  • Part 2 of removing the wings from our new DC-6 airliner that we are turning into a #airplane house. It's the ultimate #tinyhouse project here at our new property in Big Lake, Alaska. This 1956 airplane is being given a new life as a home for our pilot students learning to fly here at the FLY8MA Pilot Lodge.

    that's an epic project! love it. have you seen the 747 wing house? the wing is used for the roof, and looks cool. you could potentially repurpose the wings for a patio roof or something along those lines. reattaching will be challenging. inside renovation will be like working inside a airstream. cant wait to see it. thanks for the updates. and glad you didnt get hurt with the close call on the wing

    This is awesome Mike and crew! Please continue to post about the progress. In two years (or sooner) when I resume my IFR studies, I would like to take advantage of staying here. Very cool to see how "pilot" skills have so much practicality in the real world. (Here in Louisiana it is in the 80s... you can send down some of that Alaskan air if ya want. ha)

    G,day from Sydney Australia.
    Great film: something you don't see everyday.
    "My nickel on the grass"
    * Replace tyres/wood blocks with subfloor frames and establish which materials: steel square section on concrete block?
    * Slope, grade and cover surface ground to drain surface water away from the fuselage.
    * Exterior lighting
    * Test internal wall installation method e.g best R value and attachment of sheets to metal ribs, with easy removal access panels for valves, inline filters and drainage.
    * Easy installation lighting: plug in 12v
    Fun stuff
    (Install X2 Microsoft flight XM simulators in the cockpit).
    Merry Christmas
    🌟

    I think you should cut out the walls up front, make one 12 or so foot back, and presto your bedroom, bed should be in the old cockpit... you'd have all those windows to look out of if you desired, or just pull the curtains if you didn't.

    I just can't say what I saw here impressed me: The Number 4 nacelle could have seriously injured the man who had been under it only seconds before the wing fell; The strap which let-go. This is not safety.

    “50-50 shot it was going to stay on the trailer” 🤦🏻‍♂️ you say you teach people how to fly airplanes get everything you do everything you touch on this channel is a complete corner cutting hack job and completely unsafe. What does that say about your flight school and maintenance?

      Well, That's why our students have a 100% pass rate on checkrides and thousands of accident free hours, because we're just a bunch of hacks making airline pilots, military pilots, corporate pilots, pilots flying for fun, flying for the coast guard, and flying for homeland security. Yup, just another terrible flight school.

      No worries Captain Darty, these guys fit right in the Alaskan crowd. Captain Theron Smith had 30k hours in flying commercial airliners, he made it to almost 15 hours in AK bush planes, RIP N455A. There are Alaskan lawyers already calculating the potential value of this 100 acer development, just look at today's (4/8/23) ADN headlines.
