Battle of Mactan (Lapu lapu vs Magellan)

- Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan) led Spanish Armada de Molucca, commisioned by the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V in search of wetern route to spice island of Molucca (Maluku), avoiding the Tordesillas treaty as eastern route has been granted to Portugal.
After arriving in Cebu island in visaya region, Magellan was entangled in local rivalry between Rajah Humabon, ruler of the kingdom of Sugbu (Cebu) who already acknowledge Spanish overlordship and Datu si Lapu lapu, chief of Mactan who resist spanish subjugation, as well as Rajah Humabon overlordship.
On 27 April 1521, Magellan and 60 of his fully armed conquistadors landed on Mactan island. Dozen of his men remained in the ships as Magellan did not trust them.
Conquistadors were fully armored and equipped with latest weapons in europe, notably muskets, crossbows, sword, spear and small cannon on their landing boat.
Mactan people revered Datu Lapu lapu, and around 1500 warriors readily fight for Mactan and Lapu Lapu.
Mactn warrior were equipped with wooden shield, sword, scimitar, iron tipped bamboo spear, bow and poisoned arrows.
Lapu lapu organize his foces into three division, one up front an two flanking the conquistadr from both side.
Initially onquistadors set fire to the village, to terrify the mactan people. Instead mactan warrior became furious and charged.
Musket fire did not deter the warriors, as visayans were already familiar with gunpower weapon, notably malay lantaka, javanese cetbang and chinese pao.
as conquistadors were fully armed, mactan warrior concentrate their attack on unprotected leg of the spaniards. Attacking them with arrow, spear & sword.
Magellan and his men were pinned down in 3 direction and overwhelmed. As Magellan were overconfident, and dismissing the help of Rajah Humabon and the rest of his mutinous crew.
Datu Lapu lapu and mactan warrior killed Magellan, while surviving conquistadors flee to their ships. His resistance foiled intial spanish attempt to subugate the islands.

I heard from my teacher that the strategy of the fight in Lapu Lapu's side was to fight early in the morning and in the sand since the sands in the morning are still soaked due to tides and since Magellans side was wearing heavy gears lile armors and gun they would have a hard time moving in the sand
Learned it as well in my elementary days

According to Pigafetta, it was not Lapu-Lapu who slayed Ferdinand Magellan, but many natives-probably battle-hardened, evidenced by their proficiency with spears and very large bolos. This was something that Magellan and his company did not expect.
“Recognizing the captain, so many turned upon him that they knocked his helmet off his head twice, but he always stood firmly like a good knight, together with some others. Thus did we fight for more than one hour, refusing to retire farther.”
“One of them wounded him on the left leg with a large cutlass, which resembles a scimitar, only being larger. That caused the captain to fall face downward, when immediately they rushed upon him with iron and bamboo spears and with their cutlasses, until they killed our mirror, our light, our comfort, and our true guide.”

Remember, magellan was dealing with Pintados. The warrior class.
Or what we call " the painted ones"
Each paint means 1 defeated opponent. More paint means, a victor among many opponents.
Magellan will have a hard time defeating the warrior class.
They fight in groups. And they dont want to under a foreigner rule.
Magellans big mistake was underestimating his enemy.
True, also Ferdinand is not mentioning that he & his men are really outnumbered & overwhelmed. The natives were resilient. Also sharped bamboo spears are quite strong & can strike normal armors like theirs. Look what happened to the Spaniards. Defeated in fear & confusion. Though, thought Ferdinand Magellan did found the circumnavigation partially. However, he's still considered an arrogant fool & madman only to intimidate ruthlessly to achieve his own goal more than the safety of his own men. He's even worst like Columbus. Good thing he's been taken down. Otherwise it will be another problem like what happened in Hispaniola.
If he has gatling gun at that time those hordes will be wipe out.

Since Lapulapu and his men wears clothing, they were much lighter compared to Magellan and his men who were wearing heavy armors. So when the battle began, Lapulapu and his men went near the muddy ground. Unlike the Aztecs (using wooden bats embedded with obsidian), the early PH natives had kampilan swords made of steel. So more of an even match.
And they have a deadly close combat fighting skills that Spaniards called "escrima" (later referrence to fencing). This is the reason why the Spaniards were defeated the first time, even with guns. When they came back, they came back stronger... they brought more armies from Spain and New World, guns, cannons, etc. And when indegious Filipinos fell under Spanish colony, they banned Escrima - meaning the fighting style and swords. Filipinos, however, they found a way to spar fighting and improve skills by doing a nightly ritual dance where they practice with barehands and knives. This was called say-aw. And during the day, they work in the mud, ricefield, beach to practice with sticks and to improve balance and resistance. And because weapons where not allowed, they used they hands, sticks, or knives. And later called it KALI, in reference to a wavy double edge blade sword called Kaliss that can be weilded as a pair, being mimicked by using 2 sticks instead of swords on both hands.
Also contrary to what the video portray Filipino warriors, they did not always fight topless like Tarzan. They fought with contemporary armor of the time and they were even familiar with Gun powder technology.
@@bryanperalta740 exactly, you would think people would do their research... Lapulapu was never a Muslim, he was closer to the Hebrew GOD whom they called ABBA than the Spanish Catholics were, in fact the word Dathu is a Hebrew word meaning law giver, the Philippines were more advanced than the Spanish, they had bigger boats that were armed with cannons themselves and their armor were better, it was actually used in the Game of Thrones series, look like Saiyan armor from Dragonball series as well. One thing they did get right is how Lapulapu was wearing a sacred thread made of pure gold as mentioned in the Bible as to what they wore who were living in that area.

I like how you can easily interpret "the mactans already accostumed with gunpowder" when watching the video as if they achieved some sort of super human ability to dodge shots or bullet proof skin, since they're basically running straight at the guns
Since the common firearm at the time were matchlock rifles (slower to reload and fire compared to the flintlock technology that came later), the native warriors probably timed their attack while the conquistadors were reloading or something...

Lapu-Lapu was said to be around 70 years old at the time, hardly the dashing warrior depicted in popular culture. Magellan Magellan didnt want to capture the malayan islands under sultanates indian rulers froms the west, he wanted to go to spice islands where there are tasty foods, but went to Mactan on the insistence of Rajah Humabon, who wanted to usurp Lapu-Lapu’s power. The truth of the matter was that the Battle of Mactan was an altercation between two rival powers: Humabon in Cebu and Lapu-Lapu in Mactan Island. Cebu, at the time, was a bustling trade port, which served as an important link between the Chinese goods in Tondo and the Muslim wares of Butuan. Cebu essentially tied trade around the archipelago together, and Humabon grew rich off the influx of money and merchants.
Lapu-Lapu was even more powerful. Mactan was situated at a strategic place, which allowed its ruler to control the surrounding waters. Lapu-Lapu, thus, essentially controlled the actual trade in and out of Cebu. This, along with Lapu-Lapu’s fearsome reputation as a pirate, effectively allowed him to assert dominance over Humabon as a superior.
This was the situation Magellan found himself in when he arrived in 1521. Humabon was looking for a way to cut his rival’s power and saw the Spaniards as his ticket. He goaded the Spaniards into attacking Lapu-Lapu, misleading them into thinking that Lapu-Lapu was his vassal and enticing them by converting to Christianity.
The aftermath of the battle also makes it clear who truly was in control. After the Spanish retreat, Humabon offered the survivors a feast-and poisoned them. The Spanish were forced to flee, and only barely made it back to Spain.

@@Chino.12oo yeah but its still counts as an L 😭

So much inaccuracy in this video that it's embarrassing that it discredits what the Cebuano warriors did.
Bitch, they had armor and swords and advance weaponry. Wooden armor that not even bullets can't scratch and a civilized clothing from a maharlikan clothing and royalties from Tribal Kingdoms and Lantakas (Precolonial guns and cannons) this video is really pissing me off on how much it went down.
@@Chino.12oo The Archipelago isn't ruled by Spaniards that easily. They didn't take them down, the Spaniards lost over and over again. The only reason why they won is because they devise a plan of the strategy of divide and conquer. Meaning if they can't fight them head on. Let the other fight themselves and they will wait until whoever wins, they will get the spoils of the war.
Most of the loses isn't because they were powerful. But because the Tribal Kingdoms fought each other until they were weaken.

Lapu lapu: wears no armor, still wins

it was Sir Francis Drake

that sound comes from Heneral Luna movie. "Hanggang sa kamatayan!"
The cannonballs did not hit any of the huts because of the low tide, the galleons were far and that is the reason why they came in boats to fight the natives

Even today, Filipinos still dominate Spaniards. Just look at how many Spaniards Manny Pacquiao defeated.
Alam mo ba pinag-kaiba ng Spaniards at ng latino?
Latinos=/=Spanish
They may speak the language, but they're not Spaniards
Simón Bolívar will kill you if he's still alive today
Yes indeed Spanish and latinos are Similar because they're both part of hispanic culture even us . Just to let you know Latins are belong on the continent of America( South to be specific) and Spaniards are the person who born and raised in spain . What @p4nu way said is kinda wrong because famous opponents of manny were Latinos/latin americans like juan manuel marquez, antonio barrera and why would a South american great leader will kill a filipino like me? Ignorance? I dont think so .
Back in the day Spaniards in the philippines were actually called "Spanish east indies" they came from Nueva españa which is today Mexico. After ferdinand Magellan died the Manila- Acapulco galleon trade started many of native americans, Aztecs, mayans were sent to the philippines to deal business with china.
Spaniards in the philippines are not all of them are from Spain. Some filipinos are did'nt know about that mapapansin mo karamihan ng Filipino sa abroad napagkakamalan latino.
Mga Mexican yon hindi Spaniards bobo

He thought Lapu-Lapu would submit to him just like what Rajah Humabon did in Cebu. He also thought that the Mactan warriors were so weak and can easily be overwhelmed by the Spanish technology. He also underestimated the size and strength of the settlers which in the end, he ended up getting pinned down by Mactan archers and tribal forces in almost all directions.
Lapulapu was actually more powerful than Humabon.
Plot twist: The Bornean Lapu Lapu, a foreign pirate terrorizing the Philippines. Humabon really was pissed in the pirate. The Spanish tried to help. Magellan, who want to impress Humabon underestimated the pirate.
A few years after this battle, the Sultan of Brunei recalled Lapu Lapu.
Oh and he was 70 years old during the battle of Mactan. He is depicted as a Pintados (Visayan warrior). Nope he is a foreigner as well
