but don’t remember her technique , just that they were great! I lost her about 10 yrs ago, so I didn’t have her input when I attempted them. ☹️ After watching your wonderful and explicit video I saw all the things I’ve been doing wrong. I can wait to try your methods soon! I’ll let you know how they turn out!😉 Thanks again!
Can’t wait til mine come out perfect like urs n want me to puff up like urs. I can’t get that texture yet not giving up My husband made me a homemade tortilla press wooden one love it. Just need to get the hang of it n fast I’m frustrated 😂

I'm so glad I found your channel. You are so much better at teaching than most other hosts. Sometimes, I think the others are all about promoting their personalities, instead of teaching.., sort of patting themselves on the back... I like your way, and your unassuming personality. It's a pleasure listening to you. You explain things that I need to know, where as the others act as if I already know everything... and I don't!
I am so glad to have found this video. I grew up with a wonderful Hispanic cook that cooked for our family. One of my favorite treats was when Carmen made corn tortillas & sliced them open with butter & salt. Sometimes she would dice up a leftover pork chop with some green salsa. I couldn't wait to get home from school to see what Carmen had waiting for me. She was the best cook & I am so glad to have had her in my life.
Oh Rachel! My husband surprised me with a gift of a tortilla press for our anniversary yesterday and I was so anxious to use it that I had to try it out last night. I used Masteca in the gold package like you prefer & followed your directions to the letter. I have never even attempted to make any kind of tortillas in my life & these turned out PERFECT! They were all the same size and soft and pliable and so tasty that we ate about 10 between the two of us! I can’t thank you enough for being such a wonderful teacher and such an inspiration to me to have the desire to make new food! I’m having such a great time learning & experimenting! You’re a beautiful soul. God bless you 🙏🏻♥️. Debi
Thank you for teaching and showing us how to bring the dough together just right. You are a good wife, a good woman and you have a good heart. Put that little saying of yours on an apron or your next cookbook and do not forget to patten it or in some way make it legally yours. Just a thought. Jeremiah 31:3
Our daughter became highly allergic to corn in her 20’s. She loves Hispanic foods but has missed out. I used your corn tortilla recipe using almond meal/flour and they are perfect! They aren’t yellow but the texture is spot on! Love your channel!
Wow Rachel You're amazing! I'm 74 years old and have never been able to cook Corn tortillas. You my friend have encouraged me to try again. You are a wonderful teacher! Gracias.💞👍
I just made these today along with your flour tortillas. I have tried making these for years and though they have tasted good they have never been this soft. It's the first time I have ever been able to get them to puff up. It's all in your technic. Thank you for taking the time to teach us. I'm glad I found you. ☺
My mom has that same griddle pan. We use it to toast bread. Tortillas are not our basic every day meal, because it's not part of our food culture, but I do like them with tacos Al pastor, and although we are not Mexicans, I do whip up some Mexicans dishes, e.g. enchiladas, I also have that same bag of corn flour, my neighbor gave me. I thanked her for it, but I thought 🤔 What am I going to do with this? Now I know. Thank you, Rachael 😊
Hi Rachel. I came across your channel about 3 weeks ago. I'm so happy I did as a gringa who was raised in South Texas but have been living in Florida for 31 years. I miss everything about Texas and will never get it out of my system. I am very partial to Mexican food made in Texas and can't find anything that compares to it here. I just wanted to tell you I made these Tortillas De Maiz and because of your excellent teaching skills I succeeded with the first batch of dough. I just made a bigger batch today with my comal but that's where my problem was. I thought I cleaned and re-seasoned correctly but I had to play around with the heat because some of my tortillas burned. I would love to know how you take care of your comal. Thanks again for this tutorial. I feel like I'm home again watching and learning from you. I can't wait to try your other recipes. Take care and God Bless you and your family.
I like partial burned tortillas it gives food a different awesome taste. Just scrape the burned and keep using it, after a while you’ll get the hang of the temperature but I always put it on high since I don’t want to wait. The flipping is the key not the temperature
I absolutely love ❤️ your show and your passion for cooking.I was raised by my grandma and she showed me the passion I have for cooking and baking.lots of admiration and respect.not very many people know how to cook like our grand mothers did so little by little our culture is fading away.but seeing you trying to show your recipes and love for our food is amazing.thank you for an amazing show 💕
Thank you so much for your comment, it's comments like yours that make it all worthwhile, my mom has always been one of the best cooks I know, and she made cooking fun and I think that's where my love for cooking has come from, I agree that our culture seems to be fading, but as long as I can cook I will try and keep it alive. Thank you so much for your sweet comment my friend. ❤
Rachel, I can’t wait to try this recipe! My mama taught me how to make puffy tacos with masa way back when I was just a young girl, the best puffy tacos ever. She was raised in south San Antonio in the 1940s-50s & Mexican food was her absolute favorite both to eat & make. Your video brought back so many childhood memories. She always let me press the dough for her… I inherited her tortilla press when she passed away in 2012, & I’ve tried making corn tortillas in the last few years, as I have to eat gluten free now, but they never turned out. Thank you for the in-depth explanation - now I realize I need more water & to let it rest. I can’t wait to try these with my carne guisada recipe, & with her cheese enchiladas. She collected recipes from her friends & neighbors from all around the state (I’m a native Texan, too!) & taught us kids how to make them, too. Such a blessing! How long do these keep for? And what’s the best way to store them? I’m sure fresh is best but I’m disabled & have to cook when my body is cooperating & reheat the leftovers throughout the week. PS I can’t wait to try your pork chop recipe, the one you linked to in your carne guisada video. I think my hubby will love it, too!
Oh my, you're the best teacher! And you REALLY do put your heart in what you're cooking, Rachel ♥️ Thank you so much! I think I can cook some delicious Mexican food after watching and learning from you 🤗💕
Thank you Rachel 😊 I just love the way you explain everything ❤️ . You and your Ron have so much patience. I can taste all the food 😋 Best wishes Always to You Both!!
If you follow this recipe exactly you will not be disappointed. This is the best and easiest recipe for corn tortillas! Thank you so very much for sharing! I don’t think I can ever go back to store bought again!
I swear I could smell them as I watched you cooking them. They look delicious! I ordered a tortilla press today so I can make my own. I am gluten free so these are perfect for me. I love watching your videos. You explain everything so well. ❤
How did this corn tortilla recipe work out for you as I am also GF? Have you tried making flour tortillas or sopapillas yet? I'm new to GF diet as I was recently diagnosed with celiac so I'm still trying to figure out how to make them. I'd appreciate any help/advice you can give me. Thank you. Maria L.
@@toandiloya585 They're corn tortillas and corn is naturally gluten-free. If you google both "gluten-free flour tortillas" and "gluten-free sopapillas" you will see there are some recipes floating around online. Best of luck navigating your new dietary lifestyle.
Thank you Rachel I am so glad you are honest that they didn't turn out good when you were learning and the mistakes you figured out. That helped me a lot and the real key was the timing. Also to use a seasoned pan like a iron skillet My still skillet just kept burning around the edges
This week I finally bought a tortilla press, comal, and mocajete. I can't wait to watch this again and do it myself! Thank you so much. You make it look so easy because you are that good!
I am so glad I found you. My grandmother gave me the love for Mexican food and I have learned so much from you. I look forward to making many of your recipes.
Thank's so very much for all your videos. I started it make my tortillas, CORN , FLOUR, Rachel I live alone So I only make a few for myself. Rachel, and as a senior citizen Rachel I'm saving money 😊. There fresh and nothing goes to waste Thank's to you. Columbia SC 🎉😂❤😊
Dear Rachel, You said to leave a comment or request. So here goes... Please would you come to Oregon and teach me to cook??? LoL Actually, I'd probably fall over dead if that ever happened. My dream is to learn to make Tortillas, Chimichangas, and Tamales... Not spicy hot! Only spicy smoky. Anyway...I live in Oregon. I live in an area that is FILLED with the wonders of Mexican cooking...and I am sadly, nearly clueless in this area. LoL. I've made Tamales exactly one time in the 20 years I've lived here. That was for a fund raiser and was under the strict guidance of a woman from Mexico. It. Was. Wonderful. I've wanted to learn how to do it on a much smaller scale ever since. Thank you for your channel. I discovered it yesterday. I've seen about twenty of them so far and I love them all. ❤️ Consider me one of your newest best fans. Brenda~ (bree)
As I was watching this video and paying attention to your hand movements, the way you speak, the way you put your heart into your cooking, I realized you remind me so much of my mother-in-law. She owned a restaurant for a while and then she worked as school lunch room manager for several years. And now her daughter, my wife, has worked in the food business most of her life.
Your video covers all the questions I had after tossing out 2 batches of my first time corn tortilla attempts hahaha! I decided to try making tortilla cause I had the best first time experience eating tacos by chance just because I happened to be in an area in California with good Mexican restaurants. As a baker and cook I thought I can do this hahaha! little did I know as you said, its one of those very easy yet very complicated situation learning how certain flours work. Cause of you I will try again :-) Thank you sweet Rachel, you are adorable !
Rachel, I have just recently found your channel, and so happy I did. I wanted to thank you SO much for the detailed intructions for your corn tortillas! I made my first batch, and remembered how you said it should be like Playdough. I got the consistency just right, and made the most amazing corn tortillas I have ever had! Thank you so much! I am going thru your videos, and learning your recipes, and writing things down. Again, thank you so much!
Rachel- you are so right- the gold bag makes delicious soft tortillas. We love the flavor. EVERY SINGLE one puffed. I GOT POOF! Ive never been able to get poof. With every gentle press in the center I would just smile with such happiness when the tortilla puffed. I’m sharing this with my sister. I just know she will have success in her kitchen too. Thank you!
My husband gave me a tortilla press for Christmas. My 1st attempt was a big fail! They stuck to plastic so bad ....Gave them all to the chickens! I will try again after watching this and seeing your tips and encouragement. Thanks Rachel.
Thank you! I've watched a lot of videos on tortilla making but yours helped me understand the perfect hydration and texture for the dough. Yesterday I made a big batch based on a different video that told you how much water to add. I had about 150gm of masa left over before I open a new bag so after watching your video I used that to make three 😁. Puff was perfect. My puff yesterday was hit and miss. My dough wasn't hydrated enough. This wasn't even my first time but you helped me understand the perfect hydration AND a lot of videos say your pan should be medium low and they look like they're using a non-stick pan. I fired my cast iron up today. 👍 BIG THANK YOU. I made three just now. Perfect!
Just great. I learned so much. I have never cut my hefty bag in half. I always just left it together split the sides and kind of folded it. Having the plastic in 2 pieces is such a great idea. Seems to help peel the plastic off without tearing up the tortilla. Love your videos!
Rachel I have just made your corn tortillas and they blew up amazing and so soft! My husband Mark is a coeliac (totally gluten free) and he says it’s a game changer! 😊. 💜💜💜
My husband is from Central America and I’m from South America so I taught myself how to make corn tortillas for him to eat at home and like you i tru out a lot of totilla dough I figured the warm water trick but not letting the dough rest and because of that they would always break, stick on my wooden corn presser no matter how much I try. Thank you for your well detail videos. Muchas gracias de una latina a otra.
Thank you Rachel now I can try my luck. I missed out on learning all my grandma's recipes as she passed away too early plus I was an Army brat and we moved around so much so I missed out on learning how to prepare many things. Tortillas was one thing she made day and I remember how fascinated I was watching and sneaking a bit of raw dough to eat. You bring back many memories, so glad you are sharing these foods.
Ordered a new press, bought the corn flour and made my first batch of corn tortillas a few minutes ago. a delicious success! Hubby and I both love them..your recipe made them so easy to make! :)
Hi Rachel! I just wanted you to know that I enjoy your videos. You are so patient & gentle. I love that you take the time to explain how it's done. Thank you & Stay Blessed!
Came back to this video to let you know I have made these tortillas two days in a row!!!! They came out real good. Best recipe ever. I am so pleased and very happy. Thank you so much.
I bought a tortilla press last year & haven't used it because I was afraid of failure & flop I'd make of it. Thanks so much for taking time to make these valuable teaching videos 🙏
Hi, Rachel! Thank you so much for sharing your video - it helped me tremendously! I am in Ghana and do not have access to Maseca, normally. But a friend brought some to me from the States, where I'm from, and your tips made it so much easier for me, especially since I have to make my Maseca last and cannot afford to waste any, due to it not being readily available here. Timing really is key, and it made all the difference! Thank you again - I really appreciate you and love your videos. By the way, I made your beef enchilada casserole and my family and I loved it!
Thank you for sharing your recipes. So many of us had mother’s who worked to much to have time to show us. You’re a great teacher and very explanatory. Love your channel!
Rachel, I love making these! I was always afraid to try and since watching you last week I’ve made a batch every day! We can’t get enough of them. I love when they pop up I feel like yippie I did them right. They are so easy and so delicious!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! You are a great teacher. I have been making my own corn tortillas for a few years now, the package tortillas have a weird taste. I also cook mine on a cast iron skillet. I know the skillet is hot enough when I sprinkle a few drops of water and the water "jumps" and quickly evaporates. I also knead the "taistal" once again individually before placing it on the plastic. The only thing different is I use a thinner plastic for the tortilla press. Completely agree, after making them a few times, you can make them in your sleep. My mom can flip the tortillas without using the spatula, I can flip it using my hand only the second time, not the first time. She started making tortillas when she was 9 years old, she even cooked the nixtamal and ground the maize herself in the farm, so I am proud to say that even though I have never cooked nixtamal, I can at least make them from masca!
Rachel thanks for all those great tips. I remember my grandmother making them by hand and they were absolutely delicious. Love the way you explain every detail!❤
Thank you so much, they are very easy to make after some practice, I hope you try them, thank you for sharing my friend, and I appreciate your comment and support of my channel. ❤
Its so nice to listen to you. My moms mother had the same soft voice and Mexican accent. Grandpa was from Spain different accent but wonderful too, I miss them, and especially watching her make tortillas. Man she could roll flip and cook 5 dozen in no time.. Thanks for sharing Rachel.
Rachel, my mom used to use a plastic bag that she cut to size when pressing corn tortillas in the tortillera! I loved all your tips, and my mouth was watering when you prepared the delicious looking taco at the end!
My first taste of corn tortillas was over a year ago when I bought some from the grocery store to do chicken fajitas. The packaging made them look authentic, but they were nothing of the sort; they were rubbery and had some offputting, bitter, chemical taste. Needless to say, I threw the whole bag into the garbage. Recently, I began trying to make them at home; they tasted great, but they didn't puff up and were dry and tough, as well as broke when folded. I watched your video months ago, and I watched it again yesterday. Well, I must say that I just got through making a batch tonight, and these are the best ever! I paid attention to the measurements and "playdough" texture/consistency, and I let them rest in a bowl covered with plastic wrap for about two hours. I followed also your cooking time and temperature recommendations. I don't have a press, yet; I forgot to look for one in the grocery store when I shopped yesterday. I used a heavy cast-iron pan to do the pressing. I measured with a scale 8 balls (45 grams each), and the size was perfect. Now, I know how to get real corn tortillas at home. Thanks so much for your kindness, showing us how to make our own. Happy New Year!
This is the easiest thing to make. With ur second ,third try , you’ll get it. Not too wet ,not too dry. Just knead till it doesn’t stick to ur hands. N its delicious fresh. My husband n i love it w sardines. Actually its good w anything u eat w bread or rice. Rachel , i love watching u. Especially ur taste test.
Rachel thank you so much. It's been too many years 😪to count. I finally know how to make corn tortillas. You're a 👍 great teacher . Thank 😊you for sharing 😀❤!!!!!
Hi Rachel I’m new I just ran into your videos and I’m already loving them . I love the way you explain everything. Thank you so much for sharing your cooking talent with us God bless you
Thank you Rachel. I have been yearning to make my own tortillas since forever! But had no clue. I've never been a good cook and many try's have been disasters, so I've all but given up. Will let you know how mine turn out following your instructions. You make it very easy to follow.
You are the best teacher!!! I love watching and learning from you. I made the best BD dinner for my daughter and the whole family using your recipes and they LOVED it ❤️
Remember my grandmother making them by hand, I was about 5. Never have be able to make them that way. Will buy a press and try again. Thank you for teaching this over 70 year old women a few tricks. When my granddaughters ask me how I make something, I refer them to your videos, because this old brain of mine forget somethings.
❤ My first time making tortillas and before this video it was a disaster 😬the masa was more like wet cement. I wanted to give up. But I just kept adding more maseca until it soaked up the extra water & it felt more like playdoh. That was the best advice! Not easy but it worked out. Took me hours to make them. Something in me lit up when they kind of puffed up cooking 🤩. So even though my picky family didn’t try them I’m learning to trust myself and the process. They were good. 😎 thank you for your help!!
Rachel you are a very patient and wonderful teacher of the culinary arts. You make it so easy to follow your recipes. I really prefer your cooking style verses other other cooking channels. Thank you for your cooking videos. My best to “your Ron”. Que Dios los bendiga.
Rachel you make it look so easy & delicious 😋 I gotta dig out my equipment and play & practice! Thank you dear lady for taking the time to show n tell us how! God Bless.
Oh my gosh, I just love watching you and hearing your beautiful accent! I love all the tips on how to keep from messing up. You are so motherly and patient I feel like I'm visiting with a relative. Your food looks so delicious, too bad we don't have taste television.
I love how you give each tortilla a little tap after you turn it. Almost ritualistic. Lol. You do cook with love. Just subscribed. I live just down the road where Maseca is processed and I’ve never made corn tortillas. I will now thanks to you.
Thx again Rachel, one thing I learned fr your show, cooking is a process, not mixing all ingredients at once, each ingredient has to incorporate with the other to 'release' their own flavor. You are a great teacher...maybe in the near future a cookbook would b awesome. My biracial g/daughter loves TexMex food. 💕
Dear Rachel, I'm Annette. I watch u from California. Thank u for your delicious recipes. You are really great! You could have your own cooking show on TV! I LOVE YOU, RACHEL! I am into me second week at trying to master my disaster in this process of corn tortilla making. Every day, a new mix of results but never quite getting to a consistent stack of durable, foldable tortillas that carry the load of my cooked beans. You answered, anticipated and countered every problem way better than my own discoveries and with the minimum fuss, frankly, my favorite tortilla making videos that I have seen these past two weeks. I will be back to report on my results.
I know this is on old video but I always wanted somebody to teach me how to make tortillas just like your video. My mother said it so easy just get your hand on it NOt TO ME I had to see it to lean. Thank you
Thank you for sharing how to make corn tortillas. I now have done them twice. These last ones were better then the first. Practice makes them better. I appreciate you. I like watching your videos. 😊
Very encouraging!!! My first try didn’t go so well, but after your step by step video, I’ll be back in my kitchen to try again until I get them right. Thank you

Youd make a good high school teacher for kids who like to cook..
You are the best cook ever!!! I live in NC, But born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. Que Dios te bendiga, tu Amiga para siempre!!!
Kneading individual balls of dough is brilliant ! I have Arthritis in my hands can’t knead for long so that will work 👍🏼
Perfect recipe for corn tortilla's, simple, fast. Won't buy store tortillas anymore. Thanks for sharing.
This week I finally bought a tortilla press, comal, and mocajete. I can't wait to watch this again and do it myself! Thank you so much. You make it look so easy because you are that good!
Thank you Rachel for teaching me the tricks to making the best corn tortillas ever.
I am so glad I found you. My grandmother gave me the love for Mexican food and I have learned so much from you. I look forward to making many of your recipes.

Dear Rachel,
You said to leave a comment or request.

Best demonstration of corn tortillas on UA-cam. The "real time" demo makes it look doable. Thanks for sharing
My husband and I enjoy all your videos. Thank you for taking the time to teach us all these delicious recipes.God bless you and Ron.➕❤️
Rachel I concur you should open the school to teach these young kids about the old generation God bless you
Aww, thank you so much for your words, I appreciate your comment and support of my channel my friend. Blessings. ❤
Hi Rachel , I can see the Lord has blessed you with the gift of teaching! Thank you for all of your tips!!
❤🥰👍
I watch all of your videos. You are the best teacher. I love your style and your recipes are fantastic. Thank you Rachel!
I successfully made them for the first time at home. They came out perfect and delicious. Soft and all ! Thank you Rachel !!
Rachel, you are the best. Keep on teaching
.
Rachel......You make me smile.....You REALLY do cook with LOVE. Thank you!
Lucky Ron! Wonderful wife who really knows her way around the kitchen!! Thanks Rachel, everything you make looks like perfection!
I so love your smile and when I need a recipe I come here!
Thank you Rachel you are spot on with your instructions! I appreciate that! Step by step instructions! Super hero cook! 💜✌️👍🔥🔥👏👏🆒
Rachel thank you so much. It's been too many years 😪to count. I finally know how to make corn tortillas. You're a 👍 great teacher . Thank 😊you for sharing 😀❤!!!!!
Thank you! Your specific directions, where needed, are so helpful. I felt like I had my mom showing me how to make tortillas.❤️
Wonderful for people who have food allergies! My son has no gluten, wheat, barley, oats and rye food. He'll love this!
You are the best teacher!!! I love watching and learning from you. I made the best BD dinner for my daughter and the whole family using your recipes and they LOVED it ❤️
Yes she is!! She's a wonderful teacher
It’s the Rachel puff! I found myself doing the happy dance too!
Rachel gracias por su receta de tortillas de masa....pues cuando la vi dar el bocado , seme asia agua la boca
Love your show Rachael. Your soothing voice, not rushed, makes it easy to follow and learn! Thanks.
I enjoy your videos so much and have tried some of your recipes I've seen so far . The ones I've tried turned out well. I love your kitchen! I love your voice, and the way u explain things. Thank you 😊❤️
I've been watching you for a couple of months. You are so much like family! I'm even remembering some of my Spanish. I love your show and I love your personality. Thank you for the time you spend in explaining things.
I will be back to report on my results.
it worked the first time. I’ve tried and failed with so many other recipes. Thank YOU!!!
I just tried. Needs a little work. But they taste amazing. The dough was right consistency. ❤️❤️❤️ thank you!!
Finally, by following your video, I made corn tortillas that came out perfectly! Delicious! Thank you, Rachel!
The most educational video on corn tortilla making. On my schedule for today. Many thanks.
I'm making this tortilla for the first time and I'm excited 😊 you are an excellent teacher ❤️❤️❤️ thank you so much for sharing!
You're welcome my friend, thank you so much for your comment. ❤️
Very encouraging!!! My first try didn’t go so well, but after your step by step video, I’ll be back in my kitchen to try again until I get them right. Thank you
Continue and itll pay off.❤⚘
