This is the earliest version of this song by Yoyoy Villame that I remember as a kid in the early 70's. I can tell from the 3 bass strokes and the rhythm at the intro. My older cousins used to imitate this rendition. A newer version in the late 70's or 80's didn't have the same bass strokes at the intro. Sweet childhood memories.
I remember that one day when, after my teacher talks about the battle of mactan, my classmate presented the "magellan song" and we were dying by laughter. Lol. Anyways thanks for posting this song. Perfect for the 500th anniversary of the battle of mactan. Mabuhay and dont forget history
Estou muito feliz com esta música, vou partilhar isto com os meus amigos portugueses. I speak Cebuano too so I feel this is coming full circle 🤣🤣🤣 It's also interesting that in Portugal they focus on Fernao's circumnavigation of the globe but here we only focus on the win by Lapu Lapu. I think Ph history also needs to remind us that it was a circumnavigation of the globe which is a great feat at the time.
The first version I heard of this song (in the early 70s) was not this one. It was sang by another singer and I believe, the flipside of that single was the song "Florante at Laura". The song starts with "Nang unang panahon ang sabi ni tatay, the Philippines discovered by Magellan..." That one was mostly in Tagalog version of the lyrics so I am not really sure whether Yoyoy Villame actually composed this song.
I prefer this one than the popular one. The popular version sounds like a comedy, while this one sounds like your uncle that often drinks tuba who is into history and is telling you about Magellan through a song

Lapu-Lapu is just a popular myth spread by Moros. Lapu-Lapu was likely more an Animist or Hindu according to historians.

What a horrible song
Magellan is no hero
What makes it horrible? It's actually quite nice.
