- I started this channel because I really, really wanted a Triumph Rocket in my garage. Nearly two years on, am I still so enamoured of this unique motorcycle?

A frank, humorous, and interesting review of a beast. I appreciate your assessment of the real practicalities (or lack thereof) of this motorcycle. I would like to take a spin on it, but not own one. I do have a stronger pull toward the V Rod (the only Harley I'd consider) as a beasty machine I might ride with regularity. BTW, a larger variety of palm trees in the Portuguese landscape than I would have presumed.
Thanks, Timothy. The Rocket is an ideal mate's bike, one that you could ride regularly but not have the responsibility of owning. I would urge you to try one before they're banned outright :) P.S. palm trees are everywhere here, though I think many you see in this video will have been 'imported' from other areas and garden centres :)
My husband has testride it because he wanted to know how the rocket r was, generally same opinion and today he testrided the Bmw r 18, on both he had a nice time but he calls the bmw r 18 "alive" there where the rocket is so smooth and somehow predictable he had more fun on the r18 with boxer engine, which really pulls aside like the older boxer engines. Which they filtered away on bwm boxer engines these days because many people don't like it. Triumph did a great job but for my husband his taste or "lacking fun factor" the r18 will solve it. To mention it would not be his only bike.
I Just sold my 2002 V-Rod and I can tell you that most of what RocketMan said about the Rocket applies to a V-Rod. I found this channel because I'm actually considering something lighter and more nimble, like the new Trident 660.
The V-Rod:
The suspension is horrendous if you don't put on expensive rear shocks.
Cornering needs your whole attention and if you decide to put a nice sounding 2 into 1 exhaust (Like Vance and Hine Competition series), forget fast right hand turns - any bigger lean to the right side instantly scrapes your exhaust.
It does go fast and pulls insane, but having it as a daily driver is a chore - it's difficult to filter in the traffic and trying to maneuver it requires some muscle.
Gas tank capacity is laughable - max range is about 90-100 miles on a full gas tank.
Another important thing to consider - it's a discontinued model. If you want any replacement parts, you'll need to scavenge the internet and facebook marketplace, because the stealerships don't carry most of the parts. Also, it's a harley, so the price for the parts is exorbitant (hence why it's called a stealership).
I own the Rocket 3 GT I've had it for just over 12 months done nearly 9000 KMS, I've owned 5 Harleys including a 2006 VRod plus a Yamaha Roadstar 1600 out of all these bikes the Triumph Rocket 3 GT is superior to all of the other bikes I have ever owned over the years this is the best bike I have ever owned!
@@heyhey1956 I agree! Other than the engine heat and fuel capacity relative to consumption, this bike is perfect. I ride it everyday as my commuter bike and she's FANTASTIC! I don't have any problems maneuvering the bike in corners or Twisties. Very smoothe and gentlemanly engine but has LOADS of power on tap when you ask for it.
Sold my ducati hypermotard and bought a 2021 Rocket 3R. It ticks a lot of boxes. Ridiculous accelleration, effortless cruising, good handling, great looks, hill hold assist, traction control, abs, daytime running lights, good brakes and a zero to 60 that can beat almost any opposition. The engine heat is no different to my Ducati. I love my Rocket❤

Thank you for taking the time to make this very, very accurate review. I own an R3GT and, yes, the suspension is too firm. In fact, everything you mentioned has gone through my head - styling, build quality, details, the necessity of a car engine in a motorcycle. Ultimately, though, I will make it work and probably never sell this particular bike because there has never been something like it before, in my opinion. V-Rod and Diavel don't come close because they miss a lot of what makes the Rocket 3 the most genuine muscle cruiser ever made. Ever time I ride it I feel like a kid with a big-block Mustang able to spin tires nearly any time. Grins for days :)

I've just caught up with this and was drawn to it partly because I recall Rocketman cancelled an order on the basis of the bike potentially being a one trick pony. So I wasn't expecting any great change of opinion here. For me I just wanted to fight the bike's corner a little. There is no perfect bike, even when bloggers buy ther own they then modify it seems. But I find the Rocket 3R comfortable for me, I don't take it off road (!?) but it is very stable. and I love riding and owning, well financing it at least. I also like the challenge of adapting to its characteristics, which because there is no perfect bike, we should be prepared to do to some extent. The bike makes no sense but I love it for that and all sorts of other reasons, including that I am clearly compensating for something!!.... but I urge anyone that can, to experience it for themselves and make UA-cam only part of the process of any decision, not the final nail. Buy the bike you want for you and don't worry about why others reject them. Life is too short to search for perfection.
I agree with all of the above, and if I were wealthy enough, I would definitely have a Rocket in my garage as a testament to petrol power. It’s a mightily impressive bit of kit, but just not for me or the small roads I ride down here😊

I have verbally committed to purchasing a 2021 GT in a few days. I am to trade in a 2016 Indian Roadmaster. Now I am getting cold feet, picturing myself coming off of the novelty of this torque monster and thrust into the hard reality that I traded in a great touring bike for a 2500 cc flying hard-on. Less comfort, more adrenaline. It's like leaving a wife who can cook and sew, for a hot little tart who makes you think of one thing only. I must be bonkers.
Lol. Well, I don't want to put you off, but I agree with you... I famously ordered an R when they were first announced 2 years ago, but when it arrived, I changed my mind and got my deposit back. If I could afford a garage full of bikes, then I would LOVE to have a Rocket, but as an only bike..?
I ride my rocket every day. It's my only transport. I commute to work, go to the shops or just go for a ride for fun or to relax. It's comfortable and I have ridden many hundreds of kms in a day on it. I guess it's up to individual taste.

I just bought a rocket 221, it is such a great bike, I test rode it, not really that serious to buy one, but when I rode it, I had to own one! You are right in terms of the grin, I never had a grin when accelerating on any other bike but this bike was so smooth I couldn’t believe it, so bought one, and PCP make everything doable for everyone!

Done 8000 miles on my gt and use it most days when there's no salt on the road. Totally agree on the suspension. Why triumph set it up from the factory to be harsh is a mystery. A few tweaks and its a totally different bike. I've ridden all day and now I'm not being jarred every bump its one of the most comfortable bikes I've owned! But it is bloody ridiculous but totally addictive ;)

As a large man, 250 lbs, I have no issues with the suspension. It's pretty damned adjustable. 600 mile trip, no problems. :\

Cracked me up with your final wrap up. I have one, love it, it’s stupid, but grin every day I ride her. The heat becomes an asset in about a months time but not as much fun in the summer at slow speeds.
I want to buy one just before the petrol engine is finally banned :)
The rear suspension is adjustable, and was set on the stiffest setting from the factory. Wind it down and it is much better. The seat position is very comfortable, especially with the adjustable pegs. The handlebars don't vibrate like other Triumphs I have had. So I can ride it for hours. With the different riding modes it is an easy every day rider in the States. The weight is not bad for me because I used to own the previous touring Rocket. Therefore I find this new Rocket easy to maneuver to low speeds, and to park. I don't think the power is addictive. I still have my Triumph Sprint. Which doesn't like to cruise, and just wants to go faster. As for price and affordability. I can, so I do. Which wasn't always the case, so I am enjoying myself. At the moment I am frustrated because my Matt Black Trident has not arrived at the dealership, and I put my deposit down last November. I can then compare, and enjoy them both like you. Other than I will have both available instantly 😁😉
Good for you, Ian. I would definitely have a Rocket in my garage if I could afford one. The Trident feels very light and agile after the Rocket; two different machines really. I hope you enjoy yours when it finally arrives. I put a deposit down in November, too, and it was delivered mid February.
what's the bike with the most addictive power for you?
I love my 2016 R3. It has bags of power, But i don't have to use it. I like long rides and to hear the engine purring at low revs at 70mph or abouts, Cough. Is a pleasure. It is however the earlier model and seems to have better seating for touring and better carrying capacity. The weight is down low and caution on slopes and parking. But like the new model it feels lighter when moving. Yet the bikes that i have had over the years and having to drop gears and rev harder in strong winds is no more an issue. It just pulls effortlessly. I will blow off before it slows down. This is why i like the R3. No more screaming engines and being a cruiser type no one expects a challenge. Just for the ride i guess.
I agree and would love to own a Rocket, if I could afford one... and if I could afford to have a couple of other 'ordinary' bikes in the garage, too. Oh well, only 990,000 subscribers to go, lol :)

The Rockets come from the factory with suspension set VERY hard. All you have to do is adjust and she becomes very comfortable. I still love mine and use it as my daily commuter for over a year now. The engine never works hard and the money invested in the brakes and quality was worth it for me.
I have heard that. Strange that Triumph set it so firm in the factory. Make no mistake, if I could afford a Rocket, I would have one :)

I have owned a few forward controlled bikes including the previous Triumph Rocket. I found on any journey longer than an hour my right knee became painful, it’s difficult to remain comfortable because your legs want to splay apart. I’ve got a bonneville now, legs tuck underneath with no discomfort.
The feet-forward position does have its downsides, I agree.
Just wanted to say! For all the totally reasonable but negative comments you make about this bike is the absolute reason why this is (if you really get it) the best bike ever!

I love my Rocket! It greatly exceeded expectations and I'll never get tired of it. it does all I want. As to cornering, it's the rider just getting used to it. Works so well for me and cornering and roundabouts are now a pleasure. Any negatives? Well, only two minor points. Just be aware of that weight when manoeuvring it with the engine off. Not had a problem, but take care. Also, the screen on the GT is tiny. I replaced that with a 46cm screen and it makes a world of difference, especially on long trips. Just get on it and enjoy! I cannot imagine life without my rocket!

I love my 2020 GT. It's a head turner everywhere I go. From die hard Harley guys to young crotch rocket riders. Everyone gathers around it in awe. Sometimes they get next to me just to compare the acceleration to their bike. I think they grin just as big as I do when the back end raises up and I pull away. Try adding 2" Rox risers for a more comfortable riding position. I can ride all day with absolutely no discomfort. 61 years old, 5'9" and 200+ lbs. Got the pegs in the back position. Stay safe on whatever you choose to ride.

I am currently thinking about getting the Triple Black Edition in the GT form, and it would mlbe my daily driver. Not sure it's a good idea tho. Here in Quebec it's impossible to try a motorcycle before buying it so itvs hard to decide if I pull the throttle on it or not. I'm looking for a nice looking (really love the mad max or post apocalyptic look!) and powerfull cruiser that would be fun for some touring but also on back road twisties. I looked at the HD Fat Bob 114 but the tank is too small. Also looked at the Heritage, too expensive for what you get. More goodies on the R3 for the same price. Can't decide...
I really, really wanted a Rocket when they were first announced and even started this channel in an attempt to finance one (hence the name), but now I've ridden it a few times, I'm glad I didn't get one. Yes, they're fabulous machines, yes I would love to have one in my garage to 'look at', but actually riding one? Imho, they're a bit of a one-trick pony: great in a straight line, but really not that easy to live with every day. But then again, I am in Europe where the roads are narrow and twisty...
You can cut back the items shown in the display if you want a more simple view. There's not that much in the menus so it's fairly straightforward to set it up to only display what you find relevant.

Yep, the weight and price put me off owning one. It really does need a reverse gear like the GoldWing or R18.
I could probably just about afford owning one as my only bike, but I'd rather have 2 smaller bikes.
Dragging out a 180 to 210 Kg bike is no big deal, a plus 300 Kg bike is a completely different kettle of fish.
As you say, how often would anyone use such a bike ? TMF calls it a "Garage Queen" that you could have as a third or fourth bike. That about sums it up for me.
All that said, I'll have to get another ride on one, hopefully with the mid set pegs, so I don't do unintentional Rossi leg dangles !
Haha, yes it is quite something. As I say in the video, and as others have commented, it's not a bike many would dare own - for several reasons - but every rider should get the chance to have a go at least once :)

Bland world, in my book.
I rode the old Rocket lll Roadster for a couple of hours in London 10 years ago. I had no problem with the weight and that was a lot heavier, although I didn't flat-food it around a carpark. All carried so low. Great bikes. Agree about the clock on the new model. The Trident's is better.

I can't say I fully agree with your video. I have a 2021 GT and love it. I would agree and not call the GT a touring bike, you fight the wind and the suspension is stiff. As you said you can tour on any bike, but that isn't the best. I look at the bike like I would a muscle car, stiff suspension for better handling and not wallowing around corners, a drag race bike that can handle decently. A person who buys this bike isn't looking for the best gas mileage, they are looking for the brutal 0-60mph or 0-100mph acceleration. It is kind of like buying a Lamborghini and then wondering why you can't haul cement blocks in it very well, not what it was designed to do.
If you do get tired of the acceleration, there are turbo and super charger kits that can take the bike well over 250hp. To be honest though, I just don't see most people getting tired of the acceleration of the stock bike or getting bored with it.
I have not had an issue with the heat, but I have an air cooled V-twin so maybe I am not very sensitive to heat.
I think this bike is great at what it was designed for and and does that function very well. I think your review, while having valid negative comments, didn't also put in the caveat that you were pointing out things the bike was never really meant to be great at.

Question for a fullspec commuter and "tourer" : Rocket 3R or R1250R or R1250RS ?
For me the Rocket is a big toy. A fantastic toy, but a toy nonetheless. There are better alternatives out there, imho, for 'serious riding'.

Suspendion is adjustable,it us possible to set it to softer a bit. Tft looks bad,I would prefer 2 gauges with contained info. Heat from exhaust can be decreased using exhaust wraps between exhaust tubes and the 3 covers.

Worth watching Marcio on ‘What A Day’, you can definitely live with one. I do. Slow roundabouts take a bit effort. But the suspension is fully adjustable and mine is def set up ‘plush’ and travels are decent, so wonder if the preloads were too firm on the ones you tried, or tyre pressures too firm, def suits a bigger rider to muscle it, & I’ve found it steam rolls bumps and ruts, Diavel much firmer, I agree the ride is unlike anything else :) I came off a lighter more nimble Victory Octane and that was more jarring, found the R way more weildy than the GT in twisties

@@RocketMan_Moto yeah took me a good few rides to understand how to shift the bikes CoG, lots of grip on tap as long as you respect the momentum, and from5 end and that rear brake help 8)
You mentioned the weight of the 2021 R3GT in the corners and I find that is is quite easy and light weight. I currently ride a 2014 R3T, maybe that is why I think this GT is a light weight. :-)
I guess everything is relative. I generally feel more comfortable on lighter, smaller bikes, so the Rocket is always a bit of an effort for me :)

FACT: Even at full throttle the ECU will only allow 65% of total power. You have to change settings for appropriate drive styles to increase throttle response.
I did try all the riding modes. Can these be customised?
@@RocketMan_Moto See Dave's Mancave-Tune ECU Tutorial for unlocking your Triumph ECU for more power.
Basically, you will map out all the driving ranges, pick the highest value, then copy and paste it to each range- for example maybe one range only goes from 50-59, you will pick the highest value, then copy and paste to have for whole driving range. I think his article said that the factory ECU is limited to 65% of FULL THROTTLE, but you can go into say sport range, pick the highest number (100%), then copy and past it for the whole driving range. Please see the video.

I like to ride my rocket pretty much every day that I can. It certainly isnt as bad as you make it out to be. Yea, it's firm, yea, you need to watch where you put and park it, but, it's so much fun. Honestly, the Rocket has spoiled any other bike for me. Power for daaays.. Managed to wear down the cobras on the tyres in like two weeks. Constant wheel spin, powerslides and what not. And.. it makes me feel like nothing I could have ever imagined. With this bad boy, you KNOW you're owning the street! And I've sold my 2021 R1 for this!

I bought my 2020 Rocket 3 GT to make a statement to have a rare motorcycle on the road the biggest muscle cruiser on the road 2500cc 153 cubic inches the 2024 Harley CVO have 121ci its a beast of a bike made a lot of friend since i bought the Rocket because everybody want to ask me question about it. Ride safe mate.

You're right, I was... but I'm glad I didn't now. It's a fabulous bike, but it's very expensive, both to purchase and maintain, and really not a reasonable proposition as an only bike :)
What bike would your ride if you are +150 kg and live in a sunny part of the world?
@Rene Van Eynde I think that depends on the kind of riding you like to do and what sunny part of the world you live in.
I would be looking at getting a larger bike, say an adventure or a cruiser. I think the sun just makes all bikes more pleasant to ride :)

The biggest negative for me isn’t the power of the engine, which is RELATIVELY easy to control, it’s the weight if the bike. Personally, I prefer light bikes, but I know many people aren’t put off by size...😊

I purchased a rocket 3 R a few days ago and yes they are heavy but nowhere near 400 kg with fluids, I was concerned about the weight but when I did some research there is a UA-cam clip where a man takes his triumph rocket onto a public weighbridge full of fuel et cetera and it weighed in at 331 kg which is still extremely heavy but 69kg less than you mention ( l appreciate it’s only a guess) for our 🇬🇧 viewers that’s 151LB (10.8ST!!!). Before purchasing I looked into the weights of some of the bikes I have had in the past the heaviest being a Honda CBX pro-link version at just over 300kg (309) but I can honestly say you only really feel it when trying to manoeuvre it about i.e. out of your garage et cetera but once on the move it’s fine - I describe it as a BEAST ! Bikes like this are probably going to be a thing of the past. I enjoyed your review 👍

My local dealer has already sold this years allocation so that has to say something. Not for me though, I sold my Thunderbird last year because it was too heavy .
They are selling these bikes, but as you say, very heavy. My Trident felt very nimble on the ride back home after the Rocket ;)

I got my Rocket GT last Nov and I was stuck with the Rocket GT today for more than 2 hours all because of a bloody $3.50 battery in the key fob!
Hmm, that's the big problem with keyless, I agree. That said, I still prefer its convenience over a 'real' key :)
I got mine about the same time. Didn't ride in January and February, but started it once a week. One week the bike informed me to change the battery. Glad I noticed before becoming stranded. My only complaint would be the fob instead of a key.

I always keep a spare 2032 battery in my wallet. I also keep one in my car. You can probably start it without the battery by using the RFID chip. Check your owners manual, most vehicles have a work around if the battery dies.

Great review. I have the previous generation of Rocket and I would never upgrade to the current as the new rocket no longer retains any cruiser sensibilities and strikes me as a Diavel clone. Also, ironic you weren't thrilled about the Rocket despite your name being the "Rocketman." 😂
The name stems from my dreaming of owning a Rocket 3 when it was first announced. I would still like one, but I've revised my ambitions downwards: it's too expensive for what it offers :)
The Trident looked quite small beside the Rocket.

I had an 04 Rocket 3 and did 30K miles on it touring 2 up and commuting. This one appears smoother and more refined. Cornering, the limit on the 04 was ground clearance not handling. All bikes are toy's, get yourself a Camry you will be most satisfied!
I agree the ground clearance is poor. I like all cars & bikes, including the Camry :)
I used to live next to someone who commuted daily in a rocket 3. I heard the bike coming and going but never saw the rider.
Haha, I suppose it could be used as a daily commuter, but you'd have to be pretty aware of having a good parking space when you arrived at work :)

The bike lurches to one side when you switch it on...god almighty the torque must be enough to quick star the earth's rotation.
Torque is phenomenal, but the bike is very manageable as long as you're not stupid on it :)

These Triumph Rocket 3 bikes weigh approx 295 kg. A HD cruiser weighs 330kg. A HD base tourer weighs 366kg , and 435kg plus for higher spec models. So how is a rocket a beast? Think it is all relative to what you are used to!
To me a Rocket 3 is a beautiful looking, light cruiser ! Beast naaaa !

A Triumph Rocket is very much like a Porsche 911 to me - very powerful, beautiful to look at - but I would not want to own one. Being a bit older, I have partly developed the art "Oh, it's beautiful - but I don't need it."

Excellent review..A bike that had to be built,but largely impractical.There is only so much posing you can do, boasting you have the largest engine production bike with the most torque.There are so many great looking bikes out there that serve a purpose.Rocket 3 is not for me.

I do own one. Always in sportmode and with quickshift. Fuel consumption is VERY low. Highway below 6L/100km. 300km in one sit ( and one refuel ) easy to do. Last summer did 11000km. Monthly payment with insurance is 300€. Totally stupid and illogical ofcourse, noone needs one, but everyone wants it. Makes you laugh like an idiot every time you punch it.

Just watched this again. It is nowhere near 400 kg fuelled. It is 291 kg dry. I have got Rocket 3 lust at the moment and have been watching stacks of videos. A bit over the top for Thailand, maybe. I much prefer the R to the GT. Tacky panniers. Zips! I'd use it if I had one. I don't think it is a curiosity, at all. It's practical. Another reason for having a Rocket is to give two fingers up to the environmental lunatics.
