Used an extension cord which lead to a broken curling iron. Now, the on light lights up when plugged into a socket but the curling iron will it heat up. Is there way to fix it? Please advise. Thanks!
You make it seem so easy but since my curlers wires are all busted up I will try my best to fix it. Btw if it's a hot tools brand it's worth $50.00 lol.
my curling iron looks similar but mine don't come poff at the bottom with a screw its just on there and I can't pull it off no matter which way I twist is there another model or vergin ??
Hi Adam, I have a more expensive Hot Tools curling iron that I will try this repair on. I'm hoping it opens the same way. As for the replacement cords, I kept my eye out at the used goods stores like Salvation Army, Goodwill or Value Village and found a few curling irons to salvage the cords from. If not, it can always be fixed as shown.
I was going to throw mine out because of the crack in the cord but because of your video I've decided to hold onto it until a rainy day when I have time to fix it. I'll just make due with a straightener in the mean time. Thanks for spreading some knowledge.
Ever attempted a Beachwaver? It gets hot but the barrel doesn’t turn. Doubtful it’s a wiring problem as a small “whine” can be heard when pressing the rotate button
My hat is off to you my good sir. Actually soldering it and doing it right. Only extra thing I would have done was add an extra heat shrink larger to encase both as a little extra strain relief. But all in all wonderful fix and video.
Hi Adam, great video, except I have a pink titanium and I'm having problems taking it apart. I've removed all the screws along with the black bands at the end where it swivels. Something is holding it together at the end (where it swivels) and I can't get it apart and I don't want to force it. Do you have any suggestions.
+NDJ M Hi there.. I'm fixing my wife's as we speak, and looking for replacement cords. If it's a "hot tools" with a swivel, I had to remove and embedded black cap on the back. Once that was pulled out, you could access a screw and the whole cord ( including contacts) comes off.
Would you know how to take out the top tray out from the Babyliss pro 30 hot roller . They come with 4 sizes of rollers, red blue white and yellow, with 4 sizes of the heating element rod . I would like to remove the plastic cover so that I am able to fit in mostly blue size rods. As it only allows me to fit in 8 rollers in at one time . Cheers
I have a curling iron which i want to repurpose into a heating wand with a constant temperature. I introduced a rheostat to throttle down the power going into the wand but regardless how low the rheostat setting the iron still runs hot. How do I modify the iron to give me a constant temperature of 100 degrees. Thanks.
HI I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP I recently got this curling iron which did not have the maximum heat written anywhere, anyway it ended up reaching only to 110 and that doesn't curl my hair it's just not enough heat, so is there any way I can get the curling iron to reach a higher temperature?
Ok, dumb question from a woman that is learning how to do things for herself. How do you know which wire from the plug end goes to which wire that you cut on the inside? I am worried I would get the wires crossed and fry something badly.
I fixed my wife's curling iron the same way a few years ago. It finally failed again and this time it is the heating element that is bad. Where can I get another element?
I just fixed a power cord on my wife's curling iron today, I did cut away bad section of the cord, twist and solder copper wires back together, heat shrink, etc. But I wonder if with such high current draw if the solder could melt while using it.
Solder would not melt unless there is a short and the join reaches 188 °C which no wire will reach under normal operating conditions if the wire has been chosen properly, which it would have since this is the one that comes with the unit.
Hi Adam: Thank you so much. Mine is expensive and gold plated series Helen of Troy, now Hot tools. I need it fixed. It is heating up but only on warm. Please, please help Me. Thanks so much.
I was watching videos of how to curl your hair and somehow I ended up here. Lol at least now I know how to curl my hair and how fix my curling iron if the time ever comes. It was an interesting video.
Did you ever find a source for getting replacement power cords? They probably want to sell the complete unit and make more money, they don't want us fixing these.
poss source is any thrift shop and especially any bigger one, say Goodwill. Several used sources of used gear are Goodwill, Craigslist ,etc. replace and your good to go.
i thought i would have been able to do this myself, but i was wrong.... O.o.... After i was done, the light was showing but it was not getting hot.... What did i do wrong?? :(
Are you sure the cord was the problem? You could have a wire disconnected or broken where it attaches to the element. Or the element itself could be broken. Cords are the problem 90% of the time, but not all the time.
Thank you so much for posting this. Just fixed my own and saved myself $80, not $20. Yay! :-)
Any chance you have a video on how to fix the on and off switch
Can i send u my curling iron to fix
Please?

How do you know which wire goes to which?
i lost the small set screw that holds the housing on my interchangeable hot tools curler, do you know what size and thread the screw is?
THANK YOU. GREAT! DOES IT HAVE TO BE THE SAME MODEL TO GET THE CORD REPLACEMENT OR JUST FROM ANY OTHER CURLING IRON? NEFOR I GO TO A THRIFT STORE

So where do you purchase the replacement power cords? I have a Hot tools model 1181 and I cannot seem to find a replacement power cord

Your amazing. Wish you could fix mine. Thanks for the video.
Didn't work. Tried your method on two different brand curling irons. Did exactly what you did but neither would turn on. Maybe I reversed the wires ?

AdamDIY I actually don't know... But I do want to thank you for posting such a great video... I will try again...
You are welcome. I would think that if the light is not flickering on and off, then you have a broken connection somewhere else on the iron.
Awesome video! Thank so much for your help!!
Adam can i send you my beachwaver curling iron?
