Tech can be made competently and to last, it's usually either a known finite part that kills them (like batteries, or plastic regressing into oil) or the manufacturer really wanted to save that extra $0.02 per unit.

    A note on warranty periods in Aus, they don't actually mean anything; our consumer protection laws supercede anything the manufacturer says and cover the expected lifetime of the device. Even if Apple only offer 12 months warranty, if a "reasonable person" would expect the product to last longer than this then Apple, by law, still have to replace/refund if it fails. You'll have to call them a couple times and likely lodge a complaint with Fair Trading in your state, but once they realise you aren't just going to give up, you'll get your money back. I've done it a few times, they usually fold around the time you give them a fair trading reference, if not mentioning small claims court.

    • @havtor007
      @havtor007 3 місяці тому +71

      Yep it is important to know that laws are higher on the rankings then what companies say.
      This was so big of a thing in my own country we have a 5year warranty on all things.
      The phone companies refused to even sell phones at that time so it was reduced to 2years.

      In Australia, Apple's warranty is officially 12 months for most products but my experience is that Apple Store staff treat it as 24 months, presumably because that's the bare minimum you'd expect under Australian Consumer Law.

    • @LastDraft_
      @LastDraft_ 3 місяці тому +8

      In Australia/NZ Apple generally covers mobile devices (iPhone, iPad, AirPods) for 2 years and computers (MacBook, iMac, etc.) for 3 years from date of purchase under consumer law cover. While inside this period there's a relatively straightforward submission process via the authorised service providers for basically everything the warranty covered, and sometimes other incidents, like water exposure on iPhones if used within the IP rating. Always worth approaching them for a check, though.
      If you're outside this period then yes, there's a challenge in getting Apple to cover things.

      I expect my computer's to last at least 10 years, because that is how long I use them for before even considering an upgrade.

    Casio has been making that calculator watch since the 80s. It never had a backlight (which was common back then), and Casio doesn't update their watches, so that's why it doesn't have a backlight. casio still makes garbage. It's an extremely cheap watch at high prices, whats worse is that their watches that would go from 30 for their F91W is resin, while paying a lot more for any other their watches will at best get you a metal bracelet and a chrome plated resin watch. Their very nice watches like the A1000 which go for well over 100-150 which should cost half the amount at best.
      Also casio does update their watches, there's a ton of different models with a NEW minimalist design. And they clearly do throw backs that are similar to the original but not the same like the Casio POP which has a significant worse screen with worse viewing angles and a less animated analogue dial.

      Yeah - lots of lithium ion powered devices won't charge their batteries if the battery voltage falls below some threshold. If the battery voltage hasn't fallen too low, sometimes you can rescue them by charging them a bit with a lab supply until they are above their cutoff voltage, then the device can charge them the rest of the way. About 2.8V-3.0V should be fine for most chemistries. If they are above about 2.0V before you start, they can usually be salvaged just fine.

      @@JulyTheNeon Maybe don't buy expensive phones? I have good quality, but budget phones and, since they have plastic backs, removing the back to replace the battery isn't too bad - mostly just plastic snaps. Flagship phones these days won't do that because it isn't "premium feeling" enough.
      And for laptops, if you get the "business class" machines instead of the premium thing and light consumer ones, they're usually quite repairable. Dell even publishes repair instructions on their website. Oh and refurbished off lease machines can be had CHEAP.
      Lots of stuff is still repairable these days - you just have to know where to look and, oddly, often not buy the expensive fancy, shiny stuff. Improving your skills a bit to go with the the times doesn't hurt either.

      It's the price you pay for lower resistance and higher power density. Li-Ion batteries have much higher power per same space/weight, can deliver more power, but are not as long lasting. The reason why the iphone in the video died is phones are never really "off", they always consume power, and once the Li-Ion voltage drops to 0, many chargers will refuse to recharge them because it damages the battery and can make them dangerous.
      Trying to power modern tech with long lasting batteries from the past would mean you would have to either have giant batteries or almost constantly charge them, not to mention that NiMH batteries can't even produce enough current to satisfy peak power draw of modern mobile CPUs.

You can get strap adapters for any strap size. I have a £25 AE1200 which I put a £10 nato strap on and its now more comfortable and durable than any £600 Apple / Galaxy watch.
    Casio batteries can also be replaced easily by unscrewing the bottom plate, popping the battery out and placing a new one in. You can get replacement batteries for watches from decades ago and they will still work.

    You need to get an electrician to check out the power going in your buildings. Both home and the warehouse.
    There's gotta be something weird going on with it. Even with the terrible junk that companies ship these days, you shouldn't be killing this many expensive devices this fast. There's gotta be another factor at play.
    Have them check for noisey power. Inconsistent power. And anything else that might kill electronics.
    Hell, humidity (both super high and super low) can sometimes kill electronics. So can dust.
    I know Australia has a lot of dust storms and really dry air in most places. Maybe some kind of static discharge from those is a factor? It's worth looking into.

Consider, power output can't explain the failings of new tools and parts over on the car channel, nor can the local environment.

    The first gold one, you got it on way too tight. The strap comes with adjustment holes you can easily manage yourself using a pin or paperclip. If you didn't like the strap, they can literally be replaced for another cheap strap.
    That 250$ one is metal version of the CA53w, a 30$ watch from the 80s. It never had a backlight and it really sounds like you impulse bought it rather than doing a quick fit and then getting ripped off by the shop on top of it.
    The GBD200 that you have has bluetooth functions with a MIPS display, hence a shorter 2-3 year battery life (and the battery is also replaceable, it's still uses a watch battery so its very easy to replace). If you wanted one that only had the basic functions and lasted a decade, Casio literally has a ton of Gshocks that can do the job.
    I know it doesn't excuse Casio for upselling a cheap watch by dolling it up and calling it done, but at some point I feel like you're getting angry at your own decisions.

Problem is though, you can’t take the battery out of modern devices for when you aren’t using them.

The only requirement is that you paid Maine sales tax. I think the only exceptions are cars and some tractors. But other than that, had a pair of Airpod Pros that stopped charging, they were out of warranty, got a free replacement from Apple.

      Yeah about those watches:
      The $250 one is outrageous, but that is a fancier version of like $20 watch. For the price it should have a backlight, but tbh, the problem is paying $250 for a metallic version of a cheap watch. Even with a backlight $250 is crazy money.
      The first one isn’t really an example of enshitificaton. Casio have been making those cheap and uncomfortable bands for decades. For $40 it’s kind of passable. You can buy third party alternatives for $10-20 if it really bothers you.
      The G-shock isn’t a problem either. They sell so many G-shocks. If you want one with basic features that has a 10 year battery, they sell loads of option. If you want a solar one that will last longer than 10 years they have those too. If you want one with Bluetooth and radio timekeeping etc, the battery will only last like 3 years. But that’s not a big deal, just buy a new battery. I don’t think you can blame the watch. That’s pretty normal for quartz watches.

    quick comment about that casio with the inverted colors display: that's done by simply rotating the polarizer material 180 degrees. Fun fact, on calculators *and some watches*, you can disassemble the display enough to just slip out the polarizer, give it a quick flip, and put it back in for the same look!
    Unfortunately due to the nature of how LCDs work (using layers of passive and active polarizing to make digits or background appear black while the rest appears clear) is very weirdly finnicky, and backlights on the 'inverted' style LCDs look about half as bright, or less. Sure, they could possibly spec a 3x brightness LED for the inverted style screens, but... it's really not uncommon for those versions of LCDs to lack backlights on small portable things where battery life is critical, because the light has to be SO much brighter.

    • @BrendonGreenNZL
      @BrendonGreenNZL 3 місяці тому +2

      The funny thing about LEDs is we can make them crazy efficient, such that you can get an order of magnitude more light for the exact same power dissipation. Which means the backlight can be even more efficient still, by using the brightest, high efficiency LEDs and running them on 100 microamps instead of the usual 10 milliamps.

While related to their absolute shit tier practice of designing their phones to be a customer self servicing nightmare due to the fact that you have to pry them open with special tools, including several nonstandard screwdriver bits and a heat source for the glue JUST to replace the battery, technically in this case there's likely nothing wrong with the hardware itself.

    That's the Casio CA-53W watch at the beginning, they have made them since the 80s and they have never had a backlight on that model from my knowledge.

    Before: You were yelling at apple to switch to USB-C
    Now: The new ones have USB-C, *but who cares*

      Honestly Dank is weird on the Apple thing. I agree they should use USB-C and it does matter. Also the Linux thing he is going to regret a lot given how bad video editing is on Linux. The only thing good about Linux is gaming and thats it.

      I mean, when the USB-C port on most of 'em is still only USB 2 (In 2024!!!!!!!) it's kinda hard to care if you're shooting video with 'em.

      Apple gimped the USB C transfer speed on their phones unless you use one of their official MFI cables. Good ol Apple, they gotta get their Apple accessory money somehow.

    Snakes like phones because the auto-focus light uses infrared wavelengths, and snakes can sense that with their pits.

      The face id on iphones also uses tons of infrared dots

    I watched this video earlier without even knowing that 3:21 will come to me unexpectedly. My phone was charging, then I unplugged it, left it unattended for a quick moment and it's gone mate. Currently waiting for the certificated repair shop to tell me what did even happen to it (because it was warm for a good few hours despite not working).
