    I had almost 10 hours in a 182 while getting my HP endorsement and couldn't seem to land it consistently even though in a 172 I could land no problem every time. Grabbed a cushion and it made all the difference.

      Definitely. I think I asked my CFI on my first take-off flight about this and he looked at my like I was an idiot, and said something like “just adjust where you want it”. Was hard to explain I didn’t know where I wanted it. I had an inkling that there must be an optimal position, both height and how far back the seat is.
      The person in this video just told me all I was asking about in no time.

      @@shader26Yeah he’s awesome. Check out his other videos. He even goes over the check ride oral exam and what not to get stumped on. How to become an A&P, just all kinds of things helpful to any up and coming pilot or even experienced pilots.

    I've been doing this for years. I always liked to sit high and close. That was a suggestion that I got from my grandfather.

    I wish my CFI told me these things during the first lesson. Took a while to figure these things out. Inconsistent sight picture is a huge slow-down in primary training.

    As a shorter man, finding the right seating position when my school has like 15 planes is challenging. This helps, thank you!

      Count your blessings! I've flown in multiple planes where ive hd to hunch over so I could turn my head! You can always add height, but never remove it, fly safe and have fun

    A great tip on holding a yoke is to place a pen or pencil under the ring/middle finger but on top the index and pinky. There is no way to take a death grip, even with a full handle on the yoke.

    ignoring this not-so-exciting stuff leads to a lot of excitement later on - but not the pleasant kind...😅 being a medium-short guy, some seats don't come forward enough for me (due to worn-out rails and locking pins), but I realized that life vests (not the inflatable types, but the simple ones you can use near the shortline) make great improvized seat cushions as well (light, but sturdy)

    3:20 unfortunately the 737 doesn’t have the little sight balls. It was super convenient in the E175 though.

    Fantastic Jon, Welcome back, have really missed your instructional videos !!! 200 hours, and 6'2", and still confused as to how far forward I should be sitting. Usually right up front, but I find that bites when trying to flair and my elbow bumps the seat. Great video.

    Great topic. My Piper 140 has no vertical seat adjustment and has a fairly tall panel. Although I'm no giant at 5'10", I have a long torso and short legs which turns out to be ideal for flying (and sitting in movie theaters). I carry a 2" seat cushion for passengers. Not only is a seat cushion an essential item for shorter pilots, but it makes your guests experiences infinitely better. I've taken a few vertically challenged instructors out in it and it's actually surprising how many times ego trumps out over proper flying position as they decline the seat pad opting for a Charles Lindbergh landing setup. Flying yesterday I noted what I can see in the Piper. At my eye level I easily see the entire top of my front cowling.

      This leaves me wondering if I would do better with a small cushion in my Cherokee 180. The seat feels very low and has no height adjustment.

    • @Chrisovideos
      @Chrisovideos 6 місяців тому

      Probably the exact same seats that I have.... I highly recommend it. Not only will it give you way better landing views, it will also give you a better forward view in cruise. On hot days with high density altitude, I can actually see the horizon over the front on climb out. @@shaunkruger

    It is important for everyone to know that sitting high on the seat will help a lot for better landing no shame on that the shame it’s when you have a rough landing or bouncing because you’re not C runway clearly

    Excellent video about a topic that can screw so many things up for pilots/student pilots if not addressed correctly.

  • @TheLucas2696
    @TheLucas2696 6 місяців тому

    I was sitting too far forward initially. I'm a big guy, so when I'd pull the yoke back to flare I'd kinda get a t-rex arm thing going on because my arm was pinched between my body and the door, which would cause me to inadvertently apply aileron while pulling back, so I had a hell of a time maintaining center-line. I make sure to triple check I can get full elevator deflection without cramping myself too much before I taxi now.

    great video as usual. makes me think about how this is so silly but i recently got my cfi cert (shoutout to ur mock oral videos hahaha) and for the longest time my during training my right seat landings were so shit and off centerline no matter how much i practiced w a cfi next to me. it finally took me flying solo right seat to realize I was subconsciously leaning on the door the whole time, thereby almost always putting some right rudder in. It felt super unnatural to do left rudder when needed bc of the way i was sitting.

    You might want to mention that working the rudder pedals to the stops on the ground isn't always good for the plane. You can mess things up in planes with nose wheels linked to the rudders.

    I'm 5"6". The seat always slides as far forward and as high as it will go. Seems like they'd be a little more accommodating since most of the cockpits I've sat in were built when the average man was only 2 inches taller than me.
