    Good technique that I have also used. The only difference if I may... I offset where the wires connect by 3/4in so they have no way of accidentally coming in contact, even when wrapped. Thanks for the vid.

      Even more important in Europe and the UK where the voltage is twice that of the US. 240 volts.

    A great help to me. Have 8 dogs! And many chewed cords! It gets expensive to replace whole cords all the time.

      It will get more expensive if your dog keeps eating the metal and plastic 🙄

      That sounds like a problem that will eventually solve itself.

    Yeah, definitely a temporary fix for a power saw. Good for lamp cords. Not my favorite solution for a power saw given the high amperage, active use and lethal capacity in operation. Like Andy said, you don't want to do anything that affects the drag of the cord across the board - just to avoid mistakes and surprises. And this cord is going to get yanked on a few times. That's why it has a stress relieving sleeve at the saw. The stress of getting yanked on will route to the wire with shortest solder joint which weakens the cord a bit. If you have mechanical skills and basic electrical awareness you can replace the cord, which would be a good fix long term fix. If you don't have time to wait for the exact cord from the manufacturer be sure and use the same wire gauge when you build your own.
    The suprisingly tricky part of heat shrink tubing is what we see here: Planning ahead to place it everywhere you're going to need it before you start sticking parts together. (Don't ask me how I know that.) As others have mentioned, staggering the solder joints so they're not across from each other adds safety, maybe even with a lamp cord but especially with a saw, since solder leaves hard edges.
    Good luck making, have fun, explore .... stay safe.

    I put a new cord on then I could make it longer and more useful as well and to be honest it wouldn't take much longer than what you just did on most tools I'd also use a better quality cable

    Newbie here: what type of wire cutters are you using at the beginning to remove the plastic coating and expose the wire?

    • @TheoneandonlyRsclan
      @TheoneandonlyRsclan 7 місяців тому

      If you score the edges with a box knife or even a sharp kitchen knife, you can use your teeth or even fingers to pull the wire sleeve cleanly off exposing the wire

    Instead of the heat shrinks on the individual wires, can you just use regular electrical tape? Is 1 method better than the other?

    • @steventhehistorian
      @steventhehistorian 7 років тому +2

      You can use electrical tape in a pinch, but shrink tubing will last longer and be less prone to fail.

    My cat chewed through one of the wires for the pre-attached lights on our new christmas tree. Four splicing attempts later (three with solder) I am no closer to getting the lights back on, but unfortunately running out of wire for future attempts on the plug end. The solder seems to be glopping around the wire rather than getting sucked in. Can't tell if I'm using too much solder or not enough; I suspect I was oversold a "heavy duty" soldering gun and that it may be overheating the situation (on my last attempt it looked like the copper wire might have melted a bit, and the insulation is definitely melting) - but the low power setting doesn't seem to get anywhere. Any tips on troubleshooting a splice? I appreciate the video (and the others I've watched on this), I'm just having no luck.

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  8 років тому

      +Vic Random You can apply flux to the wire to help the solder adhere quickly. If your iron is too hot it will definitely cause trouble getting the solder to stick. Touch the iron to the wire to get the wire hot and then quickly touch some solder to it and once it is sucked into the fibers you are set!

    Question, if a child cut a vacuum cleaning cord in two different places could you use this method for that?

    • @AdamDIY
      @AdamDIY  9 років тому

      You can get a replacement cord if it is super mangled. Yes you can fix the cord. If your 2 cuts are close together you can ditch the mid section and have one splice.

    Wait! why is buying a new cord better than just repairing it? Now you have repaired a cable that will now work as good as a new cable so why would you consider to say that buying a new one is better? Anyway, Repairing it is a cheaper, better for the environment (because else you would have thrown it away in a regular bin) and it is DIY (so that means you can be proud of yourself that you've made something broken work again!) ;-D
    Join the DIY side! I'm sure you can do this!

    • @jrgmty7685

      drrobotnikmeanbeanma hot wire is black. notice how the wall outlets and plugs have a wider prong. the wider prong is the neutral, the narrow one is the positive. see the drill cord or other corded tools and they have one wider prong too. the reason is that the on/off switch is always plugged to the positive, wall switches that turn on the lights are wired to the positive, it is a safety code and nothing to do with AC or DC. be careful doing electrical work in your house. you could be touching two 110v black wires thinking they are the same wires but they can be separate lines and give you a nasty dose of 220v and blow your fingers away.

      Do you walk around your front yard holding a roll of Toilet Paper ? You don't know your butt from a hole in the ground. The SWITCH on the tool NEEDS to go to the POSITIVE Wire ! Black wire is the Positive wire and the White wire is the Negative wire .

    Sometimes buying a new cord is better. Rats chewed our microwave cord and that gave me the excuse to buy a new one that's a higher amp rating, thicker insulation (takes longer for the rat to chew through...) and best of all, longer - so I don't need an extension cord to keep the kitchen table clear of appliances.
